I mean Dreadnought has been used as a synonym for Battleship in real life and as such Dreadnought-Class Heavy Cruiser not making sense to people is understandable. However this doesn't change the fact that Dreadnought Heavy Cruiser does make sense. Since the only reason Battleships are called Dreadnoughts is that the British built HMS Dreadnought (a specific ship) in early 1900s/1910s and that ship was so revolutionary it made all battleships in service of all navies at the time obsolete. After that Battleships were built in that style (called Dreadnoughts) and older Battleships became Pre-Dreadnoughts. So if the British called that ship something else (or the Japanese or Americans who were working on similar ships at the time built theirs first) the term Dreadnought would have been replaced by something else. Incidentally I do dislike the Sci-Fi tendency to just do Battleship and then have bigger Battleships calling them Dreadnoughts. And I also love the Dreadnought Heavy Cruiser design.

"French Carolinas", "the Japanese Pre-Carolina Mikasa", "the German super-Carolina Bismarck" and Executor Star-Carolina". It's rather like the interwar Allied Powers (almost as if that's an intentional similarity). Just sort of... trusting that the bad people have been defeated and there's not any more of them. The legends New Republic was anything but de-militarized, in fact, many accused it of being just as fascist as the Empire, in particular when they built the 5th Fleet, which were about 500 capital ships all of the New Class modernization program (Nebula Class, Endurance Class, Majestic Class, MC-90 Class ecc...) When the Yuuzhan Vong arrived the New Republic fleets proved to be more than a match for their fleet, yet due to the incredibly incompetent leadership by the New Republic high command and certain politicians incompetence (cough cough Borsk Fey'La cough cough) they were unable to prevent the fall of the Core Worlds. It speak volumes however that even when Coruscant fell, the New Republic military didn't just collapse and it instead retreated orderly to Mon Calamari to continue the war.

TIE Defenders still have the E-Wing beat for everything but warhead count, and Interdictor/Punishers or Scimitars can compete with K-Wings for strike damage if not self defense lasers. Plus the Incom Defender's probably only on par with a late model TIE interceptor, or an Avenger sans missiles.

The ships took time to build and did well in the role given to them. It was a sign the New Republic took what was left of the Empire as a real threat unlike in the new cannon.

@Rising Horizon Gaming No She fits the bill all right . She get's everything handed to her. It's also been stated by the actress that she'll never lose. So yeah she's a Mary Sue that get's everything right all the time. Hell she was able to use the most dangerous weapon in the galaxy with no training. She is the picture of lazy writing. This ship class took years to design and build. Also it's a decent design and it does what it was designed to do. I love this ship but it got replaced replaced pretty quickly by a more Mon Cala inspired design though the name escapes me at the moment and again the class itself was built by looking at the shortcomings of ISD and lessons learned from it. Plus it's still expensive to build and as Space Dock mentioned in the video less than 50 were made. Plus unlike Rey the ship has a flaw where it has no point defense weapons...though considering the fighters it has I suppose it doesn't really need them. Where as she can do pretty much anything and the reasons why are shoveled in after the fact.

If your goal is to get me to dislike the ship or to start liking Rey then you're going to fail either way. Plus the Empire got some damn powerful new ships too so really doesn't overly matter. It's a good design and that's all I'm saying at this point.

I’m glad we got the Starhawk first. It seems a lot more like a ship that was designed for a fledgling government with few resources, and its design isn’t half-bad. The Nebula is a high-tech next-generation design, the kind of ship we’d see in the Sequel trilogy (and I really hope we do, or at least something similar to it), and the Starhawk is very clearly something of a patch job.

@@nateryan8167 They're YKL-37R Nova Couriers, first appearing in Star Wars Galaxies as the rebel faction-exclusive 'light freighter' tonnage ship, with the Empire getting the VT-49 Decimator while neutral pilots got the good old YT-1300, these light freighters were built by Gallofree Yards inc, the same manufacturer as the GR-75 medium transport. And unlike the GR-75, it was as beloved by its pilots as any YT-1300 would've been, a shame that in-universe Gallofree was already circling the drain when they tried to make it to reverse their fortunes.

clpfox it is the best capital ship you can get. Ecks already ranks it as the top tier SW ship. It’s specialization to beat any ship that made up the backbone of the imperial remnant in ship to ship slugfest is already enough. Making it have extreme anti fighter capabilities when it can already carry the best fighters available and have armament that can counter fighters would make it too much of a “do everything” or “super ship.” Spacedock dislikes these kinds of ships in favour of a specialized ship that can work in tandem with a fleet. Because all round “super ships” usually fail in their individual categories when tested against dedicated specialized ships within the fleet. That’s why a good fleet composition is always needed, no matter how powerful your ship is or how much it can do.

