I've been thinking about a potential series set outside the Milky Way for a while. Setup: The Q contact the Federation that they are now satisfied with their progress and are deemed ready for a task they have selected them for. They are to ready a small fleet which will accompany one of theirs on an excursion to another galaxy to observe a phenomenon that is predicted to occur there. Starfleet is interested in charting unknown space, but suspicious as to why the Q would need the help of "lesser creatures" for a mere observation. Turns out that galaxy has their own Q-level species that is very territorial - which means freely using their powers there would risk a "war of gods", likely to devastate both galaxies. So Starfleet would take on the task of traversing and exploring that galaxy, with a Q as guide and observer, mostly contained to a static body. They would not use their power unless the mission would otherwise fail, or to return the fleet home after fulfilling it. This would set up a Voyager-like series that has way more plot hooks built into the setting already. You have the conflict of a god-like being with the power to handwave any hardships refusing their help and demanding they push forward. In them you also have an available reset-button so you can afford to push the crew to the very brink. But in that there's the potential to set up an end-series cliff hanger with the local powers becoming aware of and confronting the Q... Multiple ships means several factions that interact with each other, with the potential for conflict that slowly unfolds over multiple seasons despite them constantly being on the move. Having individual ships go on solo missions. Having the fleet prepared for a long-term mission allows the writers to address many of the gripes people had with Voyager's supposed plot holes as well. And in contrast to pretty much all other Trek series you already have a pre-defined end you can push out as far as you need to and then use it to wrap up once you're done.
@ThanksIfYourReadIt2 жыл бұрын
The Q already stated 2 things. They change the entire universe multiple times and basicly never work locally. (the moon gravity thing) Second is they stated that position is not something they concerned with. They sorta omnipresent, the only thing they move around is time, space is meaningless to them including universal level. Third, they stated to frequent the beggining of big bang that represents the universe not just a galaxy, furthure showing theire carelessness when it comes to position or territory in the entirity of the universe. So that part of the plot needs change or retconing>
@SKy_the_Thunder2 жыл бұрын
@@ThanksIfYourReadIt On the other hand, the Galactic Barrier is typically associated with the Q, set up to protect the Milky Way from similar beings. As far as I know there is no direct canonical connection, but as the most powerful beings known in the galaxy, they at the very least tolerate its existence for one reason or another. For the statements you quote: They're all general enough to allow for a wide range of interpretations. Those could even be addressed in the reason the Q would recruit Starfleet: "But you said you operate across all space, no?" - "In general, yes. But there are a couple spots declared off limits by those who claim ownership and are harder to access. You wouldn't be thrilled about someone dragging their measurement equipment across your home just to observe the way the paint chips off that crack in your wall, would you? Things tend to get messy and before you know it, you have to repair a couple billion years of intergalactic history - which can get complicated, let me tell you..."

No. However, being a teenaged Mega-Trekker back in the '80's, I and many others considered the truly exceptional FASA Star Trek role-playing game series and it's many finely-written sourcebooks to be Official Canon at the time. We also considered Fred and Martha Goldstein's 1980 book: 'Star Trek Spaceflight Chronology', (which the later FASA series was based on), to be Official Canon. They both more-or-less were until after TNG's first season, when FASA lost the rights to publish books based on the Star Trek universe...😉🖖🏻

And when there are exceptions to that rule its always stated it took centuries or millennia to make the trip. Though really, when you think about it, space folding is a potential idea for FTL equivalent methods of travel - if its ever cracked then moving between galaxies would be not any more difficult then moving across a solar system, you'd just need to be able to accurate predict your target destination or have some form of impossibly advanced sensors that ignored space-time and could get an instant image of far off targets without waiting for light to catch up. Might require a lot more power, though. But since its all theoretical... Who knows?

