Thank you guys for not being your typical fanboy critic and glossing over the flaws of this film. Other movie reviewers, who I follow because Star Wars holds such nostalgia for them, will acknowledge the flaws of this film, and then give the movie a near perfect rating anyway - something they do not do with films outside of the Star Wars universe.
@SamDavies947 жыл бұрын
Well, you can see a trend slipping into the MCU too. I've not seen this Star Wars, and don't plan to. But some of the bigger flaws with the MCU films are overlooked often.

I honestly liked it and I'd give it a Matinee since I've seen it twice now but things that bothered me were The whole reasoning behind Luke's misunderstanding of a dream and Kylo turning and murdering all the jedi did not sit well with me either time viewing the film. Where were the other Knights of Ren? The Finn Rose Hacker Storyline in this film could’ve been CUT ENTIRELY. Every Time they went back to this damn subplot it took me out of the film to be honest and it really irritated me. SNOAK WAS ALL TALK AND NO ACTION! PHASMA was BADASS FOR like 3-5 minutes and then gets the fuckin shaft, She did better than Boba fett And 1 thing I FUCKIN LOATHE in any media is forced romance that comes the FUCK OUTTA NOWHERE with no indication. AND I LOOK, OH BOY thats 1thing I admit. I have HAWKEYE LEVEL VIEWING when coming to that to see if its valid & if its not GET THA F*CK OUT OF HERE. I went in a second time watching this thoroughly the whole thing between Finn and Rose and NOTHING, there was nothing there until the last second when she kissed him. The Kylo Rey thing you knew was going nowhere since he went crazy and did all that foul shit but this GODDAMN. My father even said when we walked out of the theater “I liked the film just fine 4/5 but to be honest adding that new romantic subplot outta nowhere was some stupid ass buuuuullshiit” 😂😂😂😂 And it was, It really didnt need to be there or feel organic. Finn and Rey keep mentioning each other in ways and when you rewatch Force Awakens you see them give each other these caring infatuated looks and I can go on and on

Thanks for the honest review Double Toasted. Some of these other critics calling it a masterpiece or the best Star Wars ever are a bit suspicious. This movie has a lot of issues. I'm not going to spoil anything, but this movie took some rather disappointing directions with the characters. Remember all the unanswered questions in TFA regarding Rey's parents, Rey's unexplained force powers, Snoke's origin, Luke's exile, etc? None of that shit will matter once you see this movie. None of it was done in a satisfying way and I'm honestly less excited for Episode 9 now. These new characters just aren't interesting...

I’m with you guys. Not a good movie, which breaks my heart. There are some great scenes but I too can’t think of anything I want to see in Ep 9 now. I guess Rey in all black being a badass. Turns 5 today! Love the new characters, the various worlds, the creatures, and even how the filmmakers continue to build the storytelling as well as adding to the mythos Even the Force has new elements added to it which is refreshing The color scheme in here is really nice mixing red and white Of course we can’t forget the many inside references and callbacks to the older films as is tradition I really like the moral psychology behind this with many of its themes like mentorship being invigorating and not always having to fight but run instead Warriors can be deified and romanticized, hypocrisy can be hubris, maybe there is no good or evil just morally grey areas, maybe we should let the past die, the true burden of masters is what students grow beyond, there’s always a need to accept imperfection, the only way to get rich is to profit off of war The worst part of the movie is definitely the pacing yet it does try to break away from traditional ‘Star Wars’ formula after every other plot thread has been explored Snoke is also very underutilized in this which is a shame but this is truly the best acting from both the late Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill, they’ve solidified themselves as Leia and Luke for over four decades Luke shows his level of frustration with Rey being empathetic on how to approach the Jedi way of training This movie is definitely polarizing since many will feel it betrays the original canon but also adds new elements although it doesn’t answer all the questions I really appreciate the film for taking risks despite pacing issues and some things not making any sense

Disagree. Rogue One had an inconsistent tone (is it a war film? is it a Star Wars movie? is it bleak? is it hopeful?) thanks to the obviously choppy editing and inappropriate musical cues. Hell, even freakin' Revenge of The Sith was more tonally consistent than R1 was. Not to mention that the plot basically meanders around up until we to get to Scarif.

I'm impressed at the sheer divisiveness these film has. From what I read, older critics and people who have no special attachment to Star Wars are more positive towards it and the people who are attached to Star Wars are less than impressed because it's "too different I think it's hilarious that everyone wanted something different after TFA was seen as "more of the same" and when Rian Johnson makes something totally crazy there is still a lot of complaints. Reminds me how every new Zelda game is hated until another one is announced
@organicstorm7 жыл бұрын
Mo Uddin well, in general just different is not automatically better/good/interesting.. I think the hard core fans who already started hating on tlj wanted "different" in a good way, not just different for the sake of being different. And apparently many of them feel the different they got is not the kind they wanted - so what? They can't complain if they think the film was not good enough? All reviews I have seen agreed that there are pacing issues and the old characters' storylines are questionable. Those seem fair points to dislike about any movie.
@WSPBane7 жыл бұрын
I dont believe too different is a lot of old fans problems. Its how they treated Luke and the OG cast that people have waited 30 years to finally see again together. Mark Hamill was disappointed as well and now we know why.

