I always thought it was weird that they got all the rights to use the names, characters, even got all the original voice actors (except Jeri Ryan until they patched her in after the fact)... but they couldn't use Jay Chattaway's original title theme.

@@AdmiralKarelia rights for comedians, photographers, composers, musicians etc. are usually dealt with completely separately with different contracts and legal representatives. Depending on the way the initial contract was made it’s very possible that getting only the theme song and rights from the orchestra would have cost the same budget as getting the whole cast for their voice + recordings. In which case it makes little financial sense vs. just redoing a similar theme by a cheaper (less well known but quite talented!) composer working on a MIDI synthetiser!
