I read someone's comment that "The Thrawn Trilogy" (Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, and The Last Command) would have been a better trilogy to film. It uses the common core of SW characters but added to them in a natural outgrowth of the original series combining the familiar with the new into a skillful story. After I finished the trilogy I realized why the person's comment was so very true. Ryan's analysis reaffirms it.
@LTBudd3 жыл бұрын
The Thrawn Trilogy would have worked as a sequel had they made that sequel trilogy shortly after RotJ. It, however, was fan service, just like the Rey Trilogy was. The Rey Trilogy is meant to end a chapter, not only for the Star Wars story, but in the transfer of the Star Wars franchise from Lucas to Disney. The biggest problem behind the Rey Trilogy is that there wasn't a single vision behind it. The Thrawn Trilogy was written by one person, based on some of the lore that existed in the Star Wars expanded universe that had yet to be on screen. It was, however, one vision from start to finish. The first trilogy was one vision. The prequel trilogy was one vision. The Rey trilogy was film by committee. It doesn't help that J.J. Abrams was involved.

Quite simply, the original trilogy works because Lucas was extremely passionate about making it and at the same time was extremely passionate about not making a “corporate movie.” Lucas wanted to buck the system while making the original trilogy of movie studios becoming huge conglomerates that emphasized making money through polling fans rather than telling good stories. By the time of the prequels, Lucas had become one of the conglomerates, though one of a somewhat smaller scale, that he fought against earlier. It goes without saying that Disney is one of those major conglomerates, if not the top one. That is why Rise of Skywalker retconned The Last Jedi because Disney thought by pleasing the vocal critics of The Last Jedi that they could maximize their return. It’s a shame because I would’ve liked to have seen the conclusion of what The Last Jedi set up.

This is exactly the point I've been making since TLJ came out. At what point in TFA did she ever say she wanted her family to be a big deal? Plus, finding out she was a Skywalker would probably be worse, because she's now got a legacy to live up to and that would scare anyone. This was literally RJ doing a fourth wall break. The same with the line Kylo made about her not belonging in the story. It sounds clever at first, unfortunately it's yet another fourth wall break, which unintentionally and subconsciously tells the viewer that she quite literally doesn't belong in the Skywalker saga.

Whereas in The Force Awakens, she starts crying after Maz Kanada tells her: "Whomever you're waiting for on Jakku - they're never coming back." To me, that gives me the sense that her parents might be dead or something. Because I've always imagined that her parents were secretly war heroes who left her behind on Jakku to keep her safe. Plus, I always like to think that Kylo Ren was lying to Rey about her parents, just to make her feel weak. I wouldn't have thought he was necessarily telling the truth. What I would've like to see in Rise of Skywalker, was Rey actually investigating what happened to her parents, rather than what we actually got in the final film.

