From the opening crawl to the final credits, I'm experiencing this classic movie experience for the first time. Let me know what you think in the comments!
ABOUT STAR WARS EPISODE V: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (1980)
The Empire Strikes Back (also known as Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back) is a 1980 American epic space opera film directed by Irvin Kershner from a screenplay by Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan, based on a story by George Lucas. The sequel to Star Wars (1977),[b] it is the second film in the Star Wars film series and the fifth chronological chapter of the "Skywalker Saga". Set three years after the events of Star Wars, the film recounts the battle between the malevolent Galactic Empire, led by the Emperor, and the Rebel Alliance, led by Princess Leia. Luke Skywalker trains to master the Force so he can confront the powerful Sith lord, Darth Vader.

Yes. While it WILL create "spoilers" for the Prequels, that IS how we experienced them growing up, and as much as George Lucas wants the story told in timeline order, the Original Trilogy should be watched in it's completion first. From there, THEN you watch everything in chronological order. Episode I, Episode II, The Clone Wars (animated series), Episode III, Solo, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, Rebels (animated series), Rogue One, Episode IV, Episode V, Episode VI, The Mandalorian (seasons 1 & 2), The Book of Boba Fett, The Mandalorian (season 3), Ahsoka (which should be out by the time you get this far), Episode VII, Episode VIII, Episode IX. And yes, watch the Sequel Trilogy, and make up your own mind about them. They've grown on me over the years.... but I admit, I wasn't very impressed with them on first watch.

To clarify, no the Emperor and Vader are not Jedi, but they can use the Force. Jedi is actually a group of people who follow specific teachings about the Force. Teachings that the Emperor and Vader "disagree" with (to put it mildly). You'll find out more about them in the prequels.

@@yasarekin To be fair the Warrior Monk character type is very common in the source material Lucas drew from and was a huge movie trope in the 70s snd 80s. Chuck Norris played it over and over. Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Carradine, Eastwood. All used it. Most of the failings in the Jedi were in the last century or two before the rise of the Empire, as the Jedi moved from being mediators to de facto military. The Sith are never truly honest, even with one another. Even here, the Emperor and Vader lie to each other...they intend to turn Luke, in that they are honest, but they both plan to use him against the other.

With no internet or any of the technology we take for granted today. Sure, long distance calling existed, but you paid for EVERY call. Fandom was torn pretty much down the middle in regards to Darth Vader until Return of the Jedi. While in many ways it was frustrating, it was also awesome. Empire Strikes Back elevated Star Wars to a new level. Only the willfully cynical or arrogant mocked fans. Everyone wanted to know. By the way, one of the biggest theories at the time of Darth Vader's identity was that he was J. R. Ewing. You would have to have been there to understand the reference and how big both cultural moments were. :P

Mark Hamill was in a bad car accident between the first movie and this one and smashed up his face pretty good. I’m barely 10 minutes in, and I’m so impressed with how analytical you are with this movie. You’re very quick to pick up in the fact that Leia is the kind of character that would struggle to be open about her feelings, she’s young and running a rebellion, relationships are probably not in her wheelhouse. Same thing with Han being irritated with her, but then also being stressed about his bounty, then he hears about Luke, and gets more stressed. It’s awesome that you’re giving it so much thought, it shows that you’re actually invested in the universe.

The "officers who let it happen" didn't let it happen. Literally not 1 part of the bridge crew was to blame. As far as I can tell, they did everything in their power to make Vader's plan work. The trap Vader himself had set was played out perfectly. Luke was a second away from getting the Han Solo treatment. In the time it took Vader to turn his head and flip the switch, Luke was leaping right back out of that carbon freezer. That should have been the end of the movie, right there. Remember, Lando had the Falcon's hyperdrive repaired. And at some point after that, the Imperials went aboard and deactivated it. And they deactivated it for this very reason. So that if Luke somehow managed to get out of Vader's trap, Vader could simply scoop up the Falcon once they picked up Luke, send in a boarding party, and capture everyone all over again with a bunch of stun blasts. The 1 thing that no one could have accounted for was someone being on the Falcon looking at the hyperdrive in the whole commotion and recognising the difference between it not working and it being turned off.

