My brother has a similar story. Where do Generals keep their armies? In their sleavies. He didn't get it. Didn't know why it was funny. He was walking home at night a decade later, just after breaking up with his girlfriend at the time. He was just about to take another step and before he did, he understood the joke and busted out laughing. Inordinately so, given how elementary it was. There was probably some level of catharsis after such a break-up. As he opened his eyes from laughing, he noticed that the concrete was missing before him and it dropped into the darkness. So sweet to "rewatch" these movies with you (Generations just turned 30 years old the other day!). I'd like to share my opinion on why Picard went back on Veridian just minutes before and not days before (maybe even to save his family). It is only my take on the matter, but I'd assume it is some sort of implicit "canonic" reason (and I really wish they would have addressed it clearly in one line of dialogue, so to avoid what is considered somewhat of a "plot hole"). Picard went back as little as possible as he could to stop the destruction of the star because he's a stoic selfless and he knows too well that to prevent time paradoxes and other temporal shenanigans, going back more could have cause unpredictable and maybe worse consequences and unseeable timeline ramifications. So he went back just that much that could have give him advantage in the situation at hand, knowing that in that specific case nothing worse could have happened anyway in those final minutes. Keep up! I really hope you watch ST Picard Season 3! Too bad you'll have to watch the remaining TNG movie, and possibly Voyager and DS9 to really appreciate that... it will be fun thou. The real problem is that you would have to endure the first horrible two seasons of ST Picard...

Most of which, I cannot talk about, due to the sensitive nature of the careers I have chosen. I look back and I have so many regrets. Have I made a difference? Besides my careers, I also served as a volunteer firefighter and EMT. Have I obtained fame or fortune? NO. But I think I have made a difference. There are people, alive today, that would not have been, had I not been there, doing my job. And that is making a difference. This movie has aged well imho. When I originally saw it opening weekend in theaters I came away disappointed, but I think that was because it had so much hype around it bringing TOS and TNG crews together for the first time it was impossible for it to ever meet such astronomical expectations. Fans had dreamed up their fantasy crossovers for years and nothing was ever going to match those expectations, but over time the film has endeared itself to me far more than any of the other TNG films which has been a pleasant surprise. While it is nowhere near as impactful as 'All Good Things...' and not near as entertaining as 'First Contact', it's commentary on mortality and family was really well done which given my age, holds far more meaning to me now than when I was in my teens. That scene with Picard and his "nexus" family, I used to shrug it off but now find it one of the better character moments for Picard in the whole series.

The producers stated that Guinan’s experience in the Nexus is the reason why she can detect changes in the timeline like in “Yesterday’s Enterprise.” Also, a novel, “I,Q,” about the early life of Q, explains that he created the Nexus when he was a child entity exploring his powers. Basically he twisted a piece of solar flare from a sun around his fingers and charged it with the power of the Q just to see what would happen. Then he got bored, lost it, and it went drifting away.😂

Cassie, re: Spock and Bones: Originally, Leonard Nimoy and DeForrest Kelley were approached for this movie to be on the Enterprise-B with Kirk in the beginning. However, DeForrest Kelley's declining health meant he couldn't and Nimoy was disappointed to be only given a small cameo rather than have a bigger role in the film, so he declined as well. So the writers put Chekov and Scotty in their place. This is why Chekov went down to sickbay despite not being a doctor, it was supposed to be Dr McCoy. This also creates a minor continuity error in regards to "Relics" because Scotty mentioned that he thought Kirk had taken the Enterprise out of mothballs to look for him. All of this could've been changed if the writers had thought of a way to include Spock more.

When Picard tell Troi about HOW his brother and neophew dies, it adds weight to what Soren said to him in 10-Forward. Remember?? He says "They say time is the fire in which we burn." Soren may not have known about Picard's circumstances but being an Elorian, he got a "sixth sense" of knowing exactly what to say to get Picard's attention. Just another odd ability from a species that appear to be empathic, but aren't quite there.

