I really enjoyed this episode. I love the idea of a society that has to live in the moment because they have no memory. And I love that they did an amnesia plot without it being the whole “bonk on the head that gives you amnesia and another bonk on the head that brings the memories back.” And I love the reference to Greek Mythology in the title. My only issue is Batel. Is she a ship captain or a JAG officer?
@NeuroD369 Жыл бұрын
Yes. lol And I feel you… She served as a Ship’s Captain as a standing commanding officer to whom was assigned the USS Cayuga and was also Field Captain as a JAG officer. One may assume that as Thee ‘Guy’ in the Field, representing the face of Starfleet as acting ambassador, Ship CO, attorney for wayward crewmembers in a pinch, etc. that a required degree in Starfleet law would be apropos and one would think law-minded captains serving in the corps would help your upward mobility from captain to commodore as the competition seems to be tight, as it should be. One might imagine Commodore Geordi La Forge served on some Engineering Council designing innovative starships.

@Sci-Finatics Hello Nick, thanks for your interesting review. I absolutely loved this solid , balanced, fun and interesting episode . It really felt like a TOS episode and the references to the Cage episode, especially the fortress. My heart was racing for Ortegas when she was in her quarters trying to figure out what to do whilst the asteroid rocks were hitting the Enterprise. I am liking how we are seeing more focus of other characters and their continuing story. I loved seeing more of Ortegas in this episode . I loved seeing Pike kicking ass during the shoot out. The meaning that stood out to me in this episode, personally mattered to me is how to live in the moment, and that wanting to forget painful memories, isn’t always necessarily a bad thing as in the end it makes one stronger, resilient, and who one is meant to be. The writing is getting somewhat better as far as characters. But writers shouldn't be learning on a show like this. They should already know how to write. They don't have a clue about the science fiction or military life. Captains can hook up but they can't have a normal relationship. Soldiers have assignments which don't care about their dating life let alone marriage. The only possibility of a relationship is a civilian that can choose to follow you. This are star ships. At best it can take months or years to get from one edge of the known galaxy to the other. Unlike being posted in a foreign country these ships are traveling all the time... A romantic partner would have to be actually on the ship as it traveled. In this era there were no children on these star ships so as soon as you mary and have children you can't stay on the ship anymore. If you not having children there is no reason to get married. There are work around to people getting stationed together but the higher in rank you the harder that is work out. Novice writing.

I'm pretty sure they explained the changing uniforms thing in an episode of _Star Trek: Lower Decks._ Something to do with the fact that all ships got to design their own uniforms under a certain set of parameters. Which is one reason why the uniforms on The Ceritos are subtly different from The Enterprise in _Star Trek the Next Generation._ Also, I do not consider _Discovery_ to be canon. It made too many changes to bloody everything. I feel the same way about _Picard._ Those two are the "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" of the Star Trek universe.

@emaarredondo-librarian Жыл бұрын
Luq didn't have a regular life; everybody in his condition were ordered what to do every day - like slaves, but worse. Now, as he explained, emotional memory was not lost and they tattooed on themselves the most important things, like the names of their loved ones. Living in the moment, just one day at a time, Luq fell in love with a woman, and they had a child. After some time, they left, or died. He forgot about them, but felt the pain of the loss. It happens sometimes to people with dementia, that they forget the names of their loved ones, but remember they are their loved ones.
@bjorn00000 Жыл бұрын
@@emaarredondo-librarian Yeah, that still doesn't quite get there for me. This is a system that existed for a very long time, so how would people get the names to tattoo to themselves, or even know how to tattoo? And the emotional memory concept is okay, but the 50 First Dates concept probably wouldn't work if Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore both had amnesia. Even with dementia people start off with normal memories. That all isn't the point of course! This story (and ST in general) and theme don't depend on it being possible. But that kind of fridge logic just pulled me out of the episode a bit.

@@bjorn00000 Please remember :-), in that planet not everybody was amnesiac. The ruling class living in the palace (and possibly in other dwellings) and the guards, who used helmets, had no memory problems. Even more, the amnesia was totally and (maybe too) quickly reversed by not being exposed to the funky asteroid's radiation. Yep, the concept is far fetched (typical TOS Star Trek!) but a society like that could work since there were people with intact memories in command telling the amnesiac ones everything they had to do. Slavery in the US worked a bit like that. The master could name the enslaved people, decide on their offspring, assign jobs, kill them if they were too rebellious. I think this episode was about that slavery, even when accepted, isn't never really voluntary. Belonging to a cult, maybe?

They should be wearing discovery uniforms but thats down to bad writing where they didn't thought things out. Obviously this is an oversight of the team for this show why this show wasn't cannon in the first place as i don't think there all clued up on star trek there knowledge is very limited. They seem to know how to make the show look like star trek but as for writing and there knowledge it shows a lot even way back from discovery season 1

I saw it as an allegory to Alzheimer's/dementia...

thank you for doing a review of this episode! the ear-piercing ringing they put in the episode in every scene made me turn it off, it was unbearable. i'd rather just watch a review of the episode and skip to the next one.

This episode was pretty boring, which was disappointing really. Though the scene where Ortegas sends the ship into a barrel roll while blasting a hole into the asteroid was amazing

"Trouble getting close..." Ah, what? Don't know, your GF just tried to prosecute your friend/First Office and want 30 years in jail, and make her career. How would you want to be around someone like that? (Oh, I must have close issues. Sorry that I would want to get away from a tyrant person. Just business. Oh, and if you stab me with a knife, I'll be the one to apologize. What is this crazy making?

Not liking these recent SNW episodes. Reminds me of how boring TOS was growing up as a kid. Zero interest in Pike’s romance drama. Isn’t this like the 3rd chick he’s been with? The first 2 episodes of this season were awesome, now it’s starting to go downhill.

too bad they dumped on Spock once again in this episode. Ortegas is just awful towards him, constantly humiliating him and making disrespectful and derogatory comments. Very off-putting characteristic of the show.

🤮I skipped over much of the past two episodes. I couldn't even get through this one. For me at least season 2 is a big disappointment.

It was boring and juvenile.

Love Strange New Worlds so far but this episode was truly disappointing and felt lost from start to finish...like a wanna be fan service overkill coz of the Riegel 7 ToS episode. In my book, by far the worst episode of SNW so far but so what, 1 episode out of all of the rest so far, that s still a truly impressive resume.

This episode was boring and 2 dimensional. Very ship in a bottle. However the highlight in the episode was when Spock said, emotions are not facts. Freaking awesome. Please tell this to all the gender ideology people who feel They're a woman, but the facts and science say otherwise. Thank you Spock for remaining reasonable and logical.

somehow this line got past the women writers on the show. Spock is the most illogical member of the crew on SNW.
