Well, if those are Senate guard, then unfortunately, they actually aren’t that much of a threat. In the days of the Republic, during the Clone Wars anyway, the title of Senate Guard was more or less just a title of prestige. It was usually given to the most Nobel families, and/or those who bribed their way to get there. So odds are, those two got their shit wrecked rightfully due to their pampered, rich boy stereotype esc lack of training. They may have garb of the Imperial Guards, but there is no way that they have the training. GRANTED, no one lasts against Yoda. Besides Palpatine, if Yoda is trying, or usually even not, then your ass is getting handed to you, By Kermit’s old monk uncle. And ALSO, sorry for even putting this here. It’s probably pointless. I agree wholeheartedly with the two biggest points in this video: 1: The dueling skills of Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor are phenomenal. Regardless of how stupid some of the choreography looked in the fight, you cannot deny that they were both phenomenal duelists by the time the prequel trilogy concluded its filming, and these days it is incredibly rare to see swordsmanship, even for the purposes of entertainment, of that quality. 2: Obi Wan Kenobi did fail, because, like he said, he loved Anakin. Too much to end his life, too much to end his suffering. He loved Anakin, but hated what he had become so much that he wanted him to suffer for it.

And as pointed out in another video, Obi-Wan ultimately trained Anakin not because he thought it was the right thing to do, but because it was Qui-Gonn's dying wish. Hmm stupid choreography you say? It is without a doubt one of the greatest fights in cinema history. And by greatest I don't only mean from a movie perspective but also considering realism. There are very few fights in cinema that are as realistic as this fight. In 90% of the fight they use historically realistic stances and techniques. I suppose what you refer to is the flourish when they swing their swords around. I mean that is only a few seconds out of a 6 minutes fight. If so you also have to criticize Obi Wan's pointless spin in ANH and Luke striking Vader's saber 5 times in ROTJ.

I've always found that line to ring true not just in the context of everything that's happened but in the fact that just before the duel as well as that very scene when they converse obi wan doesn't truly try to understand anakin or at least appeal to him. Anakin has his reasons for doing what he's done and from his pov the jedi are acc evil but obi wan condemns him a final time by saying that "well then u are lost". The fact that we see the pain it causes anakin to do what he has done and the fact that he was even willing to even bother conversing with obi wan shows that he wasnt completely gone, he wanted obi wan to understand him, however when obi wan says that final line to him and they engage in combat again, he really had failed for the final time and solidified his turn into vader once he was defeated, left for dead and then lost everything. Makes both obi wan and anakin so complex and tragic.

The sequence that's most overlooked is actually Yoda vs. Sidious in the Senate. Lucas's mutual condemnation of both the Jedi & Sith is brilliantly understated in this scene-- In the galaxy's most hallowed spires of democracy, the fate of the Republic is quietly being decided in the dead of night by the heads of warring secret societies with no one else around to witness it. The fate of the galaxy won't be decided by sovereignty or the free will of its citizens, but by a duel between secret mystical orders 90% of the galaxy has never actually seen or encountered before. The citizens have zero say in the matter. The Republic, as an institution, has been a sham all along, and the Jedi played a significant role themselves in getting it to this point. The symbolic storytelling is furthered when Yoda and Sidious each lose their lightsabers. Like the representatives who occupy them, each pod in the Senate represents an individual world in the Republic. By hurling them at Yoda, Sidious is symbolically demonstrating he's willing to use entire worlds as cannon fodder as long as it means destroying those hated Jedi. Final victory is all that has ever truly mattered to Sith or Jedi. Call it a 'republic'; call it an 'empire, it doesn't matter-- this galaxy has only ever been a battlefield, and the civilizations within it have always been the collateral damage.

As a martial artist, I'm SO glad you touched on the fact that movie fights (especially high action films) are not meant to simulate how a fight looks. A real fight is dirty, gritty, choppy, and frequently not all that visually amazing. Even if its HIGHLY trained combatants. Actually, ESPECIALLY if it's highly trained combatants. A film's fights are meant to showcase some emotional or visceral aspect of the affair. They're trying to get you to feel something akin to what's happening. And the really clever ones will also try and throw in some character flavor or building, either by showing off how differently they fight, or how in tune they are with each other, etc. Even when realism is the name of the game, its to serve that emotional feel. And to sum up my feelings on the mustafar fight... a good warrior can read his opponent. See the moves hes going to make, before he makes them. He fights 2 or 3 steps ahead. And when both warriors are doing this, and they know each other nearly as well as they know themselves, the result might as well be a dance.