They had to wreck it (and all the other interior sets) because it wasn’t built to stand up to movie screen resolution. That’s why the lighting was so weird in this movie, they were trying to conceal how chinsy the sets actually looked up close. You can see this in the HD remaster of TNG. Drywall screws holding control panels together, rough spackling on walls, loose rattling panels everywhere. The sets were only made to look good on TV.

@@joeeyaura Maybe passing of the torch from Kirk to Picard, but not from TOS to TNG, I know this is just nitpickingly semantics, but passing the torch from TOS to TNG happened in 1991 which was Star Trek's 25th anniversary, The Undiscovered Country released and the same year TNG had Spock and Sarek appearing and TOS had Worf's ancestor, Generations released when TNG was already very much established as the main show, this is why Leonard Nimoy and Deforest Kelley didn't want to appear in the movie, because it was just a minor guest appearance that had no real effect on the plot.

So I have wondered ever since this movie came out about Soren's little Phaser. It LOOKS like a piece of Equipment you might find attached to a Borg drone's arm. I was always fond of the idea that at some point after fleeing the borg, Soren was able to obtain a drone and took that small piece of tech from it and modified it to work for him.
@krashdАй бұрын
Or it could be that it is really El-Aurian tech and that the Borg just later adapted it for their own use seeing as the El-Aurians were a pretty advanced race who gave the Borg a proper fight and who were not assimilated in their entirety when they lost their worlds to a younger version of the Borg. Proving that resistance is not futile.
@patrickcromwell7554Ай бұрын
@@krashd That's a bit of a stretch because quite a few species have fought the Borg and are still alive. Some even thriving. That's still a very small number compared to the entire collective, but still I don't bel;ieve that to be the case. Here's why: the elaurians were dispersed into near extinction. They don't have any kind of colony since the Borg devastated their world. Soren admits that he'd never hurt a fly before the Borg, so why wouod he just be carrying a phaser?? Also to add to that if he had it when they beamed him onto the Enterprise B, why not use it THEN?? Soren wasn't relocated to a habitable planet with the re4st of his species, thiose two ships were pretty much THE ENTIRE Elaurian species left after the Borg. The 70 years between the Enterprise B launch and the start of TNG is referred to by fans as "the lost era" because we don't really know what happened between those two events. Fun fact, the villain in this movie was married to Clara from Back To The Future III. He usually plays villains and psychos, but he's evidently a pretty nice guy. The familiar looking crewman on the Enterprise B is Tim Russ, he's Tuvok on Voyager, he's also been in TNG and DS9, he was in Die Hard 4, he's "we ain't found SHIT!" in Spaceballs, and he was the principal on iCarly. The science officer on the B looks familiar, she's the mom in Terminatorr 2 (the one with the blade hand) and Vasquez from Aliens. The black uniforms they keep wearing in this movie were borrowed from Deep Space Nine, they didn't have the budget to make their own (this movie was shockingly inexpensive). You notice that Riker's sleeves are really short, because he's so tall. That's why they're rolled up so awkwardly. I just noticed Data's Sherlock Holmes pipe on display in his quarters. Nice touch. Worf's medals on his sash are different (he has a seat now, as well!) ... and the Enterprise B is christened with a bottle of Chateau Picard champagne. They made this movie a week after wrapping the show. As for why Picard couldn't go stop the fire? Well, one he didn't know where and when it exactly happened, but also he can only make one trip. He'd be back on Earth and too far away to help the Enterprise. They also couldn't bring phasers from the Nexus because they wouldn't be real. You can only take out what you bring in.

Gulliver's Travels was released in 1996. (Mary and Malcom share a son and daughter, and then Ted has two daughters of a similar age from his previous marriage.)

