To be more exact, The TNG theme was a reuse of the original TMP composition with very few changes. And why not? TNG was a series that few people had faith in, few people expected it to fulfill even a single season. And yet it triumphed, and the theme from the Motion Picture is now forever known as the Next Generation theme :).

the boston pops ver. is actually the tmp theme, not tng. the tng theme was based on the tmp theme so they sound very similar

Agreed. This is the best rendition I have heard outside of the original soundtrack version. This lot play it just pitch perfect. That so many good orchestras seem to get something wrong shows just how tricky it must be to play live.

I had a CD decades ago that listed the central melody of this as "Ilia's Theme" and every time I hear that piece it stirs something inside me. This was so well played I think this may be my favorite version of any Trek piece on YT outside its original.

I know this is old...just saying that if you listen to this theme which showed up on a few other Trek movies, you'll notice that for the end credits version, there's always a middle bit that incorporates one of the main themes of the movie. Like in Trek V, it was the Klingon theme.

Yes, as it actually tells you in the overlay title at the beginning of the video. In all honesty this is just two for the price of one - the TNG theme is the first half of this theme, and the very end bit, stitched together without the middle bit.