Mo Uddin I've watched it twice and there are actual problems with this movie like the use of slow motion, the strong melodramatic aspect of some scenes, the brand new abilities of the Jedis that were never heard of before, the whole Finn subplot, the minor role of Rey in the story. There, also, however great scenes and the movies had great qualities despite all its defects...

It's funny that Lorry says that you can tell that Mark Hammill was happy being back in the role of Luke Skywalker. Mark himself says that he wasn't and that he does not consider it to even BE Luke. It saddens me that you guys were so enthusiastic for Rion Johnson's character assassination. These characters were not progressed AT ALL. Han REGRESSED into the person he had been when we first encountered him, as well as being turned into a deadbeat dad. Luke somehow became a psychopath, ready to murder his nephew in his sleep. Only Leia became a superhero,, able to survive (and fly) in deep space, yet unable to do ANYTHING ELSE with the force. This entire 'movie' was a crock of $#!* and an insult to the fans, which we now know was Johnson's intention. Sad.

I've got to be honest. When I saw this movie, I disliked it. The more I thought about it, I started to hate it. I thought a lot of choices and moments in the movie were handled poorly and the movie had no emotional weight to it at all. But after seeing this review, I really think I need to give it a second chance. You brought up some really interesting things in the review that make me want to see the movie again with fresh eyes, an outside perspective and some insight. I hope that I'll like it more on a second viewing. Thank you so much, Double Toasted crew for smacking some reality into this foolish young dumb-ass here. :)

4/10 .... and I'm being kind :-( Fan moments with no real plot, strung together by... nothing but Force ;-) And Episode 9 is being co-written by Chris Terrio :'( And people say the _sequels_ killed saga. *NO CLASSIC WIPES BETWEEN SCENES!? WTF!?* (I didn't see any at least)

You ARE being kind. The entire Disney trilogy is bull$#!*.

Them telling us Finn and Rose suck is very disappointing because they are like a quarter of the movie..

NB: Cory spoke true: “Desert island” means “deserted island”, and does not necessitate its being a desert.

I didn't rush out to see this..I was so disappointed with Force Awakens that I assumed this would be just incrementallly better.. Rogue One was sooooo much better!!! Real consequences (well, they all died) and a tight plot

For me it was better than sex. The plot twist just added something new to the Star Wars Cinematic Universe. I felt we saw so many different things container this movie compared to some of the others. While that casino was a little weak I felt everything else more than made up for it. That plot twist at the very end, holy shit.

Merry Christmas!saw the movie today with my sister and her bfworth the wait, suffers from a lot of pacing issues and doesn't answer every question but expands the mythos in interesting wayssome of the best acting from Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher

Rey isn't a Mary Sue? 😂 Did I hear that right? Did you guys even watch EP VII? She knew how to do everything.

See I felt the movie was very slow I hate Force Awakens but at least it felt like an adventure now the only part that felt that way was the Casino part so was it stupid and unnecessary for us to watch sure but it at least gave me a mini adventure because the rest of the movie is just the rebels stalling the first order then luke stalling the first order

Per my vow to never pay to watch another Star Wars film ever again after nearly walking out on The Force Awakens due to just how terrible it was, through means which I shall not discuss, I was able to watch the new Star Wars: The Last Jedi film over the weekend. Suffice it to say, it wasn’t good. But in the spirit of giving things a second chance, I recently re-watched it. Not only is it still not a good film, but I noticed even more plot holes and it seems to have doubled down on everything that made The Force Awakens so horrible. Without going into spoilers, I’ll just say that nothing is of any consequence in The Last Jedi. Characters do things that are so uncharacteristic for them. The slapstick comedy and constant attempts at humorous one-liners were annoying. Tonally, it’s all over the damn place. The acting is only ever serviceable (although, Mark Hamill, Andy Serkis and Adam Driver do what they can). The inconsistency in what a Force user can/can’t do or what supposed masters of the Force can/can’t sense is glaring. In TLJ, the Force is used as a deus ex machina a number of times. Many of the new characters introduced in The Force Awakens are throwaway and we learn nothing of their backstories. The main plot exists for utterly no logical reason making subplot #1 void of any purpose (seriously, it literally had NO effect on anything). Speaking of pointless subplots, subplot #2 for Rey to train in the ways of the Force is again rendered unnecessary due to her Force powers and Lightsaber skills already being pretty much fully formed. As with TFA, in TLJ there’s not a single moment where the tension is earned or the stakes feel real. I’m left incredulous witnessing reviewers praise these new Star Wars films which have the sort of flaws that they would utterly eviscerate any other movie for having. But Star Wars and the blind loyalty it commands knows no bound

So peoples biggest complaints with the Force Awakens was that it was too much like ep 4 and played it safe. People's biggest complaints with this movie is that it didn't feel enough like star wars and took too many risks. I don't think Disney can win.
@JM-gs5oc7 жыл бұрын
There's a middle-ground that Disney can achieve to make a great star wars movie, but it's not going to be with this trilogy. It Feels like the company still finding their feet in how to handle star wars
