Think of the force as people think about God irl. It’s something almost everyone has heard about to the point that it is a part of our regular vocabulary. In Star Wars most people have heard of the force but a lot don’t believe in it. There are of course those who do but the majority of people don’t or have no idea it’s more than just part of a saying. Irl people say “thank god” and “oh my god” and in Star Wars they say “thank the force” and “may the force be with you”. It’s not so much a lost religion, it’s more like most of the Star Wars galaxy are atheists.

It is pretty sad how one of the biggest plot twists in cinema became such a pop culture thing because every just HAD to start saying it. I would have loved to seen Empire Strikes Back in theaters just to hear the father reveal and truly be shocked by it.

I was there. I didn't know. And it was one of the first showings. It wasn't the first WEEK of release. But it might've been the second - and I hadn't talked to anyone who'd seen it yet. There'd been your usual crowd murmers and cheers and scattered commentary through the movie - we were all having a good time. But the TENSION - we could see Luke was LOSING that fight. And then Darth Vader takes that hit on his shoulder - and it's clear he's been HOLDING BACK and he loses his restraint just GOES IN and takes Luke's HAND. Gasps all around. But then the BIG REVEAL. "NO. I am your father!" More than half the audience is stunned into silence. The other half is - well they're kind of echoing Luke - "No WAY!" But not that many. Dude - you have NO IDEA of how that moment HIT HARD. I think most believed it was true. Some didn't. But the two biggest cliffhangers - "Was Vader telling the truth? And if he was - did Obi-Wan lie?" -and- "What's going to happen to Han?" That was all that fans could talk about for THREE YEARS. We had to wait THREE YEARS for resolution! ("in the snow... uphill... BOTH WAYS... you damn kids don't know how good you have it.... grumble grumble... :D )

@@logandarklighter I entered the cinema that summer as an ordinary 10-year old, brimming over with excitement (and no little disbelief) that Lucas had made ANOTHER movie set in that galaxy that had been the focus of much of my waking life in the past three years. I left it a very dazed and subdued young man. My moral universe had been turned over like the S.S. Poseidon, all its neatness and sureties jarred loose and tumbling in odd directions like her passengers. Heroes were NEVER maimed! Deep-dyed villains were never their RELATIVES! And worst of all, stories were never DEFERRED for whole years at a time! You had two-part episodes of television shows that were agony enough to await resolution till next week, but THIS was in my view inconceivable, and insupportable. (I was familiar with series of fiction books, mostly from Father's shelves, but no real appreciation of how long it took each volume to be written and published.) In its five theatrical releases over the seven years before it was finally broadcast on television, I saw what was later dubbed Episode IV some sixteen times, by my estimation. I viewed Episode V once - and once only - before its VHS release. I would never return for a second viewing, no matter how my relatives cajoled. At this remove, I do believe the shock was equal to that acquired by viewing a violent death before your eyes. And something had indeed died that day - a rather large chunk of my innocence. Even so, I today thank God that I lost it through a mere entertainment and not through any experience in real life. I have no recollection of recalling these feelings, in these words, to anyone else. I have never spoken of them until just now. 🙁 😕 🙂

The special effects do seem dated (even though you’re watching the Special Edition that was released in 1997). However, you have to keep in mind that before this movie, special effects were nowhere near this level. For a simple comparison, watch the sci-fi movie “Logan’s Run”, which was released just one year prior to Star Wars. George Lucas created Industrial Light and Magic to push the boundaries and give this movie the effects Lucas wanted. ILM and George Lucas revolutionized modern movie special effects, which is why Star Wars became the huge phenomenon it is.

This movie wasn’t actually made with the expectation of sequels. Everyone thought they were just making a goofy space adventure flick for kids, and director George Lucas thought he just got a lucky break to be able to make it. He intended the original 3 to be one whole story but it was just too big, so he picked portions that could be made as a self contained film.

