[copy pasted from my comment on blind wave's reaction] i think a lot of people miss this. vaders second, fourth and fifth lines to ahsoka is not a threat but a warning. He doesn’t want to hurt her like he hurt padme. He know once he starts fighting her he cannot stop himself from destroying her. His second line to her “we need not be adversaries” meaning i don’t want to fight you. Fourth: “Anakin Skywalker was weak. I destroyed him” meaning the person you are looking for is not here. If you fight me i will destroy you like i did your master Fifth: “Revenge is not the jedi way” this is his last attempt to tell her to listen to his training and walk away. But like anakin ahsoka does not hide her feelings.

Fun Fact 1: Freddie Prinze and Sarah Michelle Gellar's son was watching this episode with both his parents, knowing the outcome, they were a bit worried that it would be too dark for their son.. Then when Maul kills the Seventh sister, their son turns around and asks "Wait, did Maul just kill mom?" Freddie and Sarah looked at each other briefly then said yes. Then their son just turned back around to watch the remainder of the episode.

For just a few seconds we get to see Anakin again, after Ahsoka’s declaration his eyes show shock, mixed with sadness and careful consideration about what she’s saying. The early versions of the script had Maul fighting Vader, but as it evolved they realized it would be one fight too many, it would take up too much of the episode, and the personal story between Ahsoka and Vader was too compelling and needed all the screen time.

Some great details in this include the shot where Vader see’s Ahsoka come back is shot the same way as Anakin seeing Ahsoka leave the temple. The fact that the sad version of Ahsoka’s theme is played, just like during the final scene of the scene of the Clone Wars season 5 finale.

My favourite three things & one extra: • The last thing Kanan promised is that he'd see Hera again... which is _exactly_ the thing that he literally can't do anymore. He can't see what's going to happen and it's a lesson that he can't forget any more and it's gonna change him forever. • Maul is trying to take Ezra, because he's genuinely been left empty and alone so many times: Grievous murdered all of the Nightsisters so he has nowhere to return home to, Palpatine never came back for him after he survived _and_ killed Savage which is the closest family Maul ever had, and as we see a tiny bit of in Solo: he eventually lost Crimson Dawn and ended up alone again on Malachor. He's always so close to finding a place to belong and then losing it because of power and revenge and you can see him struggling with those impulses. • Ahsoka actually hearing Anakin's voice directly under Vader's mask always hits me SO hard. The shift from James Earl Jones into Matt Lanter is the one thing that would stop Ahsoka from being able to leave. It was one of the most impactful moments especially after Clone Wars got cut short. The little extra: At 4:07 Maul says, _"Running away _*_again,_*_ Lady Tano?"_ which is foreshadowing a past event of the two of them meeting that is something *_none_* of us have seen... yet.

Wrt your first one, I’ll give you another bit of Kanan foreshadowing: Kanan, the episode before the finale: “Never take your attention off an enemy, Ezra!” Also Kanan, this episode: *takes attention off Maul to glance at Ahsoka* *is immediately blindsided*

The expresion on Ezra's face and the one on Rex's... That brought a tear to my eye. And that ending! So many questions in the air, indeed. I just want to point out how great the choreography is. It completely captures Vader’s straightforward style from the original trilogy with the flashier styles found in the more recent works and manages to blend the two in a very convincing manner that makes Vader look menacing while also making Ashoka looks like she isn’t just flailing around.

@Fitri Zahren Ehhhhhhh kind of. The films (and eventually clone wars) were the final say in what was canon, so things in Legends had to be retconned to fit in the continuity.

@TheClari25

I remember at the time, everyone assumed that Ashoka had died. With no answers and months till season 3, everyone went through the last scene with a fine tooth comb. The imagery of Vader walking away into the sunlight, combined with the bird flying overhead as Ashoka walks into the pitch black darkness of the temple, led many people to believe that this was Disney's way of killing her off screen by implying that she was dying/would die in that temple. (Similar to how Avatar couldn't outright kill Jet on camera, so it hinted that he died by having Toph say he was lying when he said he'd be okay.) A drawing Dave Filoni released didn't help and as season 3 progressed and there was no hint of Ashoka, it was basically confirmed that she'd died until (season 4?) came out and revealed what happened to her.

We saw earlier in the season how powerful Ahsoka has become when she faces the two inquisitors together and gets the upper hand. Now we get to see her in full flow, fighting *Darth* *Vader* one-on-one and actually landing the first strike. Of course it's as much an emotional struggle as a physical one, because both are highly conflicted because of their shared history.

So much emotion in this episode. So much turmoil indeed. So many little loose ends and things not fully realized but small tid-bits. Seeing Ahsoka fighting him like this was so moving and it hit so hard knowing the history of these two. Maul being himself. I love the moments where his wording mirrored Yoda. Away put your weapon. And so forth. It's fascinating how much of the Jedi training had been of the sort that led to Anakin falling to the dark side. The issue of them saying once you take that path down the darkside forever will it dominate your destiny. Luke proved this wasn't the case. He proved that he could use the Dark side to defeat Vader and then stop and not follow through. Which is funny because Qui Gonn also used the force in ways that was cheating here or there. He did it in Gunga trying to get them to give a ship to get to the human part of Naboo. If your wise then you will see the moments where the chaotic side of Qui Gonn was well put forward to Obi Wan by Dooku as being more towards a Sith than Jedi. I suppose it could be called a Grey Jedi.