Not to mention the force canonically gives Jedi/Sith a small level of foresight where they can *literally* see the opponents moves before they occur. It doesn't explain all the spins and stuff, but at least explains why the fight takes so long. I'm a fencer, and while I occasionally have moments of rapid multi-paries a single point usually is scored within a couple seconds of the first blade contact. Of course if I knew the exact thing my oppontent would do to follow up every beat/parry I reckon I could probably parry many attacks in a row, which in the Star Wars franchise is what you see.

I agree. I have been a practitioner of Tang Soo Do for the past 10 years and I was sparring with my friend (who has trained with me since day 1) and we were using bo staffs. It was a very even match. So even that round 1 lasted 5 minutes and neither of us had scored a point (contact to the midsection is 1 point). The match went for 3 rounds with the final score being 3-3. The whole match lasted almost a half an hour so we decided to call it a draw. Anyway, I am saying that we trained together our whole lives, sparred each other, helped each other with forms and strikes, even meditated before class together; and because of this, we were able to kind of tell what the other person was going to do a split second before they did it. Oh and also, we are both E Dans (second dans, or second degree black belts) and when our teacher who is an O Dan (5th degree) was teaching a lesson on sparring with a bo staff, he had the 2 of us come up in front of the class (even though we were getting ready to leave because our class was over) and teach groups of students how to spar. By the end of the class the students sat down on the mat, leaving a large area in the middle of the do jang. The teacher asked the students which 2 students they would like to see in a sparring match (with and without bo staffs) and they all wanted to see me and my friend. Just as my friend and I were about to prepare, the owner of the do jang (and the most senior Dan member) walked in with his wife (the second most senior Dan member). Keep in mind they have been training for well over 25 years and they are Yuk Dans (6th degree). So now the pressures on for me and my friend because not only do we have over 30 students (that we just trained) watching us, we have our teacher and our teachers teacher watching us as well. The match was 1 round and lasted so long, that every one of the students parents was now sitting in the chairs near the mat watching our match. It finally ended when he went for a strike on my midsection and instead of blocking, I moved which knocked him off balance. He stumbled a bit and I took advantage, striking just under his armpit to score the first, only, and final point of the match. To sum up, after the match we were talking and we agreed that our match was similar to the fight on mustafar because of how long we’ve been training together and how we could essentially predict each others next move. Btw this took like 20 minutes to write 😂😂

the argument that the fight is "over choreographed" is also kind of bad because they forget the relationship between Anakin and Obi-Wan. yes the fight is very flashy, but their connection to eachother is so incredibly strong that they can probably sense 100 steps ahead of eachother. also not to mention the fact that they were training with eachother for 13 whole years at that point. Anakin was taught everything Obi-Wan knew, and Obi-Wan was taught everything Anakin knew. that's why Obi-Wan is on the defensive the whole fight until he knows he can strike, he's dedicating all of his energy into sensing Anakin's blow and playing to them accordingly because he knows how aggressive Anakin can be. I think Anakin actually could've won the fight if he realized this. Anakin was a very good aggressive duelist, but Obi-Wan was not, and while Anakin may not be insanely good on defense, him being good at an offensive style would've given him the advantage if he played more passive and let Obi-Wan take the aggressive stance, rather than playing into Obi-Wan's greatest strength. because even if Anakin can out match him physically, mentally Obi-Wan is miles ahead, and that is what he failed to realize because Anakin was too naive and full of himself

I know his weakness is his knee and elbow, he knows my weakness is my back and right ankle. He knows I fight defensively then intercept and I know he likes to attack, grapple and intercept. I’m way stronger, he’s way faster. Here’s the tricky part. If either of us hit the other, still hurts and effects the nature of the fight. I can still catch him off guard and he can still catch me off guard. Trust me, just because someone trained you doesn’t mean they are going to meet you blow for blow, and just because you learned their tricks doesn’t mean you’re gonna be able to stop them from exploiting your weakness. TLDR. This is a BS excuse for a poorly made fight that was choreographed without thought out into drama. The key to Space Opera.