You noted the offscreen development everyone’s undergone. Star Wars was fashioned off of the sci fi adventure serials that George Lucas watched in his youth. Back then, if you missed an episode, that was it, as there was no recording or reruns (and in some cases this was permanent, as film stock was expensive, and the tapes would get wiped for reuse). Lucas wanted to recreate the feeling of walking into the middle of an ongoing story having missed last week’s episode, with only a brief recap to fill you in. And it’s these gaps that have proven fertile ground for the tv shows, comics and novels to explore. But of course, the serial format means that we’re left on a dastardly cliffhanger! Will our band of heroes ever find Han? Will Luke fall prey to the same temptations that led his father astray? Will Kim encounter a Star Wars character that she’s incapable of simping for? Tune in next week to find out! Same Star time! Same Wars Channel!

The best movie of the saga, and the one with the fewest/best edits for the 1997-2012 "Special Editions" The Hoth scenes were filmed near Trondheim, Norway. In fact, the scene where Luke sees Ben's ghost was right outside their hotel in a blizzard. Members of the Norwegian Home Guard were extras in the Battle for Hoth. The wampa attack was written in to explain Mark Hamill's facial reconstructive surgery he had following a car crash. The Emperor and Vader aren't Jedi, they're Sith. You'll learn more about them in the Prequels. One of the better Special Edition changes was removing walls to make Cloud City look less cramped. Harrison Ford ad libbed "I know" because his original line didn't seem to fit Han's character. The only people who knew about The Big Reveal™️ before release were George Lucas, director Irvin Kerschner, screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan, Mark Hamill, and Vader voice actor James Earl Jones.
@cuddlestsq2730

Some slight corrections; Finse, where the Hoth scenes were filmed, is in Western Norway, not near Trondheim. Finse is far closer to Bergen. And the extras were mountain rescue skiers. It is possible there were members of the Homeguard, but they would not have been extras in their capacity as such, but rather of the Norwegian Red Cross, but some were just hired extras.

I love how insightful you are with these movies. Noticing things like Vader torturing Han only to get Luke to sense it and come to Cloud City to be the hero. Or making the connection that Yoda was testing Luke right before Yoda drops the act. You also have some very fun theories about the characters and where the story might go. Btw, yes it was indeed a pressurized meditation chamber that Vader was sitting in. It imitates the pressure his suit generates and thus allows him to take off his mask and breath without the constant noice the pressurized helmet makes. It is the same voice actor for Vader, James Earl Jones. The way his voice got modulated simply was more refined in this movie, lending a more crisp voice with a deeper bass than in ANH. This time the lightsaber duel is much more engaging because they changed how they created the lightsaber effect. Instead using a spinning rod attached to the saber habdles which was covered with reflective material to give off a glow through the camera lense, they used metal rods which were quite literally cut out of the film. The sfx artists then proceeded to shine a light behind the film which made the cut out area glow white. Afterwards the same rotoscoping technique was used as in A New Hope to give the lightsabers their colours. This allowed for more durable and more easily replacable lightsaber fighting props, and yes the actors did indeed break the lightsaber props on occasion during the fight choreography.

I enjoy your reactions so far :) Regarding the cave scene, when Luke asks "What will I find?", Yoda answers "Only what you take with you". The cave is strong in the Dark Side of the Force and basically it shows Luke a few things: 1. It shows him what obsesses him (his hatred for Darth Vader) 2. After he decapitates Vader in his vision, it shows him that lashing out in hatred and anger will turn him into what he hates the most and cause him to fall to the Dark Side 3. It foreshadows the relation between Luke and Vader. Another point I wish to make : Not enough credit is given to Vader's understanding and mastery of the Force. When Luke had a vision of Han and Leia's misfortunes on Bespin, it was the future he saw. Vader purposefully made Han and Leia suffer, going as far as torturing Han to use them as bait to draw Luke to him. This means he knew, as a Force user, that due to their relationship, their suffering would cause a ripple in the Force that Luke would sense in the past and come to rescue them. Hence Obi Wan saying "It is you and your abilities the Emperor wants. That's why your friends are made to suffer." Vader had the mindfulness and understanding of how the Force works to plan actions that would have effects in the past and shape the present to his designs. This is also why Obi-Wan and Yoda told him not to go (not play into Vader's hand), and the story proves them right : Luke does not help Leia and the gang at all. They escape all on their own. On the contrary, they end up having to rescue *him*.