I don't know how on earth I always missed the wonderful Jenette Goldstein when watching this movie. Sure, it was so small it couldn't even really be called a cameo or bit-part I suppose. Shes in a soon to be released documentary about Aliens (the movie), along with all of the still-living cast and crew leads.

One issue I've always had with this movie is that after all the encounters with the Borg, Federation ship have their shield frequency automatically change and do not just stay on one frequency
@stmcde1701Ай бұрын
I've seen that critique often about the film but I don't buy it -- the Duras sisters have a direct line into everything Geordi sees, that would include tactical/technical displays
@nadzee7101Ай бұрын
@stmcde1701 It is not a matter of what Geordi sees or doesn't see. Before the Brog, the ship's shields were set to a single frequency. I guess each ship used a different frequency depending on how many frequencies were available. I'm guessing that the frequency would be charged periodically. During one of the encounters with the Borg, commander Shelby ordered Data to quickly rotate shield frequency to prevent the Borg tractor beam from lock onto the ship. After that, all Federation star ships are modified with shields that automatically rotate shield frequency.

As to your P.S., Picard has a duty to uphold Starfleet's Temporal Prime Directive. By coming back as close to when he left as possible it minimizes potential impact to the timeline. Going back and saving his family would be a direct violation and he would have time cops wanting him to fill out a bunch of paperwork.

Also, did anyone else notice that Picard and Kirk CANNOT LOSE? Either they stop Soren destroying the sun, or they fail and get to go back into the Nexus and try again. Another detail is that Soren could also choose to leave the Nexus and go back a little earlier to stop Picard and Kirk - two can play at that game!

@@juvandyalso, he and Guinan get into the nexus in the first place by "flying a ship into it". That said, it could be a character error. Soren belives he needs to bring the nexus to him. I grew up watching TNG air every week. I remember when this movie came out, but I wasn't able to see it until years later, when I had been able to watch the series over and over and develop some very strong attachments and opinions. As such, this movie is a very love/hate experience for me. I could write a long essay on what they did well and where they really dropped the ball, but a highlight for me was definitely Picard in the Nexus, celebrating Christmas with his "family". The relief and joy he expresses when he says "these are MY children" tugs at my heartstrings every time. Absolutely powerful performance. Low point is how the crew of the Federation flagship managed to get so badly beaten by L'ursa and B'ehtor. Penetrating shields was a trick the Federation quickly learned to counter after their first encounter with the Borg. They should have been able to get one, maybe two lucky shots off before the Enterprise overpowered them. Eh, I enjoyed your reaction all the same.

After this film, Michael Dorn returned to TV, playing Worf on Deep Space 9. He appears in the other TNG films, so they had to find ways for Worf to rejoin his former crew. So, when he shows up in First Contact, they hadn't seen him in a while.

The Klingon Duras sisters were already seen several times in TNG by this point. Women couldn’t serve in the Klingon council according to the two part episode Redemption. So, they endorsed a young Klingon, of the house of Duras I recall, in order to work behind the scenes.

I was lucky enough to watch this in the theaters back in the day. There are a lot of problems with Generations, but seeing Kirk and Picard on the same screen was mind-blowing. 13:26 "They say time is the fire in which we burn." I dislike this movie, but this is one of my all-time favorite lines in the entire franchise. Not only is it a great literary quote, but it foreshadows the reveal of what happened to Picard's family. Soran used his El-Aurian abilities to sense what was wrong Picard, and uses the quote to try manipulating him. Picard's reaction shows how successful it was. 33:47 In real life, Shatner is an accomplished horseback rider and breeder. Those horses are actually his, and he rented them to the studio. He also taught Patrick Stewart how to ride. That moment around 34:16 when Shatner makes the horse walk sideways is purely him showing off his skills. The cabin has a Klingon bat'leth on the wall, as a reference to what happened in the other movies. The climactic scene on the cliffs of Veridian III were filmed at Valley of Fire State Park, just outside of Las Vegas. I went there during a road trip a few years ago. Good times.