@@Gaxelle Yes for sure, it is too bad. I really wonder if after what Anakin did at the temple he resigned himself as being a complete away lost soul not able to be redeemed. I think the combination of the words from Luke and the years of so called training that the Emperor was and was not training him to be his replacement. But just a toadying lap dog. I truly believe the suit that Anakin was wearing was worse than just something to keep him alive. I believe very strongly that the suit also kept him captive and was a very painful existence. He couldn't just walk away from Palpatine. He sure couldn't return to being a Jedi in his mind. As well that the way the Emperor was explaining about the Jedi and Anakins own losing faith in the Jedi's made that perfect storm. I remember the first time watching this. The emotion of each scene and the knowledge of how it fit into the universe of each character from Maul to Ezra and the rest. Seeing Vader clashing with Ahsoka and this seeming to be the death of her from the Clone Wars days. I remember people not really liking this young tween character. But as it evolved and grew and as she adapted to the whole universe a lot of the people who didn't like her now they see the importance of what Lucas was doing and how important it is for her to have been there. Hopefully the Mandalorian will have a live action version of her.

I found your channel yesterday and I've just been binge watching all your Rebels reactions, I love them! I remember the pain of having to wait months and months for the next season to come out (and I think in season 1 when they're trying to save Kanan right at the end Hera says "it's where Jedi go to die" in part 1, they didn't show part 2 the next week and I had to wait ages, aaaah it killed me) but in the end it was worth it. It's nice to see them immediately after though xD I'll keep watching your reactions, I'll probably watch your other star wars reactions as well :)

She wins this duel on points. Vader/Anakin tended to lose the big fights, he was a bit of a flattrack bully, against the inexperienced ones like Kanan, but anyone half-decent would give him trouble.

I watched the finale for the first time with my mom when it first came out. She remembered when I was little and saw the clone wars movie and when I used to watch the first two clone wars seasons a lot, so she 100% recognized Ahsoka and Anakin and knew their relationship. The only thing I had to tell her was that she left the Jedi order. The only other Rebels episode she had seen was Shroud of Darkness and Mystery of Chopper Base so she got a feel for all the new characters. When we went into the finale we both had NO idea it would be that dark, crazy, and fucking intense. When Ahsoka fan begins Vader and sliced open his helmet we both audibly gasped (and we’re not very loud movie goers either, we kinda keep quiet). The moment when they just stare at eachother for 15 seconds was my favorite part because both of us had NO idea where it was leading to? Is she gonna die? Wtf is happening? Then when she pushed Ezra away and they flew off and saw Rex’s reaction along with Vader walking out our jaws dropped. Absolute awe. Was it a force ghost, was it her? Where is she going? Holy fuck Kanan is blind. I think the finale also had a MASSIVE impact to me as a Star Wars fan because not only was it a very lore expanding episode, bringing many Legends aspects such as Malachor, Sith Temple, possibly Darth Traya in the holocron, Maul back, Vader fighting Ahsoka, etc. But it also had this emotional impact I didn’t expect. I jumped into Rebels during like the 4th or 5th episode of season 2. I had a feeling the show was going to reach clone wars heights (and it did), but I still didn’t really have a reason to watch it during season 1. Even then, when I caught up, I had to wait every week with additional hiatuses for each episode. And when I got to this finale, it just blew me away. It’s my favorite piece of Star Wars media EVER.

One of the best episode of not just Rebels but in all of anime. Some of the best lines and animation are in this one episode. Ezra -" I don't fear you." Vader -" Then you will die braver than most." Epic comeback. And then the best line of all. Vader -" Revenge is not the Jedi way." Ashoka - " I am no Jedi!" DAME RIGHT! You tell him Ashoka! I still get chills watching that whole scene. And the animation of her running up on Vader...Perfection.

So both times that I mentioned Inquisitor sabers being a way to compensate for a lack of actual skill, you have no idea how hard it was not to include a cheeky addendum of "A skilled fighter, like Maul or Kenobi, would tear through them with ease." Grievous arguably has many more tricks that the Inquisitors do, and Kenobi fought him almost to a standstill dozens of times. Maul rips through the Seventh Sister's force defenses like it was nothing, and that was game over. Maul and Ahsoka were both able to overwhelm the Fifth Brother's saber defenses, and giving Maul an opening like that is a death sentence. The ultimate example of this point is Pre Visla, who went one on one against Obi-Wan, Ahsoka, and Maul back in the Clone Wars, and all 3 of those fights lasted longer than the Inquisitors did. He had some fancy tricks too, but what he had that the Inquisitors sorely lacked was the skill to use those tricks effectively. Not many people can say that they managed to disarm Darth Maul.
