26:40, when I was a kid, probably in the late 2000s, I would send letters to Lucas’ office. Each time I would get a letter back, from one of his assistants, along with a framed and autographed Star Wars picture. I really think that Lucas genuinely cares for his fans.

George Lucas' execution wasn't always perfect, but he put his heart, passion and integrity into his work. He doesn't care about awards or critics, he just wants to share his vision, for better or worse. That is what makes him a true artist. The problem with Lucas and the prequels in general was the clunky dialogue and lack of performance direction. The winning formula was to get a director in to guide the actor's performances (including dialogue), and George would take care of the visuals. It didn't help that he treated the prequels as a soft reboot of the Universe instead of sticking to an established look, but he had a solid vision.
@MrZackavelli
@MrZackavelli 3 жыл бұрын
@@Syklonus Nnnnnnnnnnnnope. The dialogue isn't clunky, and there is virtually no difference between the dialogue of the OT and the dialogue of the prequels. George absolutely can direct his actors. Granted, it's not his strongest suit as a filmmaker, but every filmmaker has an aspect of their skillset that isn't the strongest. Scorsese has gotten the wrap of not being able to write romance. Speilberg has been teased for not being able to do comedy after 1941. Just acknowledging that these aren't their strong suits doesn't mean they can't do it. He didn't stick to an established look? First of all, this was an intentional stylistic choice. He wanted to show the prequels as being in the age of the Republic, where everything was tidy and well-kept. Flash forward to the Empire, and everything is dirty and rusty. It's a metaphor for the state of the galaxy. Second, so he didn't try to cash in on the nostalgia of the OT and tried something new with the prequels. George was always a visionary. He always wanted to experiment and try new things. He didn't just redo everything and wear it out until the public lost interest in it (which a certain Disney trilogy has done). How in the world are the prequels a soft reboot of the universe? The prequels are entirely original and they interlock with the OT perfectly. Those awful cashgrab sequels are the ones who are the soft reboots.

I think that his whole life was just Star Wars, something that almost killed him making in the first place. An experience so bad, he basically abandoned his dream of directing. So, while he was able to tell stories, it wasn't in the way he'd once hoped. At least not until the prequels. Then he got nothing but hate from man-children until he finally sold his baby. At the end of the day, for all the positives Star Wars brought him, as stated in this video, his life is probably so much better without it.

He bristled at studio interference over Star Wars, but eventually sold his creation to a cynical corporation. It still baffles me that Disney started a very expensive movie trilogy without a solid plot line first. They very clearly just made it up as they went along, as evidenced by the damn test screenings three weeks before the Rise of Palpatine was released. Even then they had no idea whatsoever how the movie should end. It's mind boggling! Normal people write more comprehensive shopping lists.
@swansong487

Agreed. There will always be debate about elements of the films - the characterization of Luke, the return of Palpatine, Rey's lineage, etc. And even if some of those things remained, like you I will always be baffled that they didn't at least have a cohesive vision or outline for the trilogy. Especially when their sister studio Marvel had shown how lucrative that could be.

@@swansong487 They had activists fighting over it the entire time. At least that's my take. Force Awakens was derivative, but nothing was hopeless after that movie. Rey was still alive and not exclusively a feminist plank, frozen in timeless perfection and drudgery, Finn was dynamic, sort of, the plot sort of made sense etc. I mean it wasn't great by any stretch, but if they had made three movies like that I think it might at least have been an average-y movie trilogy. But the two massive changes of direction and all the smaller ones made it an obnoxious, directionless, outrageously political and increasingly spiteful mess of a trilogy that makes the Hobbit look like an all-time classic.

@@politicallycorrectredskin796 Yeah, I don't really buy the whole "woke" thing. It wasn't any kind of message that ruined it, and it didn't really strike me as overly political - at least not moreso than its predecessors. I think VII was an attempt to recreate the Star Wars "formula" which it leaned too heavily on. With VIII, Rian Johnson wisely didn't try to do that. He wanted to go in a fresh direction, but in doing so he abandoned threads from VII and introduced things that would then be abandoned in IX. And IX was just a bad movie, especially when thrown in with VII and VIII.

