I loved that scene. I don't even like Voyager. I haven't watched a lot of it but I have seen some episodes. It's just not for me. But that scene was so good it doesn't matter. The acting was great, no surprise given who had lines, but technically it was so good. It was edited and scored to add the perfect amount of tension. It didn't drag it out, it didn't skip ahead, it just flowed. It was slow and methodical and every second was incredibly tense. The twist with the second test, perfect. They even played the Voyager theme to signal that it was really Tuvok. And then they pulled the rug. Just pulled it right out. The cinematography was on point too. The angles, the slow zooms, the one and two-shot inserts/pickups... Just perfectly executed. I'm being completely serious here. It was just an excellent scene. Absolutely top notch filmmaking, no caveats. I was very impressed with the cast and crew and I wish we could get that kind of quality all the time. It's top tier Star Trek and I will die on this hill. I can't praise it enough

The editing gave the perfect amount of tension and the score really drove it home. Like when they played the Voyager score. We all understand that according to the commonly understood language of film that means he's really Tuvok. That's a common part of our collective cultural vocabulary. So when the rug was pulled it was that much more impactful. The timing, the one and two-shots of our characters, the facials, the body language... All superb. This is quality television and I wish it were all this great. Just an exceptional scene top to bottom

The Borg telepathy doesn't work on people who haven't been in the hive mind, and if it did - you'd expect the first person Jack would link with would be 7. So while plausible, I think the theory unlikely. This being said, with all of our new captain's anger about Picard's ex-Borg status, that could have been foreshadowing. My guess is that Beverly was experimented on by the changelings while pregnant with Jack. Rather than needing Jack's body to finalise cloning Picard, my theory is they wanted his body to finalise cloning Jack, with Jack's biology being the final piece in the puzzle to link humanity by leveraging the linked systems in all the federation ships and outposts (that Jordi mentioned opposing and being the way they were tracked). Again, this could be another reference to the Battlestar Galactica story line of networked starships being their downfall.

Hear me out here. Jack is telepathic? But he's Picard and Crusher's son for sure. Michael Burnam shares Sarek's katra, and that makes her telepathic in a sense. Picard must also share Sarek's katra, because of the mind meld to control Sarek's Bendii syndrome. Sarek gave Picard Bendii syndrome. Picard passed it on to Jack, along with some telepathic abilities. Iromodic syndrome coupled with Bendii syndrome explains Jack's hallucinations, and his abilities. The only piece of the puzzle I don't get is why the Changelings care or how this helps them. Or how Jack could be partially Changeling (linking is how I assume is how Vadic was going to "show" him rather than "tell" him).
@TheRealWalkingDude Жыл бұрын
I don’t know if this correct, but yeah, I hadn’t even thought of this one. My current theory is that Vadic's "boss" (who is NOT a changeling because he talks about changelings as if he wasn't one of them) is a backup of Locutus, and they want Picard's body so he has something to inhabit. But they need Jack for some reasons as well...and that Jack's ability to link with other humans is going to be used to try to assimilate a bunch of Starfleet (and maybe the Federation) all at once.

Weird Talking Head Thing during that conversation unmistakably Others Vadic ("you and your kind"), and that comment ought to have incited speculation. In an episode already redolent with various notions of cultural righteousness, the phrasing of that remark injects another layer of potential intolerance. It was weird Jessie still found "being part of the Great Link" a leading theory after hearing that dialog. Personally, your second theory fits what I speculated during the episode. Geordi making me cry in this. Plot-wise, I've been feeling that, since they revealed what the "Red Lady" was a few episodes back, we are getting some time shenanigans as part of the climax. Like, the Garrett thing is either foreshadowing time travel/parallel dimension stuff in general, or specifically calling up Garrett somehow. My money is on them somehow having Tasha Yar make one last cameo in a way that reveals she risked her life to save all the others. That would tie into the Wrath of Khan idea that "the needs of the many outweighs the needs of the few, or the one."

the fact that Sidney's eyes glowed as well, suggests to me that there could potentially be nanoprobes in her too. along with the extra focus on touching hands. i wonder if he unknowingly transferred something across to her in that moment. it doesnt explain the psychic connection though of course, as that occurred before that moment. but possibly the whole thing of being two way or something like that.
@Stress-Free-K Жыл бұрын
Glowing eyes, as we may recall with Airiam, are clear signs that someone has been compromised, in Trek. I also thought the touch was when the nanoprobes were transferred. Even Sidney seemed to have found the touch to have been a bit extra. I think humans also have psychic connections, especially when sending off pheromones or other intense emotions. Which is why both of them thinking about touching was pretty normal given the vibes they were both sending off.

Chekov's Janeway is the best ever! 😂😂😂😂 If we don't get some Janeway by the end I'm gonna be sulking in the Jefferies tube. And is it just me or did Tuvok's ears seem more sticky out? I loved the interplay in that scene and the twist where it appears that we are all in on the fact that it really is Tuvok only for Seven to whammy us with facts that he's an imposter! Chef's kiss.

