True, though in the book, Chani also wears a kerchief on her arm when she's mourning the death of her father Liet-Kynes. So the significance of moving a symbol of love to a mourning position should be obvious enough - to the people who have read the book anyway. I like the little winks meant for the readers that have been thrown in there, here and there.

Well yeah in the book she does, this movie is obviously going for a different take though. They will probably end up reconciling in some way in Dune 3 since Chani has to give birth to Leto II, but the movie didn’t leave off in a place where Chani is his willing concubine lol. She was obviously angry and heartbroken, and she was running away and not embarking on the Jihad at Paul’s side like in the book.

@@steelnation5110 Yes. I suspect Denis had some sort of resolution in mind for that issue in 3 even before he wound up 2. Otherwise he would not have sent Chani off that way. It will be interesting to see how he resolves what is essentially a 3-way relationship.

@@steelnation5110 "the movie didn't leave off in a place where chani is his willing concubine" There's a scene after Paul drinks the poison that perhaps indicates otherwise. The black and white Harkonnen scenes were filmed using infrared cameras. 26:52 The three women Feyd talks to are his cannibalistic concubines called Harpies. They do not appear in the books and are original in Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation. 31:20 Austin kissing Stellan back was actually improvised and Stellan just went with it. Chani was originally more of a background character in the book, but Villeneuve felt that her character would work better if she had a bigger part. I don’t know why, but Zimmer’s score (Kiss the Ring) at 54:09 always give me chills. Denis Villeneuve has said that the 3rd movie will be his last in the Dune universe unless he feels the need to create more.

Fear. Paul is led by fear. Fear of not being able to avenge his father. Fear of losing the few Atreides remaining. Fear of losing his new fremen family. Fear of seeing his apocalyptic visions become true. We SW fans know where this is leading. Now Paul is the leader of a bunch of religious fanatics, and they have nukes. What can go wrong, really? I'm a huge Dune nerd and I loved the movies. Unfortunately, it's not possible to show all the political subtleties, conspirations and "plans within plans" described in the books, but hints are still there for us to understand the underlying Bene gesserit motives, so I'm OK with that. In the books Chani is fully supportive of Paul's increasing fanaticism, so her arc was changed. I'm neither happy nor unhappy with that, I wonder how she will evolve in the next movie. I've no problem with Paul killing the Baron instead of his sister Alia, it feels justified from a revenge point of view. As for thinking that nobody will challenge Paul's power in the future, well...Dune Messiah shows us a very different reality, but I will say no more in order not to spoil. Small but nice detail: Paul looks directly into the nuclear flash when the Shield Wall mountain is destroyed in order to let the worms in. This is not a scenario flaw, Paul now has the powers of a male Bene Gesserit, and supreme control over his body reactions and capacity to handle pain and cell regeneration. Thanks for reacting to this amazing movie!
@johnohrstrom5112
@johnohrstrom5112 Ай бұрын
I also think Paul killing the Barron further shows he's on the dark path. Good change for the purpose of the movie where you just don't have time like the book does. Though Alia mercing him in the book is awesome too. Just not enough time to deal w Alia in the movie.

One maker hook on either "side" allows the rider to guide the worm, by allowing the scales he/she has raised to lower or be pulled open. In this way, a rider can turn the worm. As to getting off, there are several ways. Rotate the worm to the side on which you wish to get off and jump off when a suitable spot is reached. Wait until the worm is breaking through a suitable dune and jump off. Wait until the worm starts to gradually descend and, at a suitable spot, step off. Wait until the worm tires sufficiently and jump/step off. This is all I remember: there are likely other ways.

47:25 The mountain protected the region from the storms and the worms. Blowing it up allowed both to get through (the storm is crucial to the timing of their plan, as it rendered all shields useless, allowing the worms to get through without going into a frenzy and killing each other). Also, the use of atomics on people is a big no-no in this universe. It's punishable by planetary annihilation. Had Paul aimed for the emperor's tent, the Great Houses would have retaliated in kind. In the book the emperor charges Paul with the use of an atomics weapon. Paul's excuse is that it was used against a "natural feature of the desert" that was "in his way" because he was "in a hurry to get to you."

Yes Star Wars was inspired by Dune quite a bit but it also took from numerous other sources as well such as samurai films, Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, spaghetti westerns, Arthurian mythology and many more. So I wouldn't call it just a rip -off. Dune is just a sci-fi point of view of "Lawrence of Arabia".

They took heavy inspiration from each other, I firmly believe without one or the other they wouldnt be as good as they are today, George took inspiration from Frank Herbert’s book in the 60s and then the Dune 80s movie took heavy inspiration from George Lucas 70s Star Wars films and you can continue to see them take inspiration from each other. I love both franchises and so I’m happy to see both these franchises be so successful in today’s media. Saying one is better than the other is pure opinion, but both are essential for each other to exists.

