Yes; In 1994 at the Star Trek Convention here in Fresno, James Doohan was the featured actor. At one point he took questions from the audience, so I asked him which of the TOS episodes was his favorite, His reply was: "The Doomsday Machine. It was the episode where I felt like I actually done something for a change.....It started my reputation as a Miracle Worker..." James Doohan from what I saw was a very friendly, and congenial actor. A fine man who I will always miss. Mike in Fresno, Ca.

I went to a marathon Star Trek movie watch that happened, rather unfortunately, just after the death of Gene Roddenberry. They dedicated the night and morning performances to him. The showing was at the cinema where my ex husband worked and I got talking to a nurse from Paisley who asked me what I thought of Scotty's accent. I said that at best it was a bit west coast, she said she thought the same. She told me that at a convention she attended she had said so to James Doohan and he laughed because he thought it was a north eastern accent.

Wow, a convention in 1994. Who would've thought. I went to one in NYC, maybe 1975. Way cool.

Re: At the time don’t think so. In fact, he even said gave half ass effort. But think got enough positive feedback from fans over the years before his death that he realized he had given one of (if not greatest) guest performances on TOS. Agree?

When I think of the episode "Relics" from TNG, then I think of this episode. There is no way Scotty exaggerated his repair times. He truly was a miracle worker with starships. He helped get the impulse drive wired through the warp drive controls. Kept the impulse drive working on the Constellation to the point it had shields, and phasers. On top of all that, he kept the transporter working on the Enterprise. If anything this episode was Soctty's crowning glory.

Get my ship outta there! My mother-in-law's approaching! I don't recognize you. Mr. Spock! On my orders as Captain of the Enterprise. Commadore, you're relieved of command. And in the name of mothers-in-law. Vulcans never bluff. No. I don't suppose they do. 'Cause you've never been married. Gentlemen. I suggest you beam me aboard. To kill your mother-in-law? Mr. Scott. Mr. Scott. Try inverse divorcing. Bridge! We got him through! We've saved the husband! Welcome aboard single husband. "Sigh" says Captain ex-husband. And no alimony! Hallelujah! Contact Star-fleet. Tell'em Decker was a prick. Nearly forced to stay married to that slut of his daughter. Finally free. Yessir Captain. Dah. Dah da da daaannhh! Created by Gene Roddenberry...

I liked the fact that the VFX team replicated the "wobble" of the Constellation model. A by product of a hastily constructed AMT plastic model on an improvised stand, in the original. But it gave the feel of a crippled ship, barely under control.

@OpenMawProductions11 жыл бұрын
Tom Evans Well, above and beyond that. Decker wasn't totally wrong. He was thinking of the greater Federation in trying to pursue the DM. Even if it was foolhardy and coming from desperation/emotion over the loss of his crew. Decker was not just a typical "Crazy brass" of the week. He had some depth.
@SovereignStatesman9 жыл бұрын

+OpenMawProductions Most TOS plots had depth, vs. everything that came afterward. That's the thing about TOS, it was too deep for the average audience.
@tryarunm6 жыл бұрын
I disagree. Decker had no depth, at least not at that time. He was a basket case. Considering his rank he ought to have been on the brains trust, using his superior rank to insist on piloting a bomb-laden, self-destructing Constellation into the DM. His futile attack on the DM and his pointless, wasteful suicide reveal that he was long past sanity.

It wasn't the special effects, original or remastered, that made this episode- it was Norman Spinrad's script; the way everyone [including William Windom] interpreted it, and Sol Kaplan's nail-biting score. Don't get me started on an old 'Space Opera' style concept I had for Star Trek decades ago. BUT That would have ben epic wouldn;t it? Later in ST:TNG era... Voyager comes across a damaged Borg cube, (not the weak Species 54389 whatever) concept) which is where they take on board 7 of 9 eventually. Find it has been damaged in an attack against a DoomsDay machine, where they discover that the one in ST:TOS was a seriously damaged version under going self-repair. This machine (and its ilk) being an enemy of the Borg (but, their own long stime systemic damage, the Borg can not determine why, they just are) Further investigation, and working together, data is established... the machines are out to simply destroy life.. all life.. any form of entire,, and/or hybrid life forms. And a translated name for the machine is found, just before it is destroyed as it communicates and identifies itself... "Only Good-life will be temporarily accepted. All other will be destopryed without fail. We are the... BERSERKER" [ And if it was done in tradition TOP/TOS style, I suspect Fred wouldn;'t mind, just as Blish didn;t mind concerning his MArtian FlatCats]

@jolly704 Because their photon torpedoes aren't working and the phasers aren't area affect. Earlier in the episode they mention their antimatter has been "deactivated" which mean no warp drive and no torpedoes.

I agree with the moral of this clip. Bugles are indeed quite delicious.

Thanks for posting this. I enjoyed it. As I understood it, the doomsday machine is a metaphor for the (then ongoing) nuclear arms race.
