It was only one exchange, and the yellow ranger didn’t get in on the swinging but it was still way better than this garbage . The point stands that it’s possible to make a 3 on 1 sword exchange work, but because that fight scene was choreographed by people who knew what they were doing, two or three of the rangers get knocked away so the choreography can stay fluid and fast without huge gaps like in this garbage

The number of times Smilo Ren doges head shots, when the helmet would have just deactivated the lightsaber if it made contact, is insane. He is actively trying to not take full advantage of his armor, in order to extend the fights.
@balintkovacs4089
@balintkovacs4089 2 ай бұрын
He does indeed spare his helmet as much as possible, but for a reason that is only explained by him after the helmet breaks. Its primary purpose is to block the Jedi from sensing his thoughts and intentions through the Force. That subconscious precognition is what their whole combat technique is based around from duelling to deflecting blaster shots. Since a cortosis helmet would break from repeated lightsaber strikes, Qimir prioritized being able to surprise his opponents even if it meant a longer fight, rather just using it to overpower 2-3 Jedi then be left telepathically vulnerable when there were still more living than dead Jedi.

Repeated lightsaber strikes have been shown in the comics as something capable of eventually breaking a cortosis ore boulder. Compared to that, even this relatively thick helmet which doesn't even have the impurities of being raw ore anymore - which ironically would physically reinforce it - would have given in if Qimir used it for every attack against him. Of course the number of attacks would decrease as the jedi's number went down but even so there were three of them - Sol, Jecki and Yorm - whom he had to separate from the others in order to easily kill.

Also for power scaling -Obiwan when he was a padawa: 25 years old and stated ready for the trials. -maul had to separate qui-gon and obiwan in order to have a chance. Struggled with 2 opponents. - padawan Anakin 19 years old and literal force Jesus. faced count duku and got the smoke not once but twice. Lost an arm in the process. - Duku known for being a master duelist also made sure to take out Anakin before facing obiwan to keep the fight 1v1 as much as possible. -Ashoka as a padawan was 14 years old. Later on as she got older and developed as a fighter she faced general grievous and almost died barely running away. She also faced maul by the 7th season where she was 17 but went through years of training from the chosen one Anakin skywalker and grew up during a time of war which fast tracked her experience gain greatly. Now for the acolyte -jacki stated by the show to be mid teens so 14 years old. During a time of peace and has next to no experience. Goes toe to toe with what’s her face who killed 2 masters and a Sith Lord who is stronger than duku and maul based on his feats alone. -smilo Ren since this takes place 100 years before episode 1 and palpatine is 52 during episode 1 then this guy is around 48 years before palpatine is born. That being said he is one of 3 people seeing as he is a Sith and stated to be. 1) he’s Darth Plagues (Disney would change his race to human cause they’re dumb). 2) he’s darth plagues master. 3) he’s darth plagues apprentice before palpatine. By all rights this makes him stronger than maul and duku. So a girl her age with no experience going toe to toe with this guy is like having season 1 Ashoka fight off palpatine and doing very well. Which is dumb as fuck.

An annoying issue with this era of Jedi is that they seem to hold to a non-lethal honor system. Sort of reminiscent to the guard rules we had in the military. Where we couldn’t even do so much as load our weapons except under certain conditions (like others or yourself were facing an imminent risk or severe bodily injury or death) unless if we had orders otherwise. And even then, we were only to shoot to subdue the suspect, not to maim or kill. And if we were to missed, then we would have to search for all expended rounds pending a possible investigation. Which I assume will happen here. And poor Yord was like; “I don’t understand why he doesn’t play by the rules and follow proper form.” No wonder why he and the rest of red shirt Jedi went down so fast.

