The whole Sequel Tragedy was poorly written, unplanned and had complete disregard for the franchise and the fans. Despite many flaws (another old decrepit guy seducing a young Skywalker to the Dark Side, Starkiller Base… which I thought was overkill until we got 10 gazillion Super Death Star Destroyers… Rey being instantly awesome at everything, zero world building etc.), The Force Awakens could have still been salvaged by someone who gave a $#!+ about Star Wars… but we got Ruin Johnson instead.

Even hearing the breakdown of the plot of Endgame, hearing the storylines and significant plot points, it just took me back to the first time I watched Endgame and emotion swelled up. The first time i watched Endgame, I literally cried. A grown man crying, watching a movie with his son. Why? I was 12 when Iron Man was released, I am now 25. I grew up with the MCU. When Endgame was released, my son was 5 and we got so hype together. I felt every Easter egg and connection they showcased in Endgame. It literally felt like this huge, beautiful ending to one ENORMOUS story that I've been following for half of my life. But watching this, I literally felt my chest beating and getting heavy as Ryan kept explaining the movie and upping the stakes and I just felt the weight of the movie while watching THIS video. *THAT* is how you know the Russo brothers have created an absolute *masterpiece* with Avengers Endgame. They did the impossible with Endgame, and it can be replicated, but that feeling will never be duplicated. The first franchise to achieve something like this, with multiple franchises trying but failing. Like Rise of Skywalker.

I have no problem saying that Endgame is a masterpiece and I don’t feel that way about any other comic book based film. Closest would be Dark Knight, and the one other masterpiece in the fantasy action genre in the last 10 years is Mad Max: Fury Road. Endgame takes chances and has lots of depth that the other MCU film’s don’t have. Most of the complaints about the film are quite shallow: People don’t like Thor getting fat, Professor Hulk evolving, or characters dying, or Steve Rogers getting old. Basically *nothing real* should happen, so they can keep watching film equivalent of a cartoon aimed at 7 year olds…which they’ve apparently never outgrown. Lol.

The other comparison that shows why rise of skywalker doesn't work is LOTR: Return of the King. It has a very similar, all hope is lost scene when the army of Rohan shows up. But, it's not a surprise like in Endgame. In ROTK, you know help is on the way for a long time like in ROS. Yet, it really, really works.
@Skull1Hunter2 жыл бұрын
Even though the Rohan army is confirmed to be on the way, there is still tension there. It's not a question of "will Rohan help?" but instead "will Rohan arrive in time to make a difference?" Even after they arrive, they realize they're outnumbered, yet still fight to save Gondor. Those are why, I believe it works in Return of the King.

18:30 - I think this is actually the most compelling point. Cap never surrenders and is ready to die fighting the good fight. Meanwhile Po, in a franchise that glorifies *hope*, gives up at the 11th hour. 20:12 - The big difference between these moments is that "Activate instant kill" makes sense 100% in that moment, and also happens to be a fan-service reference. Chewie getting a medal makes no sense in the context of its own movie. It's literally just there for fans.
@kevinphiggins3 жыл бұрын
The Chewie scene works because he didn’t get a medal, he got *Han’s* medal. It was a treasured keepsake from his dead best friend, and a reminder of when they first met the rest of their found family and saved the galaxy. The rest of the movie still sucks though

more importantly, that Cap scene was told ALL THROUGH VISUALS. Allof Thanos' army teleport to the ground, Cap gets up, grits his teeth, and we see a stunning vista of one man against an entire army. The shot when Sam calls him, he is walking as if almost to his certain death.

The problem is that Return of the Jedi wrapped up the Skywalker saga perfectly even including all the prequels and shows etc. The entire sequel trilogy was useless in the first place because it just said “hey you know everything that our heroes worked to overcome in the original trilogy? I love both franchises, very much, for different reasons. I had two very strong reactions to both scenes when I saw them in theaters. For the Avengers Endgame, all is lost moment, I was so sucked in that you could've sold me a years supply of estrogen and I probably would have bought it. Whereas with Star Wars, I was so dejected and uninterested that I just wanted it to end already. During Endgame when everyone showed up, it was unexpected, and I was on the verge of tears, I had the same reaction as Ryan like "LETS FUCKING GO, ITS ON NOW". Whereas with Star Wars, I think I audibly groaned in the theaters and rolled my eyes, it just felt forced. One was earned and the other took shortcuts. It also didn't help that Endgame came out 6 months prior to Star Wars, so it kinda felt like "this has been done already". The last time we really had a good "all hope is lost" only to be saved at the 11th hour scene, before Endgame came out was probably in the LOTR series, both in ROTK in the battle of Minas Tirith and TTT in the battle of Helms Deep.