I've thought of something similar in my family story of how I would have written the prequels. The new republic make new types of ships made from old and imperial ships on multiple planets like the star hawk. They all have the class NR for obvious reasons. But the NR cruiser is also addressed as a star defender since it's made for defensive strategy with a group of NR frigates so allow better results then the imperial ships. They're used to defend against the first order and a large navy of these and the other ships are used in the final battle I made. The NR cruiser is used for anti ships such as cruisers and star fighters with its primary weaponry of turbo lasers and laser cannons. The frigates are anti starship and fighter carriers. But the cruiser like the nebulon were better maneuvering with the frigates to better strategy purposes.

The negative about the Nebula is that to achieve all this incredible performance, other than 40 years of technological advances compared to the ISD, it sacrifices a lot of the versatility that allows the ISD to operate on its own. The ISD has a lot more cargo space than the Nebula, it usually only carries around 60 fighters due to also carrying a significant ground invasion force, many shuttles, and even pre-constructed bases, as well as enough supplies to campaign on its own for years on end. The Nebula cannot carry that, it's already packed to the brim as it is, so while the ISD can operate on its own on long campaigns as a good multirole capital ship, the Nebula is a hyper-specialized capital ship killer, that needs a support fleet to function well. Of course, the New Republic didn't really have a need for that type of versatility: their main concern was developing a hyper-effective Star Destroyer to engage and destroy imperial fleets in conventional and decisive battles, and at this the Nebula was extremely capable. When the Empire built the ISD, conversely, it needed a ship that could operate on its own on long campaigns in the outer rim, where it could not rely on a support fleet, and that the ship would be able to quickly launch a significant planetary assault.

Great video! Question: Although you stated that the Nebula did not have point-defense weapons, could it use its concussion missiles to defend against fighters? A salvo of missiles could thin out a squadron pretty quick.....

It had good targeting software and fast-tracking turbolaser turrets, so the turbolasers doubled as point defense weaponry. While it had no dedicated anti-fighter weaponry, its main guns worked just fine against fighters.

Everything from the Tarkin doctrine spoke of the ego of the man and his psychopathy. Like most tyrants he was more facade than substance. his ship designs reflect that emptiness. It doesn't take a genius to lay waste to a entire planet for a handful of rebels, but it does take a big gun.

Dear spacedock I have a question that I believe you could answer better than most. In star trek post voy and ds9 should the federation use carriers. I have thought about this for some time and I can't think of why not after voy the federation should be able to use the delta flyer to a much larger extent in a wing for example where it could serve as a fighter bomber of sorts. The delta flyer (DF) also has sheilds and is warp capable this would mean that a single carrier could cast a wide net across a system or the neutral zone. The DF would also be able to bolster almost any ships combat and recon abilities. The federation could also use scout fleets that have a couple of defiance class vessels with wings of DF's. This question has been on my mind for a while and I'd like to know what your thoughts are on this sincerely a fan P.S sorry for the long letter style it was the only way I could think of to put this question up

Try The Lost Fleet series by Jack Campbell. It's a setting where warships routinely accelerate up to and fight at one or two-tenths the speed of light, and employ kinetic kill projectiles fired at similar speeds to bombard long-range targets. While the ships themselves cannot survive impacts from relativistic projectiles of any size larger than ball bearings (which are themselves used in shotgun bursts called 'grapeshot' as a standard weapon), they can easily evade any attempt to use such large, unguided projectiles in ship-to-ship combat. Missiles, being powered and guided, are effective weapons, but vulnerable to point defenses. I'm not sure that counts for your challenge, though. *SPOILER* Later on in the series, they come across a death-star size space station set up as a sentinel to guard a jump point. The protagonists attempt to destroy it using kinetic kill projectiles, but the station is able to survive the attack by using what I suspect was probably an anti-gravity field to warp space along the projectile's path into a different direction, sort of the opposite of a black hole, which bends space around itself so tightly that light curves around it. It's suspected that they need an installation of that size to employ the defense though, as it's later demonstrated that the warships built by that same faction do not possess the same defense. Once again though, that's a station, not a ship, so I'm not sure it counts for your challenge.

SerialSnowmanKiller The kinetic projectiles in The Lost Fleet series weren’t true relativistic weapons. Their actual velocity was nowhere near c, and in practice, they probably only ever reached .5c at the very most. That’s why the Dancers were able to intercept and destroy the Enigma’s kinetic rounds at the Second Battle of Midway. If you want relativistic weapons, take a peek at the Star Carrier novels. There is a lot of American masterbation in those books and much of the political stuff is very poorly written, but the actual combat is superb and sticks close to hard sci-fi.
