Someone using a jedi code does not mean they are a jedi or even force sensitive. My guess is: the captain assumed someone without any ability to use the force stumbled over that old code and tried to use it in order to swindle the republic. Which (considering how rare trained force users are in that period) probably would have been correct at least 9 out of 10 times. The security detail would have been sufficient to detain any imposters pretending to be jedi.
@Dreamfox-df6bg
@Dreamfox-df6bg Жыл бұрын
Considering he was carrying an important prisoner, this security detail wasn't enough. That ship could have carried an elite team or be full of regular soldiers. It could fire any weapons, which might be hidden, it has inside his ship or, as mentioned in the video, it could even be a bomb. This could have been anything, from a prank, to someone wanting to free his prisoner to someone who wants her dead. He should have 1. Ignored them and reported this encounter to fleet command or 2. deploy a fighter screen and send a security detail over to check it out while keeping his distance.

Unless they were Imperial-sympathizing suicide bombers, or a shuttle sent by a pirate group with a huge ion bomb to make the ship inoperable, or any of a thousand scenarios which would make it absolutely unacceptable for a random civilian ship with ancient access codes to be allowed to dock within a warship. It’s hard to imagine a scenario where it would be OK to do what this captain did.

One thing that occurs to me about New Republic demilitarization is that this would be *very* bad for major shipyard systems (Corellia, Kuat, etc.) and the Senate might have had to agree to acquiring new ships or else face a collapse of their shipbuilding industry. But, not wanting to get sucked into the expense black hole of the ISDs and MC-80's, they came up with a smaller design that would have the additional advantage of visually distinguishing the NR fleet from the Imperial fleet. Smaller, friendlier, warships.
@granatmof
@granatmof Жыл бұрын
Honestly when you consider the "Light freight" class of starship which are readily weaponizeable, it would really make sense for large Republic vessels to be built around a modular chassis. Strip away the armor and guns and rearrange some bulk heads na interiors space and they can be transporter cargo ships works. It may not be the most robust of war fighters, but for peacekeeping forces, you want cheap efficient systems for exerting pressure, nit overt miliary action. The more a particular frame is produced, the cheaper it is to build and maintain.
@blackc1479
@blackc1479 Жыл бұрын
Lol "smaller friendlier warships". I can actually hear them pitching it that way. Agreed about the Shipyards, the NR would have had to always plan to keep them grooving along for the noted and many other reasons. Switching to smaller, lighter (and friendlier) ships would be a win for everyone. The yards get many more fast, simple builds, improving ease of construction, dock availability, plus a smaller but much steadier income stream. (Smaller paycheck everyday, vs one big one a year) The NR gets all the good stuff noted here and in the vid.

@granatmof I get where you're coming from on this, but even trying to be "demilitirized" they would have to keep a first tier response available. I'm kinda thinking of the whole yhevetha story arc. The folks who are going to get thrown into the blender are going to demand some kind of professional option. But the politicians are going to try to keep it as small as possible to try to stay on message. So a big fleet of small ships is a good compromise. Though the modular idea would be great to pitch to systems etc. They could have a standing fleet of ships that could swing between coast guard, q ship, and in downtime and emergency be turned into liberty/relief ships. Plus the yards would no doubt be happy to sell a "mini-refit" station to help switch modes. Always gotta upsell lol

It's not a question of trust but a doctrine and intended use - TIE fighter is a very capable craft despite how they show in movies. Yes they do lack shields but shields are not a game changer on starfighter in SW universe - x-wing's shields can hold for 1-2 seconds under fire from a single TIE fighter. Shields do provide a better survivability but only against light flack or random shots. You should also consider that after end of clone wars there were no manor armed conflicts of such scale for several generations. Rebellion posed a terrorist treat and was not easy to find, but not an enemy in direct confrontation. 99% of empire navy have never seen a single rebel and were doing patrol, peace keeping and anti-piracy activities in millions of worlds across the galaxy. In most anything more than a TIE was just an overkill and as result just wase of money for empire. And empire added more capable crafts as rebellion treat increased. TIEi, TIEa, TIE defender and many more. Most of them were plain better than rebel alternatives in each and any aspect

