The actor who played with Quark & the trade story -- the tall guy -- is academy award winner James Cromwell. You might know him already as the tall farmer from the Babe movies. LGM is very clever. It's great to use Quark/Rom/Nog like this, basically fish out of water alien story. I like when they finally treated the characters relatively seriously but put them in a situation that's funny. It's well written too. It totally makes sense Nog would become totally infatuated with Earth and it's hilarious he found that picture of Bell which is of course The Sisko.

O'Brien is a much better chief engineer than Geordi. Geordi tries to do everything himself, doesn't really help his staff advance their skills or their careers. He beams over to Pakled ships by himself because his ego can't handle letting a team of underlings go in his stead and then supervise their work like a manager should. O'Brien is here delegating tasks to his staff, encouraging them, reassuring them, managing his people well. For O'Brien, it's a team effort, and it doesn't matter who gets credit, he just wants to get the job done and done right.
@kenjisparks
@kenjisparks Ай бұрын
O'Brian is good, but no way is he better than Geordi. By that notion Doctor Crusher should send a nurse on away missions than go herself, or Worf sending someone else from security instead of beaming down himself. The responsibilities of being on a starship is different from that of a space station. Geordi is technically still part of the bridge crew and beams down with the away team, which is usually a combination of Riker, Worf, and Data. Also, Geordi's visor can see things no other engineer can see. So it makes sense he should be the one who goes onto the Pakled ship, for instance. It's not an "ego" thing. That's never been a part of his character.
@rccraig7580
@rccraig7580 Ай бұрын
I completely disagree with your generalization of Gerodi's character. I have seen many episodes in which Geordi has delegated tasks to his staff and other shows where he takes on a crucial task himself. Geordi had a rough start but eventually and successfully helped Reginald Barclay become a member of his staff, he has on occasion mentored Wesley Crusher while was preparing to join the academy. Geordi also welcomed Ensign Sonya Gomez during the Q Who episode also while he was repairing the shields from the borg attack guess who helping him? It was Sonya. No matter if its Scotty, Geordi, O'Brien, B' Elanna, or Tucker Starship engineers have to be able to walk a fine line in managing and delegating as well as performing crucial tasks themselves that showcase why they were promoted to Chief engineer in the first place. I've seen plenty of episodes where O'Brien does something personally and doesn't delegate. Applying your real-world viewpoint to a sci-fi character may not work here. I can't speak for anybody else, but I want to see main characters like Geordi, O'Brien etc... personally involved in life-or-death situations as opposed to them delegating various assignments to subordinates.
@jerodast
@jerodast Ай бұрын
None of the away missions or delegation we see on _Star Trek_ usually makes any sense haha. I'm not gonna hold it against Geordi. But I do love O'Brien as a character slightly more. Geordi didn't often get great writing.

@fakecubed
@fakecubed Ай бұрын
Geordi fans super triggered, LOL. Yeah, Geordi got better near the end of TNG, and having some other recurring engineering characters helped a lot with that. One of them was O'Brien, of course, so O'Brien already had a bunch of character development by the time DS9 started. In their respective roles as chief engineers, O'Brien is unquestionably better, though, simply because he started out great from the start, and Geordi definitely didn't. Geordi certainly had an ego. Mostly it was for television production reasons rather than anything to do with the character, but the reality is we must judge him on what is portrayed on screen, regardless of the backstage reasons. The Pakled incident was particularly egregious, and was fresh on my mind when Ollie talked about O'Brien taking care of his staff. That episode of TNG even included Gomez, so it's not like they couldn't have used her in that episode to show that Geordi was a good leader. It's just ridiculous that there's a starship with a thousand people on it, the crew are worried about being held up by a distress call in case the Captain needs them while traveling by shuttlecraft, and they decide it's better to send a single lone officer to deal with something instead of beaming over an entire engineering team and security escort to make sure everything goes as quickly and as smoothly as possible and get back to what they were supposed to be doing. DS9 had more consistently better writing than TNG, anyway. They had lots of minor characters, particularly underlings, actually participate in active ways in many episodes. Since DS9 was better written most of the time, the characters are better most of the time. That includes O'Brien over Geordi.

CONTINUITY & PRODUCTION PROBLEMS STARSHIP DOWN (IMDb Rating: 7.8) "The Nitpicker's Guide For DS-9 Trekkers" got these two episodes reversed. They list "Little Green Men" as episode 6. 16:03 When Quark uses the tricorder to scan the torpedo, he's got it aimed at himself. 17:02 When Quark pulls out the "diode", the torpedo goes dark. When damage control arrives, it's lit up again. LITTLE GREEN MEN (IMDb Rating: 8.6) 27:56 When Dax buys the holosuite program from Nog, she short-changes him. Instead of the agreed-upon 10 slip of latinium, she only gives him 3 or 4. 33:16 When Rom discovers he can't take the ship out of warp, there is something odd about Quark's inner right ear. 40:12 Odo's left hand suddenly disappears from Quark's shoulder. 41:46 The markings on the needle disappear. If she rotated it while it was in Quark's arm, it's no wonder he screamed. (not in this edit) There are several errors in the military uniforms and insignia.

This episode is the first appearance of Enrique Muniz. Though at the time the character didn’t have a name. This would be fleshed out later. Muniz and the other engineers on the Defiant are a pretty tight group. And yes this is another fine example of how to do NCO’s right. Starship Down did very little for me. It feels perfunctory and very similar to a certain TNG ep (which was itself trite). Worf: I would like to say Worf is out of character here. He's perfectly used to working in engineering and all sorts of other environments. I don't think I *can* say he's out of character because I do not believe it's really the same character. This Worf is always grumpy and whiny and whinging. The Quark/Hanok stuff wasn't bad and it's a hoot to see James Cromwell in yet another role but it certainly wasn't inspired. It felt largely cliche too except the economic argument.

I agree SD wasn't a bad episode but definitely not among top quality Trek or even among the best of this show or season even. TNG Disaster on the other hand is DEFINITELY Top Tier Trek. DS9 Ship Down episode wasn't bad but DEFINITELY not Top Tier Trek. It was cool and watchable though.

The comedy and Goofiness doesn't make the episode weak though. If an episode has a comedic leaning that doesn't make it automatically weak. I LOVE the LGM episode. If comedy is well done I can't dismiss it because they chose to go the comedic route. Comedy doesn't automatically make an episode a bad episode just because it contains comedy or takes a comedic approach.
