In this video, we're going to watch STAR WARS: EPISODE I - THE PHANTOM MENACE (1999) for the first time!
ABOUT STAR WARS: EPISODE 1 - THE PHANTOM MENACE:
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace is a 1999 American epic space opera film written and directed by George Lucas. It stars Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Jake Lloyd, Ahmed Best, Ian McDiarmid, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, Pernilla August, and Frank Oz. It is the fourth film in the Star Wars film series, the first film of the prequel trilogy and the first chronological chapter of the "Skywalker Saga". Set 32 years before the original trilogy, (13 years before the formation of the Galactic Empire), during the era of the Galactic Republic, the plot follows Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi as they try to protect Queen Padmé Amidala of Naboo in hopes of securing a peaceful end to an interplanetary trade dispute. Joined by Anakin Skywalker-a young slave with unusually strong natural powers of the Force-they simultaneously contend with the mysterious return of the Sith. The film was produced by Lucasfilm and distributed by 20th Century Fox.

In my opinion the prequels were flawed AND I enjoyed them. I also thought the original trilogy wasn't entirely perfect, therefore it was flawed, but of course the things I perceived as flaws in the prequels annoyed me more because they were _different_ from the original. Ah well, counting your blessings and finding yourself lucky is easy when talking about George Lucas Star Wars. What a story he tells!

Love the prequels. Any alleged "flaw" they have, like the hammy dialogue, the theatrical acting or the computer-heavy effects is a conscious artistic choice. People can subjectively disagree with those choices but it doesn't make them objectively bad. If anything, they're unconventional. But that's just George Lucas for ya. Always innovating, never doing the same thing twice, just a force of unbridled creativity. The prequels are in many ways the most complex, layered and well-developed Star Wars trilogy and they just get better as they progress. So happy that we finally get to experience them through your eyes! ^^

Strongly disagree. He is in tune with the force and what the spiritual side of a Jedi should be. But he is definitely not a good Jedi template. He is a rogue, he frequently goes against the councils wishes and does his own thing, like a maverick. Not that that’s a bad thing, but it’s definitely not a good template of what a Jedi should be. They are supposed to be selfless and only use their power to help others. Qui Gon is constantly using his powers to directly benefit himself and his friends. If he believes in something strongly then he becomes extremely defiant toward his masters. He says he will train Anakin regardless of what the council decide, this is definitely not how a Jedi should act. The best example of a Jedi in the history of the saga would probably be Luminara Unduli or her apprentice Barris Offee. Both very rarely participated in combat and spent the vast majority of their lives at the temple meditating or studying texts to enhance their connections to the force & become more complete beings. They didn’t dogmatically follow orders and questioned authority when absolutely necessary, but they would never actively defy their senior Jedi. The only other Jedi I can think of who would be great examples at the time these episodes are told; would be Kit Fisto & Shaak Ti. Both of whom die in episode 3 but their deaths are brushed over very quickly in the movies. Shaak Ti is killed by Grievous to try to provoke Anakin & Obi Wan into a duel. Kit Fisto is dispatched quickly by Sideous himself during his attempted arrest. Whilst I like Qui Gon Jinn & he is my favourite Jedi from the new republic era, he isn’t what a Jedi should be in its literal sense, in fact he’s probably more of an example of exactly what it shouldn’t be. But his strong will and defiant nature also actually helps him in situations regarding the dark side; he was one Jedi that would never fall to the dark side because of his such strong will. Historically; Bastilla Shan & Revan would have been great examples of perfect Jedi, had they not succumbed to the dark side.

Unfortunately, the actor who played Anakin in this movie (Jake Lloyd) was subjected to incredibly harsh public criticism from adult losers. He was even nominated for a Razzie award for worst supporting actor in 2000. He was 9 years old at the time. This eventually led to him quitting acting. Nobody's really sure what he's up to these days. The actor who played Jar Jar (Ahmed Best) received similar backlash and harrasment for his role in this film. It was so intense that it left him contemplating suicide. Fortunately, he was able to get past it and he is now beloved by many fans who grew up with the prequels. Just recently, he received a very warm welcome for his surprise appearance in The Mandalorian (where he played a Jedi character).

