Very cool! I love how the Reliant's torpedo actually comes reasonably close to the Enterprise here, rather than missing by 3 entire ship lengths as in the original film.

The miss in the film makes sense, the torpedoes sensors shouldn't have been able to detect anything so it just goes straight.

@@fr3nchy226 He only missed because Enterprise hit a bit of turbulence right as he takes the shot. Though the scene right after where Khan gives the order to fire the torpedo looks as though Reliant actually got hit because he's holding onto the ops console for dear life.

It's kind of amazing when you think about how a GAME engine has become so advanced that it can recreate FILM effects from the 80s and it's nearly impossible to tell the difference.

This is how you update something while still respecting the original. It's little things like the way the ships move compared to the original. The updated, but still faithful recreation of the phasers and warp effects. The lighting of the nebula is spot on too. This 1min video does more for Star Trek than the entire updated look of the TOS series as a whole.

Thanks! Unreal Engine still clearly has its limits as opposed to full on renders. But yes todays modern game engines have come a long way. But back to what you said, art direction, lighting and shot composition is very important to convey the original's look and feel. Under less capable hands those same practical miniatures can look like garbage if it wasn't executed by ILM's artistic eyes. Case in point, Star Trek 5

very cool. The only critique I have for what I see here is that maybe the ships would look a bit more realistic if they were moving a bit slower. Part of the drama in the original is that there are these two lumbering hulks who cannot see each other, so the possibility of collision is very real. In the overhead shot of Reliant near the beginning in the actual scene, it looks like it slows down halfway through the shot. A sense of weight and mass would go a long way.
@Hibernicus1968
@Hibernicus1968 Жыл бұрын
I like the faster combat. In the original series, the _Enterprise_ frequently fought other ships _while at warp_ (e.g. Journey to Babel), and usually at longer ranges. Frequently (again, see Journey to Babel) the enemy ship is never seen, or is seen only as a moving light. This was actually for budgetary reasons -- they couldn't afford to make a whole new enemy ship model -- but it ended up being more realistic. The vastness of space, it might be visually exciting on the movie screen, but it's simply not believable that ships possessing long-ranged weapons, and targeting computers and sensors, both centuries beyond what we have to day, would fight battles at such close distances they would be prone to physically colliding with each other. It makes sense that ships would fight each other from far outside _visual_ range.

When they said that the recent (still going) Superman TV series was going to use Unreal engine for the visual effects I was skeptical, but recently I realized that it probably saves them untold hours and money. Pixar (which is also a software company) is about to lose their primary source of income. Pixar's powerful new version of RenderMan is about to be obsolete and nobody will buy it anymore if Unreal can do the same job in a fraction of the time for less money.

Would recommend blender or other 3d app of preference for modeling and uving. No getting around that. Unreal for material making and animating. Nice to see results in realtime with nanite and lumen plus other post effects. Unreal does have a render mode that doesnt require a beefy gpu to play what you want animate with minimum 24fps with motion blur. Im still on the fence on particles and volumetrics.

This is awesome, but I recommend you look at your motion blur settings. The motion blur setting feels too high. Standard movie motion blur is a shutter speed of half the frame rate. So if the frame rate is 24fps, the shutter would be 1/48th. This is sometimes in numerical values, so 0.5. Other times it's in shutter angle which would be 180.
@Omniscape
@Omniscape Жыл бұрын
Will look into tightening those up. At the moment my motion blur options are limited in the Unreal Engine when stuck using temporal anti aliasing. Using multi sample anti aliasing (typical in traditional rendering) in the engine it breaks the smoke simulations making them end early between camera cuts.
