After each episode I kept saying "This show has no right to be this good!" The writing, the set design, the costumes, the music, the acting, it's all stellar. After the huge disappointment that Kenobi was, this level of quality was very much welcome. FInally, the parts of the Star Wars universe I wanted to see are explored!

(Or at least off focus) with not so much puppetry in it (...love me some Henson&Co.. though)

Having no subtitles for the languages other than basic and having Diego Luna keep his Mexican accent are great decisions IMO. It shows that among the humans there are many different cultures and not just the Star Wars creatures can be alien and uprooted.

And it's also another way the show understands its audience by expecting them to take clues from the actors and not rely solely on dialogue

There were not supposed to be subtitles, but also the first bloc of 3 episodes released at the same time, so the flashback story plays a little quicker in that regard. In large part I think they deliberately went with ambiguity for the flashbacks, just because exacting detail wasn’t really necessary beyond the broad strokes of the story itself.

This show has rejuvenated my passion for Star Wars, even on my 3rd time watching I was on the edge of my seat. Each episode just gets better. You nailed it about feeling "real", it feels lived in so that even side character feel fully fleshed out. The acting and dialogue is the best I've seen in TV, period. The first 3 are definitely best viewed together.

This is a pretty important point, and I think some of the people complaining about the show might have given it more leeway if they had known that the first season was structured this way intentionally. It helps to think of the arcs as movies split into parts rather than episodes.

You may be dismayed by the apparent lack of aliens in this series. It's actually realistic and not even unprecedented in Star Wars. We've seen alien planets where there were few humans or other aliens, beyond spaceport trade centers. So, it's very realistic that the few human planets would have few aliens outside the spaceport, and many would have hardly any at all. It's the same way, generally speaking, on Earth. We also know that the Empire promulgates xenophobia (Palpatine doesn't like aliens) that's been apparent even since A New Hope, so there would be almost no aliens within the Imperial government and few in the areas directly controlled by the Imperial government. The environments in this series feel more real because they're real. The production company actually went to different locations and built practical sets. Something that didn't occur to me on first watch is that the reason the language spoken by the kids in the flashback isn't translated is because it had become a dead language by the time Cassian is an adult. We see only children...what calamity overtook the adults, and how likely is a bunch of kids really going to survive long-term? Pay attention to the different people with speaking roles on Ferrix. They're not fluff. You'll need to know who and said what...there'll be a test later. We warned you that this series is best viewed in three-episode arcs, but if you're committed to sticking with it until you see the pattern, that's okay.

Excellent! Let's go! Glad this won on your Patreon so you are forced to watch since you weren't planning on watching it because of fan opinions and how bad it can get. For me this is what I'd like to see more of from Star Wars. It connects very well with the world that is set up in the first movie from 1977. This show does so much with showing and not telling like a good drama should for a more mature audience. The Kenari flashback doesn't have subs but if if you just watch the actors and how they speak and act you can tell what's going on. You picked up a lot of what was going on with that. But may have missed that Cassa wanted to join the party, and that the girl leader said it was okay. Then he was putting on the make up in the same fashion that she did, meaning there's as crush of envy thing going on with him. At the end there, you could guess that he tells his sister that he'll be back. I said it before but the first three episodes were dropped on the same day but really should have just been one longer premiere episode. You will definetly feel that after watching the second episode. Someone else may fill you in on how the season is structured, but I won't go into it here. What we have here with this first episode is some great worldbuilding. The show is very grounded and the aliens are minimal. The start of the episode had that card that said "Year BBY 5" meaning "Five Years Before the Battle of Yavin" meaning the original Star Wars film. The Pre-Mor Security Corporation is who we see as the cops here. The Empire isn't present here. They have farmed out security control to corporations and as told, have regluar meetings to know everything is under control. I love the scene with the Chief Inspector and how he totally called what happened and just wants it swept under the rug to keep things running smoothly for the corporation. But yeah, you know that guy with his tailored uniform is gonna be trouble. I enjoyed watching you guys suss out what was going on with the town on Ferrix. It's great how well they made it feel immersive and that you're living in the Star Wars universe. Bix is lovely and Timm should be so lucky to be going out with her, but yeah, you did pick up that used to be a thing with her and Cassian. Looking forward to your next episode reaction!

There's definitely not supposed to be subtitles. You can figure out basically what's going on without understanding the actual words. It seems like a strange ending because the first 3 episodes are one story arc. Trust me and stick with it. It is so very, very worth it. Everything that happened in this episode is important for later toward the end of the season. It's hard to tell what's practical and what's CGI because the town of Ferrix was all really built. Almost all of the sets are practical, and almost all the characters are real and believable and have their own arcs and backstories. Anyway, enough gushing. I'll see you next time.

