I've seen several comments that take issue with the fact that the Cylon Basestars manage to hang in there in the fight for longer than might otherwise be expected, given that they have no kind of energy shielding the way that Federation starships do, and given the power of Federation phasers, photon and quantum torpedoes. My own thought on that is that both Cylon defense systems (as well as Galactica) followed a different defense doctrine and technology. Perhaps using highly advanced materials' technology (possibly even more advanced than that of the Federation) in order to fabricate hull plating that serves as a more robust and effective defense system than might otherwise be possible with standard materials like Federation duranium and tritanium. They still can't go toe-to-toe for long in a sustained firefight with Starfleet's ships of the line, and their point-defense cannons can't seem to intercept torpedoes in order to stop them, but the hulls themselves could take quite a pounding for a bit longer. And then of course there's the fact that the Cylon cannons do next to no damage against starship shields. Only one Starfleet vessel sustained any damage, and it simply withdrew to let the others finish the job.

Thank you, my thoughts were quite similar, I thought they could've used some kind of a ablative armour which is very strong, we can see it in final episode of Voyager

@@EnterprisezJ My very thought, indeed. As I mused even further, another system came to mind which might be within the grasp of BSG-universe tech: Structural integrity fields. To strengthen the superstructure of their ships, Federation vessels transmit energy throughout the hull fabric and load-bearing members within the vessel. A system using similar principles might also give the Cylons (or Galactica) more resilience during heavy bombardment. Ever since I saw this video about 5-6 years ago (and DUDE! Did it blow my hair back? Just you believe it!) I've asked myself the question: Could the Cylons ever be a near-peer threat to Starfleet and the Federation? It would seem unlikely, given the limited scope of Cylon forces and the amount of territory that they claim (presumably for the purposes of resource extraction and utilization, though they never seemed to me to have social, ideological, or political motivations for territorial expansion, apart from wanting to wipe out humanity and therefore needing the means with which to do that). Yet, given that Cylons have shown at times (more in the reboot than in the OG series) remarkable adaptability, they might could construct a fleet (in a crash program of development) that could give Starfleet a run for it's money. However, this poses an even more fundamental question. Upon contact with the Federation (and the realization that both they and the 12 human colonies of Kobol are little more than relatively minor players in a vast galactic menagerie of federated states, empires, and various other aligned and non-aligned powers), in what way would the Cylon's singular objective (to whit; obliterating humankind) be altered by such a revelation? Yeah, this is gonna keep me awake now... (lol)

@@keiththorpe9571 Well, it depends. The federation pre-dominion where retofited ships, medical and science vessels a plenty, and more focused on exploration that in real combat. Cylons will need to forge some galactic alliances on their own, but that's possible with people like cardassians, romulans, orions or even ferengi around. However in a post-dominion war, stuff changes a lot. Starfleet has ships that use the defiant as a model, the soverign class, which is pretty much the closest thing Starfleet has to a battlecruiser, and ships like the Akira class, more focused to combat. Plus, more fresh war tactics, war veteran officers and crews, and more combat readiness. In that case a threat like the Cylon will be not ignored. And with a change in politics that means the dominion war, no one will ever make an alliance against the federation. However, the federation will never go to war when they can do diplomacy, and the cylon will pretty much be forced by the circumstances to sitting in a table with a humanity that's a founder of a several thousands planet alliance with a vast, much more advance fleet. And once the cylons are there, you send the Enterprise-E (if it's post-dominion) and, between Piccard charm, Data as basically a demonstration of tolerance towards androids and robots by the federation, and Riker probably banging a cylon (that's a joke XD) the cylons will end up becoming a part of the federation in a few years, probably. And the human refugees will end up in Trek's Earth, which will be the paradise they were looking for.

