Anakin: literal child of the force, takes 10 years to learn to control his abilities (and then another 3 as a warrior) and still loses to characters like Count Dooku and Obi Wan. Luke: child of prophecy, barely beats Darth Vader in their second encounter after years of training. Rey: random chick who the force calls to because Kylo needed an opposite, wins against or stalemates Kylo in every encounter despite only having even known about the Jedi for less that a week and performs feats we never saw even Yoda do despite him being a prodigy with 900+ years of experience. SaturnTubes - That's a really good point. And when has Rey shown even the slightest hint of being excited at some personal triumph? Mostly she just looks bored (with her mouth slightly open; now I can't unsee it). That is, when she's not all frowny-faced and angry while berating some male for not being as awesome as she. Kyros - Another good point. He's a good pilot, good enough to get the torpedo into the exhaust port, but he couldn't save Gold Leader. And he wasn't even good enough to survive on his own: both Wedge and Han have to step in and save him from certain death. Rey? Three TIE fighters in one shot, and that was just her warming up.

Before anyone tries to argue with Mark Hamil's point about Jedi not giving up by pointing out that Obi-Wan and Yoda hid for twenty years, there's a big difference. Obi-Wan and Yoda knew there was nothing they could do after Palpatine and Vader destroyed the Jedi Order, so they decided to wait until _a new hope_ presented itself. Notice how Obi-Wan was ready to fly to Alderaan the very instant he saw Leia's message and even asked Luke to come with him, and how Yoda started testing Luke the moment they first met to see if he had the patience to learn to be a Jedi.

Okay, so a character that in 3 other movies served as an optimistic protagonist, who in the last movie believing in a person that everyone else thinks is beyond hope and redemption puts himself in not merely mortal but potentially even worse peril for, is standing next to the bed of his nephew. The son of his dear sister and his best friend of many years. He glimpses a possible future with the Force. And this warm, kind, optimist that has been known to see the good in people you would think had none left, his first instict. IS TO KILL HIS NEPHEW! I'm fucking sorry, what! How was this character change established? What happened prior to this singular event that that was enough to push LUKE FUCKING SKYWALKER TO ALMOST KILL HIS NEPHEW?! "This is Jake Skywalker, this isn't my Luke Skywalker" - Mark Hammil There are numerous ways that they could have tried to explain why Luke is in hiding, and they went with an option that utterly betrays the fans, the character and the Actor that has a passion for Star Wars. I suppose that is an achievemnt indeed.

Oh if he went to hiding because of shame that would have been ideal, but that is not what happened now is it, he specifically said he went there to fucking DIE... Besides this is Luke fucking Skywalker, he would rather have a conversation with Ben rather than kill him, not to mention he did it in the most cowardly way possible: While the kid was asleep and Luke was literary going to staved him in the back! You honestly believe that a man like Luke who could see the good inside the most evil creature in the universe being Darth Vader, who was more of a Hitler than bitch Ren there Vader literary killed billions, flooding villages, killing people in hospitals and using the Death Star to wipe out Alderaan.And despite all of that Luke saw the good in him and went out of his way to save his father even if it mean giving up his own life...Not to mention that this is his nephew, his sister and best friend son... Luke cares more about family than anything else... Do honestly believe that he will betray that thing about his character. Besides you said it yourself you are desperate to like this movie... Look sorry but this movie is undefeandable from a professional storytelling point of view, from a Star Wars point of View, and from a movie point of view... You literally have not argument to defend this shitty movie than with your emotional opinions, just like the rest of people who defend this movie... Basically, cosmopolitanism and liberalism are part of the capitalist agenda. Even a bloated welfare state is part of it. (Have taxpayers absorb the costs of low wages.) To be fair, it would be a disservice to Carrie Fisher to let her character have a meaningless death when she has A) died in real life, and B) Leia has always been an important revolutionary character in universe. Like, I am aware it could have been done better, but it's obvious that when making episode 8 Leia wasn't supposed to die, and that when Carrie did die it was already far too late to try to rework the story to incorporate her death while making it one she deserved. Letting her die off screen is obviously out of the equation, so all they had left was her unused scenes from the previous two movies. Which they absolutely have to include somehow, and then she absolutely has to die in a way that honours who she is, but when all they have left are scenes which were never supposed to lead to her death... Basically, the movies were bad. Leia dying as she did was never part of the plan (largely because there was never actually a plan, but if there had been then her untimely death would have been a major blow), but because she did they really had to just try their best to make her major with what they had. I can't fault them for that. Now, how they handled Luke, Han and Chewbacca (who I still believe was treated the worst of the three), that is something worth complaining about.

