To put this in context... It was 10 years since the original series was cancelled, and during that time, the fanbase base grew substantially due to the reruns and was at a frantic level when this movie was finally being made. It was such an emotional moment for many of us to see Kirk, Spock et al actually on the big screen. Our loyalty was paid off. Alot of money went into the special effects and we loved it. We had our heroes back and they looked fabulous. That was the primary goal of the movie. The 2nd Trek movie put more effort into the story and character interactions, and ended up being a better film. But the first was special b/c we had our heroes back.

I do think TMP has aged well? I know I’m in the minority with not being bothered by the slow pace of the film. But, I also feel that this might be the purest of the TOS (or any) films about a fundamental Trek principle of exploration and finding new life.

Exactly. This is - without a doubt - the one movie that's most true to Gene Roddenberry's original vision. A few others came close. But they didn't scratch the surface of the honesty and complexity of this one. And you absolutely nailed that Star Trek doesn't need the SW pew pew pew action to be its own, intriguing and entertaining thing. I've seen this movie many times. And I have never been bored by a second of it.

@@RalphKruhm I would actually say Voyage Home its all the check boxes for what The Original Series was. Whether that be "Gene Roddenberry's original vision" or not is up for debate, but I do wish it got more praise than I often see it getting. It too doesn't have any of the "pew pew pew action", nor does it have any "bad guy" to fight, and every member of the principal cast gets moments to shine (the one thing I dislike the most about Wrath of Khan, everyone except Kirk, Spock, and McCoy getting pushed to the background). And unlike Decker and Ilia, Jillian doesn't outshine the original cast. The only thing I don't care for with Voyage Home is the Bakshi Lord of the Rings soundtrack LOL

@@k1productions87 IV has its heart at the right place - but, without going into spoiler territory here, there's not a single line from the series' opening that would even remotely describe what's happening in this movie.
@k1productions87

@@RalphKruhm Its not about what's in the opening line, but rather what the mission statement of the series was. Exploring the Human Condition, and also bringing topical socio-political commentary to the forefront Lighthearted adventure without being outright comical The characters being the important thing and not just silent observers in it, while also using technology to solve the problem rather than technology BEING the problem. Technically... NONE of the films follow the opening line. The only one that does is the one people hate the most. All the others either stay close to Earth or only go where we have already gone. And they sure as hell do not "seek out new life and new civilizations", in fact the only one that goes where no Man has gone before is actually seeking out the OLDEST life

There's an observation that they did a clever, if daring thing with the motion picture. Instead of trying to recreate the emotions of the show immediately, they start with everyone being a bit older, and a bit of a jerk. Kirk is obsessed with keeping the Enterprise, Spock has almost no emotions, but through the adventure, they come back together. It's bold because fans want to see that magic immediately, but it's clever because realistically it can take time to rekindle that chemistry - it's not being forced for fan service.

I see this as the best example of how Kirk would act in his older age. Not sitting behind a desk and giving up, but trying desperately to re-capture his glory days while refusing to admit to himself that he may be out of touch, or simply not "have it" anymore. As opposed to the other example of older Kirk, where he's not even Kirk anymore,... he's Pike. LOL

This is a very good comment. While "The Wrath of Kahn" is the better film overall, "The Motion Picture" was more sophisticated with respect to theme and cinematography, two crucial elements of the new wave cinema movement that thrived from the 60's to the early 80's. In that sense, it had more in common with "2001: A Space Odyssey"; the pursuit of VGER and exploration of its interior are clearly inspired by the former film's maximization of analog camera effects. Nevertheless, it carried the germ of the story-driven, fan-servicing ethos that overtook new wave cinema in the 80's. Unlike "2001", one was able watch "The Motion Picture" in 1979 and come away feeling satisfied, even if even Decker's decision to get shanghaied by VGER seemingly made no sense. My mother took me to see "The Motion Picture" when I was six years old and I thought it was dope. As a point of comparison, she took me to see "Revenge of the Pink Panther" around the same time and I *so* whined once the cartoon part (ie the opening credits) stopped that my poor, dear mother grabbed me and fled the theater before other moviegoers banded together to kill her fatuous, simpleton son.

Scotty was WWII D-Day hero. Juno Beach. After shooting two snipers, Doohan led his men to higher ground through a field of anti-tank mines, where they took defensive positions for the night. Crossing between command posts at 23:30 that night, Doohan was hit by six rounds fired from a Bren gun by a nervous Canadian sentry:[2] four in his leg, one in the chest, and one through his right middle finger. The bullet to his chest was stopped by a silver cigarette case given to him by his brother.[7] His right middle finger had to be amputated, something he would conceal on-screen during most of his career as an actor, sometimes with a flesh-colored glove with a "faux finger."

