'Lower Decks' essentially deconstructs the "redshirt" trope that even by this point was well-known and joked about. Ensign Sita is Next Gen's version of a "redshirt" (Security wears gold by this point) but here, instead of being a disposable character who dies purely as a plot-point, we see her whole self and so, as we should've done all along, we mourn her loss. @@Vipre- I've heard, in my many, many, way too many years as a fan of Star Trek, that there was going to be a Sito Jaxa rescue story on DS9, but due to a scheduling conflict it never coalesced. In some ways, I feel like we missed out on such a great story, but in other ways, Sito's death being her actual death is reminds us that upholding the ideals of the Federation requires vigilance and sacrifice. Also, Sito Jaxa, as a Bajoran, wasn't even a Federation citizen, and she still believed in the Federation enough to willingly risk her life for this mission.

The beauty of science fiction is that it uses normal situations to introduce outlandish theoretical ideas through relatable characters that we grow to love. The Cassie we first met years ago wouldn't have been interested in shifting between alternate versions of our lives. The comics have been exploring alternate universes since the 70s with the original What If? comic, though their Distinguished Competition started doing it in the 60s, and would even have annual team-ups between universes until 1985. It's a classic Science Fiction plot element since possibly the 1800s. Certainly since pulp science fiction magazines gained ground in the 1920s and 30s. May have even existed earlier, depending on your definition of "alternate universe," instead of, say, Neverneverland, or Land of Fairy.

Interestingly, the original intention of the episode where Borg took Picard was to kill him off because Patrick Stewart wasn't happy with his role on the show and requested to be let out of it, but the writing on the episode where he was going to be written off convinced him that there could be SERIOUS writing/acting on the show and he stayed. And also, one of the original pitches for Worf as a character had him being the alien first officer ala Spock, but someone behind the scenes was against a Klingon in that role. So the timeline that Worf wound up in where Picard died in the Borg conflict and Worf was first officer feels like an homage to those concepts.

Gates McFadden switched from wigs to her own hair not long before these episodes. I believe that same is true for Marina Sirtis. I wish Cassie had seen Cadet Sito's previous episode with Cadet Crusher - the "back story." Sito was planned to return in season 8, but. . . I really, really wish Cassie had also seen "Rascals!" Young Jean-Luc was played by the same actor who had played his nephew in "Family." Also, she would've loved "Disaster."

I'm surprised that she doesn't now want to watch every single episode of TOS and TNG, even if on her own time. I mean, why wouldn't you? Don't you want to see all that you missed? This notion that she can't do that because her channel would fall apart is silly. I mean, just watch one or two episodes a week. It's not like there's a rush to see them all.

***SPOILERS*** I love how they tie in the animated Lower Decks series with that TNG episode. It was a shocking swerve in Mariner's backstory that she looked up to Sito in the Academy, and Sito's death is the reason why Mariner has never wanted to be promoted above Ensign. Whilst Mariner does love Starfleet, has a fascination with exploration and ship technology, and is fully willing to put her life on the line for others, she categorically does NOT want to be in a position where she has the responsibility of potentially sending someone else to their death. Staying an Ensign all those years kept her out of that position.

One of the earliest known instances of alternate worlds being addressed on television was in 1963, in an episode of The Twilight Zone titled "The Parallel." In this story, an astronaut returns to Earth to discover that his life is different in this reality than they were in the one he left. Shortly after this, an episode of Star Trek: The Original Series aired in 1967 called "Mirror Mirror." During this episode, Captain Kirk and his crew are replaced by their evil doppelgängers after a transporter malfunctions, and must battle to find their way back to their own version of reality. Some say the Wizard of OZ counts as a multiverse and is the first.

Every now and then, I like to be surprised, and although the obvious lineup between Riker and Diana was clearly written from day 1 and not entirely objectionable, it was also a little relentlessly predictable. Giving us an entirely new and unexpected angle on Worf and Diana was a seriously welcome breath of fresh air.

*Not to turn the blade in the wound but: It’s a bit normal you did not see Worf’s and Troi’s potential romance coming since you did not watch all the previous episodes; but had you, you would have seen a few hints here and there, including the episode that was referenced in this one, when Worf damaged his spine and he and Troi had a few small moments.* *”Lower Decks” also had a great link back to an episode you did not get to see when the incident ensign Sito was involved in at the academy was the subject of the episode… And even involved Wesley Crusher! (It’s a great episode which you should see!)… Plus, had you watched the other episodes, not only would you have met many other Bejorans: You would have met a very important one to this series* *I love Jonathan Frakes’ acting in “Pegasus”, especially in the scene where Picard grills Riker about the mutiny: Frakes body language is COMPLETELY different than his usual assured self. It’s really as though Frakes played it as who Riker was back when he was an ensign.* *_”MUTINYYYYYYYY!”_** 😂 Mutiny never sounded better!* 🤣👍👍 *”Lower Decks” is one of the most innovative episodes in ALL OF TELEVISION HISTORY: How often does any show break away from it’s main cast to flesh out characters that are usually overlooked so much that they are virtually invisible and not even an afterthought on the show!* *And now, all that is left is the ultimate finale… 😭😭😭 Too soon!*

Cassie, you've got to watch Deep Space Nine. It didn't get the love it deserved when it first aired, but watching it years later as an older man, I have to say its some of the finest Star Trek out there. It centers around the Bajoran/Cardassian conflict and has much more of an overall story arc than TNG. It deals with darker material as well... some of the best ethical conundrums I've ever seen on TV, and you'll fall in love with the characters. The character development of some of them is fantasic. Nog, for instance, has one of the best character arcs ever! And until you've witnessed it firsthand, you won't truly understand how epically Miles O'Brien is made to suffer in the show. 😅

@@fedord01 True, but I think Cassie is going to go back and watch some TNG episodes she missed on her own because she likes the show so much, and that could lead to her doing the same for DS9. However I also think Cassie doesn't care about a long connected story as much as we do, and won't connect to the DS9 characters as much as she did to TNG. So while I think she'll give DS9 a shot, I don't think she'll stick with it or put it on KZbin. Maybe she'll do a bit of it for Patreon though.
