This is a beautiful character episode and you can really feel Picard's despair when Darren is on the planet, you can't get even a portion of this feeling from the new Trek, everything is bland and shallow. That's why I consider this episode as an A, it makes you feel with the character.

6:22 I lost it at the loud tapping sound. I realize I'm pissing in the wind here, but, speaking of the writers' total lack of musical knowledge, what are the odds that a flute produced by a civilization that died millennia ago would play in twelve-tone equal temperament? And then on top of that, be tuned to a standard Western pitch of A440, which was established in the 1920s? Current day Earth has more variation than this. I wonder what the interaction is like with the session musicians who provide the performances. Do the writers say stuff like, "We need the flute stuff or something here" with no further direction?

You can of course line up the piano to play with the flute's tuning. 12 ton system results in very nice ratiomal ratios in the pythagorean scale. Divisible by 2,3,4,6. Nice number.

I actually had fond memories of this episode. For some reason I’ve always enjoyed the episodes and movies that had some plot line with romantic overtones for Picard. I feel like he feels more lively in those moments. I know it’s a bit of a trope, but I also enjoy it tends to include Picard learning something from them. Anyway, you guys are brutal. :D

3:26 I gotta disagree entirely here. 1) we have seen that Picard has an deep interest in music. Innerlight he learned the Flute, then we had that cowboy holodeck intro where Picard keeps getting interupted while trying to play. 2) I'm a musician, and when you get good enough and really study a piece of music, you can tell when someone plays a different note. Given the format of a TV show and how they quickly show character development, It's perfectly fine to assume that Picard has been advancing his musical skills and has studied the piece that the lady was playing. 5:49 Actually my sister in law has one of these and it is not a toy. They do play the actual piano notes. Currently the technology for these pianos is only good for practicing on. But with more miniaturization I'm sure in the future they could make one that you can perform on. ....but the prop in the show is a bit laughable. lol, gotta use some 'imagination' on this one. 6:22 LOL!! 7:46 Lol!! I always enjoyed this episode.

F minor 7 = F Ab C Eb D diminished = F Ab B D (D half dimished is even closer with C instead of B) So they're pretty similar. I don't know the actual music their talking about, maybe I'll rewatch the episode. It's not outlandish to alter things like that as a matter of style, though rare. So listeners familiar with the music get little easter eggs every now and again. The variety in performance, interpretation and expression of pieces is one of my favorite parts about classical music. And your version of the piece was far superior, I am certain. Bravo!

If the tonal centre is Eb, then substituting a diminished D for an F minor is perfectly legitimate and would be a clearly audible and interesting choice that would change the harmony in a trio. It creates a more romantic and less dissonant feel before resolving to the tonic. One could even argue that this is an entirely appropriate musical choice for Daren given both her character and her style of playing.

@Lunaril
@Lunaril Жыл бұрын
She came from a starbase, where her experience is based on a traditional terran model of time of day. She would have to adjust to ship time. The baron sweep would be like a fog of baron passing harmlessly, and picking up radiation fragments in the background that had been building up due to starship travel. It would pass and the particle would get carried away, leaving no trace behind, due to the filtration systems onboard ship. Ship duty rosters, include junior officers who fulfill administrative or department functions. Typically you would run everything up the chain, not walk up to your CO or XO and interact like that; However, in Naval tradition, it is common for Fleet or Flag officers would have junior assistants and such. It's possible that as her role, in which case she would update the XO.

What I find impressive: those actors - the cello player and Spiner - can easily imitate vibrato, but (Spiner) not keep their bow straight. I find vibrato extremely hard to practice, especially "dry" (without bowing). Bowing in the correct spots seems much easier to me. And those actors can't bow straight, but can pull off maybe not a completely realistically looking vibrato, but at least continuous arm shaking while play-acting?

I think you might be right that nobody should expect to have heard of all the flutes in the known galaxy, even if you are an amateur musician. But the comment about it being insufferable to expect herself to know every planet, is not warranted, as she is, on the Federation’s flagship, the department head of *stellar cartography,* which literally means mapping the universe (stars). That’s her job-one that she’s very passionate about, and has such a demonstrated competence in, that the Federation’s flagship will-as you have noted-shut down (systems on) the entire ship for her. I think it’s well within her purview -as it is exactly her purview- to know about all the charted planets in the known universe. In fact she’s probably the only person on the ship who can expect herself to do this.😅

I like this episode for the music and that one off scene inside the ships crawl ways sending sound echoing all through the ship. I thought they got Aussie Wendy Hughes because she could play Piano but apparently she cant?? so all her scenes were dubbed and she has shorter fatter fingers than the close ups of a pro playing which is bit obvious. Picard able to hear any inversions or diff notes played would require a very tuned and experienced ear and he says hes only amateur yet he can improvise a solo around the chords and keep the melody well and she says he much better than he thinks! Other Picard "love" episodes, but this one is way more personal and intense and certainly when he has to order her to stay with a raging plasma fire coming straight at them shows the terrible decisions he has to make and imagine if he was married to her for 20 years and had to order her to stay down on the planet mins from death or harm.. A and B plots are usually bit hit and miss but the two directly relate and come to a head with possible lethal consequences to not just a fellow office but someone he deeply cares for even if just a short time.

BUT thanks to this channel, you show close up of the "prop" one that has extra keys between the sharps?? like there gaps between the numbers on the periodic table too?? Why did they make it with wrong white keys?? and the poor pro musician girls hands had to play on this thing for the close ups!! Also 3 octaves isnt enough for bass and enough treble so? hmm still one of my fav stories, bit more bottle show with small planet set. funny even with the old series and TNG and others, ship board shows are cheap but end up usually the best stories?

I really did not like this episode, for many of the reasons you mentioned. She's playing the part too stiff to be a love interest for Picard and the whole relationship is rushed. If you want to pay-off a romance plot like this, you stretch it out as a B or C plot over several episodes and find a more organic way to put her in danger. She's becomes super important to him in a short span, then they break up and she's never seen again, so what is learned from this episode? That Picard shouldn't date subordinates? Didn't we already know that, like what is this episode even? Another episode without a B plot to break up the monotony and the A plot is terrible. At least Stewart got another romance angle, which he always craved for his character. D+

(Sigh) Music is both science and rhetoric. I can't tell you how many musically untalented scientists I've witnessed fail ear training exams, really easy ones. Darren's hand positions would indeed cause pain in the wrists and arms. The keyboard is pretty awful but, as often happens with Star Trek, there is now a real 88 key "roll it out" keyboard. No pedal access that i know of unless you can hook a sustain pedal up to it, but hey, if you need to practice Bach 2 part inventions it could be pretty effective. I actually like the arrangement of the folk tune they did. Frere Jaques was pretty nice too. She's supposed to be a concert pianist, and he is supposed to be an amateur with no experience playing chamber music, so given those facts she isn't all that condescending. She's surprised by how moving his playing is once he drops Brandeburg 3, which is supposed to be a strings and harpsichord only piece. Brandenburg 4 actually calls for recorders, and would have been a better choice. Branenburg 5 (a work I've conducted a number of times) calls for transverse flute and would have been the best choice. Recorder doubling the theme an octave higher sounds dreadful, perhaps on purpose. I'm a professional classical composer and musician. These little musical things that seem to annoy you guys don't really bother me. Quite frankly your pompous, snarky little laughs and snotty comments bother me a lot more. It just goes to show you that clit bait on big topics really does drive views. I'm done with yours after this one.
