Back in the 90’s when the first DS9 Rio Grand Runabout model came out. I decided I would build it with as complete an interior with lights that I could build. I had never done anything like it before nor ever saw anything like it at the time, like I said it was 1993 so no LED strips. I ended up using red, blue, yellow and white mini Christmas lights and thin wire from Radio Shack for the interior and warp nacelles and powered them with a 12volt transformer from a train power pack. I spent hours drawing from watching VHS recordings from the show and luckily the STNG episode Timescape the only time the rear compartment was ever shown (which was nuts, I never understood why they didn’t use it on DS9?) Scratch built the entire cockpit seats, consoles, transporter pad and the rear with the big table and chairs, the one console Data sat at , a long sofa and end tables along the long back windows and four crew bunks with little plastic curtains. Lighted squares in the roof panels and hand painted everything using colored markers and pencils to make the consoles. In the end it came out amazing considering my limitations. Took it to a model show in Utica ny where I was stationed in the USAF at the time and got lots of compliments and a couple of “you Air Force guys are nuts” declarations. I guess we all are a little, and proud of it!

Wonder how many notice that you even got Lt Uhura’s lovely leg color with that memorable sheen ! Only wish you could adjust your camera to pick up the lighted screens without washing out. Maybe if you turn down the gain or contrast in another short video? If you are using a cellphone maybe an actual digital camera or webcam? I believe it would have been about 1969 that I purchased a similar kit (I think AMT but could be wrong). The kit was considerably smaller, but if memory serves, the parts were simply smaller variants of what you had to work with. I stand in awe of your final results...granted mine had no lighting, but every detail in yours was given meticulous attention, something 14 year old me would have had little patience for. Of course 14 year old me would have been blown away by a tiny flat panel display, fibre optics, and LED light strips, all of which would have felt decidedly 23rd century appropriate. Live long and prosper.

Wow!!! That is absolutely amazing! I just bought a new bridge model (this one) after building 2 or 3 as a kid, I thought I just might be able to do a better job this time so I watched your video for hints. This is waaaay above my electrical wiring abilities, I am completely blown away. Now that I have placed you at modeling godhood, I have 2 questions/critiques from how it appears on screen in this video: 1) the lights (awesome as they are) *appear* to be very bright, maybe a bit too bright? 2) the video screen (great idea) seems awfully blue, and perhaps the images need to be cropped with a larger black border/ smaller images to fit the screen size better. There's no way I could have ever done this good but perhaps those two things can be "fixed" if they are even this way in real life, or the input may be useful on your next project. I promise I mean absolutely no offense whatsoever and hope not is taken wrong. Thank you so much for sharing!!!!

This looks great! I built one when i was a kid, it didn't have all the side panels though. I was wondering if you're going to add the lights above the turbolift doors?
@Redfern42 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, when the kit was re-released a few years ago, they updated several aspects. They added the port side stations, parts to create several more crew and far, far more accurate decals. Too bad they couldn't make a more accurate turboshaft door and view screen panel. The door is too large and too shallow while the view screen section has the opposite problem, deep deep and too small. That that would have required all new molds for not only those parts but also the floor plates upon which they mount. It was easier to cast the port stations. Given Fantastic Plastic added details like the proper armrests to the captain's chair, I'm kinda' surprised he didn't apply strips of sheet styrene to build an edge or "frame" around the door. It would still be too shallow, but the door would be closer to its proper size.

I like the starfield effect for the view screen but too bad the stars move so quickly. I also like how it makes a 360 degree bridge now. When I built this in the mid to late 70's I think 3 of the pie shapes were not included. And oddly enough what was included was the side of the bridge you didn't see most of the time. The engineering part next to the turbo lift wasn't included.
