I don't think it was completely satire, I think his point was not to blindly take an internet critics opinions as though they're the words of some kind of cinema god. It's easier then ever now for anybody to get some level of attention and regard as a "critic" so long as they're quick enough to review the latest movies and say the right things to avoid offending the general masses while making themselves sound like they know what they're talking about. I can see his point in that, it seems more and more people today are thinking that these internet reviewers, who probably have never made an actual movie in their life (or, at most, a handful of short films), know more about making movies then actual, accomplished, actor's, directors, and writers. He's not saying that you can't decided whether somethings good or not, but don't think something's bad just because some guy on the internet said so.

Noticed very soon he didn't actually mention aspects from the film, just statements that could be applied so it led me to think he didn't see it, and would point it out. However, I didn't expect the massive shade-smooth like Sade-cut to fade he threw towards KZbin movie essay channels ran by people without film making experience.
@fortris
@fortris 7 жыл бұрын
But isn't he essentially doing the same thing? He's criticizing something that he has no personal experience in and dismissing it outright. I'm by NO MEANS defending random "film analysis" channels on youtube but this comes off hypocritical. Either he HAS done videos like this, has experience, and therefore can critique and analyze them, or he HASN'T and by his own logic cannot? Either way he isn't following his own advice. I can't even tell if the video is serious or a joke, like the end joke about Jesus Christina Aguilera is obvious but honestly I could see people being this upset over how many people make random film analysis videos on youtube. I get the end point about creating rather than picking apart other people's work, but not everyone is creative? I think it's weird to just shit on people who give their thoughts on movies on a platform where people make assloads of money dressing up as Spiderman and Elsa farting on each other. For real, maybe I just don't "get it". But everyone in the comments is doing the same shit he made fun of, agreeing with the uploader to feel smart. (And please for the love of GOD don't pretend like I'm being contrarian to feel smarter, I'm legitimately confused about all of this)

+Fortris From what I understand, Soulbrotha has experience with directing in some way. He uploads cool skits and has experience working with actors, he's already more qualified than your average YMS or IHE. I wouldn't call the video a joke. He's roping in the audience for these video essays only to drop truth bombs and get them to see "analysis" in a different light. I think this is an important message to get out there. Creative people are wasting their time watching and/or creating analysis videos when they could strive for much better. They are committing themselves to a "genre" that is derivative and relies on other people's work. Non creative people can use analysis as a platform to tear other's work apart, free of the consequences real artists have to deal with. Your cynical review of a bad but harmless indie movie could kill the passion the director or anybody else had making it. Losers will cry about fair use and how no one can accept their criticism, but they've never been in the same position as a first time filmmaker, or a competent actor in a bad movie. No one is going to analyze your dumb KZbin review. They don't have a reputation or a budget on the line. All these jokers need to worry about is if their Patreon has reached it's funding goal. Your average angryboy film reviewer is not pleasant about what they think either. They can call it satire or whatever the fuck they want, but at the end of the day these videos tend to be mean spirited and just shallow. They rely on these bad movies to further their "careers" but are merciless about whatever trivial flaws it has. The overabundance of this stuff has cheapened media. I bet you there are people that don't watch movies anymore and just watch reviews. GOTTA WATCH THAT EMOJI MOVIE REVIEW fifth time today

Hot takes like this remind me that youve pretty much figured out how this youtube shit works, yet still you opt to make actually unique vids when you could probably build a sizeable fanbase and earn some serious ad revenue by exploiting the system like those cinema sins guys. Its one of the reasons I respect you as a creator, because you care more about the quality of your content than you do about how many of the mindless masses see it.

"In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little, yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face, is that in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so."

Well, if you were so easily discouraged from making a movie review because of one video critical of the format than it would have probably been a waste of everybody's time anyway. I watched this video, I've taken heed of what it has to say but it hasn't deterred me from wanting to make video essays because I know how to make them differently and better from the rest. You will have no future if you resign yourself to being an easily influenced lemming who drops his ambitions when somebody tells him "don't".

Remember that time ANYONE, especially a multi-Billion dollar studio was even a little bit emburdened by web review shows analysis shows? I don’t either. Yes i’m sour and bitter and whiny at his tone, but it’s the old “just make art, comment on it is always detrimental”, as if critique or art can be objectively good or objectively bad or people who like art media want to make it- if you don’t care, don’t talk. Letting people like things includes letting people make things that cause no harm intrinsically.