Far too many people in this world have a hard time differentiating movies from real life. On both sides of the camera. I absolutely can't stand the Jar Jar character, but I can't fathom how anyone could be angry with the actor about it. He's just a guy doing a job. Likewise actors shouldn't feel personally attacked when a character they played is critiqued. Particularly in a case like this when the character is largely CG and motion capture. He actually did a great job bringing the character to life so-to-speak, the character just sucked, it's not a personal thing.

@@Anubis78250 To be fair, Ahmed Best was the one that created Jar Jar's speech pattern and dialect. He brought it to Lucas and George said to go with it. That set the tone for all Gungan speech. I remember interviews before all the backlash where he was so proud of what he created in Jar Jar. He thought he would be the hit of the Summer with the kids. I heard later he was quite upset that he was upstaged by Verne Troyer and his character Mini Me that came out the same year.

Jake did not receive criticism from the fans. He was after all only 9 years old. The ones that tormented him was boys his own age from his school. A typical bullying situation. And Best has said in every interview that his interactions with the fans have always been nothing but good. It was a handfull of bad eggs that attacked him and the problem came from the news media that refused to let the story die out because it gave them more sold papers and more web clicks which equals more ad revenue. So the newsmedia made it look like the problem was bigger then it was.

He said that they would enter the long channel at top speed and when the other pilot tried to dissuade him, Luke assured him that it would be ok because, "it will be just like Beggar's Canyon back home." Lightsaber colors have had philosophical significance for quite some time. Without going too deep into the lore and working mostly from the George Lucas canon… Lightsaber color is based on the color crystal used to focus the beam of the blade. Blue is supposed to represent a more dedicated stance on the force and its applications, similar to a medieval code of chivalry. Jedi with these sabers are usually called Guardians. Green represents a more contemplative stance; a willingness to sit and think about little things and how they effect the bigger picture, instead of wading in hip first (Kim, you picked up on this in the Jar Jar trial scene). Jedi with these sabers are usually called Consulars. Yellow, the warmest color traditional to the Jedi, represents a willingness to to partake in more ‘ends justify the means… within reason’ actions in the course of protecting people. Jedi with these sabers are called Sentinels and are fairly rare compared with the first two. Purple (rarer still) represents a dabbling into the Dark-side; an acceptance of anger and negative emotions without allowing them to consume you. You feel the Dark-side, you channel it, but you don’t let it consume you. The reason it’s so rare is because it’s impossible for most to follow this philosophy without falling to the Dark-side. Red, of course, is the color of the Sith. According to Lucas, natural red (and orange) crystals are not ideal for focusing saber blades. Such crystals can, however, be synthesized and do make particularly strong blades in this instance. This is considered a Dark-side technique, because the Sith pour their malice and hate into the crystal-making process, turning the finished product red. However, according to the novel ‘Shadows of the Empire’, Luke used a similar process to create his green blade, though he poured his goodness and willingness to find alternative solutions into the forming crystal, turning it from a beginning red to a finished green.

You are absolutely correct, Anakin is believed to be the chosen one of the Jedi. The Chosen one is an central figure in the Jedi prophecy who’s purpose is being balance to the force by destroying the Sith. It’s even said if the chosen one reach his/her potential the chosen one would easily become the strongest Jedi of all time. The chosen one’s midi chlorian is supposed to be the highest out of all force sensitives including Yoda. In fact the reason why Luke is so powerful in both in force and his powers is because of being the son of chosen one. In short his potential rivals or even surpasses the chosen one. Yes Anakin did sadly become Vader however he did bring balance by killing Sidious. In fact the Return of the Jedi purpose was to show redemption and return of Anakin and finally fulfilled the prophecy of the chosen one. In fact before Anakin became a force ghost, Obi Wan told Anakin he deserves this because he fulfilled the prophecy.

