Filmation -- the bargain basement boys of animation -- did great with the storytelling end of ST: TAS. The episode "The Magicks Megus-Tu" was rather subversive for the time and pushed me, 13 years old then, further away from organized religion -- in a good way.

I met both Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner at a convention when my son was about 7 years old. We stood in a long, long, long line to get autographs and I had a book by each of them to be signed. When we got to the pair Leonard signed Bill's book and Bill signed Leonard's book for me. They also took time to talk to my son and ask him how he was doing. Great people and a wonderful memory that my son and I still remember to this day. I saw William Shatner years later at another convention and he was still very friendly and approachable even with the huge crowd waiting to see him.

Nimoy was a fantastic actor with exceptional range! If he had not been cast as Spock he still would have had a very full and “storied” career, but most of us probably wouldn’t know him.

The animated series doesn't get enough love. It taught us much about Vulcan, gave us new tribbles, and even managed to borrow from the fiction of master writer Larry Niven. It was also so much freer to give us truly exotic aliens. Nonetheless, it was great to hang on to the rest of the cast. Uhura got to run the Enterprise (when all the men, under an alien presence, were acting goofy), and it was great to hear Sulu's distinctive voice. Also, as much as the show gets summed up as Kirk-Spock-McCoy, you keep hearing about so many people who grew up to tackle engineering because they were inspired by Scotty. In fact, that makes Trek truly unique among fandoms. Everywhere else, you see people dressing up to honor some movie or show, but so many Trekkers wanted to actually BUILD the world of Trek in our reality -- and went a long way to that, too. (If I ever get a cellular, I want an old flip phone just so I can pretend I'm saying "Kirk to Enterprise" -- heck, as a kid I loved pretending to do that with just my wallet.) I Am Not Spock is a wonderful inside look at Trek and confirms that Roddenberry himself never really "got" Vulcans, he saw them as a running gag, a foil always meant to lose to human emotion and derring-do, but Nimoy went a long way to inventing their world and giving them their own dignity. Hey, I could go on, but the main thing is that Nimoy was a trouper, having survived Zombies of the Stratosphere, or played a kind of sinister prequel to Spock in The Brain Eaters, and I think that taught him, Ya always gotta look out for the actors. And when that comes to Trek, that's nearly everything.

Leonard Nimoy was always very loyal to those he worked with. When made his directorial debut on the Night Gallery episode, he proposed they cast Lesley Ann Warren, whom he had just worked with on Mission Impossible. We still miss him to this day.

RIP to prolific and deeply creative Star Trek : TOS writer Dorothy C. (aka "D.C.") Fontana, who passed away at age 80 Dec.2, 2019. She was a very important part of "fleshing out" and help defining who and what the various lead characters were, especially so Spock. She was one of a few writers who made the great Sci-fi writer Harlan Ellison's story City On The Edge of Forever the excellent episode it was, and my personal favorite. To read about her, she was very prolific in screenwriting and polishing others works so as to make them screen worthy and she was one tough broad who didn't suffer male fools at a time when discrimination against female writers was very real in Hollywood (hence the gender ambiguous D.C. Fontana). Her writing was excellent.

Star Trek wouldn't have been what it is without DC Fontana. She was really a great SF writer. And despite being a woman, you don't see any of the current feminist distortions(like STD's Female Starfleet) in her work. City On the Edge of Forever is probably the best TOS episode ever, but Harlan Ellison being who he was, just HAD to make a big fuss about the changes that were made to his original text. To almost everyone else, the episode was just perfect.

I grew up basically without a father or anyone else to look up to. TV became my source of morality. I learned a lot of what I needed to know from Star Trek and other shows from this era (and yes, my mom too). I was absolutely crushed when Nimoy passed. I cried for days. I know it's Hollywood, but back then, heroes were heroes. Personified on the big (or small) screen. They are who we grew up with and they shaped many minds, for better or worse. Spock was an unforgettable character portrayed by an equally unforgettable actor...Leonard Nimoy. There can never be a replacement.

I watched the original Star Trek in the 60’s with my family. My dad loved it and it was great family time. My youngest son watched all the other Star Trek shows and continues to do so with his 2 girls! We owe a debt of gratitude to Lucille Ball and Desilou for giving this show a chance. In my opinion Spock is the greatest tv character ever created. No other fictional character is as great as Spock. I think J.R. Ewing is a close second but Spock is completely unique. According to his second bio, Nimoy also stood up for his friend Martin Landau (ironically the first choice to portray Spock) by refusing to be used as leverage against him when offered a starring role on the already successful "Mission: Impossible". Yup, all around nice guy! The documentary directed (It think) by his son really showed how hard he would work to provide for his family. In one part, it was shown how he would fly out to do guest appearances at shopping malls and such to meet fans and then fly back to shoot more episodes the next day.

