Good Evening ladies and gents. So, this is my second attempt at the Wrath of Khan attack. The first time around, I was a lot newer and didn't know that many techniques. (I'm still learning of course). But seeing I've gotten a bit better in the last 4 years, I figured Id make another attempt at this scene. (Not to mention after seeing the first version...I kinda see why I got the comments I did lol).
I've made some changes to the first attempt. Such as having the initial phaser beam go straight through the secondary hull. I did that because in the diagram of damage the Enterprise sustained, there were indicators showing they were hit on that side also, not to mention its shown to have damage on that side in The Search of Spock, and seeing we've never seen how that damage appeared, I came up with this method. I know it wouldn't cause scorching on the hull but, eh, I just went with it lol)
I also changed up some of the original angles and added more shots, such as her just drifting in space. (I also have her drifting in space). Along with changing the "static view screen glitch". So, lets see if I've improved. Of course I'm not looking for "perfect", just better than version one. As always, enjoy :)

I can appreciate what you were doing here, but this doesn't make sense. If the phaser beam penetrated both ends of the outer and inner hull, and went through the secondary hull at that location, then the warp core and engine room would have been destroyed, and Scotty, along with everyone else in engineering would be dead. They would have died from the decompression alone if Reliant's phaser beam didn't kill them. Further, I'm not sure how the integrity of the intermix chamber could hold against a phaser beam like that. It's entirely possible that the whole ship would have been obliterated by a massive anti-mater explosion, that likely would have destroyed the Reliant as well. If not, at least severely damaged her. But the chances of a phaser beam penetrating both sides of the Enterprise's hull on the first shot is negligible. Given the allotted time from the original theatrical clip, I think the more likely explanation for the phaser burns on the Enterprise's starboard side secondary hull is that Reliant ported around the Enterprise's aft to emerge on her starboard side, and fired a second shot. We don't see this happen in the film because at this point, we're watching fires, sparks and the running of panicked cadets on the Enterprise's interior. But we see shakes and hear additional explosions. This is likely sounds of the hull being impacted because the Reliant was hitting the Enterprise again, but from the opposite side. This would also explain the two hits the Enterprise primary hull took that we see on the damage control panel Kirk and Spock were examining. But by this time Spock and Kirk were assessing the damage, the Reliant had already completed it's loop past the Enterprise's bow, and was maneuvering to line up it's rear torpedo tubes. All together, the Reliant struck the Enterprise with 4 separate phaser shots, and one torpedo before Khan called the Enterprise to surrender. Despite the fact that in the theatrical film, we only see one phaser shot, and the one torpedo hit.

I've seen the attack on the Enterprise probably a hundred times or more and this is the first time (be it the actual film or a fan made video) that the opening broadside caused me to cringe--not because it was poorly done--but because this really sells how badly this attack damaged the Enterprise. I love the fact that she starts drifting and you can see things flickering because of the power issues. And that shot following the torpedo was great. Well done.

Absolutely masterful! The Reliant's phasers going through the hull is actually keeping with a detail that few know in that The Miranda class had phasers (the ones mounted on the "roll bar") that were powered directly off the warp grid. They didn't just draw warp power to use...they were run directly by them. That's why he lost the phasers when he lost warp drive. An unshielded ship would have had a hole cooked straight through her with that kind of power. If Khan would have aimed a little higher, he'd have sawed the saucer section right off with those phasers.

I thought the "rollbar" phasers on a Miranda were PULSE phasers--more powerful than the dual phasers found on the saucer section. I also think the Miranda class were more "TACTICAL" Federation ships than the Constitution ships so they would defend the REGULA space station if attacked. Oh well...

The Enterprise refit phasers in the Motion Picture were generated by the warp drive, too
@meme9492
@meme9492 3 ай бұрын
@@kingsman8475 Yes, but in the Enterprise, the phasers were fired from the phaser banks which were charged by the warp drive. In the Miranda Class, IIRC, the phasers were powered directly by the warp core, not through phaser banks. It would explain why they were powerful enough to burn right through the hull and why Reliant lost them completely when they lost the warp drive.
@kingsman8475
@kingsman8475 3 ай бұрын
@meme9492 The Enterprise had lost their warp drive, too, and could only muster ' a few shots' from their batteries. I'm not sure about the deleniation between the banks and turrets. The dual phaser banks on a constitution starship are actually turrets if you look close enough.

I like the added ship action cinematography. You've added more excitement and chaos to an already chaotic scene just with your ship movements interspersed with the original character scenes throughout this attack sequence. The additional work brings the space terror aspect of this movie to a new level. The ships are just as much characters as the actors and you have a good start at giving these ships their due. I remember seeing this in the theater when it first came out.... then again in the theater with a Q/A by Shatner himself just a few years ago.

This was a masterful recreation of one of the greatest science fiction action scenes in Science Fiction history. What made Star Trek 2 Wrath of Khan so good? This tense moment by moment drama to an epic space battle has really not been equalled in Sci Fi history. You, sir, were able to maintain that emotion and drama with modern computer programming, but considering how good the effects were in 1982 in this film, it is really hard to beat. Awesome job.