It's sad that the greatest Science Fiction series in the world has not been successfully translated to English. Travel to other galaxies, even other universes and a scope that surpasses many other Science Fiction universes while not normal normal, it happens frequently ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perry_Rhodan ). While I'm not saying another series should go that far, it would be nice if they did widen their horizons a little. Just for example, we know the hero ship is not really in danger. Something they did solve in Perry Rhodan with the hero ship being big enough to carry other completely self-sufficient ships with it. Say, like a ship the size of a D'deridex, carrying several Defiant-Class ships. In Perry Rhodan neither these ships, nor it's crews have the same plot armor as the hero ship or the main characters. And yes, they did mange to get the reader attached to a crew before letting them go down with the ship at least once. And that's just one example how a wider horizon could make a show more interesting.

My guess is that the mycelial network does stretch across the universe, but the barrier also cuts through subspace, causing the mycelial network to be split between the galaxy and the wider universe. It wakes up and moves then return to half-asleep mode. When it comes within scanning distance of a galaxy, it'll power up to 100% and can then navigate through the barrier just fine and comes on in for munchies!!

So, does this mean that the Tauri ships in Stargate have more advanced engines than all of Star Trek? Since they travel between galaxies quite often.

Yeah, but they use Stargates, not shipboard stardrives.

More research required, at least if you want to include books (see Vendetta) this book describes the "doomsday machines" origin and the bigger threat, It is a fantastic story that combines Guinan's people and the Borg, Basically the Doomsday device was a prototype designed to destroy the Borg but the story combines Captain Picard's life and connections, tying in many of the "cannon" story lines (Sorry Must try harder😉)

The Iconians fled to Andromeda, a galaxy that in canon was dying or at least being overrun with deadly radiation that the clarktech advanced Kelvans could not cope with? Granted, Star Trek usually gets time scales wrong and explains such errors away as "subspace shenanigans" and so if the Iconians fled to Andromeda hundreds of thousands of (Earth) years ago, they could have been there when the "scouring" of the galaxy was not so bad the Kelvans had not left yet. Again with that stupid galactic barrier. It serves no meaningful purpose, and almost does not even actually exist in the Star Trek Universe. Space travel being as hard as it is it makes no sense that the barrier that is supposed to keep out extra galactic threats can not stop a starship from pushing through the bramble and back in. Any exo-galactic species wanting in could literally just push in with moderate effort and it is not like they can not get the energy they need along the way, go to sleep, save that energy pulled form wandering star system or rogue planets, or hit up some minor galaxy nearby the Milky Way until its time and then get to work. The Barrier rightly makes no sense and serves no meaningful purpose. Hinting at alternate universes, or that there is actually life beyond the galaxy (when you still have not actually touched and mapped the far side of the galaxy you are in) seems like a set up with no pay off ever.
@andromidius2 жыл бұрын
Its possible the Iconians are the ones doing the scouring in Andromeda. Also the Galactic Barrier might not be there to keep things out, just keep us in. If we're talking hyper advanced civilisations its possible the Milky Way is a massive galaxy wide experiment, and the Barrier is just there to stop us from realising what's out there looking inwards.
@christopherg23472 жыл бұрын
Given that it destroyed the Kelvans ship, I think it os is working quite well at hindering invaders. Or how do you think the 23rd century federation would have fared against a Kelvan ship? Also the barrier could be against something very specific, only hindering starships by accident.

The young Jean-Luc should have stuck to archaeology because he clearly doesn't know beans about astronomy. There's plenty of matter in intergalactic space that a Planet Killer could feed on. Whole star systems have been ejected out there. Besides, a spacecraft that's miles long with a hull made out of solid neutronium would have the mass of a small star, its momentum would be enough to punch through the Barrier like it wasn't even there.

The fact that Kelvans and other extragalactic entities like the ones in Cat's Paw only show up in TOS shows how poor and less imaginative TNG and the following series are when compared with TOS (not even counting the socio-political/philosophical commentary level of TOS). Even the Q are just more like comical devices than actual interesting plot elements.
