Just had to say - thank you for posting a vehicle painting tutorial that wasn't just airbrush evangelism, it gets so tiring looking for or asking for advice on this subject and just getting endless "buy an airbrush or you'll never paint a good vehicle ever". Well, this certainly proves that sentiment wrong, it looks great.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate that. It is surprising what’s possible with a brush and some simple techniques :)

THIS! Your techniques produce absolutely fantastic work and prove that you don't need to buy an airbrush to paint vehicles. I'm building the Bandai AT-ST right now and plan on using this tutorial when it comes time to paint. I'll be adapting these techniques to some WW2 vehicle models in the future as well. Thank you for making this video!

So, firstly; just as with the hover tank, I have to say I respect your choice to paint this kit with regular brushes when I *know* that my first instinct would be to reach for the airbrush because this is ideal for taking advantage of the time saving element of airbrushing. This "miniature" (and in this case that term is *very* loosely used) looks like its about the same size and scale of the Bandai kit (and infinitely easier to assemble) which means that's a lot of surface area to paint by hand. Secondly, never have I witnessed, until this video, someone using dry-brushing to create such smooth gradations of highlight; had I not watched this video and only been shown the finished kit, I would have been dead certain an airbrushed was used, that's how smooth it looks. Clearly, you have mastered some sort of sorcery here because, by the very nature of the technique, I didn't even think it was possible to do something like this with dry-brushing; I have to second something that was said below, which is that you've managed to create a piece which could be used for the movie poster.
@Sorastro6 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! I agree, the airbrush sure is tempting when faced with a "mini" like this! However, I generally prefer to use the brush for tutorials that are aimed at a wide audience, most of whom don't have the luxury of an airbrush. I also get a kick out of rising to the challenge of using basic techniques to bring the figure to life - and in this case - creating a look that matches the look from the movies as closely as possible. I actually studied multiple freeze-framed shots from Return of the Jedi to try to pin down the colours and level of weathering, which is tricky as the light shifts quite dramatically during that sequence! The original trilogy of movies was a big part of my childhood and bringing a little piece of that world to life on my table top is a privilege and a joy :)
@ReallyBigBadAndy766 жыл бұрын
Amazing video as always. Based on my dry brushing experience with the AT ST from Imperial Assault, I’m clearly not doing this right. Do you have a video explaining the important points of dry brushing?
@Sorastro6 жыл бұрын
Hi Andy! Can I ask what is the specific issue you are having with the technique?
@ReallyBigBadAndy766 жыл бұрын
Good question. Well, on the AT ST for IA, I tried using a wide flat brush my kids had lying around. I don't know if I didn't let the base coat dry enough or the paint on the brush was too wet. But it went on very sticky and unevenly - not really making the kind of dry brush highlights I was looking for. other times, I end up leaving too much paint on the model.

I don't have the Mechanicus Standard Grey spray, but used the grey Vallejo spray. It seems that one is quite a bit lighter. Do you have any advice? Should I paint a base layer of Mechanicus Standard Grey (base paint) over it first, or can I just continue like in your video?

Hi, not so used to the citadel range, can you substitute the Citadel Air: Mechanicus Standard Grey for the spray primer. Are they the same grey as I know the sprays are not always a match to the paints in some lines. I think the grey looks like a great match and don't know a Vallejo has a good air equivalent. Thanks loving the videos!
@Sorastro6 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom! I'm pretty sure all of the different versions of "Mechanicus Standard Grey" should have the exact same tone, however I don't think the "Air" paints are primers as such so you still need to prime either with a spray can or something like one of the Vallejo primers for airbrush :)

Thanks Ethan! Oo that's a tough one.. I have both and I find myself using a lot more of the VMC paints than the VGC because the colours are generally more natural and subtle, but it does depend on what you're painting of course :)

Sorastro's Painting I think the games I will be painting will be Blood Rage, Rising Sun, Zombicide Black Plaque, Imperial Assault, and similar games

And this would not be the end of my paint collection just what I would use for a little till I can afford and need more paint.

I use an air brushing so what priming color should I use?

Hi Maxine! I think any mid-tone grey would be fine :)

is the music in this vid on your Starborn album? If so, I'll buy, if not, where can I buy it?

Hi Jake! No I'm afraid the music from this episode was written fresh for the Legion series and is scheduled to appear on album No.3 (Album No.2 will be coming around July and will feature my fantasy-themed music) :)

what color would you recommend for the barricade pieces. I want mine to be dark but i also want to do alot of blaster burn marks and battle damage so it cant be to dark.

Hi Kendall! You could actually use the exact same recipe used here for the AT-ST. You could freely adjust the brightness by adding black or white to create an overall darker or lighter look of course :)

You make great vehicle tutorials but I’m greatly disappointed by the lack of interiors in the Star Wars legion vehicle sculpts. Hopefully they update some of these to include them, they’ve certainly proven that they can create good interiors with some of the newer releases.

Thank you Connor! I agree, their vehicle sculpts have really come a long way.. 😀
