So, the way I understand it in conclusion, Ardnt was initially helping Lucas to write the script for the LUCAS sequels. However, after Lucas left the project due to the rejection of his treatments, Ardnt and Abrams were kind of left to duke it out, where Ardnt was working to create compromised story version between Lucas and Abrams, while Abrams wanted to go solely his own way. Well, technically the expanded universe was actually considered as C-canon (continuity canon). There were different tiers of canon back in the day. The movies were G-canon (George Lucas canon), which was the highest tier of canon. G-canon: George's 6 movies T-canon: the clone wars s1-6 C-canon: the entire EU S-canon: some early works and alternate choices in video-games Non-canon: infinities and alternate video game endings.

@justmike30182 жыл бұрын
George Lucas' quote from Starlog #337 (August 2005) does appear to contradict the words and function of the Lucasfilm publishing arm: that the EU was canon, and the reason why was because of their efforts to maintain the EU stories within the same universe as G-canon, and then later the T-canon, which threw a wrench into the well-tended C-canon. What George said was true, but I think Nerdonymous' statement should be put into this context of different levels of canon. It isn't simply "G- & T-canon is canon and everything else is non-canon", that diminishes everything done to keep the franchise going in between movies. Captain Fordo's "Truth about the Expanded Universe and the Expanded Universe Movement" video essay makes the best case I've seen for this so far.
@hanumananky2 жыл бұрын
Another case of completely misinterpreting what George said entirely out of context. Think of it like this, if you're a parent, and you are friends with other parents, you all have kids, and raising those kids is important, a kid's well being doesn't stop mattering because its from a different family, but because of certain psychological, social, and cultural reasons, its important to differentiate between your kids and their kids. This is what happened with that George quote that everyone throws around like gospel. It has nothing to do with the continuity or the canon or the canon hierarchy, its about responsibility. His kid is the six movie saga, much like the books any author writes is their kid; that differentiation is also made in the canon hierarchy as "G-canon", but the continuity canon (C-canon) of Star Wars is the complete story of Star Wars as is, from 1977 to 2014 (excluding of course the T-canon and Filoniverse content) regardless of any esoteric explanation George makes in an interview about the nature of his personal relationships with his work.
@Wackaz2 жыл бұрын
G-canon should be changed to God Tier canon.
@1000g2g3g4g8009992 жыл бұрын
The word "canon" has several different meanings and the answer to what is canon isn't super-straightforward. The most basic sense of "canon," is simply defined by what are the most important or definitive works, the essential bits, the parts that take precedence. Star Wars known primarily as a film series, so that's naturally always going to put the films at the top, but it will also put the shows there because they should reach a similarly wide audience because they're broadly accessible. George however is the creator, and the first 6 episodic titles are about as close to his vision as you're going to get. That doesn't mean he doesn't care about other stories, people like to quote him as if other stories have no meaning to him, but it's very well known that he was heavily involved in a number of works beyond just those films. Obviously all the novelizations are based on his original scripts, and while they may have different versions of scenes that don't entirely match his vision, scenes absent (which may be deleted scenes in the movies) don't automatically cease to exist in his mind because they aren't on screen. Right after those, there's the book Splinter of the Minds eye, where obviously what he wanted to do next changed since the release of that book, but that book is directly based on his work. The original Marvel Star Wars run, Dark Empire, Tales of the Jedi, several multimedia projects (Shadows of the Empire, Clone Wars, The Force Unleashed) also had a lot of direct contribution by Lucas, so clearly he had ideas for what he would have done in stories set then and there, and those ideas are probably pretty close to at least some of the elements of what we got in those stories. Even for works Lucas wasn't as directly involved in, he still had rules for what they could and couldn't do, and authors would even go to him to check to make sure what they were doing worked with his vision (happened with elements of New Jedi Order, for instance, yes, the story with the Yuuzhan Vong, though for some reason I suspect Lucas wouldn't have liked those particular villains as they existed). The position of Lucasfilm was ultimately that most of these licensed works were Canon (and I don't think their wording ever explicitly says they've been "decanonized" specifically), and considering Lucas's involvement in a lot of these works, at the very least, writing off every element of them as irrelevant to Star Wars is a little misguided at the minimum. There are also of course, other creators who talked Lucas out of certain decisions, both in the films and in other media (the only instances I can actually think of this happening outside of the films is in the 2008 TCW series, going off of Filoni's word). I'd just say what's "canon" depends on what you mean by "canon," but as most people seem to use it with regard to Star Wars, at one point most of what is now Legends absolutely was, but in normal usage outside of copyright owners stating it from above, pretty much none of it ever really could be, and it wasn't Lucas's primary or realized vision, whatever influence he may have had (which could be a lot sometimes). And given various statements of what Lucas's intent was when making his films, I question the potential for much of any of the EU to actually accomplish a lot of that by nature of the very medium.