This movie more than any other made the enterprise feel like a true character rather than a ship to get them from point a to point b. The first three movies really do a great job with that. The visuals are FANTASTIC and the score is timeless. Hearing Kirk joyously say “that way” at the end of the movie smiling with his crew back and the enterprise sailing off to new adventures fills me with joy. Buckle up for wrath of Kahn. It’s a brutal movie but there’s a reason it’s still many fans favorites!

I loved your reaction to the reveal of the Enterprise. You may not have notices, but the hull actually has a 4 color tone pearlescent iridescent paint scheme. As the camera moves, you see faint blue that shifts to red, gold or green. It is absolutely beautiful. Many model builders work months to paint their Enterprises with the iridescent paint job. The transport chief, Rand, was the young blonde Yoeman in the first season. And the other person who died besides Sonak, according the the novel written by Gene Roddenberry, was Admiral Lori Ciana, Kirk's ex-wife who was joining the crew as a last-minute replacement.

Doctor (formerly Nurse) Chapel is played by Majel Barret-Roddenberry, Gene Roddenberry's wife. She played the ship's first officer in the pilot episode of the show, but that was too progressive for the execs back then. In The Next Generation she also plays a returning character related to one of the main crew there. I think V'Ger's life can be summed up in this legendary quote. _"We shall not cease from exploration And the end of all our exploring Will be to arrive where we started And know the place for the first time." ~ T.S. Elliott_ V'Ger came home looking for answers and needed Dad to explain to him about life. An age old AI came back to Earth having an existential crisis. And truthfully begging for help. Persis Khambatta (God rest her) did an exquisite job portraying V'Ger's actual desperation at getting the answers it needed. Poor probe had literally exhausted its supply of hope. Crossed the universe to get home hoping against hope that the answer would end its anguish, that the entity that created it could help. The more I've thought on V'Ger as I've gotten older the more I sympathize and feel for it. I also appreciate that once V'Ger was presented with irrefutable proof that the carbon units really were the creator, V'Ger just rolled with it.

Seeing it in a theater or on the much larger/sharper modern TVs is a vastly better experience even without the Director's Cut changes (though they help a lot - it's surprising how much adding to the length actually makes the movie feel faster by improving the pacing).

And every time I see that scene, even in just the little slices included here, I _always_ tear up. So good. *So* good.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned in your previous Star Trek reaction, the fact that it was Lucille Ball who gave the original show a chance. The first two seasons were filmed by her studio, Desilu Productions, a major player at the time. She even overruled the board of directors to produce the pilot.

"Don't blue them!" I am so grateful to you for reacting to this movie! And I am so glad you enjoyed it. As I always say, in expressing my unabashed love for this film: it is a feast for the eyes and ears. Gorgeous to look at, even mesmerizing at times. The V'Ger flyover is one of my favorite sequences in any film ever, visually and musically. It tranports us so completely to this other world, so strange and beautiful, and all with practical effects. No science fiction movie, and certainly no Star Trek movie, would ever be so daring now, nor have such faith in the audience. As good as Wrath of Khan is, Motion Picture is the only one of all the Star Trek movies that has a truly epic feel to it. As usual with director's cuts, it's a mixed bag. Some things are better, some are worse. The mystery and power of V'Ger is lost with the CGI version at the end. We should never fully know what V'Ger's shape is, and it certainly shouldn't be CGI. Oh well.

Even the "Special Longer Version" released on VHS and used for TV broadcasts was vastly superior to the theatrical cut, as the theatrical version cut out so much of the dialog that was important for context. Much of the SLV dialog was in the Director's Edition, but a few lines remained missing. To give an example, here is a string if dialog from the theatrical version ILIA: "The Carbon Unit infestation is to be removed from the Creator's planet" KIRK: "WHY?" ILIA: "You INFEST Enterprise. You interfere with the Creator in the same manner" KIRK: "... Machine? ... V'ger? .... V'GER!!" Yet in the Director's Edition, this dialog is properly expanded ILIA: "The Carbon Unit infestation is to be removed from the Creator's planet" KIRK: "WHY?" ILIA: "You INFEST Enterprise. You interfere with the Creator in the same manner" KIRK: "Carbon Units are not an infestation. They are... a natural function of the Creator's planet. They are living things" ILIA: "They are not true life forms. Only the Creator and other similar life forms are true" BONES: "Similar life forms...? Jim, V'ger is saying its creator is a machine" KIRK: "... Machine? ... V'ger? .... V'GER!!" BUT, there is one line still missing from Decker, which we hear in the "Special Longer Version" LIA: "The Carbon Unit infestation is to be removed from the Creator's planet" KIRK: "WHY?" ILIA: "You INFEST Enterprise. You interfere with the Creator in the same manner" KIRK: "Carbon Units are not an infestation. They are... a natural function of the Creator's planet. They are living things" ILIA: "They are not true life forms. Only the Creator and other similar life forms are true" BONES: "Similar life forms...? Jim, V'ger is saying its creator is a machine" DECKER: "Of course! We all create God in our own image" KIRK: "... Machine? ... V'ger? .... V'GER!!" I have a feeling this line was removed to not piss off the religious folks lol