I was a bit sad that Brent Spiner left Night Court but happy to see him as Data. I also liked him in an episode of the paper chase which was a show about law students. My favorite Character that he played was in an episode of the twilight zone called Dead Run. John de Lancie was also in dead run. Rene Auberjonois was an actor that I grew up watching on our local PBS station. He was in a lot of the plays that they would show during the week. Leonard Nimoy played the husband of Golda in one of the plays on that was shown on my little PBS station. Loving season 3 of Picard. Would like to see Jeffrey Combs show up.

This the second episode in a row where a character who isn’t who we thought. It was a waste to bring back Daniel Davis to not really play Moriarty. I hope they don’t do the same with Tim Russ. He needs to appear again but actually as Tuvok.

When we first saw the red eyes a few episodes back I thought it was going to be Pah Wraiths. They can read minds/induce visions, but I don't know if there is anyway to connect the wormhole/celestial temple to Jean Luc.

I don't know how close this is to what will happen. It came to me as I was trying to get to sleep. During Frontier Day, when they are in among the ships they will use a wired in Data to identify or capture the changelings now that the ships talk to each other.

Yeah, that smirk was my favourite bit in the Seven/"Tuvok" scene. Obviously Seven had already just revealed that it's defo a Changeling because of her trick, but I looked at that thinking "yeah... that is not a Vulcan smile/smirk" haha. Well played and creepy by Tim Russ as you said!

I'm convinced the "face" is a Conspiracy worm alien. They're using very similar tactics: infiltrating Starfleet at the highest level, odd fleet maneuvers. I thought the goons were Jem Hadar joined with them halfway through the episode.

I think one of the most challenging and unsettling things about P3 is that it's validating a lot of the discourse around the problems with Starfleet or Picard himself and his decisions and (I think in a healthy way) undermining the very child-like assumption that we grew up with that "Picard is always right because he's the hero" or that "Starfleet is automatically justified because they're the good guys." On the one hand, this is nice to see; critical theory applied to fictional systems of power in the media we watch. On the other hand, it's painful to see what had been originally conceived of as a post-scarcity techno-utopian future we should all be striving for reduced to a cyberpunk world where humans keep making the worst choices, as individuals and as a society. TNG portrayed a world we should *want* to live in. Most later series portrayed a frightening future best avoided.

I thinks it’s always been a trope of Star Trek that utopia is not self sustaining. There are always threats from without as well as within to keep it from devolving into opportunism, hate and fear. Many episodes dealt with this, the Drumhead being one. It takes vigilance and courage to recognize it and maintain the values of such a society.
@MrARock001 Жыл бұрын
@@nel1962 that's true, but I feel like the lesson of Drumhead (and TNG in general) is that they need to remain uncompromising in their evolved values to protect themselves from backsliding into fear and paranoia, *despite* threats like Romulan or Klingon spies. In Drumhead, the real threat was revealed to be the paranoid admiral, not either of the suspects. DS9 meanwhile has Sisko doing some pretty morally compromising things in the interest of winning the Dominion war, on top of the suggestion that Section 31 might be necessary for the security of the Federation. It's subtle, but I feel like it was a big departure for them to suggest that the evolved morality of humans in the 24th century was only possible in peace time.

I think one of the keys to identifying the Changelings is the transporter. Seems like the Changelings avoid the transporter for some reason. Maybe the transporter technology can identify them as Changelings as they are being reconstructed. Jack is Pah Wrath possessed. The red eyes is the giveaway. The big bad is he bug aliens from another galaxy that infiltrated Star Fleet in Season 1 of TNG.
@bc175 Жыл бұрын
I know the project changelings are referred to as prisoners of war, but seeing the small size of them I wonder if they were actually some of the 'Hundred changelings' sent out by the founders of which Odo was one of. Section 31 could have hunted for them after they learned of them knowing they would have limited to no knowledge of the dominon and their origins making their plan to make them assassins make more sense, as they may have hoped to brainwash them into obedience.

Been watching your reviews for a while now but not sure I've ever commented. I really like that you have a very reasoned take on things despite being a huge fan of the entire universe. Really enjoyed this episode and your theory with Jack is something I've been thinking as well. So many great scenes but Seven and Tuvok was a proper chess game. Worth the price of admission alone.

This episode was by far one of the best episodes of Star Trek ever. The acting was superb and the storyline was well done. Levar Burton and Brent Spinner were amazing.

I've got other ideas about Jack. Got to think he might be part changeling after all. The way Vadic talks, suggests she wants to take him to the "great link" (or smaller link as they split off?). The telepathic abilities, well, when Odo was a solid, there was this episode where he linked with the others in the shuttle, right? With the added abilities of these changelings, they might have such abilities. Keep in mind the goal of the project, might Jack be the "final" version?
@ManateeGag Жыл бұрын
Now that I've heard you theory about Jack's abilities, it makes me think that Vadic's "boss" is a member of the Undine (Species 8472).
