This episode came out for eight years years before 9/11. And this episode predicted the earliest responses. Go back into the information age. There was some new legislation being brought up that we would all call the largest violation of privacy and infringements on American rights. This legislature was university. Shut down with a few the tractor. Still trying to push it through. Fast forward to 2002. The USA patriot act goes into affect. What freedoms we give up is just as if not more terrifying than the threats we face directly. More often than not, we lose sight of what we really are when facing adversity.

I think Ollie completely missed the subtext of this episode. It's about the line between totalitarianism and freedom. How much freedom is worth giving up to insure safety and happiness, and how individual dictators can gain their power, and the rationalization behind them. It has so many corollaries in the real world that can be an inspiration. "I alone can save us."

And sadly the last time that Excelsior model would be filmed. It's only a "refit" because they couldn't unglue the bits they stuck on it in Generations without damaging it. And they only added those bits on in Generations, so they could damage the model without "damaging it" ironically. After this, they made a new Excelsior model which they use a little in DS9 and also in Voyager (Flashback). This one was only 3 feet long and not the insane 7 or even 8 feet that the original excelsior was. All other versions from hereon in are CGI - and they use the original (non refit) look.

All the young'uns need to remember this episode (and show) was written and aired in the 90s. Before 9/11. When I first saw this I thought eh, it's fine, but the whole debate about Federation principles and martial law was a little overdramatic. Played sooo differently in the 2000s. _DS9_ has multiple episodes like that, that I appreciate more partly with my own age but partly with the world proving them more meaningful than I thought.

I liked the villain and the basic story but didn't like the Defiant becoming involved or even a space battle at all. To me it early fizzled out and on retrospect is giving me Voyager flashbacks. (Voyager was notorious for contriving a space battle in an absurd number of episodes. This isn't a spoiler because they were so meaningless and contrived.) This is nowhere near that silly, but imho it was 1) artificial and 2)) this is at least the second time they've done it. I thought the Defiant battle in The Die Is Cast to rescue was gratuitous and senseless. It did have the nice Eddington sabotage but I wish they had stayed sabotaged because it made little sense. The Jem Hadar shouldn't have been attacking their shuttle anyway since the changelings deliberately saved Odo. The Defiant staying sabotaged could have been an interesting b story too. The Romulan/Cardassian attack on the Founders was a flat out declaration of war and you wouldn't want to be hanging around near there in a disabled ship. And that was basically the reason The Sisko was ordered to protect Bajor in the first place, the anticipated blowback.

Glad you're feeling better! 18:07 / 36:21 "Paradise Lost" is a famous epic poem; it's been used as the title of several tv episodes, films, and songs for decades. Maybe you knew that already, but it sounded like maybe you didn't. 19:39 After 3x11-12, none of DS9's two-parters use "Part 1" and "2" in the titles. You seemed to really like the surprise, so I won't tell you when any others will occur :-D It's kind of crazy that DS9 is the only Trek show where family members are recurring characters. Ollie - what sets Ds9 apart from other Star Trek series, besides being based on a space station, is that there are serialized arcs woven throughout the 7 seasons. You will see Cisco's dad again :) And you will an arc later on with Nog that will be one of the epic episodes of a later season. Odo, Warf and Kira will also get continuing character development. I can see already that as a result of the character arcs, you are already becoming emotionally invested in them. And Quark vs Odo as "frenemies" will continue all the way till the end of Season 7!

I love the way this episode challenges the heart of the Federation. Even with all their social and technological advancements, they nearly fall into the same trap as so many nations in history (and a ton of them in the last century and a half): "give the government power so they can protect you, your freedom and rights aren't as important as the safety of the whole . . ." Sisko wears the TNG uniform on Earth because in the DS9 production "bible" from season one where they set up the original lore of the show to build on there were two competing ideas for explaining the in universe reason for different uniforms from TNG 1. The DS9 uniforms were for space stations or "ground crew" type of thing rather than starship. Reason 2 was that being a work in progress, dirty work operation getting the station ready job the uniforms were practical work uniforms like in early TNG when you sometimes saw engineers in scrubs/jumpsuit overalls. (The real life reason was just to differentiate the two shows) but reason 2 explains why Sisko changes to a more formal uniform when he gets to Earth... Those whole reasons get messed up anyway by Star Trek Generations where the cast are wearing both uniforms - they were meant to have whole new ones for the movie but ran out of budget so actually borrowed DS9s wardrobe - when you see Jonathan Frakes or Levar Burton wearing the coloured shoulders/black all over/blue undershirt costumes their actually borrowing g Avery Brooks and Colm Meaneys costumes. Another interesting costume tidbit (if we're into that) and related to borrowing costumes. A lot of the background actors at Starfleet command in this episode, especially in the courtyard outside - the ones walking through the background are wearing TNG season 1 uniforms without the neck colars

The history on the Refit is amazing- John Eaves intended the two additional impulse engines to be shuttlebays, but someone didn't get the memo and Berman liked the stronger look of the orange engines so ...that was that Eaves was plagued with miscommunication from his art to VFX- Like the Son's command ship- it's flying backwards onscreen! You don't need a real bogeyman to be afraid of your closet, you just need to be told there's one and you'll smother and suffocate yourself under your blankets to get away from it. Star Trek really was ahead of the curb, but DS9 hits close to home (deliberate word choice) even years after it first aired.

Homefront/Paradise lost was meant to be the season 4 premiere before the network told them to do a soft relaunch with the Klingon war and bringing Worf on. Instead its the Improbable Cause/Die is Cast of Season 4

Fun fact that the list of captains loyal to Layton are all characters from Catch-22. Great novel, fantastic movie, shit series.

I think the sad thing about this episode is it would go on to reflect a post 9/11 America, everyone was afraid and sadly many innocent people were wrongfully accused of being terrorists

How many Changlings are there in the universe? Not sure we see an ocean of them in the Great Link on their home planet. Trillions or more perhaps.

Funny that Admiral Leyton's appearance in this made Robert Foxworth unavailable to reprise his role in Babylon 5, so they killed off his character off screen.

Just my opinion, this 2-parter is better than Way Of The Warrior and is a spectacular showcase of the danger The Founders will be for the rest of the series

My favorite moment is when Sisko goes full Commanding Officer on poor Nog! Remember when Picard plrd with Wesley Crusher to do the right thing when TNG had their Earth episode? Sisko just went into Drill Sargent mode instead! 😜 I also love that Nog is a regular at Sisko's restaurant! I think Sisko's dad has a lot to teach the young cadet. Speaking of Nog, he was looking pretty sharp in his cadet uniform...and Sisko was in a TNG uniform for this!

Sisko's father is gaslighting the hell out of his son with the arguments he is using against the security measures. Changlings are a fact of life in the Star Trek universe, so there is no point in pretending that they don't exist. The stubbornness and willful naivete of the old man are not admirable traits.

This “freedom vs security” debate is so misunderstood. Starfleet doesn’t need to impose martial law in order to secure the Federation! If Starfleet is tasked with defending Federation space from external threats, and Starfleet Security stops unauthorized people from getting into sensitive spaces where even Starfleet officers without “need to know” access aren’t permitted, then the military doesn’t need to become the domestic police. Starfleet has allowed the Cardassians, the Borg, and the Dominion through their porous borders, their lax security, and their only answer is to punish its citizens with humiliating treaties.