How it would have gone: Data: "We have arrived at the co-ordinates indicated by the archelogical data obtained from the artefact Captain" Picard: "Slow to half impulse, and begin full sensor sweep" Worf: "Captain, I detect a large number of space vessels in the vicinty. There also appears to be a substantial quantity of metallic debris and radiation" Picard: "Scan the spacecraft - I want to know what happened here" Worf: "Aye Captain. (pause). The ships appear quite primitive Captain. No shields; crude natural alloy contruction; fusion power. I am detecting large numbers of life-forms aboard - human!" Riker: "As we suspected. At least the Prime Directive won't apply" Worf: "Many of the ships appear to have been adapted to carry passengers, sir. Some are little more than bulk cargo carriers" Picard: "A refugee fleet, perhaps?" Riker: "If so, whatever they were running from might have caught up with them" Worf: "Captain! One of the human ships is under attack! Small craft - fighters of some kind!" Approximately the same level of technlogy as the other craft - primitive laser weaponry" Picard: "Hail them, Mr Worf. Warn them off." Worf: "Aye Sir. No response. Strange - the fighters register no life forms. Nothing other than some sort of computer system control. Very primitive, pre-Duotronic era" Picard: "Warn them again - and lock phasers" Worf: "Still no reponse. One of the human vessels is destroyed, sir. No survivors. The fighters have opened fire on us, Captain. Shields register virtually no impact" Picard: "Very well, Mr Worf. Set phasers to minimum power and fire. Let's show them we've got teeth - but not how sharp" Worf: "Fighters destroyed, sir. Receiving a hail from the human ships - they are using what I believe was known as 'radio'. They ask if we are from something called the thirteenth colony. They also warn us that something they call 'the Cylons' has several 'base stars" nearby" Riker: "Cylons? What the devil are they? Widen the scan area, Mr Worf" Worf: "Aye sir. Detecting several large vessels - apparently designed as carriers for the fighters. Heavily armed and armoured by their standards - they represent no threat to us, however. They are moving towards the human ships, apparently intending to attack" Picard:"Life signs aboard the - I suppose base stars is as good a label as any" Worf: "None sir. Only more of the computer complexes and what seem to be some form of robots" Picard: "Very well. It appears we must engage these 'Cylons'. Phasers and photon torpedoes at your discretion, Mr Worf. Hit them hard enough to try to make them retreat, but if necessary destroy them" Worf: "Sir, two base-stars are destroyed. The largest appears to be a command ship of some kind. It has retreated - very early warp-drive or equivalent" Picard: "Very well. Prepare to extend our warpfield around the human ships - lets get these people home"

Love this depiction. Probably the single best representation of what Star Trek ships are said to be able to do in a battle, plus the most accurate showing of the spirit of WHY Star Trek ships go into battle. Also, the only time we have seen what impulse engines as shown in ST are capable of. Its not a straight thrust powered propulsion per the description. Its a low grade subspace field that the ship basically coasts on to make its mass less than standard, therefore very maneuverable. There is thrust from the exhausts for added speed and the thrusters for added turn. You see the ships bobbing and weaving, rocking back and forth and sharp bank turns...all indicative of evasive maneuvers. So cool!

Don't forget Inertial Dampners-they still pull more Gs than the crew can handle during those moves, which is what the dampners smooth out. All combined, you get a ship that is as big as a goddamn town and able to pull over a dozen gs in a turn. Absolutely incredible.

The Federation's ships actually have their deflector shields (a detail that surprisingly many people forget) and they don't remain stationary through the battle, instead maneuvering constantly and taking maximum advantage of their weapon coverage. Good job.

@ricwalker6600
@ricwalker6600 2 жыл бұрын
@@ravenmoon5111 i disagree. yes, the shields would make them invulnerable from the base stars plasma/laser weapons, but we are talking several yards thick hull armor plating. There is no way Phasers would cut/melt through this quick leaving the torpedoes as the main source of damage and all Star Trek series are very inconsistent about how much damage they actually could do. So it would not be quick. Same goes for a Battlestars armored hull. so the Base Stars weapons are high powered to work their way through the thick hull. so if the base star gets in hits, they have punch. the only question is, how many they could actually land against the agile federation ship. and anything that goes through the shield would do extreme damage, because fed ships have paper hulls compared to literally any other si-fy fandom. And this was the original series base star. the reboot first cylon war base star (same design but conventional weapons) could withstand several rocket and torbedo barrages, heck they could sometimes eat even a nuke to the face and survive it heavily damaged. those reboot base stars could really trouble a Federation ship. because shields do defend against conventional weapons but far less effective than against energy weapons. so getting hit by conventional weapons and missiles really would mean more trouble. i would like to see that in a video.
@svenschwingel8632
@svenschwingel8632 2 жыл бұрын
@@ricwalker6600 in Trek lore, the shields also protect against kinetic damage. Hell, even the navigation deflector does that because it is necessary for warp travel. Bullets won't do a thing against tech from trek lore. And neither would nukes. In space, nukes don't really detonate (because there is not enough matter to be moved around) but rather convert their yield into radiation. Which is what shields also protect against, especially since more than 50% of the radiation would be directed away from the impact area upon detonation because nukes aren't exactly shaped charges.