@@eds1942 does this non lethal honor system actually exist in universe at any point in the high republic or even in the legends universe? curious cause I know Jedi are peaceful negotiators, but will kill if lives are in danger and there is no other choice (such as a Sith clearly trying to kill Jedi)

@@fusionwing4208 The High Republic era as well as the 18,000 years between the raise of the Sith following 7,000 bby and the formation of the Jedi Order and the Republic, the Jedi practices and history is largely unexplored, aside for these eras being relatively peaceful in comparison to their wars with the Sith or the wars of the movies or even during the Yuuzhan Vong and Mandalorian wars. So the Jedi mostly practiced peace keeping and mediation and justice, again in contrast to the Jedi that we saw in the movies, games, novels and comics where they are waiting to pull out their lightsabers for anything, even bugs and trouble makers at the local bar. It’s probably the reason why in the Legends EU continuity of the Old Republic era, people often associated Sith and Jedi as two factions of the same religion, as too often Jedi had turned into Sith and started galaxy spanning wars. As well as why commoners so quickly lost faith in the Jedi during and after the Clone Wars seeing them too often as just military leaders who brought war to their sectors or home worlds. Where as Jedi are supposed to gaurdians against all out war and be the champions of the people. Which at times put them at odds with the Republic during its Pias Dea era in Legends.

@@TenToAceStudios I fall mostly into that category, as well. smiling until I get a moment to think about it. I would say, though, that I prefer it to be 'realistic' to the setting. You kind of expect posing and 'powering up attacks' in the Dragon Ball universe (especially teen Gohan, hahahah). Star Wars in 1-6 was a bit more grounded in that respect. Blade strikes were mostly parries and intercepts of attempted body strikes (though extended binds occurred, and, in my opinion, pointless) . Most strikes were visibly intended to hit the opponent or environment for a purpose. The lightsaber is supposed to be an effectively weightless weapon, so quick strikes to disable or eliminate make sense. Heavy , full strength swings that overbalance, overreach and such less so. Both blades aiming for empty space seems pointless, especially when its Separate points in space. The exception would be such as Obi-Wan's fully defensive portion of his fight with Anakin, as he still hopes to not injure or kill one he considers his brother. The different forms as described in other media are still intended to attack or defend. I did really like the effects for the Coritosis shorting out the blades.

I think the issue with the use of Cortosis here is it’s not given the level of gravitas that it really needs. Usually a story that uses Cortosis will give some exposition of how it’s a rare material and how dangerous it is that the bad guy is using it. Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast, for example, has the Imperial Remnant mention they were smuggling Cortosis, which the player character Kyle Katarn overhears. Then when he asks Luke Skywalker what it is, Luke explains that it’s a rare material that resists lightsabers, planting the seeds in your head that it’s something special and will probably come up later. Then when you finally encounter your first Shadow Trooper wearing Cortosis armor, Kyle will then realize what they’re using it for. It’s given the appropriate weight in the story to show that yes, it is a big game changing thing, and two, it’s rare so that’s why not everyone is using it. And it’s amazing a 2002 video game running on id Tech 3 could pull this off while a big budget TV show from Disney couldn’t. Btw, mentioning Jedi Knight is particularly appropriate since the hilt you have (at least it looks like it to my eyes) is Kyle Katarn’s lightsaber hilt from Jedi Outcast. I love that character. Honestly my favorite in all of Star Wars, EU or movie included.

Or you could introduce it, then explain it later. But people have a tendency to complain either way as handholding or not enough handholding. Back in the late 90’s when it was introduced, it was a fairly new material. But now, I think most of the fans of the expanded material, both canon and legends figured it by the time it was done, purely from the fact that it momentarily shorted out lightsabers and absorbed stun bolts, so it almost goes without saying. Bad writing. There is a lore excuse that could be used, but it should be ignored in this case because it is never explained or physically represented, which is again, bad writing. According to wookipedia, cortosis can be overloaded, and it is very brittle, so there are two separate ways that bracer and helmet can fail on him. 1. Overuse until the bracer or helmet becomes useless and gets cut through anyway. Maybe the energy would dissipate over time, but the writers would have to show that visually (sparks, a glow, something) in order to use that excuse. 2. Breaking because the metal can't take the stress of repeated impacts.

