+1 for the Ender Saga (and Shadow Saga). I can also recommend pretty much anything by Stanislaw Lem (they showed some of his books but never mentioned him). I don't think Solaris is his best work, though - it is only the most well known because of the two movies. If you're looking for something to get started on him, I'd pick up "The Star Diaries", "Fables for Robots" or "The Cyberiad" if you like lighthearted short stories, pretty much any of the novels (like "Eden" or "Fiasco") for more classic SciFi, "Memoirs Found in a Bathtub" for Kafkaesque dystopia and "Golem XIV" for deep philosophy. (he also has some short stories that are mostly making fun of mismanagement in the Soviet Union, like "Invasion from Aldebaran" and "The Usefulness of the Dragon")