First, you are ADORABLE! Second, what many people misunderstand about why the movie is/seems so long is it is meant to be in order to convey, as best it can, just how truly IMMENSE the Vger cloud/ship is. To be honest, I have never been bored by the amount of time it spent getting to the "Final Act", because for me, sitting in a theatre with my brother in December of 1979 filled me with excitement and apprehension. Before Star Wars came out in the Summer of 1977, myself and my friends had only the original Star Trek series (in reruns) to watch, and that was enough. When ST:TMP was released, it was like coming home... Lastly, you are very fortunate to have seen this version of ST:TMP. I have NEVER gotten to see this newest version with many of the deleted scenes (or parts of scenes) as well as the updated special effects, including getting a glimpse of what the V'ger augmented space vessel looked like. I had NO idea they had updated so much of the SpecialFx or put so much deleted material back into the movie! The SpecialFx were incredible for the time, i have never been displeased by the original SpecialFx in ST:TMP, but what they added is incredible, and every detail is much clearer and sharp. There is much more 'action' and character development/interaction in the second movie. In fact, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search foir Spock, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (yes, i know many pan this movie, but it was plagued by the Writer's Guild strike, the SpecialFx were not done by LucasFilm because they were heavily involved in other projects and the studio wouldnt pay higher prices for LucasFilm's participation), and finally Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, all have a lot more action than ST:The Motion Picture, but if it wasn't for ST:TMP and how well it did in box office receipts, the other 5 movies would probably never been made. By the way, watching logically / emotionally piece together elements of the movie was a treat to watch. I don't want to sound patronizing, but you are pretty damn smart. Live long and prosper. 🤨🖖

Your summary at the end was pretty good. The one part you left out was why Decker was so eager to join with V'Ger: so he could be with Ilia again. And there was some mutual feeling since Ilia was a part of V'Ger at that point too. The movie was kind of slow with so many long shots (like when they were in the shuttle touring around The Enterprise) because at the time the story was secondary to the mere fact that we had The Enterprise again! All fancy and new! Back with the crew after all these years! The movie was more a showcase for the ship and the special effects they could now do, and kind of a love letter to the fans of the original show. Just merely seeing the ship in space was wondrous for fans at the time, which probably seems odd to people today because we've seen spaceships in tv and movies countless numbers times. Back then it was still a novelty. The future movies spend far less time just being dazzled just from being in space because it becomes old hat, and so there will be more focus on telling stories.

I did hate when he tore out all the gorgeous Okudagrams from the Enterprise-A bridge, and instead spraypainted a sound mixer black for the close-up shots, and added all kinds of pipes and switch boards and blinky light panels. Its like he was desperate to make things look LESS advanced whenever possible.

Fun fact: the actor who plays the commander of the Epsilon 9 space station is David Gautreaux. When they were trying to keep the show alive, first there was resistance because it had been cancelled for low ratings, but the reruns showed there was a market for it. So they were able to get an animated series for two seasons as a Saturday morning cartoon, and then they tried to get a movie done, but the financing wasn't there. Then "Star Wars" happened, and there was a LOT more demand for science-fiction, but Leonard Nimoy wouldn't come back, because he felt he was getting type-cast as Spock. And without Spock, they couldn't get a film financed. So they decided to have another TV series (working title "Star Trek Phase II") and the new series would have a new Vulcan, named Xon. David Gautreaux was cast as Xon, so his presence in the film is a nod to the series that wasn't made. And then of course, Nimoy DID come back, so they made this film after all. (There is a TINY amount of screen-test footage of David, in makeup, as Xon, on KZbin. He's still acting; he was in an episode of "Accused" earlier this year.)

One of the issues with going back and forth from a movie, to a series, and back to a movie was how the accounting was handled. I'm no accounting expert, but the gist of it is that all the work done building sets for the first movie. Tearing them down and building sets for the series. And then tearing those down for the final movie, all had to be applied to the cost of the final product. So, Star Trek: The Motion Picture was one of the most expensive movies of its time, at $40 million. Also, the director had cut a lot of the Enterprise-porn and VGer-porn, because they really dragged the movie down. But apparently, when the studio executives saw the first cut they said, "Where are all those special effects we paid for?" Even though these people were in the movie industry, they couldn't understand that you don't use footage just because it was expensive. I was a big Original Series fan. The Motion Picture was not horrible. But, mostly I didn't like it. The long shots were waaay too long. And, the ending felt contrived, to me. I look forward to your reaction to The Wrath of Kahn.