@Jedi_Cowboy3 жыл бұрын
The problem with TFA was it wasn’t creative at all. Finn was a good character. They should have let us and him know he had the Force. He could have been trained as a Jedi by Luke and the focal point with Rey. I recently rewatched the first scene of TFA where we meet Finn and Kulo Ren. As Ren walks back to his ship he stops and they stare at each other. Why?! That was The Force Awakening! It makes complete sense. JJ dropped the ball. In TLJ, Kennedy went to USC film school and asked the professors who they really liked, they said Oh that R.Johnson kid was a good student, check out his work. What happened then? We got an art and critical thinking piece of garbage that didn’t belong in SW. The decision to make Luke a coward and run and refuse helping his sister was absolutely out of character and wrong. Just read the opening crawl of TFA, Leia is desperately searching for her brother Luke to come help her. He would never abandon her in her desperation. Then RJ has the audacity to put in the original ”Help me Obi-Wan” recording that basically kicks of the entire SW universe (1st film) because Luke intrinsically wants to help but still have Luke refuse. That inflection by RJ was terrible. I’ve been around over 40 years and know many people that long -peoples’ characters don’t change that dramatically. Ask yourself, how many people do you know well that would act so out of character (outside of drugs or a terrible illness)... RJ didn’t understand SW and was not a fan. Just look at the love the cast and crew have poured in to The Mandalorian and the stuff they say to the fans and even Mark Hamill about how important he was to their childhood. RJ was just like FU Hamill to his face. Disgrace. Was TLJ a departure from the other movies, yes, but in only because it was an art piece by a guy who didn’t give a flying fuck about the source material. Case in point the scene where we see the plants grow. Why in the fuck?! I see shit like that all the time from film school students when I walk student art galleries. This was supposed to be SW! Now we come to TROS. It was an absolute mess. It was so disjointed I thought I was watching a Chinese contortionist performing for the Queen of England. It did try to fix some of the crap from TLJ, but again JJ isn’t a very good story teller. The decisions he and Terrio made, took, and poorly executed were so out of place it made me fell like I dropped acid after I walked out. Hell the movie was so visually jolting and all over the place it was like they were trying to make you forget how bad the story was by having you have to shake your head and refocus your eyes ever 50 seconds. The fact that Rey chooses to become a Skywalker, despite the fact that theme of the whole film seemed to be that your lineage doesn’t matter, irritates me to this day. She should have proudly accepted that she’s a Palpatine and made the name mean something completely different to future generations.
@gregbasore21083 жыл бұрын
Solid breakdown. Also, Palpatine could have worked as the new villain if Abrams and Terrio had been more patient and not blown their wad right out the gate. The opening crawl should have hinted at an important message that would change everything, and then the whole crew hears the audio message when Po and Finn get back to base. From there, the rest of the first act and most of the second, should have centered on the question "Is it true?" We should have been witnesses to the ultimate game of "ratz in a maze" with Rey and Kylo both desperately searching for the, hoping to get it first. Both of them wondering "Is this a trick, or has he really returned? If so, how?" Just like one movie ago, their mutual problem is solved together. It's only by sharing their info and connecting their powers that they can unlock the final obstacle to the way finder, and it'll only work if both of them in close proximity. Palpy doesn't show up on screen till the end of Act Two, as the stage is set for the final conflict. When they confront him, we get some kind of actual answer to how he's gotten over being dead. Any explanation, I don't care how smart or stupid, but something ON SCREEN has to be said. "Clones. You guys know I invested heavily in cloning right? There was, like, a whole war about it and everything. Cloning is, just, totally dark side." whatever, but give us an actual damn answer in the moment. At this point, with or without the "she's my granddaughter" back pedal, the story's still stronger, just for having Palpatine's emergence get some build up. If the grand baby reveal is ditched, go with something like; "The prophecy of the Force Being Balanced is not a single, solitary event. It is a cycle, that begins and ends and begins again. Each cycle mirrors the others, but new glints of light and shades of darkness emerge each time. This time, the chosen one, is the chosen two. One champion of light and one of dark. Each can tip the balance one way or the other. Each can embrace either side of the force. Each can be the song that calls the tune of destiny! Now... you must choose. Who will Rise... Who Will Fall? Which shall rule... Light or Dark? Love or Hate? Generosity or Greed? Compassion or Malice? Choose, but choose quickly, for the choice may not be yours for much longer!" Cut to Rey and Kylo locking eyes and... we have stakes and emotional investment and something the audience would be on the edge of their seat itching to see play out.

Awesome analysis. I'd be interested to hear more about how to think episode 9 could have continued after the last jedi, without just retconning everything. Actually recover from what sucked about TLJ, but keep the good aspects of the character development.
@nathandts34013 жыл бұрын
The only thing that sucked about TLJ was the length and it's only that long because it had to do two films worth of character development after TFA only seemed to concern itself with Han. I'd happily see RoS completely rewritten, but for the sake of simplicity a minor tweak would have turned the movie from bad to okay. Replace Palpatine with some 2000 year old Sith, axe the Rey's parents thing, Snoke was also a couple thousand years old; they're Sith that escaped the Rule of Two. Gets rid of the two worst plot points in 9, doesn't change the rest of the plot and is a gateway to the Old Republic whenever Disney wants to explore that.