One other thing I'll add is that the movie is a complete story because it was originally just "Star Wars" as a standalone movie. The work on the original Star Wars movies is what laid the foundation for Photoshop and modern video/image manipulation. They were WAY ahead of their time. Sure, it seems "dated" now, but you have to remember that the vast majority of these effects are literally 40 years old. And fuckit, some of the effects still hold up, or even surpass, some modern movies. A trendsetter if there ever was one.

The Star Destroyer that chased Leia's blockade runner was called "The Devistator" Leia's blockade Runner was called "The Tantive IV" A Star Destroyer is 1 mile in length The Death Star was 120 kilometers in Diameter The Jawa's ginat droid transport is called "The Sandcrawler" Grand Moff Tarkin has one of the highest ranks of the Imperial Military. Tarkin's first name is "Wilhuff" The First Death Star actually had a throne room for Palpatine, he never actually had time to use it. General Tagge (That one Officer who had a complete red Medel badge and had what could only be a VERY bad haircut) was one of the few who survived the Destruction of the first Death Star by being sent to overlook the scout operation to investigate Datooine, the planet that Princess Leia claimed the Rebel base was on. Alderaan had a population of 2.5 Billion beings Captain Antilles' (The dude Vader Choked) family, unfortunately lived on Alderaan Bail Organa (Leia's adopted father) also, unfortunately lived on Alderaan Palpatine was on Coruscant during the events of Episode IV and V. The First Death Star had a population of roughly 265,000 The Millennium Falcon was docked in Docking Bay 327 on the Death Star. The actor who played Uncle Owen lived from 1916-2016 Luke's X-wing was Red 5 Death Vader's personal Tie fight was too expensive for the Empire to mass produce, Vader Tie Fighter's full name is "Tie Fight Advanced Prototype ×1"

It's so fun to see people get excited and remember how good this first move is - how well it's paced and introduces all the characters and the way it throws you into the worldbuilding without a lot of exposition. That said, I can't believe you just talked through the binary sunset scene, lol. That's some of the best music in cinema. And the credits are always worth watching just to enjoy the suites of Wiliams's work. I was 14 when the special editions came out, so that is actually when I first saw it because my mom (who did see the original in the theaters - and she says it really can't be overstated how incredible that opening scene is from 1977 standards) wanted me to see it in the theaters. I was skeptical because it looked like a boring adventure movie to me but I loved it (although it was when I saw Empire that I got really addicted to the franchise). And here I am commenting on KZbin videos about it :)

The thing to remember about this movie is that it necessarily had to be released as a one and done with no expectation that there would be more. That explains why Episode 4 is a fairly self-contained movie. Sure, Lucas wanted to make more, but he could only hope to make enough of a profit to cover production costs. Everyone was unprepared at how this thing took off and became what it was.

@logandarklighter
@logandarklighter 3 жыл бұрын
No - he IS upset about his aunt and uncle. He's devastated about it. But you have to get all of that from that one scene at the homestead (with the burnt skeletons... man - how did THAT make it in?) And watch Luke's reaction. I think Hamill nailed it there and with Obi-Wan. I think the key is the timing - Luke is reacting to the aftermath of the homestead being burned. He didn't see it as it happened. Obi-Wan was cut down right in FRONT of him. And I think it's the combination of holding in his feelings about his Aunt and Uncle's deaths AND watching Obi-wan being taken out by Darth Vader that uncorks him. It's all too much AT THE MOMENT. But then the moment passes, and he and Han get on with the defense against the Tie-fighters. He does a LOT of growing up in this film. And the most telling thing is that in both cases, he grieves, but then moves on when necessary and does what needs to be done. It's a common enough thing to say - but it applies here: Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is being scared to death but doing what needs to be done anyway in spite of it. And that's why Luke is a hero.

When this movie was made, Luke's father and Darth Vader were meant to be separate people. It's retconned in Empire Strikes Back, which is why some of the dialog here doesn't make a lot of sense. Same with Luke & Leia being brother and sister, that's also not intended when Episode IV was made.