I definitely disagree that Chani is a more complex and interesting character in the movie than the book. I fully understand the necessity to make Chani the voice of opposition when adapting this book into a movie. The book grants the reader access to the consciousness of its characters and through Paul’s consciousness, we experience his conflict with his ascent to power and the upcoming jihad, his attempts at stopping it until he realizes it’s much bigger than him and that he can’t. This kind of complex internalization simply isn’t the domain for cinema. Not fluid cinema anyway. So it’s necessary to bestow this conflict into an external source. And because the only character suitable to impose this upon is Chani, she’s the one who gets fundamentally changed. The movie version of Chani is a complete invention of the filmmakers and does not represent Herbert’s vision in any meaningful way. Again, while I understand that narrative necessity of this action, it comes with the tradeoff of erasing the original purpose of this character. In the book, Chani is Paul’s internal peace. The two of them both lose their fathers to this campaign providing the opportunity for these characters to comfort each other. Chani understands Paul as an outworlder as her dad was also an outworlder and has her outworlder father was in a leadership role within the Fremen, she sees Paul being the rightful man to take that position. Chani and Paul’s relationship is born out of deep empathy in this way. Chani becomes Paul’s ride or die, she too wishes for the freedom of her people, she provides her lover with valued counsel during his times of crisis. She understands the politics of marriage as all Fremen women do. The movie version of this character just has none of this. She’s little more than an avatar to voice Paul’s conflict and I consider this to be a substantial downgrade for her character. She’s vastly less interesting and complex and so is her relationship with her people and her lover. When I hear people say that this adaptation is an improvement to the character, I really think those people don’t know what they’re talking about.

@thss3103 Ай бұрын
Ehh not really… There are a few reasons he actually did it. 1. Paul nukes the shield wall to knock down the mountains so the massive sandstorm can fly in and screw up all the enemy shields - which can’t hold up to all that sand - and so that his forces can ride the sand worms right into downtown and over the enemy armies. 2. He only nuked the Shield Wall m because it’s illegal to nuke direct populations (organic targets is the wording used in the book). And if he nuked the city directly, the entire galaxy and all the great houses would attack him. Despite what Guerney says at the end, not all the great houses are against Paul during the holy war. Some join his side after fighting starts. But if he used nukes against people, they would be obligated and legally bound to oppose him. 3. With the use of the nuked against the shield wall, Paul showed he wasn’t afraid to use them, and with his threat to destroy the Spice fields, he had control of the Spacing Guild and Bene Gesserit, who both need spice to continue their work. He was in complete control.
@chaost4544
@chaost4544 Ай бұрын
He could have nuked the area but that move doesn't carry the same weight as him beating the Emperor's army through his forces. His forces easily annihilating the Sardaukar through hand to hand combat sends a huge message across the galaxy to the other houses; houses who were afraid of the Emperor's Sardaukar. He also needed to keep the Emperor alive.

Everyone seems to be missing the basic trolly problem that this movie laying out. He chooses the path of the Jihad because Chani will die if he doesn't. He literally seizes power, marries Irulan and kicks off the Jihad to protect her, and everyone else he cares about.

But what of all the people who die in the process? What about their loved ones, the ones they wanted to protect? Are Chani and everyone Paul cares about more valuable because he cares for them? Is the resulting death and destruction truly worth it?
@benhmn

That's what makes this story an interesting and compelling tragedy. There is no good path. That being said, the Jihad is going to happen no matter what at this point, and things would go even worse if he died.

Chani in the books was a lot more flat. She was a follower, and her dialogue was boring. In the movie, she was a lot more complex. Like in the end, when Paul said he'd take Irulan, in the movie, Chani was P-I-S-S-E-D which makes sense. In the book, she basically just said: "I understand what you have to do. And if you must, I'm fine, dw bro"

Well, you kind of missed the fact that Paul is unstoppable. He has all the Past and most of the Future under his control. He IS the Emperor, and a whole lot more. The Reverend Mother stated it.... Ultimate Power. And you do not need someone's support if they no longer exist. In the Books. Paul estimates that he and the Fremen obliterate 60 billion people. Did not need their support. Did he? Hopefully someone will be able to make all 6 books into movies. Because the moral of the story is not who gets the power. It is can we as a Race survive someone with all that power.... Or as I like to say.... The bene Gesserit wished for that "Ultimate Power" and to control it. But "be careful what you wish for". That is what Dune is all about. Consequences. Not Power.

This version of Chani isn't better or worse. Her role is completely different, to serve a different purposes. In the book she's not a fighter and is a priestess with more knowledge of how the political affairs work since her father was Liet, so Frank didn't have to spend too much time having her keep up, she already knew Paul had to marry Irulan officially. This version is a fighter with no political knowledge but used as a stop gap for the audience to connect with Frank's main point on Dune, that blinding believing and follow religious and charismatic leaders can lead to devastation.

Wow, the disrespect being shown by you two is truly disappointing. You don't pay attention and you giggled like school children; clearly, you had no intention of actually watching this. Shame really, because Dune is an intricate story weaving politics, religion and cult of personality into an incredible mosaic. Dune Messiah (Dune 3) will be even more complex, perhaps you two should give it a miss.
