the first three episodes are great because they follow a coherent structure. So far, I feel like episodes 4-6 have all been pretty much removed from the overall story and have been pretty much aimless until the end of each episode where it is revealed a minor antagonist is going after baby yoda and so they must escape to begin another videogame sidequest. That's just my take away so far, but I feel like the first 3 episodes combined would make for the best star wars movie since Jedi.

I don't know, I really liked 4 with its Zatoichi vibes and the way it elevates a simple AT-ST to nightmare status. And I think 6 is one of the best episodes yet (10/10 would not let Bill Burr lead my prison break). Episode 5 has been the only weak one for me, due to it feeling too rushed for the story they were trying to tell (and criminally underusing Mulan).

What bothers me is that they letter boxed it like "this is better than tv, it's basically a movie" but then the last 3 episodes have been aggressively tv episodes, if that makes sense. Yes, but Mando didn’t get himself out of the tree there. Baby Yoda did. I’m sure the show uses the three act structure well, but I can’t see how Mando learned anything, or used any learnings, to get out of that problem. I feel like this scene is more of an effective story beat in an overall journey than a self-contained three-act structure.
@CanisMythson5 жыл бұрын
Baby Yoda didn't end the fight. He just gave Mando a chance to finish it. Mando is beginning to learn that he doesn't have to do everything alone, that it's okay to accept the support of others. This arc is continued throughout the series so far, from his lone stand against the bounty hunters being saved by assistance from the other Mandolorians, to his travels showing him that sometimes, other people can help him do things he couldn't on his own, to the eventual climax of him fully embracing that he needs help, and building his own team, out of people he can trust.
@FullOnGritz5 жыл бұрын
A three act structure doesn’t necessarily have to be a “Heroes journey” or vice versa. The mudhorn fight has several beats broken down into 3 base emotional acts you have a build up establishing the threat, the hopeless beatdown scramble, then finally the relief.
@Atticus_Moore5 жыл бұрын
@mascott10 the mandalorian is a flat character arc so far. what that means is that he doesn't change. he remains the same. the only thing he would "learn" would be new skills. BUT as each episode passes he changes the lives of people around him. he brings peace to the land of the old man, he brings peace to the widow on the grass planet. which by the way is a big western theme. the protagonist usually a good killer bringing peace to those around him through violence and leaving because if he stayed it would only bring more violence later down the road and the people deserve peace so the cowboy leaves at the end of the movie. the show is heavily inspired by old westerns which were all flat character arcs. i think its beautiful writing!

It's kinda hard to see this as "the best example of the 3-act structure ever" when Mando doesn't even have a character arc in it.
@squidlytv4 жыл бұрын
You don't inherently need a character arc in a 3 act structured scene. A 3 act structure can be used to facilitate an arc but doesn't have to result in one. Typically when we are talking scenes the change can come from a situational change. In the case of this particular scene we learn that the Child is able to use the force. Mando realizes the Child has this weird power and it makes him inherently curious.
@guyr36184 жыл бұрын
@@squidlytv That's true! I just meant that "the BEST example of a 3-act structure" would be an example that includes a character arc. If it doesn't, then it's more like, "a decent example of a 3-act structure."
@squidlytv4 жыл бұрын
@@guyr3618 Right of course. I imagine the video creator probably wanted to have as much of a spoiler free scene to examine. If one looks at this video as informative, there are plenty of people in this comment section who never made the observation that scenes themselves are three act structures. So picking out such a simple fight scene allows for that information to be conveyed.

Not suddenly rewarded for a previously established value. It's a great scene though and nice video as always, but I'm not convinced this is a great example of classic three act structure.
@z-beeblebrox5 жыл бұрын
That's too specific. The 3-act structure is a structure, it doesn't make distinctions granular enough to differentiate between internal and external revelations, otherwise you'd be locking out entire swathes of stories that should otherwise fit.
@marteng19415 жыл бұрын
@@z-beeblebrox Yeah, I don't disagree. But if we're not being specific, then almost any scene or sequence or series of scenes can be applied to a three act structure, as long as the character has a task, obstacles and a lowpoint/highpoint, that is then reversed in the end.
@z-beeblebrox5 жыл бұрын
@@marteng1941 Well yeah, but that's also sort of the point: it's supposed to be broad enough that anything you can imagine could potentially fit as long as your goal for the story aligns with the structure. The math doesn't work out. Mentally he should be in his late teens if not actually having the mentality of a 50 year old man in a 2 year olds body. Other than that..... The show is great. Love it. I feel bad for Rise of Skywalker in that, as the finale of a trilogy of trilogies, the rhythm is off; the prequel trilogy got to end on a tragic, ominous note, the original trilogy ended happily, and then the final trilogy ends... happily, again? There's a ton of valid criticism that JJ is repeating the original trilogy, but he's in a spot where the tri-trilogy structure is working against him as far as being unique. I especially think Last Jedi squandered its second-act position since it didn't really change much and didn't develop characters or their relationships, leaving JJ with a finale where he has to end it in a satisfying happy way but without the setup necessary for that satisfaction.
@z-beeblebrox5 жыл бұрын

I really like the show and I didn't think I would, but I didn't like episode 5 and the return to tatooine. It makes the universe seem small when such a small unimportant planet in the universe keeps popping up (especially when it isn't related to the skywalkers.) I also found the story hitting predictable beats and the characters were a bit too wacky for my tastes.
@squidlytv4 жыл бұрын
I think the show does Tatooine better then any other Star Wars medium. The planet is no longer the dust pit that the destined hero's wish to leave. It's the place of brutal cultures and criminal activity. Plus it helps the show match it's American western roots. Sure we could go to another desert planet, call it some wacky name like Jakku. However it just becomes a rip off of Tatooine. So why not expand on the culture of Tatooine if we are doing desert planets. Which the Mandalorian has done with Tusken Raiders and those hooded scrapper dudes. SPOILERS FOR SEASON 2 Plus the show goes to Tatooine because it's setting up the return of Boba Fett. Which cannot be done on another planet.