@nahlannentrela5376 2 ай бұрын
in the original EU, Cortosis was very rare, brittle and fibrous. It was dangerous to mine as it usually held charge which discharged violently, lethally, on anyone that touched it. It always was energy resistant, so plasma cutters and typical mining tools were useless for extracting it, meaning they had to bring in specialized solid equipment to harvest the mineral, which usually wore their tools out rather quickly when trying to extract it. Basically, it was one of the most annoying things to gather, and very specialized in function. Finding enough of it to make a solid piece of metal would indeed have a much more stable and Durable object that could outperform other metals in defense, but gathering and refining it to that quantity and quality would cost a fortune-or perhaps several fortunes. If this guy is wearing a full helmet and gauntlet made out of solid freaking Cortosis, well...

While that makes some amount of sense, while obviously all that explanation being absent from the series and movies, there would need to be reasons why some characters weren't using it. Like General Grievous would surely be using stuff like this if it was any way obtainable. Since he was working with Palpatine, logistics in itself should not have been a problem enough. Not that we should even spend any energy of trying to make any disney stuff any better. Its destined to fail anyway.

"HAHAHAHAHA, YOU IDIOTS, ITS BECAUSE THE BATTERIES CANT HANDLE THAT AND TECHNOLOGY IS STAGNANT AND HASNT GOT THAT FAR!!!!!!!" lightsaber whip, tosses that out the window. OH, SO WE COULD OF HAD GIANT CLAYMORE SIZED LIGHTSABERS THIS WHOLE TIME!!!!!!!!!!! activating highspeed into a ship. oh, SO THATS A THING AND WE COULD DONE THAT THE WHOLE TIME?!?!?! The Kortosis existing in and of itself doesn't break the lore. I understand the "why doesn't everyone use it" point to a certain extent, but in the EU kortosis was even more rare and difficult to work with than Bescar. There were only 2 Kortosis mines ever mentioned in the entire known galaxy, and one of them wasn't discovered until the middle of the clone wars by the CIS, 110 years after this show takes place. All other criticisms of the scene surrounding the use of the Kortosis itself is still valid though. Shoulda deactivated everyone's lightsabers immediately and executed them while they're vulnerable.

The helmet and bracer are not Cortosis weave, but made of Cortosis. If I am not mistaken, in a case of that, what we saw on-screen is correct. Though it should be noted that they are brittle and should be weak to blaster fire and other stuff (I think it is supposed to protect against stun-blasts, though I could easily be wrong there) and last only so-many lightsaber strikes before it is destroyed or is basically useless. As for why it isn’t more prevalent, it is very rare (far rarer than kyber crystals in a general market during the reign of the Galactic Empire). It is supposed to be difficult to turn into sheets and I wanna say it is supposed to be somewhat unstable. 43:06 that would be Nick Gillard. 55:42 could be due to force speed. 1:06:40 for some reason, this makes me think of that “as the founding fathers intended” copy pasta. 1:15:18 if he struck him down at that time, he would have begun his descent to the dark side.

yep. in the books i read with it in it (Vision of the Future and I,Jedi), it was brittle to the point of almost crumbling. some armor incorporated it in the second i mentioned, but it was bulky, and weak to regular blasters and even force-thrown stones, iirc. I'm gonna have reread my Expanded Universe books again soon, I think. Either way it was super rare. Basically only 3 or 4 places had it. (Mostly inside some critical walls). It's smart of the writers to see it as a useful plot device from the old stories, but I don't know if they kept weaknesses necessary to keep it from being world breaking (or invented new ones for the same reason).