There was no need to acknowledge this. Luke told her that Vader is his father and then told Leia that she is his sister. So everyone with a brain can come to the conclusion. Filoni and Favreau are proving to everyone that the last 3 films were way over thought and should just go away and be canned. The Force Awakens could have been good if the 2 following it had not been so bad, there was no over arching plan for the 3 movies, The Last Jedi strayed from the core by destroying Luke and the last one to try and fix it rather than tell a story. We did not need subversion for The Last Jedi, it would have been perfectly fine to have Rey be the twin of Kilo (this makes waaaaaaay more sense for the Kilo/Rey connection and discovery of each other) Is it predictable, sure, but sometimes fans are ahead of the story, nothing can be done about that. The story should have been about how Leia and Luke were afraid of what Han and Leia's offspring could do and thus "try" to protect w/ a plan. Tell Han Kilo is the only child, hide Rey off somewhere else to be raised and watched over by trusted people, just in case....rhymes. Write from that point of view and now you can tell stories. You can still have the dissolve of the Han/Leia's relationship as they differed on sending their only son off to be a Jedi, especially as they, by that time, would have known the story of Vader and Luke and the dangers of the Dark Side of the force. Luke and Leia wanting Kilo to be trained and Han against it. Real conflict that makes sense as to why Han/Leia would be apart and have to reconcile, Han discovering his daughter only after having kinship and adventures w/ her too late as he give his life to now protect her against his fallen son/ her brother. If I can see this, those films should have been better when done by "professionals". Thus the disappointment in the overall fan base w/ the last 3 movies. (PS we so desperately wanted them to be good, is that wrong?)
@Jedi_Cowboy3 жыл бұрын
He would never abandon her. Then RJ has the audacity to put the original”Help me Obi-Wan” recording the basically kicks of the entire SW universe (1st film) and still have Luke refuse. Disgrace. Was TLJ a departure from the other movies, yes, but in only because it was an art price by a guy who didn’t give a flying fuck about the source material. Case in point the scene where we see that plant grow. What a disappointment the sequel trilogy turned out to be.

Honestly, I think the sequel trilogy validated Lucas's announcement in 2005 that he wouldn't do a 3rd trilogy, because he realized along the way, that the saga was really Anakin/Vader's story this whole time and that story concluded in ep VI. He originally talked about 9 episodes, because it might for a nice set. Three stories, each in three parts. A trilogy composed of trilogies as it were. But once he got finished with second trilogy, he realized that was all the story that needed to be told. Sure, he was gearing up to do a 3rd set before the Disney buy out offer, but all the ideas mentioned about "The Whills" and "Midichlorians" sounded like hitting high gear on all the lore explaining, mystery deflating stuff that hamstrung the prequels. There was probably a bit've "I wanna prove the haters wrong" in there too. He maybe wanted to show off his brain's dick size and prove that episodes IV, V and VI weren't his last great movies. The real failing the sequels isn't even in the directions the plot went in or didn't go in. It really comes down to a matter of not having something to say about the times we live in. The OG trilogy was informed by Lucas's views of the Vietnam War and how it impacted his country and the lives of his friends and family. The Prequels were about the rising surveillance state and crumbling of our government as a functional entity and the fears people had about guys like G.W. Bush. What the hell is the sequel trilogy about? It's about Star Wars movies and how fans view them. It starts off with "Boy, Star Wars sure was awesome. I want another one." follows with "Ya know, the Star Wars formula sure is getting stale, let's try something new!" and ends with "Straying from formula is bad and we shouldn't do it again. Let's go back to the formula and take a double dose this time!" There's no earthy texture under the mythic fluff, like Lucas had. There's just fluff on fluff on fluff, all the way down.

