Star Wars is a cultural phenomenon. Anything of that very early era will always be of value. Nostalgia was a huge factor that drove market. Once no one is around to actually be nostalgic, sure, there will be a sharp sell off of personal collections in 10 to 20 years, then the dust will settle. People have been saying the market for vintage Star Wars figures is going to crash for years. The thing is, there are new Star Ward fans every year. My son is in his early 20’s and he and his friends grew up with the Prequels and Clone Wars. They collect the modern stuff but they view the vintage figures as a collector’s right of passage. There are only 102 vintage figures, so collecting a full set is a badge of honor with their generation. And now we have a new generation watching Mandolorian, Bad Batch, etc. Star Wars will never die and vintage Star Wars figures will always be valuable.

It already happened with 60s gi joes. They were worth a fortune until the 2000s, and now you can't give them away. As the generation that grew up with and collected a thing start to age out and sadly die, the demand becomes less, and the bottom absolutely WILL fall out. That said, those who collect as an investment aren't collector's, they are investors, gambling on perpetual nostalgia, and I personally couldn't care less if they lose money on their toys. I collect toys to play with them, and the only value they hold is the price I am willing to pay...

To give you an analogy, vintage baseball cards still sell for top $$$ even though these players played 100 years ago. Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Cy Young, Lou Gehrig, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron cards continue to increase in value despite the fact that collectors like me (GenX) never saw them play. Two reasons: scarcity so they hold their value and they are like a historical artifact. Thats the way Star Wars, Empire and Jedi Vintage figures will always hold their value in future generations.

That’s very surface level analysis. How many of those cards exist? How many collectors are there? How many vintage Star Wars figures exist? How many collectors are there? Time will tell, and I’d love for them to go up in value, but I certainly have low expectations of it happening. 😀

It depends on the type of figure and the rarity. If it was a common figure loose, then of course you'll probably be able to pick it up for cheap. An original 12-back figure mint on the card, well, be prepared to shell out at least $1K for it. Some figures may cost thousands more, like a Princess Leia in her pink-and-red ceremonial gown or a Jawa with a vinyl cape.

Basic supply and demand, demand will drop and vintage supply will be largely the same, so prices will decrease. Unless there is a new generation introduced to (ANY) toyline / franchise demand will die off, you need new TV/Films/toys to keep that demand fresh and high. Evidence of this has been seen in game collecting as well as toy collecting.
@zed000210 ай бұрын
Exactly this. Pointing to some sales, of what look like old items in short supply, isn’t very good analysis. I don’t think people really fathom how many vintage Star Wars figures were produced. Hundreds of millions. There will be a few that will have good value in the future, like red bar R5D4. From what I can tell the majority of figures haven’t even kept up with inflation.

Some of these Vintage Kenner Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi toys and figures as well as other vintage toys from the '70's and '80's will most likely start to degrade and deteriorate and be falling apart even when new in box or packaging then they won't be worth as much if that happens. Some of them have already started doing that since they were not made to last for 40 to 50 years so it's amazing that they're still around but give them another 10 or 20 years and they may be falling apart inside their packaging or boxes. Besides the younger generation probably won't be able to afford them by that time nor will they even care about toys that are not even from their childhood generation.

This was BEFORE the re-release of the movies. So we'd go to the flea market and the guy there had this $2 junk box that he'd keep the worthless figures (he had a bunch of hammerheads and storm troopers and glider riders and Landos, stuff like that, with loose joints and scratched faces). The other stuff, the good stuff, was for "collectors only" and kept on top of his car and looked so awesome to a kid. Keep in mind at that time a lot of these toys weren't even 10 years old but were for some reason seen as precious to boomers like him (so for whatever reason it isn't just Gen x'rs that covet/coveted star wars stuff). We'd also look in the back of newspapers and find the classifieds that sold "STAR WARS" stuff. Looking back the whole thing is pretty weird.