I have never seen a more well-researched examination and elucidation of any topic... ever. I don't know what you do for a living, but I really hope you are in journalism, because it would give me some hope for the fourth estate. This, with your rebuttal to the "saved in the edit" video, represents real fact-based, truth-seeking deep dives into the reality of these topics as opposed to emotional hand-wringing that I see in most videos. I can't imagine how long these take to do, but it's very clear that you go into these topics with an open mind and allow the evidence - rather than agenda - inform your conclusions. I love how you skewer both the reactionary fans and those responsible for discarding and destroying Lucas' vision for the sequels. There is no doubt that Lucas' vision - the Whills and so forth - would have upset a lot of fans. People might have been upset about where George took us next, but we still wouldn't want anyone else to finish the story. The amazing excellence of the Clone Wars animated series proves that Lucas is still capable of making amazing, quality Star Wars entertainment. When I was watching Game of Thrones and The Red Wedding occurred, I wanted to throw a brick at my television. I HATED what happened. I was incredibly angry, and I actually wept for the characters that died. That is not what I wanted to happen to them, but even though I hated what happened and missed those characters, I still didn't want some other person besides George R.R. Martin continuing to tell the story. It's his story, those are his characters and I only care about seeing what happens next if he is telling the story. The abysmal way that show concluded just illustrates how important it is to follow the creator's vision and story. The same is true about the Star Wars sequels. I might not like how he tells the rest of the story. The dialog might suck, the acting might not be great, but I only care to see his story. Now, I might wish he gets someone to help with the dialog. I might hope that someone else directs (with his active participation). I might hope he gets really good collaborators. But, I only want to see his version of the story made. It's the only version that matters. It's the one we've all been dying to know since we first saw Return of the Jedi and knew there were three more films coming to finish the story. I don't care what JJ Abrams thinks should happen next, I don't care to see his version or Disney's version. I want the creator of the story to tell me how it ends, and nothing else will suffice. It is his story, those are his characters, he created them and only he can tell us what really happens next. I really hope we get to see that before he dies. I signed the petition and chipped in $10, because I would take a shoddy-made animated film over the garbage we got. I know these videos take a lot of work and a great deal of time, but please give us a deep dive into what the stories might have been. After experiencing your videos and how well-researched and factual they are, I really only care to see a presentation on this by you. It's the only one I would I trust to be accurate. Thank you so much for these videos. The quality is just amazing and incredibly rare in a world gone mad. Thank you!

Disney and KK used actors who were already out grown so that a Star Wars movie could be released every two years. I consider KOTOR books and games canon and in my own "Head Canon" i like to think ALL my favorite EU characters, such as Kyle Katarn & Jar Ors, Dash Rendar, Kam Solussar and Mara Jade exist and are out there in the Galaxy and at some point after events of the Mandalorian Luke does meet Mara Jade and they end up in a relationship. I don't consider Disney's Sequel Trilogy as "Canon" to anything. I only consider Rogue One and Favreau & Filloni's Star Wars shows as Canon to Lucas's Skywalker Saga.

the sad part is that the Filoni shows still feature references to the sequel trilogy, such as throwaway mentions to the planets (like Canto Bight) and even that Snoke clone facility that featured in one of the episodes if I'm not mistaken. 50:22 is really funny bc it just goes to show how my they don’t understand midichlorians, or the force. everyone has the force. padme has the force, han has the force, chewie has the force, every living thing *does* because they are all bound together by it. according to qui gon, life wouldn’t exist with out the force and midichlorians. all these characters have midichlorians, and the midichlorians can communicate the will of the force through them, but only those with enough can tune their mind to hear and understand the will of the force. jedi work with the will of the force, sith make the force work for their own will. the whills feed on the force and communicate their will via the midichlorians. this is the level of understanding i’d expect a sci-fi universe would have of their magic system (and a pretty well-built magic system imo), and it also says a lot abt george lucas’s personal philosophy. the first 6 star wars films explain george’s personal philosophy, not what 11 year old JJ misinterpreted it as.