Ten years later and it still looks and sounds absolutely AMAZING! This is one of the all-time great space battles videos. I know that the FedShips were nerfed to make it interesting because a single, well-placed volley of Quantum Torpedoes would blow the central connection of any Cylon BaseStar. They weren't designed to withstand antimatter-based weaponry. The original BattleStars were armed with plasma bolt launchers (similar to Star Wars Turbolasers) and missiles (like Spatial Torpedoes from Ennterprise). Their weapons tech was even weaker than that in the reboot because all they had in that series were ballistic weapons. Against a torpedo that holds 1kg of deuterieum and 1kg of antideuterium, each suspended in an 11-dimensional membrane and released upon each other at the optimal moment, no Cylon BaseStar stood a chance.

I said this because your work is objectively superior to even PIXAR. Perhaps the Magellan getting too cocky and rushing in-only to be hit with enough nukes to actually do damage to its shields (and down them) through sheer weight of fire, and have it get covered by one of the capital ships (Big Es) while the shields regenerate and it potshots their centers of mass with photons. Something like that would've been cool. Because, though BSG's nukes are really not that strong compared to photons... they're within one order of magnitude. Which means that you could *technically* overwhelm a Star Trek shield with sheer weight of fire from nukes. Though you'd need a lot of them. And consecutively too. That is so unrealistic. I don't care if it is done for cinematic affect. That's just wrong. As soon as that Type-10 phaser would have touched that little ship it would be vaporized instantly.

I think you aren't being fair here. A Galaxy Class ship lost to 1 Jem'Hadar fighter. And another was destroyed by a single Bird of Prey. And Voyager got swarmed by smaller fighter ships too. Yes, even with their phasers with advanced targeting, Voyager still couldn't hit all the fighters, or missed. If massive swarm of fighters attacks a Federation ship, there is a chance the Federation ship can be overwhelmed by smaller numbers -- even with phasers and good targeting.

As both a BSG and Star Trek fan, to see the human fleet rescued by the Enterprise as they finally near Earth space (I'm picturing the outer edge of Federation territory) was a far better ending than any other BSG portrayal I've ever seen. My gawd, that was 2 of my greatest fantasy's colliding as one brilliant MASTERPIECE. My only regret being that I didn't see this in 2012! I Hope you are being paid my friend. THIS is what I expect in movies. And the CGI blows away everything. Even the big Hollywood productions fail to capture what we imagine as space battles. This was better than Star Wars. I love how you choreograph both the battlestars losing fight and then the coordinated entry of the superior federation ships. Man my was heart was leaping. I haven't felt an emotional pang in a movie since the original release of Jaws. And the defiant, I can just see in my mind Worf calling for "Attack pattern, Riker 3!" I see it kind of like this; each phaser array can only support a certain powerload, any more then that and they start to burn out. Firing more then one beam per array could burn them out faster or just weaken the all the beams to the point they wont be effective. Or like the original Yamato Class (not the version based on the Galaxy) where is had super phasers that could blow away just about any other ship around at the time, but it would completely drain the ship of all power to fire them.

@@thomas.parnell7365 True, but it isn't necessary. Another thing this video has wrong (and it started with the same mistake in The Wrath of Khan movie, and was perpetuated in TNG) is the POWER of even TOS era phasers and photon torpedoes, let alone the uppowered phasers and quantum torpedoes of the NG Era. First, photon torpedoes travel at WARP speed (faster than light speed). That's how they can target a ship flying at warp. This was shown many times in TOS. So it would be impossible to "shoot down" a photon torpedo before it hits its target. Even phasers only travel at the speed of light and could never hit a photon torpedo except by pure accident. Second, a photon torpedo detonation isn't a chemical explosion like a present day submarine torpedo. It's a matter-antimatter explosion HUNDREDS of times more powerful than any nuclear bomb. Even a nearby explosion would heavily damage, if not destroy, any unshielded ship. A single direct hit would obliterate ANY size unshielded ship. In TOS, a single 23rd Century starship was said to have the power to completely devastate the surface of an entire planet. This battle would have been over with the very first volley of torpedoes from the Federation fleet. Third, phasers aren't lasers. They don't burn through the target. They are disintegration beams that cause a chain reaction in the target which severs the molecular bonds between atoms and sends them flying apart. Again, one single hit on an unshielded ship, and that ship simply ceases to exist. This was also shown multiple times in TOS. Fourth, in TOS all starships of the Trek major powers are able to engage in combat at warp speed. They don't have to drop to sub-light speed and slug it out like wooden sailing ships. And they travel at warp speed in NORMAL space by creating a warp bubble around their ships. BG ships can only exceed light speed by opening a gate into another dimension (i.e., hyperspace). In normal space, they can only travel at sub-light speed, and their weapons also travel no faster than light. So they not only couldn't avoid being hit by ST weapons, they couldn't hit ST ships fighting at warp speed, and wouldn't even be able to see the ships that were destroying them. To ST ships fighting at warp, BG ships AND their weapons would look like they were frozen in place. They would be sitting ducks, so this battle would be over before the BG ships even knew it had begun. Now, the creators could revise this again to disable not only ST shields, but also their warp drives, but that wouldn't change the huge difference in the power of their weapons. It's fun to watch, and really very well done, but it's silly. The difference in the level of tech used by the two sides is simply enormous. The BG universe wouldn't stand a chance.
@Wortheins
@Wortheins 2 жыл бұрын
@@jiyu9694 TNG Retconned the Torpedo thing and phaser thing to a degree when flying at warp, although correct in the fact that this battle would be over in a matter of seconds, even with just the gaaxy class as the only ship fighting the cylons, 1- Photon torpedoes do not travel at warp, they have warp sustainment coils, that will allow them to fly at warp if they were fired during warp, but this also spends fuel that could be used for the M/AM reaction in the warhead. 2- Phasers cannot be fired at warp because the subspace disruption renders them almost useless. 3- a ship at warp cannot fight a ship traveling on impulse, at warp you are essentially in a space distortion bubble, you can match this distortion and fight other ships at warp, but not outside of this TOS was great for world building but not for rule setting, that was the realm of TNG, just watch Conundrum episode of tng