Where is the feeling that this fight is a horrible result of betrayals and where is the weight to every blow? No where. Nothing happens in this duel beyond kung fu then defeat. I noticed a couple of interesting points while watching this: First, Obi-wan's love for Anakin was exactly the kind of attachment the Jedi feared would corrupt and give rise to the dark side--which here saves Vader. Obi-wan fails to do the right thing because of the Jedi's attachment. While the Jedi pursued ideals, its clear that its not so easy to uphold them when the chips hit the table. Second, as a mirror to the first, Vader's defeat is a direct result of his pride and lust for power. Challenging the high ground even though retreating or trying to engage from another direction is an option is a move dripping in sith ideology, especially Vader's specifically--to challenge the limitations other perceive with direct power. (Also the fact that Obi-wan is claiming the high ground literally and figuratively is such a nice tie in).

@@mobzillalongtail The story of Luke showed us that attachments were not actually necessary the gateway drug to the darkside the Jedi order had suggested. Infact Lukes actions to protect the people he deeply cared about is what eventually ended the Sith. What a lot of people miss is that the original trilogy already showed us that the Jedi order were wrong on this point. Anakin's attachments where never the issue it was the separation from his mother and his initial repression of his feelings for Padme that ultimately caused his suffering. It appears that the correct action was to allow and acknowledge the existence of healthy attachments rather than deny their existence (It wasn't just Anakin who had attachments) and learn to use them to their advantage as Luke did on numerous occasions.
@36moshpit74 жыл бұрын
@James Black Well, the Jedi sought to detach themselves from physical, worldly concerns so they could study and be in tune with the Force, without ego or personal desire weighing them down or corrupting them. A pure communion with the Force, if you will. The Sith embrace their emotions to understand their worldly desires, and use every resource available (the Force, political power, cunning) to gain greater power and realize their ambitions, with nothing holding them back. The Sith ideology's pretty similar to the tenets of capitalism, survival of the fittest, any competitive sport, and the human endeavor: Grow as powerful as you possibly can, indulge your desires, tolerate no weakness, and teach a worthy apprentice expecting them to defeat and surpass you, and so improve the game in general (make the Sith stronger than you could). You also see examples of this philosophy in other media: the Firebenders from Avatar, the Slytherin ideology from Harry Potter ("Follow your desires wherever they lead. That is the insight of Salazar.") Both sides seek knowledge and power by removing the impurities of what they see as distractions, which the other side embraces. The Jedi are too detached and spiritual (Air Nomads, Ravenclaws to an extent), while the Sith are ultimately too blinded by personal ambition and their fear of loss, inevitably destroying themselves and everything they cared about, burning themselves out physically and spiritually (the worst Firebenders and Slytherins). The solution? Take all the best traits from both sides while addressing the pitfalls of both ideologies, and make your own customized philosophy, truly understanding/optimizing the Force, and the world you live in. Closest thing to that is probably the Grey Jedi/Force users.

One could also say that Obi-wan's failure was not as momentous as Yoda's, he did indeed fail - but Obi-wan already told Yoda before going to Mustafar that if push came to shove, even if he were to be victorious, he could not see himself being able to kill Anakin. Though through his victory over Vader, tho he did not eliminate the threat of the Sith, he did ruin Sidious's prediction that Vader would grow to become more powerful than Sidious himself - because of the injuries he sustained on that day, Vader was forever doomed to be chained in his masters shadow, never to grow beyond it. Moving on to speculation territory: It is quite plausible that if Obi-wan would have killed Vader, further down the line Luke would quite possibly have been turned to the dark side - to ironically fill his fathers destiny. Without the presence of Vader, Luke would still have been force sensitive, he would still have been trained by Obi-wan and Yoda, he would most likely have gone up against the Emperor, but without the presence and knowledge of who Vader was and how he came to be who he was, Luke wouldn't have taken more care to not become affected by his darker impulses - Remember that Luke did fall to the dark side in RoTJ, he used every bit of hate and anger towards Vader and would have killed him, if he didn't stop and compare himself to Vader in that very moment. If Vader was dead, Luke most likely would have fallen to the dark side, stayed there and would have grown more powerful than then Emperor - to one day replace him as the Dark Lord.

