You needed a 34 more seconds on the end of the clip -- Mr. Scot's quote, "Aye Sir... The more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain..." is the BEST takeaway from this entire sequence! (I have used it multiple times in various strategy meetings and, the beauty of it is, the older that quote gets, the more the young bucks tend to think it "original" with me ;-) And, FWIW, I always heard it as "over-tech" the plumbing... ) But, if you don't end the clip at Kirk's "Best speed to Genesis!" command, you also miss Scotty's handoff, "Here Doctor, souvenirs from one surgeon to another... I took them out of her main transwarp computer drive..." and McCoy's Complaint about not being in on the plan -- which is followed by Kirk's riposte, "That's what you get for missing staff meetings, Doctor..." as well as Kirk's summation, "Gentlemen, your work today has been outstanding... I intend to recommend you all for promotion... in whatever fleet we end up serving..." -- which ain't bad either!

As she cleared the doors leading from her gilded cage, she tossed a wink at her would-be successor who was making haste to follow. The feel of the stars on her hull felt so good she found herself momentarily forgetting the stakes at hand. Spreading her wings and soaring under the station in her ocean of stars once again was a moment too good to ignore. A fleeting moment it would be as her young headstrong sister gave chase, growling all the while to stay and accept that her time was over. Despite the risks, the dangers, the unknowns, the weariness in her old bones and the fresh bruises on her skin, she was going to bring her captain home, and no one was going to stop her. She felt a measure of her old youthful bravado returning, "Probably because Jim is here," she mused, he always brought this out in her. Casting a glance over her shoulder at her now snarling pursuer, she decided that someone needed a lesson in humility. With a dazzling grin she let the Excelsior have it. There was a popular book some years ago, perhaps you remember it. "Everything I Need To Know I Learned in Kindergarten." I'm thinking about writing a similar book, called "Everything I Need To Know I Learned From Star Trek." I'm 60+, been a Trufan of Star Trek since Day One back in 1966. But seriously, there's a wealth of life lessons in the entire universe of Star Trek, from TOS, through TNG, and DS9, and VOY, and all the movies. Michael Berman did a fine job of carrying on Rodenberry's vision. And as far as that Chris Pine stuff - yeah no thanks. Fine action movies, but it's not Star Trek. And that's not Kirk. At all. Which, in the end I suppose, is as it should be. Can't do Kirk, don't even try. Maybe that's what they were going for.

This movie is truly underrated. The story, the music ( rest is peace James, we miss you) the OG crew. All of it was epic. Definitely a favorite from my childhood.

I saw the first episode of Star Trek when it first aired, I was spellbound. for me it meant that the human race had managed to get past the race problems, the politicians, and as a whole....survived .

This movie looks good today because of all the crap they have released lately. But it is pretty bad compared to numbers 2, 4, 6, and 8.

This is the first movie I took my wife to when we were dating. I loved the ending,"the needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many".

I think people forget that Christopher Lloyd was the Klingon commander in this. And Robin Curtis was great, but I wonder how Kirstie Alley would've done had she stayed on as Saavick.

I love how Kirk looks at Sulu, like he's both in awe and a little unnerved.

This is great cinema where everything comes together. You can't separate the soundtrack from the movie. Whenever I hear the score I can visualize the whole scene in my mind.

THE StarTrek scene of scenes! Nothing before or after in any of the iterations has ever come close to this in capturing the magic and the chemistry between the characters that was StarTrek! Live long, and prosper!

I love how none of them even hesitated. Compared to some of the stuff they've done stealing the Enterprise was probably child's play.

This moment tells you everything. Competence. Honor. Loyalty. Duty. The only thing you don't see is Spock, but you know that they are all working toward someone/something that MUST be saved, at all costs. Even if you don't know the characters, the show, the movies, you get it all right here.

I met James Doohan in Redmond at a video rental store. He lived nearby. "Nice to meet you. Love your work. What are you in the mood for tonight?" We talked movies in general for a few minutes as we made our selections. Nice guy.