Hell fricking yeah! It's so good to see you again after our sad departure from the best Sci-Fi show ever last week. But this week you are back with one of the top three shows of 2022 (the other ones being Severance and REACHER). And I am so here for all 12 episodes of this glory! Yes, it might be a slow burner and there won't be much action about 60% of the time but I feel like this show finally put story first and action second. And don't get me wrong, the action is still fantastic, but they are also telling an incredible story! So let's get into it! 0:10 Love the title screen already! 1:39 Yeah, I think that's what a lot of casual Star Wars fans experienced. They just became indifferent to it. I kinda did too. I still watched the new shows that came out and to be honest, The Mandalorian got me back into it again. It was just so good and refreshing. But all the other shows couldn't deliver that. Until this one! 3:40 I love the little fanfare. And they switch out the droids and helmets there based on the show this is in front of. 3:51 And this intro theme is gorgeous! Really! In general, the music of this show is great! But this intro is just the peak I think. 4:09 Yes, the production design really stands out in this series! The sets are actual sets. I don't know if you have heard that but a lot of the Star Wars shows have been filmed in "The Volume". It's basically a 360° LCD dome that they can project landscape and stuff onto. This way they don't have to use any greenscreen. But you can't have anything traversing from the actual props into the Volume screen. This show is almost completely physical locations and you can subconsciously feel that! The environments are even more lived in in this show than in other SW shows. 6:46 Yep, it's the guys from the bar. 7:32 You can see Cassian's brain working here. He is so sorry for the other guy but at the same time he needs to survive. 7:47 The facial expression on Cassian's face just says sorrow. There is nothing more. Just sorrow. And yes, it was pretty hardcore for Star Wars. But there are a lot of firsts for SW in this show. The brothel for starters. But there are also the first "Shit" and the first hint at sex I think. 8:14 Yep, as far as I can tell that is a Y-Wing 8:30 I think this is about 5 years before Rogue One which directly leads into A New Hope, so around 5 years before the OT 11:04 This is slow but great world building! 12:48 Well, they're part of some security company in a sector where the empire hasn't really taken over yet, so they can still do things their way. A murder with this kind of situation would just stir the empire up and draw attention to this sector. 14:35 At that point I couldn't either. It seems to be a very very valuable thing that is highly illegal and not very common. 15:32 Yeah, I think they are alluding to them having had a romantic relationship before but I'm not sure. That's what it looks like to me. 16:19 There is always a reason to actually make up a language if you can. Just look at Lang Belta. Best fictional language. Even better than Klingon, sasa ke? ^^ 18:55 That's one of the few small Easter Eggs that are showing you that you are actually in the Star Wars universe. Only for the people who know and not sticking out like Jar Jar in a pack of clones. Just naturally in the background. 19:16 Kenari is the planet that Cassian mentioned in the Brothel. He was looking for a woman from Kenari. 20:53 Just checked it and no, there are no subtitles there. I turned on the English CC and it just said "Speaks Kenari"... With German subtitles there wasn't even that... 21:43 I imagine he said something like "You should stay" or "I need to go alone" or sth like that. 23:36 God no, please no more Tatooine! At least for a while. There was so much Tatooine and I really don't like sand ^^ 24:56 Well, that's because they are real. And it's interesting that you mention Coruscant because you may or may not be able to draw a comparison yourself ;) 25:59 I think that's called retro-futurism or something. It almost feels Steampunky but with more advanced technology. And it does fit this darker Star Wars era pretty well! 26:36 There's Cassian, Bix and her (probably) boyfriend Tim, and the Imperial Security Cop Guy is called Syril Karn (which I admit I had to look up because I can never remember his name either). 27:27 Yes, you are correct, they are both in this show and they both have incredible roles and performances to really anticipate and look forward to. They're amazing! And yes, The Batman is a fantastic movie! No more "Thanks for joining us, Screaming Firehawks"... Makes me a little sad ^^ So, you're taking the slow approach and watch one episode per sitting? That's fine, but be prepared that not THAT much happens sometimes. Everything still very much moves the plot forward but it most importantly builds the world. Two episodes per week sounds great, I didn't expect that many! Is The Last of Us ending then? And with two episodes a week you might not even feel the slow move that much. But this was a great introduction to the world and I am glad that you already like the characters and want to continue the story. So, until the next world-building week, take care
@hadinizami7656 Жыл бұрын
there are no subtitles because Cassian does not remember his own language. Im a migrant who moved to an english speaking country around the same age, and I have had to go through that loss of culture as well. He was taken as a child, isolated from anyone else who was like him, and raised among people foreign to him speaking a different language. He also seems to have forgotten his sister's name, although he may have just been asking for the name she was using.

@@catch-uppackets2664 You will. Star Wars always gives us action and sometimes even romance and drama, but what elevates Andor above other recent Star Wars entries is the writing and mature performances. Tonally, the show dials up the political thriller element, builds tension, and presents duplicity really well. Strong casting, gorgeous costumes, and yes, dope production design remain. The season continues to build across episodes and for me, Mon Mothma & Luthen are MVPs.

The blue guys are not imperials, They are Preox-Morlana (Pre-Mor Authority). This corporation is in government of Morlani Sector(Morlana One, Four, Ferrix and maybe more) and they only answer to the empire, but they are independent. Maybe next time focus on small details and dont talk during dialogues and it will be clearer to you.

I'm presuming it was just a slip (perhaps for the algorithm?) but Rogue One (which is great and the best SW movie outside the OT) was set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope not between Force Awakens and The Last Jedi... PS: There aren't any subs for when they speak Kenari. The series is composed of several arcs and, especially in the early ones, individual episodes function better as parts of a bigger whole than on their own.

I was in pretty much the exact same place with Star Wars as what you described, including not really having a strong opinion either way of Last Jedi, and never seeing Rise of Skywalker. Hopefully you’ll have the same opinion of this show as I do, which is that it’s one of the best shows in years.