@@swansong487 For the story telling it was. If a character is infallible because of sex, race, misc you have just written a dull character. It's basic stuff really. if you read LOTR, not even Gandalf was infallible. if he had been he would not have become a beloved literary figure. And he was basically a demigod. For the sake of the story he still had to be made flawed. Wise etc but neither invincible or omniscient. Now look at Rey. Never needs any training, never gets beaten, is always right and so on because she is a woman. It is just a seriously dull character. This is why all of Steven Segal's male characters are boring too. They are too perfect, too superior and too unthreatened by the various shenanigans of the villains. It's why kryptonite had to be invented to salvage the hopelessly dull Superman. It's a known literary problem and one of the main reasons fanfic tends to be bad. Usually at least one character is hopelessly OP = dull. KK and friends can't give a stunning and brave whamens any weaknesses, because that would be sexist! And they also can't give any white men in particular any admirable qualities either, because that would be even sexister! They even managed to ruin the Finn character with this nonsense. So now you have a movie with infallible women who never lose or face any doubt at all and evil, dumb, clumsy and confused men who always fail at everything. Because progress! Anyway, it makes all the characters, both the men and the women, dull because they become predictable. Wokeness therefore definitely harmed the basic story telling, and it is definitely a major flaw with the writing. You can't have dynamic, interesting characters if they are typecast in this childish manner. It's really what Hollywood used to do with the enemy du jour back in the day. Evil Jappos during WWII, evil Huns in the 30s, evil Islams during the Barbary pirate stuff etc. That's boring too. It's what Hitler did with the Germans and Jews in his propaganda movies. And it's all just extremely, mind-numbingly boring.

@@politicallycorrectredskin796 You seem generally sensible, regarding where "woke-ness" fails a story vs enhances it. I'd argue the only effective use of "Wokeness" is through presenting the philosophical issues multi-laterally [ie. BOTH sides of a "Woke" issue having their benefits and detriments highlighted to observe or imagine their implementation: (ie. Dystopian Sci-Fi, which mostly can be boiled down to "Good Ideas, bad results"). The alternative, (or unilateral view on an issue) I would consider, more akin to a form of propaganda, or at the bare minimum, biased by taking an inherent side]. Further, I agree with your point. "OP characters" w/ little to no flaws are boring, as no believable individual in a difficult circumstance would be without worry or flaw... ...However, you don't need to use a derogatory hate-speech to make a valid point. Unless you really think of us (The Japanese) that way, or maybe you don't understand the weight that term holds. But I don't see why you would refer to every other ethnic/religious/racial group "Normally" like Jews/Germans/Muslims, and... of course "The Evil Jappos?" (Look it up). Fine point overall, but really fucking unnecessary word choice, where there's no need whatsoever for that kind of language.

I know the flaws of the films but I cherish them for the amazing story, ending with some of the most artistic emotional poetry in the finale of Episode 3. He has actually said the opposite of this several times he wants to make Star Wars to make people happy. He just has a specific idea of the universe. That doesn’t line up with what a lot of the fans want. Disney has made several changes that are unpopular. But they have also made several changes that people wanted to see. Like Boba Fett finally being recognized as a Mandalorian. And showing off more of what the rebellion was like. Other stuff people don’t like. Like I didn’t like how they treated Luke. But a lot of other stuff Disney has done has been good the movies are just trash

Like the one who abandoned his principles and sold out. But who can blame him? That´s what the monetary system persuades, if not forces, us to do. And he made sure that Star Wars will not die with him, he made it as close to immortal as possible. The ball is in Disney´s court now, it´s up to them to treat it with respect. Otherwise it will fade in time. But yeah, selling your creation to a large corporation is not the way to defeat the rule of large corporations. It goes way deeper than that though, to the very essence of money creation and the telecom infrastructure that controls the central banking system. We are all pawns of our own greed and potential for corruption. But a lot is being done to combat the current system, to reveal its true nature. If George meant for the dark side to be a metaphor for all this, then he is as awake as Tolkien was.