My favorite production with Leonard Nimoy is the 1981 movie Vincent, in which he is Theo Van Gogh. He carries the entire production beautifully. As much as I loved Spock and Paris, I adored his rendition of Theo. What a marvelous actor Leonard Nimoy was. He is sorely missed.

I was the same, I read the Alan Dean Foster books over and over and I also still have my paperback copy of Splinter of the Minds Eye that I got back in 78. I have had to pleasure of meeting Mr Nimoy on 3 separate occasions at different Star Trek conventions or Comincons. I had him and the entire cast (except Deforest Kelly who had passed) sign my extended version copy of Star Trek: The Motion picture at a Star Trek convention in the early 2000's in Los Angeles, that was one of the highlights of any convention I have attended.

Really liked this. Really touching that Mr. Nimoy stood up for his castmates like that. Of course I loved the character of Spock just as so many did and I really enjoyed In Search Of as well. Another great video! No, I'm not surprised that Nimoy helped his friends. That was his greatest appeal as an actor and human being. He was real, and true and loyal. a great actor and truly a class act I love your channel Dave, these were truly my times I was 0 in 1970, and 20 in 1990, so I grew up right in this era when kids would build forts and trails in the woods(I built one that we called Chaca trail for our favorite trail it was required that you limp like a monkey while you were on it) The absolute worst, most devastating thing that your parents could hold against you when being punished was you cant go outside and play. i always opted, for the licks, i had important business to conduct outsideYes, I love the old shows from that era, much better than the stuff out there today.

It was strange to see...Captain Pike’s first officer was Majel Barrett, nurse Chapel from the original series, only she’s got long thick dark hair. She acts like a Vuncan. Puke calls her “Number one.” It’s a great episode, and they incorporated Capt. Christopher Pike and his relationship with Spock in “the menagerie.” Spock risked his career out of loyalty and respect for Capt. Pike...

Exceptional! You went where few could go in just 7 minutes! I remember seeing Leonard in a British Movie of the Week on ABC in 1972 or '73. He was a psychic mystery-solver and was always smiling, as was the perky Susan Hampshire who assisted him and was an interest, I think. God, how I wished that would become a series! But it didn't. I think it was called "Baffled". Only Nimoy vehicle where he smiled a lot. I was also a fan of the animated series. I have the DVDs. Thanks.

I remember loving that show, and being scared to watch it at the same time (watching some episodes between my fingers! ^_^), Its been so long I can't remember the episode(s) that Leonard was in, but I'll check IMDB and dig them up myself later. 2:10 : Just like you, I couldn't wait to see that first episode! I remember watching the 'Saturday Morning Preview' show the previous night (they did things like that back in the day ^_^), and barely being able to sleep, waiting for the morning and the show to air. Oh, if only I could recapture that youthful exuberance one more day ^_^ I never did have that viewmaster you had, but "Yesteryear" was always my favorite episode (with "The Slaver Weapon" a close second, and it was only years later, when I was in college, that I found out that the latter story was adapted from a Larry Niven story called "The Soft Weapon"). Again, like you, I read all those "Log Books" adaptations.....wonder if I can find any of them on Amazon....time to check ^_^ On "I Am Not Spock": I've got to admit, that book (even though I never read it), put a bit of a guilt trip on me. I somehow felt personally responsible for his lack of ability to find more work outside of Trek. It was as if my like of him as this one character made everyone say "We can't hire him! He can only play Spock!" ^_^ I have heard this story before, and it is nice to hear how strong the friendship was between the cast of The Original Series (even after the Prima Donna escapades of Shatner ^_^).

Chup Smith My favorite episode was with the Horta, titled “The Devil in the Dark.” I never fail to get the chills when Spock mind melds with the last Horta, and he cries out, “PAIN! Pain! "Star Trek", "Star Wars", "Space 1999" - all of these I became a fan of because of my father. And for me, the character that did affect me the most was Mr. Spock - with a raised eyebrow for Capt. Kirk, a quick quip directed at "Bones" McCoy(usually turning his vitriol back at him), or even speaking the word "fascinating", Mr. Spock could redirect the quirkiness that was happening aboard the USS Enterprise. So it was second nature for Mr. Nimoy to stand up for his castmates as easily as Mr. Spock would stand up for his crewmates.