Before Disney Luke walks into a room with two of the most powerful Sith that ever lived. He just heard about the force 4.5 years ago. He beats the "chosen one" who has trained as both jedi and sith and has decades of experience, straight up. Then manipulates him into throwing the master down a hole and becomes the last man standing. There is a lot of cognitive dissonance when it comes to Luke and Rey. Did Luke have "more" training than Rey? Maybe? Maybe not? Here is about what I can derive: Luke: A few days of training under Obi Wan. A few weeks to a few months of training with Yoda, it's difficult to really derive how much time passed. At least in one of the books we know Luke trained for 6 months on his own before he went back to see Yoda. Luke was heavily involved with the Rebel Alliance....so you know he wasn't involved in Jedi training the whole damn time from ANH. Rey: In my opinion the only "flagrant" Mary Sueism is Episode 7 in her duel with Ben. However, Ben is arguably injured when the fight commences, and it's made clear early in the episode Rey is experienced in martial arts. In the prequels and clone wars, its made pretty evident that skilled non-force wielders are capable of giving Jedi a run for their money. As far as training. A year passed from TLJ and ROS. She had an indeterminate amount of training from Luke. It's also stated pretty clearly she was training for a year straight between TLJ and ROS and was not taking part in any missions for the resistance. Not only running training programs created by Luke but studying Jedi texts. People always bring up "well the Emperor and Vader were old!" So was Dooku, Anakin was Luke's age in ANH with a decade of REAL dedicated Jedi training under his belt and old ass Dooku beat him and Obi-wan. How much dedicated training did Luke ACTUALLY have between ANH and ROTJ?

There isn't really a need to show them moving at "super speed" as it would ruin the movie. Not to mention to even block a "laser" they would always be moving at super speed... making them always being seen as moving faster would just make them look like a blur... and wouldn't be fun to watch

@kaotiqx4 жыл бұрын
Originals are my favourite but I still really like the prequels, yeah the dialogue was a bit clunky sometimes but I really enjoyed all 3 films from the PT, we got the podrace and duel of the fates from TPM. In AoTC Anakin begins having nightmares about his mother dying and he's too late to save her, so we see Anakin use the dark side for the first time to slaughter an entire village of sand people and not just the men, but the women and the children too. In RoTS, we get to see Obi Wan and Anakin in action together at the start, Anakin duels and kills Dooku, Anakin has more nightmares, about Padme this time and this haunts him as he promised his mother at her funeral he would never fail again and Palpatine takes advantage of this and manipulates Anakin, eventually turning him to the dark side. The duel on mustafar was brilliant and we got the "I have the high ground" and "Dewit!" memes. Now obviously not everyone is going to agree the prequels are good, that's just down to personal opinion. It doesn't matter if you like/hate any of the triologies, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Idk. I just got through watching them again today. They really aren’t awful. Even the phantom menace. Sure there’s clunky dialogue and bad CGI. But I really don’t care about those two. The story was great. They might not be empire strikes back. But they definitely aren’t bad movies.
@bmobmo64384 жыл бұрын
It's also worth mentioning that at no point in this duel was Kenobi truly on the back foot. It was actually the perfect matchup for him. Anakin's preferred fighting style was called Djem So, a very aggressive style that relied heavily on brute strength and speed, trying to overwhelm the opponent with a flurry of power attacks, parrying every strike and immediately counterattacking. Kenobi, on the other hand, was the among the greatest masters of Soresu, a very defensive form that was all about prolonging the fight, putting up an impenetrable defense and minimizing energy spent, outlasting the opponent. Obi-Wan wasn't on the back foot, he just wanted to look like he was. He was trying to tire Anakin out, and bait out a fatal mistake.
@mart44144 жыл бұрын
I think his tactics and Soresu skill set did play a part but also deep down he just wasn't trying to kill him and wanted to prolong the fight in order to postpone his mandate as a Jedi. It's why he couldn't finish him off and had to look away when he saw his brother being burned alive.
@theshieldrr9893 жыл бұрын
Not only that tho, if you look right before Obi jumped to the high ground, Anakin tired Obi out. Its even stated the Soresu prolongs the inevitable. Anakin drawing on the dark side gave him the stamina to keep fighting, where Obi was using all of his energy just to keep up with his fallen padawans attacks
@7632ios2 жыл бұрын