SW under Disney was really mixed. They really rushed their content in the beginning to make their money back. TFA concept art really shows that there were conflicting visions for the movie and the same with Rouge One, Solo and TROS although I like Rouge One the behind the scenes issues can’t be denied. The shows look great and Mando was a huge success. Currently all the shows look more like short term investments but yeah we shall see I really hope that Lucasfilm and Disney learned from their mistakes. And Disney don’t force Lucasfilm to make every year a movie.

Yeah I agree that star wars under Disney has been pretty mixed and because of the conflicting vision's it caused the whole fan base to split apart ( that and the controversy's and not meeting there theories ) and in resulted in the the 2 sides that are at each other's throats and attacking people outside of there circle jerk to ( those sides being the Disney enforcers and the fandom menace ), heck mandalorian was supposed to be the show that united the fanbase but all that changed when the 2020 election happened and Pedro Pascal made that meme about Trump supporters and that's when the fans went back to there unsatisfied selves and now started hating mandalorian because of it, but asiding that one thing we can hope that Disney will hopefully make the right decisions and let Dave and John have full control of lucusfilms and other people who knows what to do on the comic and video game side of the franchise and maybe actually have the fan base actually be united but then again only fate can decide the outcome of what happens

I grew up during the Clone Wars show and saw the first episode when I was just 6 years old. That was my introduction into Star Wars so when I watched the prequels it was after I had already grown in love with the prequel era. I admit the movies had their flaws but the story was engaging and seeing how they connected to the animated show was exciting for me. I never saw Episodes 1-6 in theaters so my first Star Wars cinematic experience was when I saw The Force Awakens in 2015 when I was 13 years old. I loved it and when Rogue One came out a year later I enjoyed it even more. This was around the time I first got social media, and began to follow star wars fan accounts. That was when I started to see others opinions on the Force Awakens for the first time. In some ways it was a good thing because it helped connect me with a community of fans, but it also exposed me to some not-so-nice opinions which I'll be honest were true and that is that The Force Awakens felt like a carbon copy of A New Hope. But considering it was only the first of three films in the trilogy, I had faith Disney would have a great story planned out. The hype was high as it got closer and closer towards The Last Jedi, but that's when things changed. After I saw it in theaters I still thought quite positively of the film, but after some reflection I decided I didn't like the way they dealt with characters from the Force Awakens like Snoke and the very absent Knights of Ren and some new characters like Rose Tico and Admiral Holdo. Because I had no nostalgic ties to the OT, I had no problem with how they potrayed Luke Skywalker. To me, it made sense that fear of failure can affect even the bravest of heroes. The fanbase became extremely toxic at this point and this was when I realised that Star Wars fans can become very angry over these things, and that its happened before with the prequels as well. Regardless, during this time I was enjoying the finale to the second Star Wars animated show Star Wars Rebels and this was the only positive thing happening at the time. People began talking of boycotting the next anthology film Solo even though to me it looked great, and sure enough I was not disappointed when I saw it in theaters. The only disappointment I had was for those that chose not to see it after the controversy over The Last Jedi. Things looked bleak for Star Wars until an amazing thing happened; The Clone Wars was coming back for one final season! I was beyond ecstatic when I saw this news. Finally, something that fans could unite together on and become more of a positive community again. There was also the announcement of the new live-action star wars show planning to release on Disney's new streaming service Disney+ called the Mandalorian and was coming in 2019. Although it didn't peak my interest that much originally I still planned to watch it when it came out. Boy I'm glad I did. Star Wars was really back. It seemed while the theatrical releases were receiving poor reception, Star Wars was making the real bucks on the small screen. As The Rise of Skywalker date crept closer I strangely didn't have a whole lot of excitement for it compared to the other films. I think the negativity of other fans was beginning to rub off on me. After I watched it in theaters I felt flat. It was supposed to be a thrilling conclusion to the saga, yet so many things felt forced or messy and there was some serious pacing issues that really soured the experience for me. I was expecting it to 'fix' any issues I had with the previous two entries but I found it to be my least favourite of the three just because of how messy and unplanned it felt. Thankfully I still had the seventh and final season of the Clone Wars to look forward to. When I finally got to watch that I knew there was still potential for Star Wars to not lose its way. It was phenominal. When the second season of the Mandalorian came out I was yet again blown away by the work of Jon and Dave. They really knew how to appeal to every type of star wars fan, and at the same time have the story planned out with a singular vision instead of two confilicting ones like what happened with JJ and Rian with the sequels. With the news of 10 new star wars projects in the works a week ago, I am once again excited and I hope to see our fanbase become a less toxic place and instead of fighting over pre-conceived expectations, be excited along with me for the future of this franchise. Star Wars gives everyone a special feeling, and no matter how or what causes it we should instead celebrate it rather than critize something designed as an escape from reality for everyone. We as fans should learn to love what we love, and dislike what we don't in the Star Wars universe, but respectively discuss our subjective opinions and agree to disagree without unessessary hate or toxicity.