@WillFanofMany TCW was originally C-canon also, until after season 2 or 3 when it was given its own category. There's all sorts of C-canon works that Lucas was directly and/or heavily involved in that didn't make it into the new canon. There were even "George canon" works(like the novelizations) that are now sold under the legends banner. What was kept and what wasn't kept had nothing to do with Lucas's level of involvement. The decision to reboot everything but the films and TCW wasn't made when Lucas sold to Disney, but almost 2 years later. TCW was kept in the new canon because Dave Filoni wanted it there, and had the say-so to keep it, and was working on new projects that tied into it.

Fantastic video. I'm fascinated by how much the development of Star Wars as a franchise and the fandom mirrors the evolution of a religious movement. You have the fundamentalists that only accept the OT, those of the Prequels/New Testament that re-contexualized the events of the OT from the Creator, which are rejected by many of the fundamentalists but enthusiastically embraced by the new generation. And now we have a heretical movement growing out of the Creator's canon now that the Creator/Prophet is out of the picture, and drawing condemnation from the adherents of both the OT and the NT but drawing new adherents of their own, who must now defend themselves against charges of heresy from the traditionalists. Just like any religious/socio-political movement, it's a mess.

What an excellent documentary of the events! This deserves so many views. I recall seeing the interview where JJ spoke of the cantina scene, cringing, and getting a really bad feeling for what we were about to get... I enjoyed TFA on the first viewing, but the more you think about it and the closer you look into things the more obvious it is that it's just a version of ANH, makes little sense as part of the saga, and that the makers of it do not understand Star Wars. I also remember him speaking of Star Trek, saying he's not even a fan. I'm not a Star Trek fan myself, either, but I if had heard a Star Wars director say they aren't even a fan of Star Wars, I would've been insulted. Huge red flag there. That being said, even if JJ is a "fan" of Star Wars, he's most certainly not the kind of fan that should have been given any creative control over Star Wars, since he clearly does not respect George Lucas's canon. Also THANK YOU for that part about the midichlorians. It's so frustrating that people to this day think midichlorians are the Force and thus somehow destroyed it.

Very good video. You might be the best journalistic youtuber talking about Star Wars. You could have speculated a bit more on why Disney picked JJ and Kenedy scrapped Lucas' script because they're one in the same. They originally wanted to go with Lucas, Kenedy or Disney Executives got anxious that doing whatever Lucas wanted was bringing the same uncertainty of the prequels. The mood in 2013 or so was heavily based on RLM echoing prequel hate that Lucas is an idiot who didn't know anything. And JJ, while originally onboard by being good at rebooting franchises like Star Trek and being a good box office success, voiced his dislike of the prequels and an adherence to the original movie. That could be the catalyst for why Lucas script was scrapped and an argument for it being accepted by Disney Executives since the mood at the time was that prequels bad original movies good. But now, with the sequel movies, people have finally realized that the prequels are good, although people didn't and don't understand the full extent to why they are good movies. Either way, beyond my own addition to your conclusion, this is a great video.

Part of it was also the 2015 deadline. Michael Arndt was working his behind off to make Lucas's vision work until basically the bitter end before JJ essentially took full control. It was taking him too long for Disney's taste, but, it was only taking him so long because he was trying to write out a draft for the entire trilogy in one go, and because Kennedy literally didn't lift a finger to vouch for his efforts, despite being the one responsible for bringing Arndt onto the project (facepalm). The pressure from Disney to release a Star Wars movie by 2015 was the perfect leverage for JJ to make them ditch Arndt, ditch Lucas's storylines altogether, and go with his mystery box of a movie, with the promise that treatments would be good enough to go off of for Episodes VIII and IX.

Someone (Frank O’Connor) who thought they knew better than the original creators of Halo was given the keys to the halo castle. He then, similar to JJ, proceeded to inject his own ideas and understanding of the halo universe into everything; books, games, etc. This isn’t necessarily bad because it’s different, but because it clashes with that was created before. Almost everything about the original stories created during the bungie era have been retroactively rewritten. Honestly, I use to let JJ off the hook for a number of things regarding the sequels, but this video has made me accept what I already knew, that JJ was directly involved in the discarding of Lucas’ sequel storyline. JJ is a known prequel hater and OT purist, and I knew that he had no intentions of directing a Lucas-written story, but I didn’t want to accept it. Disney has made good Star Wars content (Rogue One, Solo, and The Mandalorian are all good imo, basically the stuff that isn’t the sequel trilogy), so it IS possible, and JJ wasn’t involved in those so it makes sense. He is a very talented director, but I really wish Lucas had been allowed creative input on the trilogy and that JJ could have collaborated with Lucas, helping bring to life his version of the sequels. The whole ordeal is just kinda sad, but it’s fun to speculate about what could have been (although “what could’ve been” being “what was” would have been much more fun).

