Marina Sirtis gives us insights into the Star Trek TNG/DS9 wardrobe, together with costume designer Robert Blackman.
This was a special DVD purchase made a long time ago, I guess around 2006 or so. I didn´t find the full record on KZbin, so I decided to upload it.

I once had the pleasure of meeting Marina in Planet Hollywood in London. She was on the table next to ours and my wife kept egging me on to say hello to her as it seemed no one recognised her apart from us. She was so lovely and we chatted briefly during which she signed my menu which I still have today. I have to add in person she was even more gorgeous than she looks on screen!

I've been watching TOS and TNG lately and it suddenly dawned on me that currently we are farther from the debut of TNG than TNG's debut was to TOS debut. I think TNG holds up really well today and that's why it doesn't seem as far back as it really is. Wow, 33 years.

"Enormous learning curve... like marathon running uphill... no history in the future". Robert Blackman says he was "stunned by how much we had created every week". I was always stunned as a viewer watching those first TV airings. My mother is an excellent seamstress who made a Captain's uniform for me in 2001 when I was twenty-one and I looked great. I wore it into work where I was designing socks onto floppy disks that I fed into huge, round knitting machines in our downstairs factory.

This is great. Seeing them talk about the costume design is a treat. It's the little details like this that really brought the show to life. Some of the costumes honestly were terrible, but the good ones were great! I can rewatch TNG over and over again just to appreciate the little artistic details put in. One of these days maybe I'll compile all the costumes used in TNG. (And if I'm feeling really motivated, all the series, wouldn't that be a project.) I'd probably be the only one interested, but I think it would be fun.

Those future uniforms looked great, I thought, a nice compromise between formal and casual, and they looked comfortable and functional. -- I'm laughing about the women's-added bras and the men's padded shorts. -- And they always seemed to put Troi in a girly-girl or revealing outfit, while Dr. Crusher got a business-like uniform. Then Guinan got to look casual all the time, with those funky hats to top it off.

Guinan wasn't actually a star fleet officer, she was a bartender, so she wasn't required to wear a uniform. I always thought Troi should have been wearing a uniform, not that skin tight catsuit she always wore.

For all the speculation about the uniform colors, there is a video or even tv commercial circulating about how "unlucky" it is/was to be a cast member of the original Star Trek if you wore the red tunic. Most of the folks killed throughout the series wore those red tunics. As someone who served in the Armed Forces, I guess it is part of the democratization of Star Fleet that everyone, officer and enlisted, wore the same work uniform?

Its so funny that I can totally see my aunt's rather brash style(she's 62) in Majel Barrett. Yeah TNG might have been 25-30 years ago, but man does it stay relevant IMO. My aunt has always dyed her hair red, tried her best to look like a tanned version of Lucelle Ball. Yet she could totally rock some of those crazy ass dresses/costumes of Lwaxana Troi and sincerely look like they were made for her.

I enjoyed this for a few reasons but the main one is I got to be in that dressing room, and met some really nice wardrobe ladies and if anyone out there knows Ducky tell her the one who twelles ( spelled wrong sorry) her thumbs remembers her with warm regards ,as all the ladies who helped me... I was in the dressing room across from the spot were the uniforms were. I even looked through them and found some I knew the names of the extra who wore them... See Thanks to Liza Gibbons I had the chance to do a walk on well really a stand on on DS9 in 1996. So I got to have the honor of seeing so much and meeting a few of the actors. like Mr Shimmerman who I omoxed him , OHH Yes I did...Talked to Nana Visitor, and some very nice crewmen and extras.. Some day I may get to meet Ms Sirtis,,, , thanks to a friend who did on line trek movies I have met many I never thought I would have. If you ever get to Hollywood do get there after the Santa Ana winds have got through as they will blow all the smog away and you will get a nice view of the Hollywood sign...or so I was told by everyone I met.. ok I have been a Trek fan since the first series it was something my dad and I could watch together. he would always tell me remember this or that some day we will have it... So to all series of Trek THANK YOU for the entertainment, and for showing there would be a more involved place for females.. and all the lovely hours I spent with a group of people who enjoyed it as much as me and all the friends I got to know over my (cough Cough ) Years of being a fan... You brought more then a show and characters in to my live you brought a whole universe to think about. and in a few hours NASA astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir will make “HERstory,” as NASA is calling it, with the first all-female spacewalk.. God bless and be safe my prayers go out to you.

Fascinating. But the color was gold by the book.

Kratax Kirk did have that other shirt that was sort of green the one with the v-neck.

Yes, they did change the colours, in the films before TNG ever aired. Are you just finding out about this now? It happened like 40 years ago.

@@Ottophil LOL out loud. Man has sex with 13 year old. Woopsie says "it's not rape rape". Woopsie's daughter is pregnant. Woopsie urges her daughter to kill the baby. When Woopsie's mom convinces Woopsie's daughter not to kill the baby, Woopsie gets mad at her mom. When interviewing Don Jr (may have been Eric) Woopsie interrupted him when he said she had been calling for Trump's impeachment since a day after he won. Woopsie called him out, claiming that never happened. The day after Trump was elected, Woopsie said "impeach his ass..." She's not only ignorant, but she's evil.

Why would they make the officers and commanders colors red and the security and engineering colors gold, when it was the exact opposite in the original series? Makes no sense.

I know your comment is a couple weeks old but thought I'd answer. About when you posted your question/comment, it was the 30 year anniversary of the debut of ST: TNG, so people were most likely feeling nostalgic and watching ST stuff on youtube and probably popped up into some feeds. I've been slowly rewatching some of TNG and Voyager on Netflix these last few months, while watching interviews from conventions and behind the scene stuff for TNG here on youtube once in a while as well and this popped into "you might be interested in" feed because of that.