No I am quite sure that he's bashing critics because according to him if you're not a creative then you have no merit, and that creators always trump critics because reasons. Scroll down the comment section to see what he has to say about RLM to truly crystalize this guy's opinion. He genuinely believes that online video essays have no merit because some people aren't good critics. Awful reasoning.
@FulgoreSama
@FulgoreSama 6 жыл бұрын
I'm late af to this, but I feel the last statement there is skewed. I think he believes CURRENT online video essays have no merit because some people aren't good critics rather than just online video essays in general. Hell; he made interesting points, using his delivery and phrasing to emphasize the emotional impact these observed problems hold in relation to his views on the subject matter. Sometimes you have to emote in order to show your point properly and not everything can be displayed in a neutral friendly or overtly positive-slime covered way to do that, even if you hold the possibility of being objectively wrong for your goals. Whether people like to admit it or not; we love having our opinions validated whether they're logical, researched out, emotionally skewed or just flat out conjecture straight out of your ass. We hate being told we're wrong in our choices or in general, while we love being told we're right and being given positive reinforcement to our choices like sponges. The lesson is in learning how to be humble and also allowing oneself or others to be wrong in order to learn past as well as beyond the means of before. I read through some comments and their putting their full responses on the segments talking about "get a microphone, talk really fucking close to it" and related shit because he's harshly criticizing what people like. 1. Abusing Proximity Effect for Vocal Focus for Retention (Check) 2. Over-Producing a take in order to emulate a "professional" performance or conduct despite it being a (IMO WARNING) bastardized form when you pay attention to the connecting nuances (like those opinions he's shooting that fire and venom over in the video essay critics) Those two points alongside the simple opinion I shot out on positive and negative response towards what we like, feel and share is pretty much the entire thing for those who care this much; for those who care more though: SBN3 in my opinion made a huge mistake of mixing these three things; Facetious Humor, Aggressively Toned deadpan criticism towards things he views to have issues with and at the same time tries to offer suggestion that people should invest more attention towards factors that in his perspective matter more. People love to skim context and think they know it all right away (I mean shit, I've probably got some shit crossed or misconstrued, but I'm at least gonna try). Soulbrothanumbah3; I love your content and I can enjoy the words between the lines you're putting out man, helped my ass out a lot learning a fair bit on a multitude of topics and I'll enjoy your content as long I can since it can give me a chuckle or smile.

You have a truly hilarious delivery and a lot of good points, but I feel a lot of this rage comes across as just bitter. Believe me, I know there’s a lot of people out there talking about art without the slightest idea how much work goes into it, but a video like this were you toss the lot under the bus is a real slap in the face to anyone who, like me, considers video-essays to be a form of art unto themselves, with a definite hierarchy of good and bad. I love your work man, but this felt a bit too dismissive for my tastes.

Jehuty: depends entirely on what you want to do with your life and what an audience wants to see. It’s rewarding if that’s what you want to do, it’s experience if that’s what you intend to keep doing. All of this comes down to a matter of perspective. If a video essay about your film gets more attention than the film itself, maybe it’s time to start analyzing what the film team could be doing wrong instead of getting bitter and blaming the audience.

Critics hate this video because it isn’t meant for them. As much it insults them it was just a device to get us the fuck creating (I’m sorry did you also take Jesus Christ Christina Aguilera seriously too?) Some people can’t live with the idea their opinions don’t fucking matter. Artists get used to that real fast.

Video was too bitter for my taste. Not all of these video essays are made just to reaffirm fanboy's opinions. Sometimes you get some dope videos about some obscure show or movie, that really just highlights the shit it did right. If the essay is made well, it really gives you an appreciation for the whole medium.

i saw swviii for €6 yesterday at 11am. thought it would be a neat distraction for having to work retail christmas hours for the next two weeks. half way through the film i had one of those moments where you just become aware of the audience. it was just a bunch of dudes about twice my age (maybe with a friend) and about two families. made me realize i had just signed some miserable contract believing that escapism is the equivalent of freedom. even skipped on KFC afterwards out of disgust.

"Stop following nobodies, *pay* to watch these other nobodies instead". Do you think them being in a movie or singing a song makes them good or even worth following or listening to? Gal Gadot is in several movies and yet she has yet to act a decent scene in her whole life. I'll take listening to Plinkett shitting on PT than anything ever made by Disney concerning SW.