"May the Force be With You", means good luck. Most people do not equate the saying with the Jedi. Even when the Jedi were around. Most people had never seen or heard much of the Jedi. So the saying has never had any more meaning than good luck, exceot to those familiar with force users.

1. When this came out it changed so much about how movies were made. It caught everyone's attention. 2. The reason Lucas started with this episode was because he knew we didn't have the technology to justify starting from the beginning and producing quality product. CGI was still 25ish years away. 3. The footage of Jabba the Hut was added after the original release during the remake years later. 4. Sir Alec Guinness didn't want to play Obi-wan because he thought it was silly and below him. 5. Learning things as time went by was better because we didn't have the meme's to look back on. The thing is we had to wait for the next episodes to come out.

How I wish I could get my hands on the pre-Special Edition trilogy without all the CGI ad ons. Some of these CGI ad ons and sound effect changes take away from the movie instead of adding to it.

I didn’t see any comment about “Han shot first”, so I’ll make one. Originally, Han blasted Greedo without Greedo getting a shot off. IT WAS PERFECT! Han knew what was coming and proactively dealt with it like the badass he was capable of being. It was perfect for his character, the setting (just like a Western saloon scene) and the beginning of his character arc. Related perfectly to his apology about the mess. Folks apparently felt he had to have been shot at first to have been justified. Which made it ridiculous. An experienced bounty hunter running on at the mouth, overconfident, is way more believable than missing a shot across a table after already having a bead on his target. One of many ways they made it worse with edits.

Back in 1977, before they published all the retroactive explanations for what we had seen, it just came across as a stroke of luck for the storyline. I have to complain that if what flickers on the screen cannot stand on its own, somebody (e.g., the director and editors) has failed.

The Sequels ruined the release dates: Classics: Star Wars- 1977 Empire Strikes Back- 1980 Return of the Jedi- 1983 Prequels: Phantom Menace- 1999 Attacks of the Clones- 2002 Revenge of the Sith- 2005 And maybe Clone Wars- 2008 Each movie (except the time between the classics and prequels) was released 3 years apart from the each other. Sequels: Force Awakens- 2015 Rogue One- 2016 Last Jedi- 2017 Solo- 2018 Rise of Skywalker- 2019 They made 5 sequels which were 1 year apart

4, 5, and 6 are the best Star Wars movies. Rogue One is also a good one. It's set just before 4, and shows how the rebels stole the plans for the Death Star. 1, 2, and 3 are the prequels, and show how Anakin turns to the dark side. I don't like any of those sequels by Disney. Instead of advancing the story, Disney just dials it back to make money.

@@snowgrave2475 they made Rogue One. While not amazing, it was a decent effort by Disney. Shows they know how to pay homage to the original fans. Its a shame they are only making the one film. They could probably do more. Kathleen Kennedy is showing tons of promise. She obviously knows what the fans want.
@snowgrave2475
@snowgrave2475 3 жыл бұрын
@@Biggiiful she knows what the fans want, yet doesnt give it to them. Need i remind of the whole 'russian troll bots review bombing the last jedi' fiasco that flooded the internet because they couldnt handle any criticism, and couldnt believe actual star wars fans dislike their movies. If i remember right, also, if you take the box offices of the sequels, rogue 1, and Solo; Disney has not made a penny in profits off of them, and i'll explain below, using rounded numbers for ease: Disney bought SW for 4.7B The SW land theme parks cost another 1B in research and development and building 500M - force awakens budget and marketing, estimated 600M - last jedi budget and marketing, est. 500M - rise of budget and marketing, est. 500M - Solo budget and marketing, est. 400M - Rogue 1 Budget and marketing, est. This adds up to about... 8.2 billion in estimated costs of making and advertizing the movies, and making the theme parks. The total box office for the movies is a good bit under 6 billion USD, and i may be wrong, but thats just the gros amount, not taking out the cut for the theaters, which means its even less, leaving a best case scenario of them being about nearly 3 billion less than what they've spent on making just that alone, and Kathleen is throwing everything out and seeing what's sticking.