I don’t think jj is an OT because he doesn’t like return of Jedi and apparently doesn’t approve of Vader’s redemption

@@billmcdermott9647 So JJ’s more of Star Wars (1977) purist? Maybe he likes Empire too but the original film is obviously his favorite (he’s even said as much).

Really? Solo is probably weaker and a worse movie than the force awakens. I haven’t seen the mandalorian but I’ve also heard it’s rather inconsistent in episode quality.

@@ShawHortonMusic Abrams is specifically one of the fans who thinks that the 'only' good Star Wars movies were ANH and Empire, and that everything from ROTJ onwards was subpar. It's easy to forget that ROTJ was generally looked down upon as the weakest of the OT for stuff like the Ewoks, and for some was the beginning of the end for 'good' Star Wars storytelling. The typical 'bad' third movie in a trilogy. However, ROTJ's reputation has absolutely skyrocketed in recent years, I'd argue in part due to newcomers liking how the prequels add even more emotional weight to the events of that film.

Man, your channel has come up a lot recently on Star Wars Theory and Mauler. I’ve commented with this before, and I’ll say it again here, I really hope you come back at some point. Your perspective on the current state of Star Wars would be very welcome. You honestly made 3 of the best videos ever on Star Wars. This Apocrypha series in particular is criminally underrated.

Despite knowing that as soon as JJ was brought on that it was going to be shit due to his inability to write anything good, ever, I still bought that lie about the executives giving him a blank slate rather than him extorting it. I put more blame on Kennedey than I should have.

Kennedy still betrayed Lucas. Lucas trusted her to stop Iger from throwing out his storylines for the sequel trilogy, but she broke that trust and was complacent to JJ's pitch for the mutilation of Star Wars.

@@youtubeviolatedme7123 you really think that KK had more power and influence over the CEO , the HEAD of Disney?

@@JohnSmith-yd5wq That's not what I said. I'm trying to remind anyone who comes across the comment written by korakys that even though Kathleen Kennedy is not solely responsible for the Disney Trilogy, she shouldn't be absolved of blame. I hold the same nuanced opinion as korakys that the Disney Trilogy was a culmination of multiple people failing to do their jobs properly, and I don't want other people misinterpreting a divestment of blame away from KK means that she's blameless. And if by any chance you believe that Bob Iger is solely responsible for the Disney Trilogy, I should remind you that most leaders delegate power.

Loved the video, but heavily disagree with the opening statement that the Old EU was “non-canon”. You seemed to have taken Lucas’ quote at face-value and not looked any deeper than that. Here is some evidence that debunks your claim: • He consulted with James Luceno when he was writing Darth Plagueis to make sure it told the story he wanted told. He had him report directly to head guy Hoffman instead of the usual editorial staff. •The Dark Horse comics writers sent him a checklist of options to understand the Jedi better. He told them what the Jedi/Sith could and could not do. • He was directly behind Shadows of the Empire, the underworld angle was his idea. • He was directly involved with The Force Unleashed project. • It was his decision in planning the New Jedi Order books to let them kill a main character and which one. • It was his decision that decided which of the 3 children of Han and Leia would be the hero of New Jedi Order, and which would die, based on what he thought was too similar to the Prequel story he was telling at the same time. • It was his decision to go ahead and retain Coruscant as the capital world in the prequels, as it had already been established in books. • It was his decision to take the comic book character Aayla Secura and add her into Attack of the Clones • He was the one who decided to hire Timothy Zahn on the continuation of the after Return of the Jedi era. Certain elements were denied as they would impact on stories that would be told in the prequels, including making Noghri the actual Sith (as Vader was Lord of the Sith) and C’baoth’s clone which would originally have been a clone of Obi-Wan. • He actually suggested Terry Brooks include Expanded Universe material such as from Tales of the Jedi in the novelization of the Phantom Menace. Yeah, so… Lucas was definitely involved in the Old EU and was conscious of it not contradicting his films but also making sure that the films had some references to the EU. He wouldn’t have done any of that if he never considered the EU any level of canon. But regardless of that, I doubt that a lot of the EU post-RoTJ wouldn’t have been at least relegated to an alternate timeline if George decided to produce the Sequels himself. All that said, this is still an amazing video. The true Episode VII-XI is what George Lucas wanted, and it’s the only version I’m interested in seeing in any form, perhaps in a book trilogy one day…
