Harrison Ford said it best decades ago: "George, you can write this shit... but you can't read it". Unfortunately no one was there to stand up to George that time around. If he had the humility to give those scripts the Stoppard treatment all 3 of the prequels could have been timeless classics.

I think that is what bothers me. The ideas are good and if he gave it to some writers and a couple good directors, these would have been amazing. The ideas were good. The potential was there for mass audience greatness. Something all age groups could enjoy. But no. It's indescribably frustrating. I am saying as a person who has never been a Star Wars fan, but I see the potential for greatness the prequels could have been. So disappointing. I think the prequels are a good example of how previous success and believing your own hype, can be a persons downfall. :(

I bet Lucas may have even listened to the critiques, but from all I've ever read on the subject he was treated every step of the way to an endless choir of 'yes'. Apparently all those people forgot that while Lucas IS a talented filmmaker, he got 'by with a little help from his friends' to get to where he was.

The entire "mystery" behind the clone army in this film could have been solved in 5 minutes, but Lucas wrote every character as lumps of partially dried clay so they were too stupid to use basic deductive reasoning to figure out that Palpatine was the most obvious suspect. You don't need to worry about the diminished ability to use the Force (and they never explained why it's diminished). Just use your brains!

Best fight in the prequels was Obi Wan and Jango. There was a realism coupled with urgency that is nonexistent in all the superman saber fights. This was two guys throwing down, legitimately fighting, it was fun even. There's a spontaneity to it, whereas there's a real tedious inevitability about the saber fights. 'oh, it's the end of the movie, I better put characters together to have a swordfight.'

Just getting around to to Watching this review. Alonzo, A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, protocol Droids and R2 units were everywhere, and pretty generic. Additionally, C3PO was a different color in episode episode four. There is no reason to assume Lars would recognize this Droid as being the exact same one from decades earlier. No more than you would distinguish one laptop of the same model from another.

I have to comment only on one supposed plot hole mentioned by Alonso about Uncle Owen not noticing they were C3PO and R2D2. . . . unless I'm mistaken . . . aren't R2 units mass produced? Sure C3PO is rather uniquely colored but I think even that model of droid exists all over the galaxy (it's just stupid that Vader created him as a child).

I see Alonso's point, but I have to defend Uncle Owen a little bit, here. The time span between "Clones" and "Star Wars" -- no, I will NOT call it "A New Hope" and no one can make me -- is about 25 years. Droids in the Star Wars universe are like pets in our world. They are ubiquitous. Would anyone here remember somebody's pet dog 25 years later? (Assuming that dogs lived that long, of course.) I doubt it. Added to this is the fact that there is a lot of stress going on in the Skywalker household: Shmi's missing and turns up dead; Owen's father ends up crippled. In the middle of all that, Owen is supposed to remember two droids two and a half decades later? Come on. That's putting a lot on poor, old O's shoulders. He's a moisture farmer, not a champion mnemonic.

I am eager to see Ben's review of ep 7.I am non fan of this series. I saw 4, 5 and 6 as a child and the art design just did not appeal to me. But even then some of the story grabbed me. As an adult I can admit the story is ok/good.The prequels, I genuinely felt sorry for the poor actors. I really want episode 7 to be good, but considering my track record with the franchise, I am only a little optimistic. If Ben likes ep 7 I know it can appeal to non fans and not just the fan base.

This is likely my preferred of the prequels. It is still a mess, but I like more parts of this one and it seems less clunky plot wise. I hate the droid factory scene with a passion and watching it feels like I'm playing a video gam. R2 and 3PO are just too silly. Other than that one, the action scenes were good. Like the first trilogy, the middle one is the best of the three.

Personally, I loved the Kenobi & the Alien Water World arc, with him getting the stormy planet with the tall 'gray' aliens that seem to have been expecting him (wtf?) and are happy to report that the clone army he/the council orderered is still totally on schedule ("Clone Army!? We didn't order any Clo- OH YEAH, Clone Army, absolutely, exactly why I'm here. ... Hey, uh, do you guys take Jedi Credit cards?" The big issue there is that there really wasn't anything to the conspiracy, it was just dumb and never explained where it came from. So, fuck.

The storm and gray colors are intentional - to signal the Jedi are becoming corrupt. The conspiracy IS explained but you have to pay close attention. Phantom Menace was a snoozefest but Attack of the CLones was the worst film for the whole Star Wars franchise because it ruined so many things about that universe. It made the Jedi even more weirdly cultish and mind-numbingly stupid to miss the obvious right in front of them. It ruined the Clone Wars. When it was mentioned in New Hope it sounded interesting and got the imagination burning. Here the war is a ridiculous farce which would have been ok if that had been the point. Instead of the epic war many of us imagined it was it became a war of toys of two sides whose actions had no consequences. If the Seperatists win, it doesn't matter because Palpatine is in control of them. If the Republic wins, it doesn't matter because Palpatine is in control of them and he so obviously was behind the creation of the clones. There was no urgency in this war of disposable droids and clones who are actually both on the same side. This is why I could never get into the cartoon series no matter how good people said it was because the whole premise is flawed. The yoda fight scene was howlingly bad and so out of character but that aside it did not make him a badass. In fact none of the lightsaber fights made the Jedi look good. In Phantom it was two Jedi against one Sith and the sith managed to kill one of them. In AOTC Dooku fights off Anakin and Obiwan injurying both of them then fights Yoda to a standstill before escaping which is what he wanted to do in the first place so technically he won. In ROTS again 2 against 1 and Dooku knocks out Obiwan completely. Later Palpatine wipes out 3 Jedi in one minute and he also fights Yoda to a standstill causing Yoda to flee so technically he won that duel. Yoda had two duels and basically lost them so why have them at all which just took away from his character and his whole message in ESB? And of course it ruined Darth Vader. No way did that whiny emo creepy stalker become the badass that was Darth Vader. Anakin should have been a cocky heroic type whom people actually liked but lets his pride and anger get the best of him so when he falls to the Dark Side it's a tragedy.

I don't care what anyone else says: this is the absolute bottom of the barrel. Say what you will about The Phantom Menace. You had Darth Maul, a cool lightsaber fight, a kind of cool pod race, and a good soundtrack. AOTC has none of that and the stuff that is done wrong in Phantom Menace (poor dialogue, bad humor, boring and frustrating scenes, bad and stiff acting, Broken writing and an uninteresting plot) is just done 10 times WORSE! Seriously it makes Terminator Genysis look like Terminator 2: Judgement day.