James Earl Jones was the voice of Darth Vader for all 3 films. In Star Wars, he’s louder, more aggressive. Here, in “Empire”, Jones does tone it down a bit, but he is written to be unpredictable, more dangerous, and the fact he’s “quieter” for lack of a better term actually makes him more menacing. A great villain usually never is completely crazy and unhinged. Once you show them your top, you’ve got no place else to go. Vader feels more dangerous in this one. Plus, the sound quality is better in this film, so his voice is clearer. The darker cinematography also enhances the bleaker tone of this film. Also, people have noticed Mark Hamill’s face looks different from the first one. The scars are real. After Star Wars cane out, he was in a bad car accident and needed facial reconstruction surgery. So they made the Yeti scene to explain the scars!

Vader vs Luke is my favorite lightsaber duel! Luke thinks Vader killed his dad, because that's what Obi-Wan told him. When Vader cuts off Luke's hand and says the iconic line: "No, I am your father!" It was a huge shocker back in 1980. I was only 3 years old at the time of it's release(I'm 46, but I'm thinking I'm still older than you.) so I saw A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi on VHS as a older child. Kim, you never having seen the "originals" until now(even though you seem to know that Vader is Luke's dad before you saw The Empire Strike) I love your reactions! You are simping for Han and Luke so much! I love it! You are experiencing these for the first time as an adult! That must be so amazing. I was a child having watched these, and tried to understand what about the Jedi and them having used the Force made it and them so special. Obi-Wan and Yoda having been Jedi; their whole order was killed some 20 years earlier during what was called "Order 66". But you'll have to wait until you watch Episode 3:Revenge Of The Sith to see that, but start with Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, and Episode 2: Attack Of the Clones after that, then watch Episode 3. You'll see what the Jedi Order was all about and their roles in "The Clone War". Great job with editing and I like all your comments too!

It was amazing seeing it in the Movie Theatre and everyone gasped when Darth Vader told Luke who he was, In the scene where Han Solo says I know to Princess Leia after she said I Love You was improvised. Han was supposed to Say He Loved her back. Harrison ford when he tried several unsuccessful takes just said I know during a Take. they kept filming. Afterwards Harrison ford explained to George Lucas that I know would be something Han would say. George Lucas agreed. he let them improvise as needed.

Once again, I enjoyed your take on doing a reaction. You've continued to understand and get the series as it was. As a Gen-Xer who grew up watching these films, starting with the A New Hope, in 1977 in the theaters as a young kid, I'm glad that you're experiencing this odyssey as we did...in theatrical release order. With that said, don't let the detractors shy you away from The Sequel Trilogy. Be as open-minded as a Jedi, and judge it for yourself. You've started this journey, and in doing so don't rob yourself of seeing it to it's conclusion. Some people are strongly against it. I, for one, hope that that you finish it. This Trilogy, followed by the Prequels, and then the Sequels (with the stand-alones mixed in), should all be part of your viewing so as to complete the journey into the theatrical releases of the Skywalker Saga. After that, as I mentioned in my prior review, don't forget to swing back into the Animated and Live-Action series that help fill in the stories, add context, and continue to evolve this lush galaxy. Keep up the great work. I look forward to your review of Return of the Jedi...and beyond.

Just a little trivia. The scene after Luke gets away from the snow creature with him stumbling in the blizzard was actually shot outside the hotel the cast and crew were staying at. If you ask me, the sequels aren't that bad individually, the problem is that nobody planned ahead when making them, as opposed to the OG and the prequels. With those two, Lucas had a very good idea of what he wanted to make from the very beginning, but for the sequels, all his ideas were tossed aside and they made everything up as they went along.

And I actually think that the prequels suffered from forced plot direction.

The reason Luke sensed his friends in trouble was the Force echo that Vader was creating. He didn't know where Luke was, therefore bring Luke out of hiding. Luke senses his friends are in trouble, and flies off to help them, without complete training and get his ass handed to him.

She put it in her biography before she died. She got an ok from him to put it in there. 5. Hans', "I know" was ad lib and required a new script to be written in the next movie. 6.
