How To Drink

Күн бұрын

I'm recreating some of the drinks served at Star War's Galaxy's Edge Oga's Cantina! It's not going to be easy, but never tell me the odds.
Star Wars Galaxy's Edge is now open at both Walt Disney World and Disney Land. By luck I happened to be at Walt Disney World the week after Galaxy's Edge opened and I was thoroughly impressed by Oga's Cantina! It's a fantastic themed environment that really did a great job of capturing the feel of a Star Wars bar or cantina, and the drinks were inventive and fun, and provided awesome presentations. I've chosen four drinks from the menu to recreate in this episode of How to Drink, and task ahead isn't going to be easy. I only have rough ingredient lists to go by, and a single visit to Oga's and my memory of tasting notes I had there. In this episode I may make a misstep or two, and start over to get it right.

I have it and it's an awesome cookbook but the drinks require some special ingredients that need to be ordered. Like Walmart doesn't carry Cotton Candy Monin Syrup lol. The only drink I was really able to make was the Blurggfire which even that one was hard to find because I needed a chili lime mix. According to the Star Wars wiki the Blurggfire is canonically up to interpretation so you don't have to make it exactly like the recipe but it was the easiest of the drinks to make but still semi complicated. The second easiest is the Hyperdrive but that one even requires black cherry puree which isn't easy to come by.

In case you read this - my friend introduced me to a shot called a Green Tea - It's a mix of Irish Whiskey, Peach Snapps, and Sour Mix and somehow when you mix them together it does indeed taste exactly like drinking a sweet green tea. It made me realize there are alot of these weird combinations that make like "magic" shots that don't taste anything like the some of their parts and an episode of them would be fantastic.

What have you tried?? The menu says “Patrón Silver Tequila, Cedilla Açaí Liqueur, Lime Juice, and Pure Cane Sugar topped with Black Salt and Exotic Fruit Purée”. So I’m thinking this is a margarita with the açaí liqueur in place of triplesec. Maybe 2 oz. tequila, 1 oz. açaí liqueur, 1 oz lime juice, 0.25 oz simple syrup, and then mango purée? I haven’t tracked down the açaí liqueur yet but it does appear to be a product on shelves, and black salt isn’t too hard to find.

Oh! I had no idea that the Bespin Fizz and Carbon Freeze got its dried ice from a specific machine. The cantina seems to love using Powerade for its non-alcoholic drinks. Carbon Freeze just looked really cool and tasted nice. My go-to for non-alcoholic has always been the Hyperdrive. Another non-alcoholic Powerade one, basically blue Powerade with crushed ice and a black cherry puree on top, but the drinks themselves are so fascinating that the use of Powerade is excusable. The puree gradually falls through the ice on top and turns the blue drink into a deep purple. It looks good, but it's also very sweet once the puree blends completely (which, for a sugarholic like me, is nice).

The "buz" buttons you used I know as wild chamomile. What I love about it is the psychosomatic of it fresh from the garden, and you only need to think of a fruit, squeeze, and sniff. No matter what you are thinking of, the wild stuff will smell just like what you are thinking. I kinda wonder if that is passed on to the drink?

OK, just mixed up the Slug Slinger. Decent enough as recommended, but a bit too sweet w/out some balance. I'm going to make it again and ad just a bit of lime juice.

DANGIT!!! Right when I'm about to go to work! Well, I'll have to watch this tonight for sure. And to let you know, Greg, you inspired me with the last episode to try making a Naughty Dog at home. I think my girlfriend and I have found a new favorite cocktail to enjoy in the evening after work, you naughty dog, you.

I’ll try what I can from here, but the JetChill is a bit pricey to get for home use. For the Buzz Button foam, you should be able to shortcut by using something like peach syrup, lecithin and Spilanthes extract(made from buzz buttons) and a carb-stone.

I do distinctly remember Powerade having a strawberry lemonade flavor in 2015ish? It might have been the only electrolyte drink that didn't taste like a lead-acid battery. Maybe that's why it sticks in my mind.

The drinks look mighty good, Greg and they are as close as I will ever get to Disney World so thanks for making and sharing! Also, be sure C3PO is switched off next time your 3 year old is piloting. I'm sure she heard C3PO's calculations on successfully navigating an asteroid field and it threw her game off.

They seriously didn't have a Jedi Mind Trick? I've been making those for years. It's basically a hard milkshake. (ironically, I'm lactose intolerant and can't enjoy it myself, but my guests always love it.) Spiced Rum Irish Cream Amaretto Coffee Liqueur Vanilla Ice Cream Milk Whipped Cream (optional) Maraschino Cherries (optional) Blend it up into a milkshake, Garnish with whipped cream and Maraschino Cherries. Slam it down in front of your patron. Make eye-contact. Wave your hand a little and say: "These are not the droids you're looking for".

Dont have a way to tell if my attempt at a Dagobah Slug Slinger using this recipe is authentic or not of course. Compared to the one I had at wdw last month. I finished that one in one sitting, taking my time enjoying the cantina. I dont remember it being quite as strong as this version however. It packs a pretty good punch and I couldnt finish it. Next attempt I will be cutting back on the tequila and see how it works out. With the exception of the ginger syrup, which I had to make myself, it really didnt take any more time to make this than a traditional margarita batch. And if you down a margarita in 10 minutes then you are not taking the time to enjoy it.

It would be hilarious to have an episode on rainwater and grain alcohol from Dr Strangelove. The difficult part would be coming up with an interesting spin off drink since the original would be pretty much flavorless.