I feel obliged to mention, the scuttlebutt is that Abrams/Terrio weren’t going to bring Palpatine back. Originally Abrams conferred with Lucas and the plan was for The Son of Mortis to be the ultimate evil. That’s why the Sith Dagger is so prominent and Matt Smith was cast. However, Bob Eiger himself nixed it at some point during principal photography saying - no one is going to know who this guy is!!! So Abrams had to scramble. I actually thought the Palpatine could have worked really well if it was actually built up to from the beginning rather than an eleventh hour decision. If the latter had been true, like you said, it would have explained how ridiculously powerful she was. I'm a sucker for stories about people overcoming their circumstances to choose a different path in life. I feel like the way to have done it would be to have it not be a reveal -- have Rey start off as a Sith, and then move to the light. It could have been a fun riff on the prequels but in reverse. Though I guess that would have been too ballsy for Disney. When you watch A New Hope, there all these nuggets in that film hinting to Luke's parentage, like the exchange between Owen and Beru -- "He's just not a farmer, Owen. He has too much of his father in him." "That's what I'm afraid of." -- And how Alec Guiness portrayed Obi-Wan like the prequels already existed, especially when he was telling Luke about his father. George Lucas was a brilliant storyteller and did such a wonderful job of creating this world. The prequels are flawed films, but had at least had a vision, interesting and compelling characters, and add to the originals. I don't care what anyone says, I love Anakin and Hayden Christensen's portrayal of him, but I digress. The fact is, these movies are bad because they don't have a creative reason for being. They were made for money and to cash in on nostalgia. The first six films came from George Lucas' heart and soul, and spoke to universal truths about humanity and family and how one person can make a difference even though you might come from humble origins. THAT'S why people love these movies. These new ones could have been good. They're just so hollow, and they don't add anything of value to the canon. And don't even get me started on Palpatine's resurrection and how in doing that the filmmakers of this movie shat on Anakin Skywalker's grave. (Yes, I know Anakin is not a real person. My point stands.)

Since then I've heard some folks say that Leia had some kind of special bond with Padme through the Force. But I'm more inclined to believe that Leia is just confused here. Due to the secrecy in keeping her from Vader, I wonder if Bail and his wife even told Leia she was adopted. This would mean that the revelation from her brother would be even more shocking. As much as I didn't like TLJ, i think the waffling and retconning in Rise of Skywalker made things so much worse, as a movie and as a Star Wars movie specifically. Really great video. It makes so much sense, especially at the end where you summarize the reasons episode 9 failed. But I will say this; despite the fact the JJ made a very bad ending to a trilogy, I really don't blame him. He basically took the helm of a burning ship and said, "I'll do what I can." He took on the project after other great directors wouldn't, knowing that he had to serve a broken fan base. He was given a short amount of time not only to make this movie but write the script from scratch. He was set up for failure from the moment the powers that be decided to "wing it" on the most important trilogy in history and not have a game plan for the entire arch of the story before filming the first shots! Could ROS have been better? 100% yes. Could JJ have done better? Probably not. JJ has never been much of a closer. He's always been able to open a story with some great questions but not bring stories to a satisfying ending. Lost is just one example.

Th great thing about Luke in ROTJ is that he is strong emotionally and psychologically. That is why he wins. He was never the best Jedi as far as his powers. But he was the one who ccould withstand the schemes and manipulation of the emporer. So it is not that there is no manipulation of that the Emporer was not mind controlling Anikan and others on the dark side. And even Yoda, Ben Kenobe etc. as far as they could not understand what the Palpatine was doing or really how to stop him. Only Luke could withstand Palpatine and knew there was still good in Vader. Luke was the only one who knew how to defeat Palpatine and had the emotional fortitude to do it. Everyone else was somewhat clueless (even Yoda and younger Luke) or gave in to Palpatine's manipulation like Anikan. That is why I liked the transformation of Anikan to Darth Vader in Revenge of the Sith (although it might be too sudden of a change). Anikan was beaten down by Palpatine not because he was not a super powerful Jedi with a lot of cool skills. He was all that and more. But Anikan was weaker than Luke where and when it counted. Luke was a man while Anikan was a perpetual kid. Luke was the true hero that transcended even the physical fights. The last battle with Palpatine in ROTJ was more of a psychological victory than one of raw brute force. AS I have grown older I have grown to love that about Star Wars (original trilogy). We worship athletes, politician, or leaders because they are powerful. Lucas made the hero a man. Luke was the hero that showed a real man, or a real hero (whatever sex) could be powerful because of their convictions and virtue. This was awesome. The sequels destroyed this. Rey was perfect from the beginning. She never had to grow. Boring. No moral development. Boring.

Along with maybe Luke’s wife being trained as a jedi along side them or in flashbacks to have been the one to eventually leave the new jedi order and become the new sith order. Or something