Exactly like superheros especially, and in my opinion animation which is also almost timeless. Of course there’s dated shows, and when certain characters are popular but big stuff like scooby doo, Batman will always be collectible. No matter the era, there will be more popular ones and rare ones for sure, but something’s just always have a timeless dedicated fan base like superheroes, which have been going strong since it’s inception in the 40s. As long as they continue getting adaptations too, cuz those 2 have gotten lots of direct to dvd movies and tv shows. So it’s multi generational. Like figures are cool to collect and I was browsing some and saw a superman from the 1940s. Not my era but it’s a cool novelty and piece of history. Then there were all the others versions, the animated series, Henry Cavill, etc.

You're right, Junkie. Star Wars memorabilia is safe and sound. Especially the Kenner figures. The first reason is because Star Wars is a pop icon of the last four decades. It has ups and downs. Some of the biggest downs were the late 80's. But people were still buying and selling then. There is an will continue to be an audience for it. The other factor is the Kenner toys are safe because they were the last ones that were mainly bought so that kids could play with them. So, due to wear and tear and parents throwing them out, there's still a rarity level there. Finding them loose is still sometimes a mission. And finding them carded is not always the most easy thing. Even some of the newer, more rare figures will hold their value just because there aren't so many of them. I deal with this all the time as a comic collector. Prices fluctuate. And sometimes, things DO fall off the map. For instance, western and war comics. You can almost not give these things away! But then, if you happen to collect them, you're probably going to be happy to pay a little more to finish your collection. It really comes down to what the old comic collecting credo says: Something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. And right now, people are willing to pay for Star Wars. And the way Disney is keeping it in the public view, it will probably be desirable for a long time to come. I mean, if we want to be serious: that Hulk #181 with the first appearance of Wolverine just keeps climbing and climbing. But, it's older than Star Wars and issues are always moving. But it's always high. Even when nobody gives a damn about Wolverine. It's just because it was wanted heavily at one point and will probably continue to be a grail. Just like a lot of these Star Wars figures people are willing to sell their left arm for. Anyway, Star Wars is safe. At least for the forseeable future.

Every goes in cycles . There will be a downturn and in 20 Years don’t be surprised if it explodes. It’s like classic cars there will Always be a demand and as time goes on and due to unforeseen unfortunate events catastrophic weather wars ect many will be destroyed or decreased. I’m passing my collection to My kids and they love the stuff and can do what ever they want at that time
@Chris.Mc838 ай бұрын
They are only valuable as long as there is a market for them. I "suspect" in another 20 years or so when all the original Star Wars fans are no longer interested in them, and all the speculators have flooded the market trying to offload them, their value's going to drop though the floor. ( Please keep in mind this is just speculation. )

I think a majority of our collections are going to be thrown in the trash. Can we look at America's population in 1983 versus today, versus what percentage of people back then liked Star Wars or even those who purchased the toys back then versus how many today are fans, there's a good chance that number will be greater than the number of toys still in displayable condition. We also always hear about model railroading dying out but I think there's always a percentage of young people who realize that they have expendable income and want a hobby, something that's unique to them. Plus sometimes at a particular age in life we want to acquire a hobby where we feel as though we have some control over something and thus feel as though we own it.😂😂

Maybe. I know I bought bitcoin in 2014 and sold it a few years later cause people told me it wouldn’t be worth anything. Could have a lot more money if I wanted :) learn not to listen to people :)

Same thing will happen to video games once consoles stop working, probably sooner than with toys losing value because the generations get too old or die.
@ThatJunkman10 ай бұрын
In the late 90s I was told old NES wouldn’t worth anything cause you can down the ROMs online and play them. Like playing the games is part of the reason people collect them. I bet most collectors never play it
@garlandstrife10 ай бұрын
@@ThatJunkman True, some collectors never play their physical media. There are others who do enjoy playing them in the original hardware every once in a while. Cartridges last a bit longer, but unfortunately CDs rot a lot easier, optical media is more delicate.

Although i do think it's going to happen some time, i don't think anyone needs to worry yet. It's definetly going to take some decades before Star Wars and the millennials truly die out. As of right now the prices are still rising. And if we're honest, who's truly collecting them JUST as investment? Even if Star Wars does die out, everything will return once the time comes. Just hold on tight to your collections! ✌