I wouldn't say Anakin was dead, but he was buried. One could argue that Anakin/Vader's childhood/early days were all traumatizing. He went from being a slave to all sorts of wild shit to losing his mom to massacring a village and then becoming an actual hero- There are *so* many seemingly dissonant roles the character becomes. I read Vader and Anakin as symbiotic, but often different selves. Like, you choose to wear a persona. It's symbolic of trauma in general, grief or guilt, that he needs to wear his mask/cannot simply remove it. Like, he didn't just snap in Revenge of the Sith... Those structures in his mind were moulded or groomed by Palpatine and the Jedi since day one/He already has the hard to reconcile reality of having two lives; His slave life with his Mother where he was basically a serf and the knights who rescued him just left his mom to rot. And then he becomes basically a space wizard knight with a lot of privilege and power and class. The conflict between Anakin/Vader is there since day one. There's actually a great episode of Clone Wars where Anakin sees the future and dreads it and feels guilt for his downfall *before* it actually happens. The episode ends with none of them remembering the experience. It's oof.

prequels: everything down to the moves in the battles is meticulously planned and beautifully shot and executed. originals: amazing acting, charm and just perfect movies DESPITE having very little budget. The most climactic and meaningful story as well. sequels: lol we poured millions of dollars in, the actors hate the story and there’s literally zero planning. fights are boring. doesn’t even feel like star wars. rey does jack shit and all of a sudden she’s “the chosen one” or wtv

That was bad idea for them to no plan whole trilogy... No ending first... And that why ut failed... First two sequels (force awakened, last jedi) were not bad... But last part did suffer this no plan think... I still think what would happen if trilogy was perfectly planned... Maybe finale would be more perfect (original scipt for episode 9 was perfect finale tbh)

@Thomas Johnson Amazing. Every word of what you just said was wrong.

@Thomas Johnson dude, how can you say there wasnt much to the fight? It started in an open area, then on a terribly narrow pole, then a collapsing drill with lava raining from the sky, then racing down a lava river on small platforms. And you want emotion? Obi wan gives you that emotion! He's heartbroken about having to kill Anakin. The fight had incredible choreography, visuals, and setting, as well as an emotion packed climax. What more do you want?

@Thomas Johnson i have a feeling that you dont understand this scene at all. Is it long, yes. But it isn't boring it has more action packed in it than most marvel movies and the scenery and field change constantly. Also you trying to put real world physics into a story about magic space monks is just hilarious. And before you start this physics argument yes star wars has physics and logic but its internal so its all in the movies and the world and doesn't reflect ours. Now fuck off with your bad opinions and shit arguments

I wish they never made “The force awakens” and on. It started with vader and ended with vader. He balanced the force, which never said would come without casualties and time, and then rey and them come along...

The force awakens is pretty good. Except the other two movies.

Star Wars is the story of Anakin Skywalker. Everything else is a spin-off.

"You were the chosen one!" - Obi-Wan Kenobi. There is a scene in ROTS where Yoda states that the prophecy about the Chosen One can be misread. Obi-Wan *really* wanted to believe Anakin fulfilled the prophecy. You could see the disappointment in his words as he watched his padawan burn on Mustafar, and with it any hope of Anakin returning to the light. Anakin's fall reflects the fall of man in the biblical Genesis story.

@@evertonporter7887 Anakin is the Chosen One though. Obi-Wan begins to believe it was Luke, as seen in Rebels, cause of ROTS and all, but in the end Anakin was the one to destroy the Sith as stated in the prophecy. This is further reinforced by TCW, when the Father straight up confirms Anakin is The Chosen One.
