I have watched this many, many times, but I saw this time, something I never noticed before. Right at the end, at the front of the crowd, a man wipe a tear from his eye, with a smile on his face, embrace, im guessing, his wife or partner, or maybe even a stranger - that is what Star Trek can do, so much more than a show, a series, a film or a book.

I was so sure this would never happen, assuming it was clickbait, that I totally ignored links to this announcement at the time. Now that Picard has premiered and concluded, it still feels unreal. The show had its ups and downs, but my takeaway is that Star Trek at its best is a grand community of vision, engagement, and fun - the latter even when an unknown British Shakespearean actor might, at first, decidedly NOT be there to have fun - with its own struggles and fighting battles unknown to us.

What Patrick Stewart did was phenomenal. He, a middle aged, bald, British actor that most of America didn't know, stepped into an iconic role that was created by a young, handsome American who was, by then a Star Trek legend. He took on the captain's role and made it his own. And that is the mark of a great actor.

Dear #SirPatrickSteward : When I saw you there on stage I felt like getting up on it and tell you this: "I'm an actor myself and I can relate to how it must feel to be turned down for a good role, because you're seen as that other role you're famous for. An actor wants to play, transform into different characters, and get the chance to prove that they can. I know what an actor wants. For better or worse Sir, you got more than you bargained for. People see more in you, they see in you what is lacking in the world: a good leader. I know the lines you are delivering are not written by you. There are authors. However, I think when an actor plays a role well enough, long enough it starts wearing off. You've delighted me with the truths you tell people though your role, with those little speeches, words that I needed to hear and didn't even know I needed to hear them. Or sometimes I thought, I've been meaning to say exactly that for years and never knew how. You've become that captain, a leader people really respect. It's a great responsibility in a sense. So, like it or not, you've become a public figure, you've made your role part of our collective awareness and that's in a way greater than being an actor, at least in your case." - Glad you made that decision! :-)

yay /excite ~ actually I've never much been into Star Trek more broadly and not even really into sci-fi but I always enjoyed The Next Generation for its acting and conversation, and nuance of detail and process -- the engineering, the logistics, the sociology, the politics. TBH I re-watch TNG kinda the same way I watch Seinfeld... it has nothing to do with story or plot even, just the conversations about technical minutiae... best example of this is the scene where Data explains to Worf how to be second in command can re-watch conversations and acting like this ad nauseam over dinner haha

It's going to be on CBS Access, which means you will have to pay a monthly fee for it, just like Discovery. I think they realized Discovery was unable to carry the subscription weight by themselves, so they are going to bring back an old name to get more people to subscribe. I was at that convention, and at one point, they had a show of hands of who hadn't seen Discovery--a good 40% of the crowd hadn't seen it--and these were Trekkies/Trekkers! Apparently us fans aren't as gullible of giving our money away as they thought we were.

I'm cautiously optimistic. Picard's always been my favourite Captain, and The Next Generation was the best series in my opinion. However a lot has changed since then, and they really don't have anything planned out, so it's entirely possible the only link to the TNG aesthetic that this series will have will be Picard himself, which would be incredibly disappointing for anyone wanting a modernised TNG style experience. Mostly though I just don't want this to ruin my memory of Picard. I'll be so sad if this ends up in a Luke Skywalker scenario, where bringing back the character leads to their character development being lost, and the character ending as a dud.
@squishykotetsu5 жыл бұрын
I don't think Sir Stewart would let that happen. During TNG, as the series progressed, he got more and more involved with the actual writing of the character. That is, I think, one of the reasons why he takes so much pride in that show. My point is that he always seemed to have a very clear vision of what he wanted to communicate through that character (the effects of which are evident throughout this comment section) and I highly believe that he won't give that up for a, let's say, reboot with questionable intent a la star wars. I share your doubts for the rest of the show, but I think the character we hold so dearly won't be ruined at all.

Paul, real Star Trek fans my ass. Self proclaimed "real fans" are always so funny. Especially when they label everyone that disagrees with them "not real fans" despite knowing nothing about them. All I see is fans who just constantly cry and complain about everything just because they don't like how CBS or Paramount currently runs things with Star Trek. As a long time fan to Star Trek I have enjoy everything from TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise, the first 10 movies and the current Kelvin timeline movies even now Discovery. I'm grateful we get any new Star Trek at all. CBS owns Star Trek and they can do the hell what they want with the series, franchise. Gene Roddenberry sold the rights a long time ago. What CBS is doing is actually smart, brilliant, logical and reasonable to me. Seriously quit your whining about a paid-subscription streaming platform and cut your cable then all your expenses worries are solved. Get over it.

I've been saying for years it's time to move the story forward and not do yet another star wars copycat origin story. I thought a show set 20ish years after Voyager with say the first Starfleet slip stream ship could be an intriguing setup. Setting out before it was ready to fowl the Borgs plans for a new invasion, set up a full on offensive eventually, reuniting with old friends and allies, making new ones, and exploring all along the way... so many possibilities! An entire galaxy full even!
@marcoyole6105 жыл бұрын

Had to stop watching midway through. It reminds me of the hope i held. For the first time in my life i was looking forward to new Star Trek. I'm "young" enough that TOS and TNG were around for all my life. Didn't care much for it. Watched it occasionally just because spaceships. That changed about ten years ago. A period with no new Star Trek whatsoever. The JJ movies were a thing i did not care for an then this happened. I saw this interview unaware of whoever Kurtzman was but i saw Patrick Steward talking about a sequel to TNG and i was sold. But now? i feel empty watching this. As there probably won't be any Star Trek worth watching in my lifetime.

There are those of us who feel that any ship with the name Enterprise should be distinguished by its 'round' saucer section. The other various saucer shapes, ie Voyager, even TNG, & Ent-E etc, are better suited to other ships than they are to an Enterprise flagship. It would be more of an ode to the Roddenberry original, & the iconic nature of that design would surely help the franchise.

I think Discovery might have left a bad taste in the Star Trek purists mouths. I know I didn't hate it, but it didn't seem like Star Trek. Hopefully we can get back to something more familiar and more like what the fans really wanted.

None of the other Star Trek series can even hold a candle to Next Generation. The way that they inspired imagination and the the character developments of TNG were just the best. Special effects, explosions, action, etc. are not what makes Star Trek unique. They are nice additions to be sure but it was imagination and character development that differentiated Star Trek from any other TV or movie series.