I have to agree. Nimoy was perfect for the role of Spock. His devotion to his fellow castmates is admirable. Honestly , I didn't recognize him on In Search Of without his makeup even though his voice was familiar. Didn't even know he was on Mission Impossible til I saw the episodes and he was great. My favorite Star Trek movie is the Fourth One which highlighted Nimoy's ability as a Comedic Director.

Personally, I'm not a bit surprised. That's just the type of person he was. In fact, I read that he was in tears at the performance of the actor that played Dr. McCoy in the JJ Abrams Star Trek movies. His performance was so close to Deforest Kelly. Leonard Nimoy, the likes we shall never see again.

I remember seeing him on Mission Impossible as Paris in reruns also. I think he did a show called in search of. I have loved all the star trek series, movies. I have just about all of them. I do not have the enhanced original series, I got it when it first came out and looks like the late 1960's series where the enhanced has CGI added to it. Still waiting for season three of Star Trek discovery.

I attended a comic-con outside Ft. Benning in 1987. James Doohan, DeForest Kelly and George Takei were there. They had nothing but praise for Leonard Nimoy. They did however avoid any good or bad comments about William Shatner. If they did say anything, it was always very bland and innocuous.

Rick, Thank you for taking the time to do this! Very nice and informative. I agree with a lot of the people who posted here, there are other shows Mr. Nimoy was on that were also great. I remember him guest starring on an episode of one of my favorite all time shows Perry Mason. It was nice to see him on the show but it is my only time when I did not like him on a show because his character turned out to be the bad guy and I thought it was a weak and unlikeable character in the episode. Leonard Nimoy was not only a good actor but also a smart actor and director. His choices in roles and projects to do are extremely good and stand the test of time. I would like to see some of his projects in reruns now. The original Mission Impossible and all of the In Search Of shows would be nice to see rebroadcast in their entirety and I think they would be as interesting and draw as large of a market share as they did when they were new. I remember Splinter of The Mind’s Eye, It’s interesting that The Empire Strikes Back used a couple of scenes that were lifted from the novel, especially Luke crashing his X-Wing Fighter and the Luke/Vader lightsaber duel (although there was no mention of Luke and Vader having a father son relationship ship) as well as Vader having zero tolerance for failure from his Imperial underlings as when he memorably cut an Imperial governor in half with his lightsaber for botching a capture of Luke and company. Also as to Nimoy I always remember him from a memorable Twilight Zone episode that takes place in WW2 and also In Search Of And his role in the 1978 remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

Spock was my favorite character from Star Trek. I remembered watching the cartoon version of Star Trek this one of Spock’s childhood and even being picked on and even being bullied by other children. I felt that way, too when I was 6 years old that I was a so learner while growing up. I even kept trying to make friends with the kids in my own neighborhood. I did make some friends of just being myself. It was hard for me as a sweet and outgoing kid growing up. Even when I was in junior high that was the worst 2 years of my life and even awkward stages when I was 12 and 13 years old. Even liking my 2 cats a lot. Most of the kids that don’t know that I also liked dogs,too. I wish that I could go back and tell these 2 boys that bullied me and said that I do liked dogs also. That depends if the dog likes me or not. I will called them both stupid idiots for not asking that I liked dogs,too. I had neighbors with dogs and even petted a few of them w/o fear. In my late teens and early 20’s that I loved this one dog that used to lived next door to me. She did gave me a friendly bark at me when I called her name and said hi to her. It gave me a break to cuddled my 2 cats. Even this one guy that I became friends with because of his dog was a cute Beagle. The dog was so sweet and friendly. I do liked cats and dogs about the same. Don’t judge me that I do loved animals or not being afraid of certain creepy crawlers in critters. I’m just liked anybody else.

I've watched this a few times and decided it was time to comment. I loved Leonard Nimoy as Spock, but also as the talented man he was. Now to the books, "I Am Not Spock" was not the book everyone thought. The title was named after a chapter in the book. It was about a meeting of a little fan and his mother. He even made the comment that if he had to play anyone it would be Spock. He wrote the second book "I Am Spock" to straighten the fans out about how he felt playing Spock. I would recommend you read both books, starting with the original. Leonard even admitted that he made a mistake titling the first book as "I Am Not Spock".

Great video, Dave! Watched and loved Star Trek, the original series in reruns, and watched and really enjoyed the Saturday morning cartoon version. I recommend the documentary, "For the Love of Spock" made by Nimoy's son, Adam Nimoy, to anyone. My favorite non Spock role brought to life by Nimoy is Dr. David Kibner in "Invasion of the Bodysnatchers". Great film all around, with a superb cast. I drew a caracture of Nimoy's Spock years ago.