Yep you’re right. A lightsaber gets its colour from the Kyber crystal imbedded within the hilt. A synopsis of colour meanings & some users of each colour. Red: Sith Lords and dark side force users, the more life they take the stronger they become. Their passion & hate grow as they kill and they become more powerful. Users; Vader, Sideous, Dooku, etc. Green; Jedi knights who are more force in tune than they are a duellist. Users; Yoda, Luke Skywalker, Jolee Bindo, Qui Gon Jinn, Luminara Unduli, Kit Fisto, Saesee Tin. Blue; historically a guardians sword, a Jedi whose duel ability outweighs their force connection. Users; Obi Wan, Anakin Skywalker, Shaak Ti, Kyle Katarn, Agen Kolar. Purple; not designated to a specific side of the force, but more to a form of combat. (Form VII) to be precise. There are two types of form VII. (Vaapad & Juyo). These users are usually extremely powerful in direct combat and are some of the most feared duellists in the galaxy. Notable users; Mace Windu, Darth Revan & the scariest prospect of Darth Traya who used to sit and meditate whilst duelling and control 3 of her amethyst lightsabers simultaneously whilst using the force. Yellow; Jedi only & usually the colour of a temple guard. They protect the Jedi temple on coruscant. Notable users; Bastilla Shan, Ahsoka Tano. White: One of the rarest & Jedi only. The only way a Jedi can obtain a white saber is for a Jedi to use the force so strongly that they can effectively bleed out the hate of a red sabre which the dark side has corrupted. Notable users; Ahsoka Tano, Roan Fel, Antares Draco. Black; an ancient lightsaber used as a powerful symbol of leadership to Mandalorians. There is only one of these and it was used by Tarre Vizsla.

Liam Neeson's character was a bit of a rebel. He once sat on the Jedi Council with Yoda and Sam Jackson. He disagreed with many of the Jedi's ideas, and so resigned his position. You will come to find that those very ideas contributed heavily to Anakin's fall. Many people believe if Qui-Gon had survived and trained Anakin he would not have turned. Obi-Wan was a great master and Qui-Gon trained him in the old ways (hence his Jedi name of Obi-Wan like Qui-Gon), but he was not ready for a student like Anakin.

I really don't think Anakin's mum was acted badly. She lived a life of 40 to 50 years in slavery, she's used to blending in the background and disregarding her own feelings, and she says the Republic doesn't even exist on Tatooine and that nobody ever helps each other. She comes across as a sad person resigned to her fate, whose only joy is her son's well-being. And on top of that, we only get to see how she behaves in front of complete strangers she didn't even expect in her house. So I would find the acting bad if she came across as warm and expressive, to be honest.

The background music during the lightsaber fight is called "Duel of the Fates." It has this name because they were fighting for Anakin's SOUL. George Lucas's idea was that QuiGon, as a teacher, can guide Anakin away from the Dark Side and towards the light but WITHOUT QuiGon, Anakin's fate is more uncertain.

Midichlorians are basically mitochondria in Star Wars. Ahmed Best was the motion capture (and voice) actor for Jar-Jar. He got a LOT of hate for the role. Since then, the fans have come around, and Best got a big redemption in the recent season of The Mandalorian. But... you need to see Episode III first, to understand Best's role in that show.

The qui-gon/obi wan master/apprentice relationship is probably my favorite thing in the whole Star Wars franchise. You picked up a lot of their dynamic in the jar jar trial scene. I adore them and really wished they could make a series for obi wan’s apprenticeship before PM. I also find this movie utterly heart breaking for dear obi wan, because of the trauma inflicted on him over the course of just a few days. A little background for added heart break, Qui gon never wanted obi wan and denied him as an apprentice, (Jedi apprentice series) and obiwan actually nearly aged out of being a Jedi had certain events not drawn him and qui gon together in the end. Now here at the end of his apprenticeship qui gon quite literally intended to throw obi wan into the knights trials with out any previous inclination that he though obiwan was ready, so he could take anakin and then with his dying breath only spoke of anakin. Then by the end of movie three obiwan has, in his mind, failed his masters dying wish. That poor poor man. Also the previous mention of Yoda training obi wan is not entirely correct. Yoda did train younglings but not obi wan exclusively. The actual lineage is Yoda>Count Doku>QuiGon>Obiwan>Anakin

I saw this in the theater in 1999, and I came away with mixed feelings. I slipped in and out of being a straight up hater of the film for over a decade. However, in the past 8 years, I've grown to LOVE this movie. Weirdly, I love it as much as I love the originals. I think this newfound love for me is that I finally understand what George Lucas was trying to accomplish with the prequel trilogy. He had so many detractors back then (myself included). It must've been a lonely time for him. Also, the sequel trilogy is somewhat aimless which showed just how interesting the prequels are in comparison. All this to say that the prequels (especially "Episode 1") remind me of a time in my life that was simpler. I miss it dearly.