I can totally see the New Republic going from a battle hardened military power to a limp one. Most of Europe quickly made that transformation after the end of the cold war. The military was cut down in manpower, material and training. Old personnel and leaders either adapted or were replaced. The doctrine was changed from being ready for battle to just maintaining the little force that remained, representative and policing duties.
@TheTrueAdept
@TheTrueAdept Жыл бұрын
The biggest reason for that is the 'End of History' memetic hazard that showed up during the '90s. In addition to that, there was no real reason (at the time) to keep Cold War-level military budgets. The thing is that military budgets tend to be economically reductive, not economically productive, especially when the Big Bad it was aimed at vanishes to the either.

But even in Contemporary Europe it took decades of declining budgets and contentious procurement programs that resulted in no new weapon systems. It was only when a threat appeared that everyone realized how unprepared they had become. However Western Europe or NATO Europe would be more akin to system defense fleets in Star Wars. They're not really intended for global or galactic force projection, just regional projection. Europe is backed by the US much like local systems should be backed by the New Republic. The New Republic should be focused on sector security systems and equiping local systems to be able to hold off for so long before Reinforcements arrive. Essentially democratizing the military. And usi g the US as an example, there's numerous military bases across the US which have no military influence with local cities. Having clear distinctions that military cannot be used to enforce civilian law is a very clear step that the New Republic Lacks.

For me I loved that moment with the arrogant captain (and all the moments that show the mentality of the new republic), as it ties in well into that "head-canon" me and some of my friends use regarding the recay of the New Republic. The eagerness of the Republic to believe that they have moved on from the war and Imperial rule, but in reality we see that the New Republic seems to be set-up to fail despite the rebellion against the Empire was succesfull. It brings a very interesting dynamic to the Star Wars world that we see new content in at the moment as the types of stories it helps facilitate. I look forward to seeing the "core" of the Rebellion to be branded warmongers and criminals by the New Republic, as they are treated as "the boy who cried wolf" too many times. Most people in the New Republic were not rebels. They made lives under the Empire - maybe not comfortably, maybe not with enthusiasm or real loyalty, but they chose to live under it rather than rebel. Every time a former rebel goes on about Imperial threats it's a reminder that those bystanders were wrong - or they can instead believe the former rebel is an alarmist. The latter is a lot more comfortable as a mindset.

It's not even "head canon". Both in Legends and the new canon, the New Republic had a tendency towards complacency due to civilian politicians who, as you say, wanted to pretend that the wars were over and that the galaxy just wanted peace. Then there were secret Imperials among their ranks, including in the Senate. Ahsoka showcases this with the allegedly New Republic shipyards on Corellia being run by Imperial loyalists who wear NR lapel pins even as they facilitate the theft of assets. Senator Xiono seemed oddly uncurious as to why anybody would want to steal SSD hyperdrive cores when the NR is not building ships that big. If he were logical (or not getting bribed by the Imperial Remnant) then logic would lead to asking *who* needs SSD hyperdrives and *what* kind of ships do they want them for?

I honestly feel like this ship could take a lone star destroyer. Not by itself, but in conjunction with its fighter compliment. The Rebel Alliance built their naval tactics around their starfighters. It was out of necessity due to their lack of capital ships, but it made them very good at taking down very large targets with well-coordinated starfighter attacks. This cruiser has multiple hangers, so probably has 3 or 4 starfighter squadrons on board. Deploy them against the star destroyer while the ship itself lays down covering fire and draws the fire of the star destroyer away from the fighters.

