'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Teaser | Vendor: Disney In-House
Disney’s marketing for what is now the biggest domestic movie of all time was surprisingly close to the vest, which clearly paid off. While they call this teaser #2 (and the third and final piece the only trailer) all three were squarely in teaser territory, never revealing much about character and virtually nothing about plot. Far as I’m concerned, the entire marketing campaign succeeded on three words: “Chewie, we’re home.” It was the “come on in, the waters fine” moment for the older fans skeptical of continuing a story from their youth and the younger fans with a bad taste in their mouth from the prequels.
While nothing in this cut hits the visceral high in the first teaser when the Millennium Falcon blasted into frame to the classic John William’s score, there are plenty of memorable shots: the gorgeous opening desert vista revealing the crashed Star Destroyer, Vader’s mangled mask, Luke placing his robotic hand on R2D2, and Kylo Ren Force-handing the screen. Trailers are often a unrealistically big promise for a movie, and here the promise for The Force Awakens was never bigger.