@grahamlawson4025 жыл бұрын
Very true; a bland or indiscernible personality is definitely one of the most common traits of a Mary Sue. However, Katniss also comes across as a Mary Sue due to her apparent lack of motivation for winning the Hunger Games, aside of course from saving her little sister's life. There's also the fact that she is almost instantly trusted and admired by everyone she meets. Not to mention how Katniss becomes this pure and incorruptible symbol of hope, love, and rebellion against the totalitarian government of her world after winning only one tournament and doing almost nothing to justify that kind of notoriety.
@colers23665 жыл бұрын
Honestly, the books portray her a tad better in this; in the books the author actually makes clear that Katniss is deeply manipulative, cold and oppertunistic. Her inner thoughts actually give her a lot of depth and make clear that she is entirely out for herself and actually thinks things through a lot, and often thinks on the repercussions her murders have. But that still doesn't change that her outward personality is, in both the books and the movies, fucking cardboard.

8:42 there was an important rule in the editing process for the first star wars films that helped them avoid this problem. every new element in a scene was introduced by something before it, so that the audience would always have a sense of familiarity and context while taking in new elements. the droids are introduced by the empire and princess leia scenes, then Luke is introduced after he runs into the droids, who we're already familiar with, and then we meet Obi-wan through Luke, etc. This editing tactic helped make the story easy to follow and made it feel grounded in reality. Everything was connected. The reason this non linear style of editing stands out so much is because it's in a star wars film, where we're unconsciously used to a very different form of storytelling
@antoninuslarpus71072 жыл бұрын
That's a really good point, modern shows/movies in general seem to have hapazard cuts in their editing which makes following the story very difficult and annoying. It's becoming less like a linear progression of events, each of which furthers the plot and more like a puzzle you need to piece together via multiple re-watches to fully enjoy.
@kielbasamage Жыл бұрын
I have been told that quite a few if not all shows and movies in Hollywood practice scrapbooking; they film several cuts and show each individual scene to an audience in a vacuum, and the best picks get Frankenstein’d together and sent to the silver screen. This, obviously, results in storylines that barely make sense, plot hooks being dropped or appearing out of the blue and things being segmented harder than a robot centipede.

@horationelson24406 жыл бұрын
The term Mary Sue was coined because of a star trek comic. In this comic, there was one character, Mary Sue, who was near perfect. Everyone liked her, she had unnatural talents towards anything, she was the youngest starfleet officer in her class, she was top of her class, she was a skilled diplomat, soldier, and engineer, and basically, she was without any real flaws. That was where the term Mary Sue was coined, because a character named Mary Sue existed, and she was disliked because she was too perfect. Mary Sue isn't supposed to be hurtful to women, Mary Sue just means that a character is too perfect. Is Rey too perfect? Yes, she has no conflict whatsoever. She creates the conflict around herself, she is a great fighter out of no skill of her own, she is a great force wielder out of no skill of her own. In TLJ, Snoke even says, the stronger Kylo becomes, the stronger Rey becomes to counter Kylo, since the force craves balance. It makes no sense, but Rey gets stronger, the more Kylo trains. Rey is leaching off of Kylo's troubles, and training. Rey is a Mary Sue.
@horationelson24406 жыл бұрын
I don't know the exact details of the comic, so it might take place in the TNG era. For some reason I thought it was TOS era. Either way, she created the term Mary Sue.
@davidh.49446 жыл бұрын
It wasn't a comic, it was a TOS short story from a 1973 fanzine called "A Trekkie's Tale". You can easily find it online. It's actually only a few paragraphs long and highly satirical. But it perfectly encapsulated the unbelievably flawless wish fulfillment type character that the fandom of that era was growing to hate, and so the name caught on. Since then the term has gained more generalized (and hotly debated) meanings that can apply to pretty much any wish fulfillment, author avatar, or self-insertion character who disrupts the story by her presence. My personal view is that a Mary Sue is basically the result of blatantly obvious author favoritism. A writer's pet, in other words. A Mary Sue unbalances the story, not simply because she is too-perfect, per se, or expertly skilled, or universally loved, or lacks challenges, but because the creator was clearly too emotionally or ideologically invested in the character to give her a believable personality, background, or story arc. She effectively works to tear the audience away from the suspension of disbelief necessary to remain immersed in the story. A Mary Sue doesn't actually have to be flawless, she just has to be _unbelievable_ . Note that there is an element of subjectivity to it. A trait that seems ridiculous to some may seem reasonable to others. And there's no reason a Mary Sue can't still be a _likable_ character. In fact, it's more likely than not, given the way they are usually presented. And BTW, while it is possible for the character to be male, it still is primarily a female trope. It's harder to create a true Marty Stu due to differences in audience expectations for male and female characters in general. The favoritism needs to be even more pronounced and obvious. Wesley Crusher probably being the quintessential example.