@@Engine33Truck *starts laughing hysterically* No. A VSD alone has the power to 1v1 this ship. This kind of fight is what a Star Destroyer is built for. Standing its ground and slugging it out with an equal. Making itself 'bait' won't work because this is the kind of target a VSD or even an ISD would eagerly chew up and spit out. Not to mention and VSD would be able to easily match the NR fighter compliment with an equal number of TIEs to screen the VSD while it goes after the 'bait' ship. An ISD would be able to almost double up on them. So unless this thing is bristling with enough guns that it would go against the NR's 'more peaceful friendlier' doctrine, it will NOT win in a fight against a lone Star Destroyer. It would actually require them to gang up on a lone Star Destroyer and at least a fourth of each of their fighter compliment would have be Y-wing bombers. This ship as described is the NR's version of a Quasar Light Carrier. It has no business attacking anything heavier than a heavy frigate. 2:15 To be fair the Rebels heavily relied on special forces to win their battles, their actual foot soldiers were crap. Most of the troops we see in action during the movies have some sort of special status among the Rebels for different reasons, whether it be the Marines in Rogue One, Alderaanian royal guards in episode 4, rebel special forces in episode 5 and the pathfinders in episode 6 and in Rogue One. I am surprised we are still seeing many Mon Calamari in the fleet considering that they create a home defence fleet during this period. In fact that could explain the creation of these new hybrid cruisers, because the Mon Calamari are probably busy reorganising their own star cruisers and are probably still in the early stages of designing larger vessels we see in the Sequels, so they have provided a temporary design to keep the peace.

That's the Home One. I know it currently says 1300 meters, but back in the day it was considered to be longer than a Star Destroyer, being the rebel flagship. In return of the Jedi, as the fighters and craft fly past it before it jumps to hyperspace it was demonstrably longer than any other Rebel ship in the fleet that fought at Endor. That aside, lets accept that it is 1300 meters, the new ships don't look 1/3rd, they look about 1/2. Perspective matters. That makes them about 600m.

That MonCal cruiser your comparing to is clearly the HomeOne, who's size is highly disputed with some estimates putting it 3x longer then an ISD. A size extrapolation from the windows on the new ship would be far more reliable and in my opinion will yield a length of atleast 600m.

Agreed, especially since it appears to dwarf the 300m long Nebulon-bs in the fleet shots we've got so far. Assuming Mon Cala ship designations are structured MC(number representing reactor output)(letter designation for military built ship class), and that this is a Non Cala design, I'm tempted to call this an MC60b medium cruiser until we learn more.

When I realized it was a prisoner transfer ship, I was flabbergasted. I know it's just for plot reasons, but seeing the captain act the way he was is a total facepalm moment for me. He did the equivalent of stopping your prisoner van because someone in a shoddy CIA uniform was holding out their thumb, and then letting them aboard without even asking their name.

@8:10 For the _porpoise_ of this war? At 1/3 the length of an MC80, this frigate would be approximately 1/27 the volume and thus resources. Imperial ships tended to have large crews, this ship, which looks much like the Quarren made CIS vessels, may have a far smaller crew with droids performing maintenance and repair supervised by organic officers. A small capital ship like this, with a squadron of fighters and a few shuttles or light freighters, would be a great hero ship for an ensemble of characters.

I love the anti-Tarkin doctrine at play here. Another advantage of having a focus on hangars is that it makes it easier for non-New-Republic ships to dock, which obviously didn't end well this time, but given the NR is trying to have systems set up their own defense forces, it's good to be able to bring them aboard for joint missions and negotiations.

I would like to imagine something like this would make use of a large amount of hidden pdt systems paired with a large amount of missile tubes. Basically in a large scale battle serving as a fighter/ missile screen while being able to dump a large amount of torpedo's/missiles from both fighters and launch silos so that it would overwhelm and burst down larger ships. Or have the missiles serve as a large screening tool destroying several squadrons of fighters or smaller warships to allow your fighters to get the jump on a less defended capital ship. This would explain why there isnt really any visible weapons as the pdts would just be retracted under the hull while missile silos are just covered by physical blast sheilds.

