I think Chang's reaction was an act- he must've deliberately used the word 'breathing room' to get that exact response from Kirk, thus playing into what exactly Chang wants- perpetual hostilities between the Klingons & the Federation. Remember that Chang is an extremely skilled tactician that is always 4 steps ahead of everyone while also knows how to cover his tracks!

@@trespire I for one think Chang's ostensible compliments towards Kirk has 2 meanings. On one hand Chang was trying to 'lovebomb' Kirk with flattery so to catch him off guard or even let it down, but at the same Chang is implying "You formidable adversary, so we finally meet" and Kirk probably sniffed that out and felt uneasy to reply(note how obtuse Kerla was in contrast). This is especially true in the context of the subsequent dinner in which Chang's provocations were all phrased as ostensible sympathy for Kirk's military ego, but are actually meant to bait Kirk to say the wrong things in front of Gorkon & co, thus undermining the icebreaking(which was going very well right up to that). Gorkon, however was much more determined and sincere in making peace with Kirk and the Federation, which could probably be why Chang chose to have Gorkon assasinated right after the dinner- he might've hoped to dissuade Gorkon one last time from pursuing peace with the Federation, but when the latter persisted Chang proceeded with his original plan and eliminated Gorkon while framing Kirk as the culprit!

One thing I've noticed often is that for the brashness and crudity that Klingons will display, it always seems to be a means of testing those around them and will politely respect the customs of their hosts. While they Klingons were unfamiliar with napkin rings (and napkins in general), they all keenly took the lead of the Federation officers by placing the napkins in their laps. Similarly, when Worf's brother was aboard the Enterprise and Picard offered him caviar, he sneered at it in disgust until Picard said it was a rare delicacy and he was sharing his own private stash. Then, without hesitation he took a sample and never once did or said anything negative about it. Klingons definitely have their own ways of doing things, but they are exceedingly polite in their own way.