The different colors do have meanings, and there's more than the main three. Blue: Generally associated with a focus on Dueling skill Green: Signifies a finer connection with the force Yellow: Used by Jedi Sentinels who guard the temple Purple: The wielder has an affinity for aspects of both the light and dark side, but holds them in balance. Orange: Similar to purple, but holds no real allegiance to the light or the dark. Red: it's the mark of the sith. Any lightsaber can become red. The power source of the sabers are Kyber crystals, which are somewhat alive. Hurting the crystal makes it "bleed" turning the blade red. White: these are rare, and are the result of healing a bleeding Kyber crystal.

I absolutely love how observant you are. I normally dislike release order watches because not everyone follows, likely cause its a dated movie; however, you followed so well that your reaction to RotJ was similar to those who watch in chronological order. It takes most people to watch chronological to be so emotionally invested in Anakin to tear up when he returns to the light. You seem to pay attention to everything and because of that I think it probably doesn't matter what order you watch it in. I do recommend the animated and live action series. They dive deeper into the characters we love. You want to see Obiwan's journey? Watch The Clone Wars. He's got more to his story.

I saw where you were asking about lightsaber color meanings, so I will try to give a short and simple explanation to a complicated question. In the legends continuity, green was a Jedi consular who focus on the spiritual aspects of the force. Blue sabers are guardians who focus on the combative aspects of the force. Both blades are created by natural crystals. Red crystals were used by the Sith mostly and usually were synthetic, compromising stability for extra power. I hope this helps!

It may have changed but in the past, to get full pay for a speaking part, the actor or actress had to say 4 or more words Hence the reason you hear things like "Hey! Watch out!" and "Over there, look!" from a minor character. Something to help the plot move along but not enough to obligate giving them the extra pay & their Screen Actors Guild membership card.

When it comes to the color of lightsabers, when the Jedi were active, the different colors did have meaning. Blue indicated a Jedi Guardian, a Jedi who used the Force on a more physical level. Green indicated a Jedi Consular, a Jedi who preferred to reflect on the mysteries of the Force and fight the dark side at its heart. Yellow were Sentinels, who blended the two approaches and largely acted as secret agents through the galaxy

Lightsaber colors do have a meaning but that meaning was created after the facts. It started with blue, but during the OT it was difficult to make them look realistic. When Luke lost his saber and had to make a new one they decided to make it green because it contrasted better against surfaces and looked better out in the bright sun in Tunisia where they shoot everything for Tatooine. The in story explanation is that the Jedi follow differing schools of training Blue = Jedi Guardians, they focus more on proactive actions, conflict resolution and lightsaber fighting and mastering the different lightsaber forms. They are the majority of the Jedi. Green = Jedi Consulars, they focus more on studying the force itself. They train negotiating skills and a deeper use of the force. A Jedi Consular is a Jedi more devoted to the mental aspects of the Force than lightsaber combat. They are usualy older members of the order that have grown out of their more active phase and wish to understand the deeper mysteries of the force. Yellow = Jedi Sentinels. They serve as guardians of the jedi temple and are rarely seen in other instances.
@MrZackavelli

That's not quite accurate. All Jedi study and specialize in negotiation. Blues just specialize in lightsaber technique, greens specialize more in force powers.
@johantolli372
@johantolli372 Жыл бұрын
@@MrZackavelli I did say focus more. Most Jedi were pretty competent in all schools of training ofcourse. A Consular could ofcourse fight pretty well and a Guardian could negotiate. And Obi-Wan stays behind on the ship to a) help with repairs and b) because they don't want to attract too much attention to themselves.
