My new video with Scotty's best of! • Chief Engineer Montgom...
It's a scene from the famous episode "The trouble with Tribbles". After a bar-fight with Klingons Kirk is a bit angry and wants to know who started it. Of course, Scotty :) I love this conversation and the music in the background.
I do not own this, I do not profit from this video, all rights reserved, Paramount stuff etc.
Subtitles thanks to Chakoteya.net

As I recall, Shat’s background was as a theater player (alongside Christopher Plummer, no less!), which I could believe could involve aping your expressions and mannerisms somewhat so that people far back from the stage could make out what was going on. Such exaggeration would be considered overacting by tv and movie standards.

What I've always loved about this scene is how every man in that lineup either knew or had a good idea of who started the fight. But not a single one said a word against Mr. Scott. Even after losing shore leave, even after being confined to quarters. And the crew is never depicted as having an antagonist relationship with Kirk. He's no Captain Bligh that they had to form a united front against. Even under a captain generally regarded as good and fair, no man was willing to sell Scott out for their own benefit.

Helps that they all knew the punishments would be *Relatively* minor. Klingon infested station would be a killjoy and a pissing contest the whole way through. I'd say a fair number of them wouldn't mind catching up on reading anyway.

It's one of my favorite Trek scenes too, because it drives home the intense camaraderie all the crew shared, from Kirk and the bridge officers on down. Roddenberry showed how a diverse group of people could act as a team, a family, to support each other and accomplish truly amazing things.

Better still, while Kirk was clearly taking a hit to his ego when Scotty didn't defend his honor, but the Enterprise's honor... he absolutely understood and agreed, you don't insult the Enterprise and get away with it. Basically a case of "understandable, but rules are rules so technically I have to punish you". Also, the entire crew refusing to sell out Scotty, even to Kirk who is fair and understanding, is awesome. The crew has loyalty on every level, and they'd rather all be punished in solidarity than snitch on one of their own. Great scene.

I love this scene from "The Trouble with Tribbles." The disciplinary action Kirk gives Scotty (being restricted to quarters) made the engineer jump for joy because he could read his technical journals. He has been a positive influence for so many in the technical fields inspiring them to excellence. Regarded as one of the best episodes, Kirk looks tired and pensive all through, but he never is actually dropping the ball. He starts to perk up just when needed; masterful writing and acting having the Captain know when to show his authority or just relax and go with the flow. Interesting comment made on the making of Hunt for Red October, when they got to ride on a US submarine for the making. The captain was very relaxed and just oozed authority and when orders had to be given, he gave them calmly and they noted hes the sort of guy you would follow into hell and not question him. Shatner portrays kirk as both a strong high endurance leader and also accessible but ready for a bit of biffo when needed.

It was always impressive that the writers and Shatner could pull off allowing Kirk to be a little vulnerable at times. This scene allows Kirk to be a little insulted that Scotty thought of the ship first rather than Kirk. But Kirk never needs to resort to being mad and secretly finds the whole thing humorous. All the while he remains comfortable and in absolute control of himself and his command. Lots of subtle layers Shatner displays masterfully in this scene.

Well said as well Jaim Haas. Shatner as Kirk was a master at simultaneously mixing multiple layers of personality in subtle degrees as the scenes called for. In Balance of Terror, for example, the last scene where Kirk consoles the young lady who lost her fiance during the battle, he is able to be consoling and nurturing while fully displaying his sense of command, authority and overall just being a really cool guy. Spock - Well, it was Mr. Scott who performed the actual engineering." Kirk - "Mr. Scott, where..are...the tribbles?" Scott - "I used the transporter Captain." Kirk - "You used the transporter." Scott - "Aye". Kirk - "Well where did you transport them to?" (McCoy, Spock and McCoy look around aimlessly) Scott you didn't transport them into space did you?" Scott - "Captain Kirk, that'll be inhuman." Kirk- "Well where are they?" Scott - "I gave'em a very good home sir." Kirk - "WHERE?!? Scott - "I gave'em to the Klingons sir." Kirk -(whispers) "You gave them to the Klingons?" Scott - "Aye sir. Before they went into warp I transported the whole kit and caboodle into their engine room, where they'd be no tribble at all."

I’ve probably seen this episode at least a few dozen times over the years. But this scene still cracks me up every time. This was a classic example of the pride and love Scotty had for his ship. He wouldn’t fight the klingons because the insulted his captain. But he beat the hell out of them because they insulted his ship. He probably would have fought all of them even if he was all alone and didn’t have any of his crewmates to back him up. Scotty may have been able to ignore insults about other things. But he wouldn’t listen to one word of anyone disrespecting his ship. Kirk’s reputation as a great captain wouldn’t be anywhere near what it was if he didn’t have Scotty working his magic with the ship. RIP James Doohan. The best engineer ever.

Another really good Scott moment is when he tells the diplomat he won't lower the screens....When Scott tells u to go F yourself it's a good day.

Many years on, and I still remember that scene almost word for word - and can quote Scotty complete with the accent. Out in western Canada, we were all very proud of Jimmy Doohan, who was not only from Vancouver, B.C., but had landed in the first wave of Canadian troops to hit Juno Beach on D-Day, being wounded six (if memory is correct) times by machine gun fire while assaulting the German strong points. He was taken to hospital (one of the lucky survivors of that first wave) and afterwards was given a medical discharge by the Canadian Army. Which he wasn't having, so he turned around and volunteered to join the Royal Canadian Air Force, where the he became a pilot and flew as an artillery spotter for the rest of WWII. So Scotty's history demonstrated that he really had gone out and stood in harms' way voluntarily and more than once. Just being a survivor of the first wave to land on Juno Beach was kind of extraordinary. Volunteering as a pilot in the RCAF was another. His persona as being a bit of a "bad a**" was not entirely fiction!

Well, Kirk's a big boy, he can fight for himself. The Enterprise, however, is Scotty's lady.
