Season 2 is a wild ride in the context of its ideas. And episode 1 really sets the tone: it uses a misogynist trope while trying to frame a pro-choice narrative during the golden age of Reagan era television. (Ronald Reagan was still the President of the United States, and televangelists like Pat Robertson were at the height of their political force. The fact that TNG, a show that is very L G B T + coded, got its start in an era like this is wild. And Season 2 makes several bold "culture wars" story decisions.)

I'm sure you've got someone providing the viewing order, and I hope it includes DS9 and Voyager. DS9 is arguably better and Voyager is in my view 90% as good as TNG. I didn't name my lever gun after Captain Katherine Janeway for no reason. I hope you will get to her in this journey.

There was a 1 year overlap where both shows aired (TNG season 7 & DS9 season 1) from late 1993 to spring 1994. Hint: there are a few familiar faces you will see on DS9.

I went to a Star Trek convention the summer after this season aired, and Marina Sirtis (Troi) and Jonathan Frakes (Riker) were the guests. Someone asked Sirtis how she felt about doing this episode and Troi having a kid, and she was like, well it was fun playing a mom but the giving birth part was really awkward and weird because she'd had no time to prepare how to do it, and she wasn't supposed to be in any pain or anything normal, so she wasn't sure what to do, and then they had her sit in this weird chair that was supposed to be a futuristic birthing chair, and she felt so embarrassed about doing the scene, felt like she was failing at it, and then she looked over and saw Frakes watching her, tears in his eyes, and his reaction reassured her she was getting it right. She talked about what a great costar he is to have on set, and of course Frakes smiled and changed the subject. They were so adorable together on stage. I remember that convention like it was yesterday. Hard to believe it's been over 30 years now! Where does the time go? X) You asked a lot of questions but I don't want to answer them and spoil things for you, so just watch. Loved your reactions! LOL'd when you exclaimed: Beard! The beard! Riker has a beard! :D :D :D

The Riker maneuver, the Riker lean, and the Riker stance are all connected to a real-life issue. Jonathan had injured his back years before signing on to TNG. The injury made it difficult to sit normally in a regular chair without a great deal of discomfort. The chairs on the show had low backs to them allowing him to easily sling his leg over which put him in a slightly more comfortable straddling position (he calls it the "Cocky Cowboy Maneuver" because it sounds more befitting of Riker's personality). You'll also notice him leaning when he is sitting for the same reason, it's just less painful, especially when you're standing up and sitting down a lot having to do multiple takes. The Riker stance is done for the same reason (where he always stands with one foot up on something, kind of like the Captain Morgan), thus not putting pressure solely on the center of the spine as opposed to standing straight or at attention. Sadly, people tend to make fun of other people's actions and behaviors when they don't bother to simply inquire as to why someone does that. Remember that the next time someone makes fun of the way Sylvester Stallone talks, there's a story behind that as well, he's actually a very intelligent individual, but people perceive him differently because of the way he talks. Sad world mad world. Anyway, loved the review, love you, take care and stay safe ❤️

I realise I'm in a very tiny minority, but one of the reasons Season 2 is my favourite is Pulaski; never did take to Crusher. This was the season I would have liked Home Soil to have been written for, as I believe it would have ended up being a much, stronger episode. It's still my favourite though; except for an episode that is still some ways away yet. But Pulaski is a major reason why I love Season 2 so much. TNG is still finding it's feet, with some of the lesser episodes still having the feel of Season 1, but this is one of the better episodes of the entire franchise (with the caveat that I have seen none of the newer shows ~ for reasons that would require spoilers). I think a lot of fans hated Pulaski not so much because she was different, but that she was not Crusher; amuses me because it was probably why I liked her :-) I remembered her from Star Trek & LA Law, but she also felt much more like McCoy and also the Doctor from the original Pilot, The Cage; whereas Crusher never gelled with me at all, Pulasli felt right immediately. kerk

To answer your question at 3:09, Whoopi Goldberg had been known for her movies like “The Color Purple”, “Jumpin’ Jack Flash”, and “Burglar”. But by 1988; going into TNG’s 2nd season, she was cast in a recurring role as Guinan. Because her role was a recurring role, it meant that she didn’t have to appear in every single episode. @@punkrockpollyanna7829 Thank you for the kind words. I can also recite every line of the TOS films word for word, including Captain’s logs etc. like…8130.3. That opens my favorite. But I’m really showing my insanity now! Lol! Love you all, and we love you Jen! Great job. BTW, in Where Silence Has Lease, the helmsman’s death is horrific and terrifying. Especially because he died in horror clasping his hands as if he was praying. So creepy!

Worf got a promotion to security so the uniform changes. Same with Geordi to Chief Engineer. Also there was a writers strike this season so that dips the quality a bunch and some scripts were reused from a Star trek show from the 70's that got scrapped. As for the Doctor she left the show this season over some disputes with a member of staff.