Ah yes, spun cortisis ore. I believe it was supposed to be very rare, and usesless for just about everything, but something about it caused it to make a feedback loop in lightsabers, causing them to not cut through and short out. I imagine that while a powerful thing, goven the rarity of the material, kitting out even a special forces group to be difficult, and even with that armor, a non-force user vs a force user isn't a good matchup. I do believe that Vader had cortosis in his hard armor parts like his pauldrons.

To the people who say this is just fiction and therefore realism doesn't matter. Well, let me remind everyone of their english classes and say one of the fundamental elements of fiction is tension. Without tension, there would be no stakes and therefore no thrill or entertainment because we aren't suspended in the idea that these characters are in danger of dying. Yes, you can say that suspension of disbelief makes all these realistic stuff an afterthought, but if you don't ground your stakes in believable scenarios of danger, there is no difference between an actual combat scenario vs sparring with a trainer, at that point you're watching for the flare of back flips and swords clashing than actually being worried for these characters' safety, which is important in a narrative where fighting is involved because you'd expect that they're fighting for their lives.

A few days ago I rewatched the Duel of the Fates, but very slowly. There are some mistakes here and there, but overall it is really awesome. For the most part the actors are attacking in a way that would hit the opponent, Maul uses kicks because he has to block from both sides at once and that's his only option - and that is also what the Jedi are trying to do, attack from two sides at once, and the whole fight has a story to it, of Maul defending and backing off until he separates the Jedi for long enough to do his thing. Oh, and the choreography for all the prequels was done by Nick Gillard, a former stuntman from the OT and a martial artist himself. Wasn't his first time doing choreography either.

While I don't personally go for the intensity of his word choice and volume, he makes valid points as to the coherence of the story and the level of scrutiny (or lack of?) that seems to be given to the action sequences. The lights, sound effects and music is Star Wars. As for the combat, we would expect and appreciate at least meeting, if not hoping, for improvements in the action elements of the franchise. Presumably someone was in charge of the choreography, and while the most expensive or top tier may not be in the budget for the program, it should be a somewhat significant priority, given lightsaber combat's prominence. We shouldn't expect perfection. We can't be legitimately condemned for expecting at least a passing attempt at combat, rather than pure flourishes. The coritosis ore has been used to explain the avoiding strikes at the head and forearm. In fact, in the books (now legends) there were instances of it in use as armor. Rather than avoiding the special armor, the Jedi avoided the target in its entirety. If the shorts was truly the biggest concern, block with one blade, probe for areas without the ore with the other. A duel is not slapping blades at each other and spinning light shows.
@Grandwigg
@Grandwigg 2 ай бұрын
The first time I remember learning of Coritosis Ore was in Vision of the Future by Timothy Zahn, as a brittle ore useless for anything other that shorting out certain circuits used by lightsabers. In I, Jedi by Michael A Stackpole, it was used by one force cult in armor, but was incredibly fragile in that as well. It was not common enough for full armor, either, only a few crucial bits. If a material, tool, or ability is written too powerful, it lessens the impact of the story. That has been one of five common complaints I have heard and agree with in the more recent stories (and several of the Legends stories, such as Luke's power creep in books like the late Dave Wolverton's Courtship of Princess Leia.) I have received a lot of enjoyment from Star Wars in the past, and hope to see more in the future. It seems to be intended for audiences other than me at the moment from a storytelling standpoint, however. (Focus on 'grey', beyond 'good/evil' and such). While this does make it more likely to recognize flaws as I encounter them, I'm not against awareness of them in the stories I do like. Oddly enough, my favorite stores , aside from the 5 Legends Thrawn books, were the X-Wing stories about Rogue and Wraith Squadrons and those characters. The franchise is more than the Skywalkers, and I agree with the comments I have seen that the stories suffered for trying to stay too close. (Such as Acolyte being so close to the Prequel era, and making the need for new characters be the failures of the originals in the Sequel trilogy.) I have other thoughts, but have typed too much as it is, hahaha. I am curious what others think. (hopefully I am thick skinned enough for reasoned disagreement).
