When Spock died at the end of Wrath of Kahn a few people were emotional in the theater. But when the Enterprise blew up I could hear people sobbing all over the theater. I was too shocked to cry. It was the most traumatic experience I'd ever had in a movie theater . . . Until my brother and his buddy dragged me with them to Total Recall (throwing up on the theater floor because of a disgusting Siamese twin puppet- eew). And then they start off Star Trek IV by replaying the Enterprise blowing up . . .
@monsterhunter667 жыл бұрын
liljenborg you think Total Recall was intense? You should watch Felidae and Turok: Son of Stone.

I think people don't always realize that the ships are characters as well. In fact the enterprise is meant to be symbolic of earth itself, with the crew representing a future of humanity in which all nations and cultures are united for the cause of progress. Thus the destruction of a starship can be more depressing than any character, especially when considering the star ship in question is the most inspiring ship (maybe even symbol) in all of cinema. Maybe its because I am a Trekkie beyond anything else but I can't think of a more inspiring image than the Enterprise, save for Earth herself that is.

I know it's boring NC, but yes, the hand touching is a part of Vulcan ritual. Vulcan finger-touching was a ritualistic form of affection among Vulcans involving the index and middle fingers. It was used throughout their culture, including in public, at wedding ceremonies, and during the pon farr. Contact ranged from a simple two-fingertip touch to tracing around another's hand. If a Vulcan mated with a member of another species, the non-Vulcan would adopt the practice. The Romulans also had knowledge of the ritual. (TOS: "Journey to Babel", TOS: "The Enterprise Incident", Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, ENT: "Home") Regarding the origins of the Vulcan gesture involving touching of two fingers with two fingers, Leonard Nimoy explained in his book I Am Spock that the gesture was not meant to be the Vulcan equivalent of a human kiss, but rather the Vulcan equivalent of holding hands in public:

Pretending Star Trek 3 is a bad film to maintain the, "Only the Even numbered Trek Movies are good," myth is ridiculous. 3 is a good movie that merely gets a bad rep for having to follow Wrath of Khan. It's better than 6 and way, WAY better than the mess that is 10.

@ANT 123 Journey, not the destination. Search For Spock is an enjoyable watch, even if it's not exactly necessary. That same argument could be made for Empire Strikes Back. The movie's main flaw is in the setup of the action. They never explain WHY they need to get Spock's body. Sarek seems mostly interested in the katra, which is in McCoy. David and Savvik seem genuinely surprised Spock's coffin torpedo is intact. Why couldn't Sarek make a request for his son's body be returned and Kirk take McCoy to Vulcan by conventional means? Vulcan mental powers aren't a secret and they'd be in the best position to help McCoy and reduce his status as a security risk. Sarek is an extremely important figure on Vulcan and in the Federation. He'd be able to get these things done. No one knew about the Klingons or the destruction of the Grissom until the Enterprise arrived.

IMO, II was the best but III is the most underrated. It had major plot points used as canon, especially the blowing up of the Enterprise. Lloyd was a lot of fun and so was seeing McCoy of two minds.
