Kor has a knack for making you alternate between love and hate even in this series :) Unrelated but just saw Wikipedia's note on "EoM": D.C. Fontana said she thought the Romulans were much more interesting than the Klingons but the Klingons were chosen as the regular adversaries of the series because they did not need any special makeup like the pointed ears for the Romulans. Oh how little they knew haha.

Actually, that's part of Kor's charm: since the TOS "Errand of Mercy" totalitarianism, maybe after 100 Earth years of Trek canon, the 130-year-old Kor has settled down a bit and become more reasonable with that much life experience

After the Our Man Bashir episode aired, Star Trek got sued by the James Bond producers. So we don't get to return to this story as much as the DS9 crew originally wanted.

Our Man Bashir is a play on the title of the movie Our Man Flint (1966) and its sequel In Like Flint (1967), a parody of the James Bond 007 franchise, but not as outlandish as the Austin Powers movies that also parody the James Bond and Flint franchises.

Interesting fact 1: *Our Man Bashir* aired six days after the premise of *GoldenEye* Pierce Bronsnan's debut as Bond. Interesting fact 2: Dr Noah is a mixture of Dr No and Noah (Noah Ark), hence his plan to flood the entire world and repopulate his version of the human race, like Hugo Drax. Another Bond villain.

There was supposed to be other episodes with Bashir in his spy program but MGM Studios wasn't too happy sending a letter saying it crossed the line from to infringement. A shame I think they were wrong.

Bashir likes to escape into a fantasy where he gets to be a near super power level hero whose super smart, super athletic, super charismatic... I wonder why he wants to make believe in a world where he can enjoy being all those things? I mean we'd all love to be that but is there something deeper at play?

"Our Man Bashir" is one of the funnest episodes of this whole series!! It's always great to see this cast playing alternate characters, but seeing Avery Brooks as Dr. Noah is next level!!! It's such a blast, and every time Avery gets to ham it up is a FANTASTIC time!!!!

Silly Klingon adventures are always my favorite episodes. And Our Man Bashir is the only episode that contradicts my rule that I don't like episodes about Holodeck malfunctions, transporter accidents, or time travel.

The producers were very strict about not having the holodeck malfunction - and this episode passed the test because they actually got it to do MORE than it was designed for in saving the crew's lives, with some complications of course... No rule against transporter accidents though apparently :P Actually, there are some pretty good ones with transporters and/or time travel IMO!

The music in Our Man Bashir is just the DS9 theme played to a swing beat by a big band. The tune itself is somewhat similar to the Bond melody, with the notes rising and falling in about the same place so they would work well together.

This episode came out the same year I think as Tomorrow Never Dies and MGM were very unhappy with it as they felt it could affect audience viewings of the james bond films.

Sword of Kahless was the first episode of season 4 other than Way of the Warrior written with Worf being part of the cast all other episodes were greenli before Micheal Dorn joining the cast being finalized. That's why Worf in the other episodes was relegated to B plots. This changes going forward.

Sword of Kahless is the Klingon equivalent to Excalibur in Arthurian myth, except that in ST verse, that sword of Kahless is real... I love the Holstian style of David Bell's music for those DS9 Klingon episodes. It is used in some Voyager episodes as well but not necessarily about Klingons. The Urq are the only aliens who managed to invade the Klingons. Klingon Mythology states that the Klingons killed their Gods because they were too much trouble. A fan theory suggests that thos said Gods might have been the Urq themselves that the Klingons finally pushed away. I imagine the Urq as the Klingon equivalent to the Goa'uld in Stargate SG-1, a race invading others, making themselves pass as Gods by their superior technology and then, one planet rebels. Voyager has also its fantasy Holodeck episodes that are quite fine.

This reminds me that STNG's "RIghtful Heir" (S6E23) would have been a good episode to watch as a prerequisite to "Sword of Kahless" It answers the question of who the current Klingon Emperor is, and his role in Klingon politics as compared to Chancellor Gowron. 23:50 "I'll bet that Julian has some other secrets..." You have no idea... and I hope that no one tells you.

I think the Sword Of Kahless might be made from some exotic alloy that makes Klingons go nuts when they touch it. As soon as they stopped holding it, their minds cleared up.

This was the original idea for the episode, that the sword had a toxic property, according to Hans Beimler, one of the writers, but they decided against it. The character's internal flaws are what makes them act out, not an external force.

@@AdamMPick See the one thing I just can't get past is Worf LYING to Kor about a ledge and being willing to order him to plummet to his death. If it was some seemingly honorable thing he could justify it to himself with, maybe, but I just can't think of any other part of Worf's characterization that lines up with "bah he's an old man, I should get him dead for the glory of the empire!"

Our Man Bashir was supposed to be the first of a couple of episodes playing with his Bond-like alter ego... however, they got a little too close to the Bond franchise and were sued to stop any more episodes continuing the infringements... So the DS9 legal department agreed to let it go and never do another one again. :/ Too bad, but at least in our head canon, he saw many more adventures off screen! :)

Cheers for the reaction, Ollie. As regards Bashir having secrets, well maybe ;) Our Man Bashir is good fun. A cynic could say it's just an excuse for the cast to play some different roles and indulge in the James Bond fantasy. But I think that's fine. After all, Little Green Men was a rather comic episode (and I love the reference in that episode to a picture of Gabrielle Bell resembling Sisko) It's great how DS9 can have really moving episodes like The Visitor, and deal with some serious themes (occupation, prejudice, loyalty....)... yet also spares some time for just a fun episode. Anyhow, hope you continue to enjoy your Deep Space Nine journey. It's nice to revisit DS9 with Ollie. Although there's a tinge of sadness, knowing that a few of the cast are no longer with us.

My Klingon story to tell: Their escape through the tunnel system required both agility and strength to leap upon cave rats and skillfully use the terrain to climb and advance. But when the elder Klingon tired, it was hard for Kor to "hardcore parkour" down the corridor toward the door.

CONTINUITY & PRODUCTION ERRORS THE SWORD OF KAHLESS (IMDb Rating: 7.1) 6:08 When Worf says: "The Rio Grande is available" the audio is obviously dubbed in. The close captioning originally said "Mekong" instead of Rio Grande, but this has been corrected in the repackaged DVD set. 10:27 There is blood on Dax's fingers when she tends to Worf's wound, but it disappears when she moves her hand to his back. (not visible in this edit). 17:44 Why is the Sword rotating as it drifts away? It should have materialized in the same position it was transported in. OUR MAN BASHIR (IMDb Rating: 8.0) In the preview for this episode, it shows Bashir shoving a clip into a gun. In the actual episode, he's removing it. 31:37 The music in this scene has been changed. On older DVDs, the close-captioning reveals the words to the original song: "Girl, you really got me now.. You got me so I can't sleep at night. Girl, you really got me now.. You got me so I can't sleep at night." 😂

So the Freddie cougar guy is not the same from the dream episode but is the same race Now the Hur'q are one of the coolest races, we never see what they look like but in the non canon game star Trek online they do become a thing in a whole chapter. The Hur'q are an insect race that verys in appearance (mainly size and head crest shape) but are quite intimidating in appearance. Dispite their appearance they were described as quite friendly until the newly formed dominion found them and tried enslaving them by taking their only food source away (a white fungus) this however made them very aggressive and hungry forcing them to leave their own homeworld and spread across the galaxy like a plague eventually they found the bajoran wormhole and made it to the Klingon homeworld. The Hur'q go on a 2,000 year hibernation and quite literally bury their own fleet. I won't spoil much but I highly recommend getting star Trek online, it's free to play