And now we know darn good and well why the emergency section door in the engine room came down, and why Scotty's nephew Peter Preston briefly lost hearing. That section of the engine room probably lost air pressure completely, by that I mean the part that was cut open buy the phaser blast from reliant.
@MMuraseofSandvich
@MMuraseofSandvich 17 күн бұрын
The original's shots were a product of their time, of course. Back then the best computer graphics could muster was compositing work, much of the effects had to be done with practical models, and doing everything that would likely happen if the engineering section was hit without shields up would likely have made the accountants at Paramount very unhappy. It really speaks to both how far modern 3D animation has come and to the talent of QD that we're seeing things like secondary explosions in engineering (matching the bangs and booms heard on the bridge), the cloud of gas, dust, and debris around the _Enterprise_ that is drifting because her propulsion systems are knocked out. Then there's the counterattack animation perfectly matching Joachim's lines, "They've damaged the photon [torpedo] controls and the warp drive!" You shouldn't see anything dramatic happen with a severed control circuit, but the warp drive getting knocked out? That's a very cool effect.

I don't know the technical term for the way the skin of the ship's hulls look, but at times they still appear a little primitive--very old school cgi lacking detail. Nice work. I like the new angles you chose when the Enterprise got hit. My one suggestion would be for you to slow down the movements of both ships. They jet around too quickly. Remember that the director wanted the battle to be like two Submarines fighting underwater (or two lumbering wooden battleships facing off). And submarines do not move very quickly. If you could slow down the movement by 50%... I think it would be great. But otherwise I think you did a good job. Keep it up.

For some context on realistic maneuvering: The 1701-A ostensibly is 950 feet long and masses 190K tons... The real CVN-65 Enterprise is 1100 feet long and displaces 95K tons. Its upcoming Ford-class replacement will displace 115K tons. Obviously something something inertial dampers, but yeah, it's the size of an aircraft carrier and twice the mass.

It's a fun reworking of the scene with some dynamic movement that the 1982 models simply couldn't deliver, but as "realistic" as the floaty movements of the ships may be, it comes at the cost of the sense of mass. Yes, there wouldn't be any real weight without the effects of gravity, but the trick with visual storytelling is to make it feel right to our subconscious minds whether it actually is right or not. Space in Star Trek is equivalent to the open sea thanks in large part to the influence of the Horatio Hornblower novels on both Gene Roddenberry and Nicholas Meyer.

The Enterprise outgassing and adrift after getting gut-shot was something I have been wanting to see for a while now. Even lights flickering to indicate disrupted power throughout the ship! Nicely done. They would probably stay off near the most heavily damaged sections. Why the ship listed to port after clearly trying to turn to starboard after realizing Reliant was hostile is something that has nagged me for a while. (I always thought a gout of unbalanced thrust from the impulse engines might have done it) Your take on it is pretty good. Well done.

I like the added view of the Reliant phasers blasting right through the secondary hull out the other side, amazing!

Great work! I really like the floating debris around the hull of the Enterprise. The phaser cutting through main engineering looks fantastic!

Great phaser and torpedo work! The flying debris is awesome. I don't think white is a good color for the engineers' uniforms; what a laundry nightmare. And why does Kirk have to suggest using auxiliary power to the chief engineer, and then Scotty acts like, oh, that's an idea I hadn't thought of? Though completely different, The Wrath of Khan and The Wizard of Oz are my favorite films of all time. I'm sure Montalban has a nearly everything to do with its success. Makes me want a Chrysler Cordoba with Corinthian leather now.

Well done! It was good to see details added like the damage debris cloud floating around Enterprise. She was hit hard by that first attack. It would have been nice to see a bit of debris floating around Reliant as she retreated, by hey, I love to nit-pick! Beautiful work!

Just Excellent !!! I've watched all the Versions of Directors Cut and the 4K verision.A big Trek Fan since I watched it First Air on NBC(a Desilu Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball, Yes, after I Love Lucy production, Ball was a TV Visionary, Thanks Lucy, for all your hard work on Star Trek, and fighting Desi, thinking it would never gain fans) in the 70's ( I'm over 65 years young ) and this is great. The sound effects are improved and dialog/Soundtrack blending is spot on. Since I have a back round in Audio and Video mixing is just brilliant. It Increases the original scores impact ( thanks James Horner ) and gives the scene much more momentum, than the original final studio cut. The CGI space shots are very well done and the debris fields are a nice touch, not shown much in other space epics. Two thunbs up from a UC Berkeley Film Art /Media Major... Its going on my phone right now !

At 8:00 you fix the most flawed scene in the movie. When I first saw this movie at a preview packed with rabid fans, the audience went wild cheering when they thought it was The Enterprise rising triumphantly over The Reliant! The cheers then rapidly and awkwardly faded when the audience realized which ship was which. In your version of this scene, The Enterprise is obviously the Enterprise when the scene begins.

This is honestly one of my favorite Star Trek movies! If I could make a recommendation for a future revision: Maybe have a short particle trail from the hull breaches showing atmosphere escaping, and another trailing from Reliant's impulse drive after Enterprise gets her shots off. What you've done here looks really good! It's just I think the added particles would add a touch more detail to the damaged areas of both ships.

I love all your notes and of course the added CGI is amazing. I had noticed the screen glitch you added before reading the desc. and was happy to see you noted it. I re-watch this movie every so often… and a Search for Spock and Voyage Home. True masterpieces imo. I just recently finished re-watching them as a matter of fact, so this is great timing for me. The films themselves are dated of course…, but when fans with skills like yours do stuff like this… well, the limits are as endless as space itself. PS - Any plans to do the final battle (ie Khan v Kirk round 2)… or scenes from the other films?

That looks quite good. Keep up the work. I really like the hull fragments around the Enterprise. However there's still something to be done considering light and surfaces. Also, some phasers could be more 'intense'. Especially their impact seems to lack a bit of punch. But again: Keep up the good work!
