An Andorian crewmember is the only casualty when a conduit accidentally ruptures on the Excelsior. Radiation causes brain damage that results in a permanent case of clinical depression. While Henglaar looks into medical avenues to help the crewman and Counselor Elbrey does her best to keep him motivated, Captain Knapp also gets involved, lest the depression become too much and he becomes a danger to himself, and others around him.

This episode touched on a very relevant and timely issue. It seems like it's only been since corona virus lockdowns that greater society has become concerned with mental health. Depression is a particularly tricky one for the US because of the "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" philosophy. I've heard variations on that theme most of my life. I think your short production gives a glimpse into what those with major/clinical depression face. In some cases the symptoms can be suppressed with medication or therapy, but without symptoms return. Depression can be a life or death illness. It's also complex in causes, related conditions, and symptoms. I appreciate your taking on this sensitive topic, and your compassionate message.💜🖖

A difficult subject well handled. These episodes are dealing with many 'hidden' frontiers.

This is a good topic as, many of our troops who have traumatic brain injuries suffer the same sort of symptoms as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The thing about depression is, anxiety and other mental illnesses can accompany it, and anxiety in of itself can be so bad as to cause someone to develop auditory and even visual hallucinations. Some mental health issues like, dementia can also cause, anxiety, depression, etc. My brother developed dementia, probably due to his brain already being taxed with autism; and as a result developed an anxiety disorder which caused auditory/command hallucinations.

As one living with a diagnosis of depression (nowhere as severe as the fictional Andorian) I say this: The script-writer got a pair of details quite wrong. The script-writer got most of them right. I thank all involved for an excellent and inspiring story.

@Tumbleweed It isn't a case of ''grow a pair'' much of the time the cause is biochemical as it is a medical, not a psychological condition. If one's body fails to either process Saratonin it is making or Saratonian production is low that can cause clinical depression.

I knew a girl that got put out of the military not for depression but for sympathize with a depressed cadet and identifying with him by admitting that she to was once suicidal but got over it. The military said leaders don't admit weakness.

I've been watching a lot of fan-made Star Trek episodes lately, and I've come to the conclusion that Hidden Frontier assembled an impressive ensemble of actors! And John Whiting has played more scenes as a Tellarite than any actor in any live-action incarnation of Star Trek! Compared to Dr. Henglaar, most other Tellarites seem like two-dimensional caricatures.

I don't like the counselor's comment of the doctor saying he needs the bed for people who are really sick; this devalues mental health issues as being a real form of illness/sickness.