Shotgun Pete If her training process had taken as long as Luke's in the OT, wouldn't that just be retreading old ground? And wasn't retreading old ground everyone's problem with Force Awakens?
@shotgunpete51176 жыл бұрын
The problem with Force Awakens is that all it does is hit the same notes with the same type of characters out of nostaliga obligation to please the fans, but for me as a fan that fell flat because the story and characters weren't as compelling and interesting. It uses all the same iconic imagery the same way the prequels copied the originals. I think the problem is mostly that people want a Star Wars movie, it doesn't have to be a copy-paste of the original story. But the elements that made Star Wars great need to be there, such as the magick of The Force. Yoda as a character personified this mysticism so well because he was a mysterious little creature who turned out this great Jedi Master that could do stuff with The Force that Luke couldn't even believe were possible, which is why he FAILED. His character was so much more interesting than Rey's because he had to learn and grow, but you rooted for him to succeed because he was relatable and likeable, despite his flaws. Not having Luke actually TEACH Rey anything made him look like a schmuck, they totally ruined his character just because the plot required him to be secluded on an island *JUST LIKE YODA, HOW ABOUT THAT SHIT* to hit those same notes. But it falls flat because it a)doesn't make sense b)he doesn't even train her c)the whole plot of the last movie started around a map to find him, so why doesn't he wanna be found? The movie just doesn't make any sense and it's not a real Star Wars movie just because it copies the story line of the originals. And her lack of training and ability to just know how to use all the right Force tricks when the plot requires it does make Rey a Marey-Sue character. Which is just delicious irony considering half the "fanbase" consists of college millennials who are pissing themselves with hype and just screaming "MUH SEXISM" when someone correctly points out that all of this does make her a Ma-Rey Sue character. I'm 28 and I already feel I'm getting too old for this shit. Member when watching a Star Wars movie wasn't making a political statement on social issues? The prequels were bad enough on their own merit, but now it's just turning Star Wars into a profit-making commercial circus of fangirling and darkside-tendencies hatred towards Disney for committing necrofelia at a Star Wars open-casket funeral. And all the magick of the original is completely forgotten in these movies, because nobody is learning about The Force anymore, including the audience.

Thank God, I accidentally stumbled upon this masterpiece. I haven't laughed so much already for a long time. I'm glad that, besides me, someone else noticed the purest propaganda in the disney trilogy. This was the main purpose of the company, and of course the money.

So, kill off a character who's actor is still alive while keeping a character whose actor has died......wtf?
@NexusKin6 жыл бұрын
Well, Leia is a woman, and Han and Luke were men, so therefore to serve the Feminazi agenda, both of them had to die. Also, Leia is General Leia now, not Princess Leia, and was the sole head of the Rebellion, while Han and Luke were deadbeat losers who died alone and broken. It's ok, she did just fine without them anyway. She's a strong, independent woman who don't need no man!

Chronocide to be fair, Carrie Fisher died AFTER this movie was filmed. they had no way of knowing she would die. as far as they knew, she would have been there for episode IX.

Rian Round Head has the gun fire from the First Order ships arcing like fucking colonial era cannon balls. Clearly physics, like opening doors to the vacuum of space, isn't in his wheel house. No one will ever convince me this film isn't the very first draft written.

Rian doesn't have a wheel house. I'm pretty sure he doesn't even have "the wheel", now that I think about it.