It's probably been said, but Whoopi Goldberg was already so famous that when she sent word through her agent that she wanted a part on TNG, the producers thought it was a joke at first. Why would a movie star want to be part of a syndicated sci-fi show on TV? The reason was, Uhura was a major influence to her growing up. In her words, "There's a black woman on TV, and she ain't no maid!" I do have to admit 13:45 kind of makes me choke up a bit nowadays... because it really, _really_ feels like when we hear about Wil Wheaton's years on the Enterprise, Jonathan Frakes was his primary male role model. As his dad was a verbally, emotionally, and physically abusive man who resented his son for being the breadwinner of the family. (It's also a little sad that Gates McFadden is not on the show at this time; she had a severe conflict with the showrunner for season 2 thus Doctor Pulaski was written into the show, but given that Wil's mom is almost legendarily one of the worst stage moms ever, to this day he calls Gates McFadden "Space Mom". And Anne Wheaton even calls Gates "Space Mom-in-law". No word if Ryan and Nolan Wheaton call her Space Grandma though...)

Ten Forward is one of the most popular places on the ship. It is located on deck 10 at the very front of the saucer section (thus "Ten Forward") and it affords one of the best views, which is why it makes for a good lounge/bar.

I like your editing, and your remarks about the episodes. About the colors of the uniforms of Worf and LaForge, Laforge became the Chief Engineer, and Worf is the head of security, instead of Tasha Yar. Guinen (Woopie Goldberg) is a new Bar tender. (sorry about the changes, yesterday I was a bit out and my English got a bit whacked...

Since Yar, previous head of security wore a gold/yellow uniforrm, when Worf took over that role he also changed to a Yellow uniform. Geordi also took on a new role as chief engineer which was indicated by a uniform change.

I particularly look forward to Star Trek Sundays cuz 1. I grew up with this shit and it’s nice to relive it again and 2. Jen is particularly astute when it comes to reactors. She catches nearly everything. 3. Her appreciation of music is amazing. I was in my teens when TNG was in its prime and I never particularly appreciated the music in this show. Now I’m realizing with Jens help TNG music is top tier. Again. Thank you for doing this. I hope the views are reflecting how good these reactions are.

When I saw this when it first came out I was really surprised they did not reference the immunity syndrome episode from the original series which was similar. Love worf “captain there is a peaceful vessel of our starboard bow, let’s blow them up. “ Funny in silence has lease. Wesley is there then he leaves, & ensign dispensable takes his place does & then Wesley comes back. 😂

10:02 Mark! Guinan, as the lounge hostess of "Ten Forward" named for its location within the starship, is wearing an outfit meant to resemble it! The hat represents the primary hull! But it is too abstract I guess. Las Vegas, Nevada casino tourists and cruise ship tourists, may have seen the gimmick, though. 🤷♂️

A tidbit I find funny about "the riker maneuver" is that he was hardly the first person on TV to do it. Yet everybody acts like he invented it. Also, you mentioned liking that Picard calls Riker "Number 1" is actually a callback from the original series. The originally unaired pilot episode had the Enterprise Captained by Pike, who called his first officer Number 1.That first officer stayed after the recasting as Nurse Chapel.

C3: Jonathan Frakes grew his beard in between Seasons 1 and 2, and, apparently, with Gene Roddenberry in attendance, the fans voted in favor of him keeping his beard! "Growing the Beard" is now an antonym for "Jumping the Shark"-i.e., a show gets good.

C2: Maurice Hurley, the then-Co-Executive Producer/showrunner who took over for Gene Roddenberry in the middle of Season 1 (and worked to use the S1 finale "The Neutral Zone" as a jumping off point for Season 2), fired Gates McFadden (Beverly Crusher) after Season 1.

As it's been mentioned by others, the uniform changes are due to changes in division. Red is for command, gold for operations, blue for sciences. This colour scheme remains in effect for the post TNG shows as well, giving clear visual indicators of peoples positions/abilities. Still, it was an obvious change from ToS where gold was command, red security and engineering...blue was still sciences. Uniforms changes aren't really a thing that gets highlighted or explained in any series, more something you have to find out about through lore books.
@gooseman_x8 ай бұрын
The reason why Geordi and Worf are in gold uniforms now is because they moved from Tactical (red) to Engineering/Operations (gold) - Worf as Chief of Security (Tasha’s old position), and Geordi as Chief Engineer (he’s now the new “Scotty”)

The second season of TNG gets off to an odd start. McFadden was fired by an executive producer she butted heads with during the first season over how her character was being written, Next , because of a writer's strike they had to pick an unused script from a Trek series that never got pass the planning stages in the late 70's s. A lot of fans never warmed up to the character of Pulaski. One, because replaced Crusher, and many thought she was too similar to McCoy from TOS.

Picard had been a Captain before and had been thru multiple crises during that time. When Starfleet needed an experienced Captain, they called him out of retirement- and he got the Enterprise.

Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg) is the ship's bartender. The ship's bar/restaurant is called "10-Forward"- it's at the very forward edge of the saucer section. It's the new set for season 2. We also see Lt.O'brien here in his new position as Transporter Chief. He'll come to have an absolutely huge impact on Trek. Watch my man Miles Edward O'Brien! Dr.Pulaski seems kinda like a jerk at first, but I really prefer her over Crusher. She's a heck of a lot smarter. Her questions and dialogue are really sharp and she's a bit adversarial with Picard on moral issues.

There's a reason Jonathan Frakes does that thing with his leg. It had some back pain and you'll see him propping hs foot on things throughout the series, and it was the best way to move off the chair. It became sort of a little thing for his character.

The change in unforms for Word and Geordi reflect their new jobs: Word as Security Chief and Geordi as the Chief Engineer. Blue is science, Gold is operations, and red is command (I think that is right).