Let's hope Filoni and Favreau stay on the franchise long enough to redeem the Sequel Trilogy with quality retroactive continuity stories the way they did the Prequel Trilogy.
@vetarlittorf18073 жыл бұрын
The difference is that the prequel trilogy by itself is already better than the sequels, mainly because Lucas formatted and mapped it from the beginning, the visuals are more creative and the characters are more likable (especially Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon and Palpatine). The only problem was that Lucas doesn't work well with actors and often fails to make conversations sound natural. Also, Filoni didn't redeem the prequels. The whole TCW is basically a reboot of the Clone Wars multimedia project that ran from 2002-2006. And Filoni already had a chance to redeem the sequels with Resistance but he failed.

The sock puppet JJ; my insides are a pretzel. Great comparison, Ryan! Endgame is one of my favorite films of all time, and ROS…. Womp womp. Mind you all, I was a much bigger Star Wars fan growing up than Marvel, but having grown up with the MCU and watched Star Wars implode, the tables have turned. I’m still a huge sucker for the originals, prequels, and legends though. But boy, nothing gets me hyped like the next MCU film.

The whole "You were a spice runner??" bit still kills me, tho. But I see your point, Ryan.

Great video, but... Dang, holding your cat instead of Doug at the end of the video was a dark way to leave things!

Why Endgame’s use of fanservice works and Why Rise of Skywalker’s doesn’t: - endgame’s portal scene worked because it took years of buildup and the Russos had a unified vision. Rise of Skywalker didn’t have a unified vision, as Abrams and Johnson kept on switching positions movie after movie - endgame, unlike TROS, had characters we actually care about - Iron Man’s sacrifice worked because it was emotional, it made sense for the character. Rey’s “sacrifice” felt like a ripoff of Tony’s - cap wielding Jonathan worked because it highlighted his determination. Rey calling herself a Skywalker didn’t because it was forced.

The Cap/Thanos battle in Endgame, especially the shield strap tighten before the hero return calls back to the original comics where Cap says " As long as one man stands against you, Thanos, you’ll never be able to claim victory. ”

Hahah I loved this video. Great job of breaking down the differences. BUT shame on you for abandoning Doug and instead holding ‘Cat’ at the end. We don’t even know Cat’s name. Shame shame lol

When you were talking about endgame dust sand I cried so much. I love star war but the new “ star war” is a bunch of s if you have to watch that as your first star wars movies I feel so bad for you get Disney plus and watch the reals ones.

You want to know how good endgame was, i had goosebumps the entire time he was re-telling the story whereas i never felt even an ounce of emotion while watching the rise of Skywalker

Rise of Skywalker felt like an Endgame ripoff bc the “I am all the Jedi” scene stole from “I am Iron Man”

Ryan, honestly, Disney should hire you as a production consultant. Contractor work for Star Wars and Marvel. You have great theories and honestly, your prominence on KZbin shows that you have your finger on the pulse of the fandoms. They would gain so much by at least consulting with you or your peers on scripts to see what kind of thing the fans are really looking for. Obviously I can see how that could affect your content on the channel, but for real, you could make these movies and shows better.

It was sad to see Star Wars go out like that,with none of the magic from the original movies. I saw the original when I was 7 years old and Rise of Skywalker hurt.

Only miss in Endgame was there was no Hulk vs. Thanos rematch. Cap could have been training Banner how to fight . A prolonged fight Thanos vs. the Hulk would have brought the house down. How they missed that is beyond me.

I have to admit that I do love both Endgame and Rise of Skywalker. Yes, Endgame is waaaaay better emotionally driven and ends with such a gut punch and there was no dry eye in the IMAX cinema where I saw it. With RoS yes it is sloppy and yes it rambles around to the big ending which should have had the force ghosts appear and help Rey. But it's Star Wars and it's fun. If you don't like it as you claim Ryan then ok. But your vid makes some great points. So thanks

Amazing analysis and comparison and exactly my feelings. I don't think there was any way that they were going to drag out the Skywalker franchise for three more films without it feeling like a cash grab. There's SO MUCH potential in the Star Wars universe for some great stories and compelling characters, as well as some great action set-pieces that move away from the overplayed climaxes that felt overplayed even when ROTJ recycled it from ANH.

You missed pointing out one great piece of acting. When Cap sees T’challa walk out, there’s relief and then sadness. “He’s alive.” Then “I don’t have to die alone.” then into “He’s going to die with me.” It’s a masterclass moment.