Antimatter power, energy fields to help hold the ships together, directed-energy weapons capable of slicing the average asteroid in half, never mind what disruptors do . . . Mind, the jump drive would be of some interest, since it operates on a completely different principle than the warp drive. @@Elthenar Operationally, possibly, depending on range and recharge time. That was, IIRC, an issue in at least one episode of nuBSG, that you need time to run the navigational calculations (less of an issue, given Starfleet computing tech) and time to spool up the drive. Tactically, the ability to rapidly reposition for a different angle of attack using a micro-warp jump confers an advantage, especially since Starfleet (and Klingon, Romulan, etc.) ships can switch from warp to impulse at the flick of a switch. You could do the same with a micro-FTL jump, but that depends on whether recharge time is merely a question of how much power you have to spare, or if, as with BattleTech's Kearney-Fuchida Drive, you risk damaging the drive if you recharge it too quickly. Incidentally, K-F drives are limited to 30 lightyears per jump, can only jump from a gravitationally neutral spot and take several hours to recharge, at best.

Most ships of that era, sure, but the heavy battlestars are built to tank several nukes, and have done exactly that. They can probably tank a torpedo. Being unshielded though, they'd have real problems against the phasers; armor or not, they'd melt and fail under the energy assault sooner or later. More importantly they'd have pretty much no options to even get to the armor of the federation ships, much less penetrate for damage. Their only hope would be boarding operations, but that's one heckuva long shot.

To quote Darth Vader: "Impressive." I loved this. Very fun. I was especially impressed with the exterior warp effect at 1:33. Great video as a fan of ST and the original BSG, this was great!

***** It seems you are stuck in your generation time-frame. I understand, it is a natural human condition. Star Trek has been sex-filled since the beginning. And people want more sophisticated characters. It has to evolve or die.

***** Hi, Idazmi, how are you? I'm Enterprise160. Isn't this video awesome?! It's sad that the Colonial fleet lost Adama, but they're in good hands with Jean Luc Picard. :)

I've seen a few other videos like this, thank you for having the Federation ships have shields.

Extremely well done! Unlike in other such videos, the Starfleet ships are shown using all their weapons AND shields. This video I LIKE!💀

Like most say, Federation ships would destory the cyclon vessels much faster... and actually take out the cannons of the cyclon ships then destroy the ship. Cyllon ships might be much bigger, but almost no shields and Fed ships could of scanned where to hit things.

Picard would want to find a diplomatic solution and Janeway would decide it was unethical to use to much firepower. Hopefully Sisco, Kirk, or Archer would be in charge.

David Poland I assumed if this actually happened yes they would take the diplomatic solution but maybe because the dis- belief and stubbornness of the cylons it probably wouldn't work.

David Poland Nah you're assuming Starfleet hadn't appraised the fleet of the situation and issued orders to use deadly force. Diplomatic approaches were only ever applied BEFORE aggression. Ever see Picard in First Contact ask the Borg if they'd mind being ever so nice and stopping their attack? Nope. This video shows thw situation was beyond being saved, use of force is a final solution the only one left to apply.