what they did to luke was pretty awful... by they i mean what rian johnson did to luke was pretty awful, although jj did design the force awakens around a absent luke... which really depends on why he was absent, if he was busy doing some serious force business like holding back a invasion of dark side users that coulda been cool, if he was using the force to try to repair the balance of the galaxy, that coulda been really good, and if he had been hunting down artifacts and knowledge to banish or bind the emperors soul away from being able to harm anyone ever again, that woulda made perfect sense.

I love this comment. I love seeing people like you who genuinely enjoy the franchise. However, it also shows how the media ruins what we love. You said you loved TFA and TLJ after seeing them, but then when you saw other opinions you just joined with the group. That’s the issue. If you see something and you really enjoyed it, you don’t have to change how you feel just to fit in. Love what you love. Also… Star Wars was never about good writing. Heck, 4 out of 6 of Lucas’s films don’t really have good writing. But people still like them. Why does Star Wars now have to be perfect? Answer? People nowadays are overwhelmingly negative on everything. Especially when it comes to social media. People join in with the “horde mentality” mindset blindly because they want to fit in with the standard

When George served, when referring to critics “they haven’t liked any of them really“ that’s a fact that he’s lost on a lot of modern fans. A lot of people who hated the prequel‘s forgot that there was tons of controversy surrounding the original trilogy‘s reception as well. There was a lot of people who hated that Darth Vader was Luke’s father and they thought it was corny, people who thought the characters were annoying or immature, Not to mention the sheer volume of people who actually felt that the movie trilogy should have just been one movie because after the destruction of the death star they thought that the rebel alliance would’ve overpowered the empire and so further movies were not needed. George is very astute in his observation which said that basically people will hate you no matter what you do so just do what the hell you want anyways and critics be damned

Yes! I remember being a young fan in the 80/90s and there was a huge segment of the population who hated it as corny and stupid and we fans were soundly mocked. I considered myself a nerd because of how I was treated by my peers over my SW infatuation. Now I look around and it’s in Disney parks lol! I guess we were the trend setters.

Why George Lucas had so many problems in the film industry is because he not only wanted people to see his vision but he also wanted to make sure people would enjoy and relate to his vision. His remaster or what he likes to call his originals, are the best examples of that as even though they were very old, we found them to be enjoyable. Part of it has to do with the fact that improved technology makes the films look bad and an eyesore so his re-colorization was his way of looking at how future fans would see his films. His addition of extra scenes in the special editions also showed the fans how impactful the events were in the Star Wars galaxy. The film industry doesn't always care about what the people want as long as people will watch their films and can find a suitable cash cow.

I loved the original trilogy, liked the prequels and hated the Disney trilogy. Probably the same with most fans. I think the lack of story in the disney trilogy proved Lucas was right. At least we got a version of Luke in the Mando that felt right. I think Kathleen Kenedy is the wrong person to be incharge.

-You don't use the "ending" of the Saga that the original creator pitched -You wipe out the entire EU(I can understand post-ROTJ, but ALL of it was extreme) -You cancel Clone Wars -You shut down LucasArts -You have Mark Hamill saying that he couldn't consider the character he was playing as Luke Skywalker any more That is an absolute failure in spirit, depth, creativity, and integrity. The Kennedy Productions(7-9, Rouge One, Solo) are Null and Void as far as I'm concerned. Filoni birthed Clone Wars with Lucas, Filoni created Rebels, Favreau and Filoni created The Mandalorian. THAT is true Star Wars.