I’m hoping that that gap in the main hull between the main parts of the ship and the engines is a modular area for freight containers or personnel transport modules, hospital modules,or external racks for quick-deployable fighters (sort of like the Gozanti-class cruisers and the TIE racks). If that’s what these are, this medium or light cruiser could actually be the ideal ship for peace keeping and patrol.

I know it was just an off-hand comment. However, I feel it made sense that the Empire concentrated its resources on big vessels like Star Destroyers since it ruled more through intimidation. Its focus was on keeping potentially rebellious planets pacified, as opposed to maintaining security against pirates and smugglers. There is a certain prestige and threat from seeing a single Star Destroyer, that isn't quite the same as seeing a few frigates. Sure, it can only be in a fewer places but like I said - the Empire ruled by intimidation. Knowing that the Empire has them and could bring one into your sector if it chose to, was sufficient.

I've always been more of a Halo fan when it comes to ships, they feel the most realistic and just look the best in my opinion. That and the whole "you built guns on your ship, while I built a ship around my gun!" strategy they got going. But I gotta say, this new New Republic ship is pretty damn good looking. Alongside the Venator and the hammerhead from KOTOR, its probably one of my favorite ship designs in SW. Edit: Just as I post this, I realize that my three favorite ships belong to the three major eras of the Republic.
@granatmof
@granatmof Жыл бұрын
Hammerheads are pretty cool, especially as they were meant to be ships of the line. Put all your heavy armor and weapons on the front and form up in parallel to minimize cross section and suddenly the enemy can only hit your heaviest armor while you fire back in force. I'm not sure which channel explained the usefulness if the hammerhead, but in doing so it makes sense. Honestly the old republic fleets make just a little more sense. Heck the old republic fighter was used for like 4000 years.

I have to add after noticing on the fly throughs there are 4 laser battery's arround the tower after of the ship and likely other defences in that area to protect the hanger bays and control tower the forward looks to just rely on the armor plating and shielding to screen what an effective fight screen misses as looks like there is nothing on the forward section of the ship.

@danielbeck2739
@danielbeck2739 Жыл бұрын
I do like the design choice they went for with this ship and can see the potential it has in an escort/enforcement patrol role. And assuming it is carrying on with Mon Cala design principles it would have the staying power to absorb a level punishment from say that pirate carrier from the Mandalorian series with shields alone. Have the engine power to keep up and/or outrun most other larger ships. A reasonable fighter compliment with the 4 hangars that can be loaded with not just fighters but other shuttle and small hyperdrive equipped patrol craft to be the vanguard or relay comms from squadrons if they happen to be too far away to get a signal to the carrier with intel or calls for aid. And as for weapons, the Mon Cala were known for not just shields but powerful sensor equipment too. Most of the MC-80 turbo lasers could actually target and shot most fighter craft and even intercept missiles to higher accuracy than Imperial IIs on average. So, this ship might have probably something very similar with ion cannons and lighter turbo lasers. And something else that caught my eye, just behind the main hull there are these large structures that sort of reminds me of the MC75 in an odd way. If we are assuming this was based around a MC30 frigate, they might actually be missile launchers. I get this the New Republic and chances are they would more than likely crap themselves and act like atypical imperials and fall on their swords and faces with just hubris alone, but missiles can come with a variety of warheads. And if they are encountering say that pirate ship again and another 2 or 3 join the party out of hyperspace. Those missiles would be the equalizers to wreck 1 or 2 of those capitol ships and give the cruiser some ability to contribute more to taking on something larger like an Imperial II or an Executor and keep well out of turbo battery range long enough for its squadrons to least give them a corridor to come in from and drop shots from a few ion cannons to disrupt before bolting it again and calling for reinforcements. Well, that's assuming you has someone competent in charge, and let's be honest that is looking more and more in short supply given the ineptitude of what we've seen so far here and, in the movies, alone...
